We have had a number of complaints recently about the comments on The Newcastle United Blog, and we’d like to bring you attention to the rules we have in place when you comment on the blog.
My wife Madeline and I in sunny Newcastle a few years ago
Here is what’s already on the blog relating to the comments:
“The purpose of the comments is simply to allow Newcastle supporters around the world to express their views on the news of the day regarding Newcastle United.”
“Please respect the views of others, even when those views are completely opposite to what you think and believe.”
“And please keep the language respectable, as we are proud to have young supporters reading this blog, and finally there’s no place for religion or politics in these discussions.”
I created this blog over six years ago and it was principally for people like myself, who are now away from home base, but we can all follow Newcastle on TV and over the internet, and a blog like this wouldn’t have been possible even a short ten years ago.
Please refrain from comments on religion and politics, and be respectful of other people’s views – be civil to other readers.
The comments have been the biggest problem we’ve had on the blog, but it’s not unique to this blog although we tend to get a lot of comments, and it’s always difficult when people leave comments on the Internet.
We try to monitor bad language and the like, but there’s only so much we can do, and I’ve even been asked to close down the blog because of some of the comments – but I don’t want to do that.
Please be responsible when you leave your comments – and keep them on the news of the day about the great Newcastle United Football Club.
Thanks very much for your help on this – and let’s hope we can make a major comeback next season and shock people big time. 😀
Dr. Ed Harrison.

Love the blog really do always check it first for all NUFC news and have enjoyed being able to discuss/agree/disagree and have general banter with toon fans from all over
But in all fairness you can’t ask people not to talk about religion or politics when most the articles this week have been heavily based around religion racism and politics!!
Post articles such as the cisse/ wonga situation is always going to bring heated debate as sadly is racism
Perhaps the best way to avoid such conflict is to simply reduce the amount of articles on the issue
Anyway mate keep up the good work, and please email a response to that idiot NUFCmad about your “yank plastic geordie” site!!!
Spoof

perhaps you should post more often and other sensible posters should do likewise, we could try and drive those who spoil it out, sending them to Coventry could be enough to get rid of them.

Comment #89Dunno about you lads but this is the only blog I read now? The rest are all filled with hate mongering time wasters articles, sure the mag is okay but the rest is all white noise to me. Ed has provided a place for discussion on the one thing thats close to all our hearts and THAT should be the only thing discussed, sure a peppering of Kets very open sex life is acceptable but racism and creedism(?) Shouldn’t exist anywhere in the world, least of all on a site dedicated to a multicultural and diverse team.
If cancer cant shut this blog down then those narrow minded people haven’t got a hope in hell.
Keep up the good work ed and thanks.

Comment #90Rotonda – Mate, I clearly don’t share the vast majority of your views. However, I would never suggest that your not highly knowledgeable of all things football related. I respect you but not always your opinion.

Comment #91Tads- Vuckic had a good game and linked well with the key players.
He was given a lot of room in a largely uncompetive game. It was good that he looked sharp and got through without a problem. He does look extremely fit and has clearly put in a lot of gym time.
Dummett and Sissoko were outstanding. Sissoko really is a beast of a player and I am looking forward to seeing him marauding through opposition midfields.
Hope your having a good summer.

Comment #92Well said Ed. Great blog. We may have different opinions, but there’s no need for bad language or race, religious, homophobic posts!
We need to police ourselves, and that particularly is aimed at the volume/senior bloggers!
We are all on the same side!

Comment #94Well said Ed, lets keep it civil.
Newtain sums it up well for me.
As I live in Spain, this blog is a lifeline for me. As I am semi-retired, I check your blog around a dozen times a day for news – not for religious or political views but purely for NUFC gossip and NUFC banter. keep up the good work 🙂

Comment #95Really sad it has come to this but inevitable given some of the ridiculous comments of late. I’ve been away for a week and flicked through a couple of articles and saw some idiot advocating violence and talking about knifing Mike Ashley…like I said moronic.

Comment #96Well said Ed. Unfortunately with a great open forum like this you’ll always get the madly demented keyboard warriors, those who insult others’ opinions and the downright nasty.
Then there’s the meek type who accept everything that’s thrown at them without complaint.
Regrettably a lot of this wouldn’t exist if we had an ownership that treated fans with respect, ran the club in a professional, thoughtful way, showed some ambition and actually looked as if the image and standing of the club mattered to them as much as it does to us.
We can only dream of the day that will happen or that some white knight will ride in and rescue us all from this nightmare.
In the meantime Ed, carry on with this fabulous blog. Don’t know what we’d all do without it.

Comment #97Ed just wanted to drop by and thank you for running this blog. Like many others have said, this blog is a big part of my life and gets me through the mornings! I don’t post very often but being from the states this is the best way to keep up with the club. Again I appreciate what you do and keep up the good work!

Comment #99Sorry Ed, I disagree with your patronising tone here. To ask folks to ‘Please refrain from comments on religion and politics’ is an insult to free speech.
To support a club is often a political decision (some would say it then becomes a religion). Politics is part of grown up life, folks have to deal with it, you can’t wish it away. It is how we hummin-beens organise our moral & ethical systems.
The key is not censorship, although I accept being respectful to readers of whatever persuasion, and moderate in the language used is the least we could expect of ourselves. Hatred has no part in the blog, I agree, or anywhere else in life – but passion and conviction do; and on the whole the folks on here of all persuasions are a sensible lot.
There are many posters I vehemently disagree with, but I would 100% defend their right to say what they say. These are often complex issues that cannot be neatly/clinically/conveniently separated from football. Ed, you should know that! This is not a kindergarten.
It’s a good blog only because of the variety of comments and shades of opinion on here. For example Matt@27 states his perspective on this, this is his political/moral standpoint – you cannot and should not prevent this. After all it is this conviction (and passion) that drives your ad revenues, and also drives 50,000 optimistic souls through the turnstiles every other week.
If it’s too hot, Ed, get outa the kitchen. This is life.

I was utterly shocked to see one of my posts deleted, yet xenophobic and ignorant posts left undeleted.
I was arguing in the name of tolerance against some incredibly ignorant posters. It was just utterly bizarre to see my comment deleted given that it was a retort to someone who was obviously devoid of any moral sensibilities.
All I can think is that the irony contained in my post was lost on some people.
To ask people to never comment about religion or politics is to perpetuate the ignorance of certain posters. What is the point in that?
People go on about “the Internet” as if it is something other than a mere means of communication. As if views expressed on here are less valuable than those expressed in “real life”.
I believe the opposite is true. In real life when a little guy disagrees with a big guy he may hide his disagreement if the big guy is an aggressive moron. On the Internet there is no need for the little guy to be scared of anyone.
