French Reports – Liverpool Make Approach For Newcastle Winger

10:14 pm, Friday, July 19th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 94 Comments

The French Daily L’Equipe are reporting that Liverpool have made an official approach to Newcastle United for their 26 year-old French International  winger  Hatem Ben Arfa.

ben arfa hands on hips

Ben Arfa – official approach being made by Liverpool?

And then the report says that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is hoping he can persuade the 13 times capped French International,  with the promise of more starts this season than under Alan Pardew.

Well that’s an odd statement, because last year while Ben Arfa played only 22 times with 4 goals and 3 assists, he missed a lot of games last season only because of his rather severe hamstring injury.

If the Frenchman had been fit then Alan Pardew would have played him a lot more times, because he was first choice when he was fit.

It will be interesting to see if this report has any truth to it, because if there has been an official approach for Ben Arfa, we would expect Newcastle to immediately turn down the bid.

That’s unless it’s around £25M, but the news is that it’s only around £10M.

We’d be surprised, in fact we’d be completely shocked, if Liverpool are willing to pay anywhere near £25M for Ben Arfa.

What do you think?

Yes – let’s not buy anyone and whilst we’re on let’s sell the most talented ‘edge of your seat’ player we have.
It beggars belief yet with this regime I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens.
This club is going nowhere quicker than I thought.

would love to know how the french know about a liverpool – newcastle “transfer” before anyone in england…. really cannot seeing this happening at all, mainly because for the money we will ask, they could get errikson…. i think we are actually going to still have all of our players, including cisse, at the end of the transfer window… ashley simply does not have to sell unless its silly money, simple as….. also think were gonna end up with bent and gomis, and hopefully scott sinclair, i’d be happy with that but would much prefer remy, i think we will push on big time next season, i really do, we where written off before the season started when we finished 5th, our squad is a lot strong than at that time, and stronger than everyone seems to think, plus this season everyone will be looking at us as a potential easy point or 3, last year we where a team to really try and beat…. think we’ll prove a lot of critics wrong. if we got remy, gomis, sinclair and kouyate this window i’d be really chuffed. also big season ahead for vuckic if he stays fit, the lad could be a real top player.

on another note, think maybe mourinho’s comments the other day about being a first team player every game if you want to play in the world cup might have got into any of our players ears? hope so…

  • 22 Jail for Ashley // Jul 19, 2013 at 10:40 PM

And for my tuppencance worth I’d be more than happy if it was 20M, the money was immediately reinvested or Mashley got Pards to say we’re 20M cheaper to buy
    now.

  • 24 Mister Tuff // Jul 19, 2013 at 10:42 PM

Just checked out L’Equipe – they are stating the Benny story is from their sources. Therefore re-cycled rubbish.
What was interesting though was a bit about Gomis. He is not playing in Lyons’ friendly tomorrow as he has been sidelined due to impending departure -they suggest OM.
    (might be us though).

Ik heb besloten om me volledig op Ajax te focussen. Een transfer is niet aan de orde..

De Jong told Ajax.NL, “I have decided to focus completely on Ajax,”

“I have a good feeling about the whole preparation, the group, and the staff, i am talking to myself. I do not see why i should leave”

“I want to send a signal, a transfer is not an issue for me, it does not play. It would be nice if this group stays together. I yesterday told the coach they can count on me.”

  • 34 banjax // Jul 19, 2013 at 10:50 PM

A Liverpool with £40 to £50m in their pocket from the Suarez sale just might see a £25M bid for BA. Saying that Liverpool are up to their necks in debt, the latest figure mooted being £180m – ouch that payback must be a bitch. For all our moans at least the Toon is back to solvency with a few quid in the bank. Sad to say Liverpool aren’t the force they used to be and their debts are catching up to them and at some stage they will have to pay that money back with interest and with no Suarez and an ageing Titan in the form of Gerard with his best years behind him, Liverpool supporters have less and less to shout about. Still if the scousers want to stump up £25mil for BA then go for it – there are some good replacements about for that kind of money.

