While all the news is that Newcastle are busy trying to bring Darren Bent to Newcastle this week from Aston Villa, we would be too surprised if Newcastle are also working on a transfer of a player that’s currently not on the radar screen.
Rafik Djebbour – 29 year-old Algerian International striker
And there is news in The Sun today that Newcastle are interested in Olympiakos striker Rafik Djebbour, who is the same age as Bent at 29, and has 30 caps for Algeria.
The Algerian striker, 29, is said to be worth around £2.25M and the striker last season scored 22 goals in 35 games, and he was the top goalscorer in the Greek Super League with 20 goals in 24 appearances.
Rafik could be a cheaper alternative to Darren Bent, if Newcastle cannot get that £6M fee down for the Aston Villa striker, but he doesn’t have the Premier League experience of Darren Bent.
Rafik was born in Grenoble, France, and he was signed to Auxerre’s Youth Academy at the age of 15 in 1998, but he left France for Belgium in 2004, and has since played for a number of Greek clubs.
They include Ethnikos Asteras, Atromitos, Panionios, AEK Athens and Olympiacos, and he has 30 caps for Algeria with 5 goals since making his International debut back in 2005.
And since joining Ethnikos Asteras in Greece in 2005, the 6’1″ striker has scored 111 goals in 229 appearances for Greek clubs, so he has been a prolific goalscorer over the last eight seasons in Greece.
