Newcastle Reported Interested In Algerian International Stiker

8:20 am, Wednesday, July 17th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 28 Comments

While all the news is that Newcastle are busy trying to bring Darren Bent to Newcastle this week from Aston Villa, we would be too surprised if Newcastle are also working on a transfer of a player that’s currently not on the radar screen.

Algeria's Djebbour fights for the ball with Zambia's Mbola during their World Cup 2010 qualifying soccer match in Blida

Rafik Djebbour – 29 year-old Algerian International striker

And there is news in The Sun today that Newcastle are interested in Olympiakos striker Rafik Djebbour, who is the same age as Bent at 29, and has 30 caps for Algeria.

The Algerian striker, 29, is said to be worth around £2.25M and the striker last season scored 22 goals in  35 games, and he was the top goalscorer in the Greek Super League with 20 goals in 24 appearances.

Rafik could be a cheaper alternative to Darren Bent, if Newcastle cannot get that £6M fee down for the Aston Villa striker, but he doesn’t have the Premier League experience of Darren Bent.

Rafik was born in Grenoble, France, and he was signed to Auxerre’s Youth Academy at the age of 15 in 1998, but he left France for Belgium in 2004, and has since played for a number of Greek clubs.

They include Ethnikos Asteras, Atromitos, Panionios, AEK Athens and Olympiacos, and he has 30 caps for Algeria with 5 goals since making his International debut back in 2005.

And since joining Ethnikos Asteras in Greece in 2005, the 6’1″ striker has  scored 111 goals in 229 appearances for Greek clubs, so he has been a prolific goalscorer over the last eight seasons in Greece.

    50,000 + fans plus TV money …

Get some money spent on quality players that we can get excited about … Bent … wtf … couldn’t get in a Villa team nearly relegated and we are buying him because Pardew thinks he’ll be able to get him playing again?

When Pardew is sacked at Christmas we’ll be stuck with the useless Mackem.

Talk about a rock and a hard place, a 29 year old Englishman who has disappointed since leaving Sunderland, and barely got a kick for one of the poorest teams in the league last year, or a 29 yr old Algerian who can score goals in the Greek league, but struggled in Belgium.

If we have to have a 29yo then id actually rather have bent. At least he has prem experience and is English. ( before some tw@ says thats racist, i am merely suggesting we need to boost our home grown ranks). Wow, cant believe i feel i have to qualify some of my comments these days :D

Look at bents goal scoring record n do some research about the clauses in his contract before you randomly spurt things like ‘couldn’t get a game’ or ‘cant score anymore’ I agree he’s hardly a huge signing but he will do a job.

  • 18 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 17, 2013 at 8:52 AM

If we just want English experience we should keep Shola. At least his playing style offers us a different option from a poacher.

Just having to pick who you would prefer out of these two is depressing.

I know this might sound a stupid question but, do you know if any of our scouts has had a look at him over the last 6 months or so ? He could be as fat as pig by now for all i know.Attitude problem also maybe ?

    jeff – no Cisse?>

    Good morning MarKKKaccus,

Keep your outdated views to yourself will ya?

It’s probably extremely naive of me, but I am really hoping that Bent etc are just smokescreens and some actual work is being done to secure the right player(‘s). I suppose if we’re getting in 2 strikers, yeah I know, Bent could be one of them.

  • 22 nut meg // Jul 17, 2013 at 8:55 AM

SORRY it was Bent i was talking about.

  • 23 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 17, 2013 at 8:56 AM

I’ve looked at his record. Even when he played the season before last is record is poor. Holt scored more that year, Lambert did better this year (then Bent’s season of playing). Just because he used to score goals doesn’t mean he still can.

More then anything though, his attitude stinks, and has done at every club he has been at pretty much. Part of his biggest issue at Villa was that he spat his dummy out about Benteke and stopped putting any real effort in when he wasn’t first choice.

  • 24 Markaccus // Jul 17, 2013 at 8:57 AM

I cant help being racist…. all these strikers look the same to me!

I know it is depressing but i am just offering a sort of devils advocate opinion…..theres a thought, how much would satan cost as our striker?! :D

  • 25 lesh // Jul 17, 2013 at 8:57 AM

Good morning all and aren’t we being a wee bit harsh on Signor Kineari?

Lilongwe, Bambams, Ibiza, your impatience is most unsage-like and you surely understand that Guisseppi’s had much to do since he joined us.

The middle-east is in turmoil, the NHS needs his commitment and now North Korea’s in the spotlight having supposedly been caught with missile parts on one of its ships.

Be fair, in the two days he’s dedicated to Newcastle United, our world-renowned DoF will have…. will have… er….

Now, he’s identified his priorities and found his hip flask, we’ll see some action: ah, find a player to shut the fans up. But Pardew’s off to Portugal for a holiday, he’ll soon put a stop to this swanning about the countryside with the players, so how’s his chance to establish himself in his critics’ eyes. A super-signing’s what’s needed, well an attempt at getting one anyway!

Danny Bent! Bingo! Raffle Jabber! Get them in and Sgr Kinneari’s cracked it.

Time for a well deserved holiday after a rollercoaster of a pre-season? No, a scouting trip to the Seychelles!!

  • 26 nut meg // Jul 17, 2013 at 8:59 AM

I keep on hearing we need 2 strikers but IMHO we desperately need a creative attacking player who can score goals first…..SDJ…..then another striker.

  • 27 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 17, 2013 at 9:01 AM

    Nut meg,
According to lots of reports one of his biggest problems was that his attitude stinks. He has thrown toys out of the pram at most clubs he has been at if he isn’t an automatic choice. Lots of stories came out re him not putting the effort in in training last year once he was dropped, and stories of tardiness and poor attitude were all knocking about.

As for if our scouts have looked at him, I have no idea. We don’t have a huge scouting presence in the UK, most is done by coaching staff and management. I’d imagine if we had been watching him it would have been Carver/Stone/Pardew doing it. Although I don’t think he was heavily involved at development level so not sure where you could see him in a match situation.

  • 28 Ibizatoon // Jul 17, 2013 at 9:02 AM

Lesh…I can honestly see the hold up being down to Kinnear being told not to talk to the press. A bit like a child who cannot concentrate on the last day of school before the holidays, I can see Joe pacing around, unable to complete his work with the anticipation of being able to tell everyone how great he is.

Poor bloke. I say we get off his back and give him an A for effort. Do we really need players? Isn’t being linked with them enough?