    gorganzola

also the gomis comment isnt aimed directly at you mate, i may not comment much but read thee blog daily and see constant slating of him, his record isnt the best but its definately not the worst, he’s no shola ameobi….. he’s a oppurtunist finisher and he has a decent bit of skill, good movement, probably lacking a bit of pace now but hes powerful and good with both feet. and they want rid of him because hes about to go into his final year, not because he is a bad player

  • 37 Blofal // Jul 19, 2013 at 10:52 PM

Lets sell Cabaye and Ben Arfa for over 50 million and bring in Shaquiri and Reus!!

    Brendan Rodgers:

“There has been lots of players linked but the fact is we really only had one (top target) and unfortunately we didn’t get the chance to speak to that player before he moved from Shakhtar.

“We had spoken to Shakhtar, we had got permission to speak to him but unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to sit down in front of him. It was already in place with Dortmund so that was disappointing.

“I always feel that if I can get in front of the player, I can sell the club and what our project is here.

stan anderson – would we miss him ? of course not. he dosnt score many goals last year due to injury . however every one he scored was goal of the season candidate , the best player we have had when it comes to opening the defence up since the great peter beardsley , can turn a player in the middle of the park. and ease past defenders as if they wernt there , has defenders twisted inside out trying to mark him , all this having come back from injury ! would we miss him ? your on a different planet mate hahaha

I wonder if JFK is basically just incapable of getting the job done. He was initially full of bravado, which in some respects is admirable, but almost certainly the boardroom is not the place anymore that it was in his day, nor in reality his capacity what it once was, it would seem.

His silence and our seeming lack of transfer activity certainly seems very odd, or is it exactly as it should be prior to deals being done?

  • 63 Ben3arfa // Jul 19, 2013 at 11:33 PM

Fee agreed for Gomis, apparently only £4M ??

We’ve been given permission to speak to him

  • 64 Tommyy // Jul 19, 2013 at 11:34 PM

If Ben Arfa can come through an effective pre – season fit and motivated, then he will be a force. The chances of that are slim though, you just know something will give. My old man had a French international colleague who allegedly has known him since he was a kid, and that he’s never been able to cope fully with the mental aspect of being a gifted footballer, and that it has prevented him from becoming one of the best. Sad thing is its probably true and may well be linked to reoccurring injuries etc.

If we can Bring in Gomis for 4m that would be shrewd business, he’s a decent player. Ideally we’d also get a bigger name striker alongside like Remy and a winger like Sinclair and I’d be happy with that for this window.
Then we’d just need Pardew to make them tick, which is a whole different story.

  • 68 Sazzer // Jul 19, 2013 at 11:41 PM

  • 76 jimmysmith // Jul 19, 2013 at 11:49 PM

Gomis at 4 mill would seem an excellent and typical Newcastle bit of business, but it would just reinforce what I think we all suspect in that Ashley is ambitious for Newcastle, but only up to a point. Top 8, hope for a cup and the occasional European adventure. He’s not in it for ego or glory at all, which isn’t such a thrilling prospect if you’re a fan who can even remember the tilts we had even not so long ago as under Sir Bobby and further back to Keegan or edge of your seat sides we have long come to see as our own.

  • 77 sweendog // Jul 19, 2013 at 11:49 PM

  • 80 Krul To Be Kind // Jul 19, 2013 at 11:52 PM

If this Gomis news is true, I for one will be ecstatic. I would like Gignac because of the physical presence he brings to a game but Gomis is a better all rounder with more pace… Strong as an ox and knows where the net is!

Those that say they don’t want him to come, I would love to know more, other than ‘he’s an Ameobi upgrade’, I don’t think we have been watching the same fellow. You don’t get in the French national attack if you are an Ameobi upgrade.

Very good player indeed, big, strong, good team ethic, quick and can finish. There aren’t many better proven strikers about that would come to the toon given our standing last year, take the blinkers off!

  • 81 siqkicks // Jul 19, 2013 at 11:54 PM

With man city signing Jovetic, they now have 5 recognized forwards. Aguero, Jovetic, Dzeko ,Negredo and Guidetti. That means guidetti is almost never going to get any games. i think its best time for us to move for him and sinclair. I think if we get both for 11-13 million it’ll be great business for all parties. Get Bent signed up and if cisse leave gomis. Gomis and Guidetti up front. I think gomis and bent would solve our set play issues especially from corners. Thoughts?

  • 82 stuart no9 // Jul 19, 2013 at 11:58 PM

stan — hes hardly been here 2 seasons- should we have got rid of shearer when he ruptured knee ligaments and missed most of the season ? of course not . you cant just sell a player because you ” think ” he might get injured again. give the boy a chance to have a full season playing , and to see what difference he could make to a otherwise poor nufc team . but lets be honest – who could blame him if he wanted out, not me .

  • 83 Krul To Be Kind // Jul 20, 2013 at 12:01 AM

    Siq

Guidetti is a pipe dream, never gonna happen. We will never risk 6-8m on an unproven young ‘un no matter what the pedigree.

He has done it in Holland, but there has to be a reason he hasn’t really been given a chance in EPL or domestic cups. Our best bet is to get a loan with first option to buy if he succeeds. It is a big if mind on the success.

    Just my opinion buddy!

  • 84 stan anderson // Jul 20, 2013 at 12:05 AM

I may be negative, but that is what happens when you get year after year nothingness, watching the team fail to meet your expectations, bad management, injured players etc.I even dare to say the great Peter Beardsley did,nt turn up some games, but when he did it was worth waiting for.Cant say the same about the present squad we have apart from Sissokho on a couple of shows

  • 85 stuart no9 // Jul 20, 2013 at 12:09 AM

tekkers – i hope we get both . cisse just needs to sort hinself out, or the club come to some compromise gomis and cisse would be decent – some how i dont think it will happen cisse has it in his head now to be away .

  • 86 Novocastrian66 // Jul 20, 2013 at 12:13 AM

I would be gutted if Ben Arfa left, I would be inconsolable if he went to Liverpool. I’m sick of Liverpool signing our best players; Kennedy, McDermott, Beardsley, Carroll, Enrique. They may have got stung on Carroll, but over the years they’ve done better out of deals between the two clubs.
I want to see them fail, Inhate them more than Sunderland and nearly as much as Man Utd.

  • 87 Krul To Be Kind // Jul 20, 2013 at 12:13 AM

    Stuart

I agree, both Cisse and Gomis have 2 different skillsets – they bring different options to the table. I like the prospect of them together. For the record too, Gomis won’t spit the dummy out if asked to play wide and has done in the past, a bigger version of Remy if you will and although he isn’t as quick as Remy he is definitely no slouch!

  • 88 siqkicks // Jul 20, 2013 at 12:14 AM

We paid 5 mil for santon. It may be more than what we usually pay for but loan w option to buy sounds good but honestly I rather pay 2 million more than pay for someone like bent whos got about 3-4 years tops at the top level. Guidetti if a success that 2 million extra could be a potential 10 million profit. Whereas bent and gomis value will either stay or go down. Guidetti can score , we don’t know at EPL level but then that’s the risk when aston villa took when they got benteke, Swansea w michu. Kid just needs a chance. Loan w option

  • 89 siqkicks // Jul 20, 2013 at 12:15 AM

    Siq

I would take him in a heartbeat given the hype surrounding him, just can’t see it happening. He’s a player I don’t know much about, sounds more like a versatile forward. If only our regime would take the odd gamble, in PL terms 6-8m isn’t an awful lot and his wages wouldn’t be massive either. I would love if we tried to get him on a similar deal to the one that got HBA on Tyneside!

As for not getting a chance because of the guys in front of him, he still should have been ‘blooded’ at some point with the odd cameo or cup game, after all he is now in his early twenties.

    Stuart

He is custom built for the PL. I’ll put my neck on the line and say poor man’s Drogba!
