Newcastle Arrange Rangers Friendly – Closer To Signing £7M French Striker

Newcastle today arranged a friendly with Glasgow Rangers on Tuesday, 6th August, with a 7.45 pm kcik-off time, and that should fill out our pre-season schedule, and it’s probably been arranged because of Mike Ashley’s almost 10% ownership of the top Glasgow club.

Rangers

Here is now the updated Newcastle schedule for pre-season.

DateOpponentsLocationResult
Tue - 16 July KO 7:00pmMotherwellFir ParkW 4-2
Sat - 20 July KO 6:00pmRio AveEstadio do Rio AveL 3-1
Tue - 23 July KO - 8:00pmPacos de FerreiraEstadio da Capital do MovelD 1-1
Sun - 28 July KO 3:00pmBlackpoolBloomfield RoadW 1-0

Tue - 6 August, 7:45pmRangersIbrox StadiumD 1-1
Sat - 10 August, KO 6:00pmSC BragaSt. James' ParkD 1-1

And it still leaves open a possible game on Saturday 3rd August, and maybe that’s the date we are trying to arrange a friendly game with Lille for, although the Rangers game may have been in place of the possible Lille game.

Newcastle will likely field a strong side against Rangers, and manager McCoist said this on the Rangers web-site:

“We have enjoyed a positive pre-season so far and we are all looking forward to our final warm-up match against Newcastle before the league campaign begins.” “Newcastle have a strong squad, packed with international players and they will provide a great test for our players.”

“I am sure both sets of supporters will be keen to fill Ibrox and take in such a high profile game before the serious league business gets underway.”

And some slightly updated news from last night on the transfer front – Newcastle’s top striker target now seems to be 27 year-old striker Bafetimbi Gomis of Lyon, and it’s over five years ago that Kevin Keegan was interested in signing the striker, who was then at St. Etienne.

And it if reports are to believed we bid £9M for him in March of 2008.

batefembi gomis

Bafetimbi Gomis – top target for Newcastle?

Gomis has just one year left on his five-year contract at Lyon, so it wouldn’t surprise us if the fee Newcastle are trying to agree for the striker is even less than the £7M quoted.

But we need to sign a striker soon, and hopefully over the weekend, and maybe after we’ve hammered Rio Ave 5-0 tomorrow night? 😀

That will help to raise the spirits on Tyneside.

Being used as a buoy in a busy shipping lane is too good for Ashley.

This is about what I read a few months ago too: http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/10187334.THE_INSIDER__Newcastle_could_still_achieve_top_academy_status/

The recent article in the Mag doesn’t say much. It just says that the club hasn’t released the results. They might not have even been informed of the decision yet so why would they release a statement?

Well if the decision was that we were cat two and our appeal was not upheld, then there would be an announcement that we were cat two.

Benteke signed a new contract with Villa. Told you that he’d only move for a CL club. He’s best off sticking with a big club like Villa and playing every week, plenty of time for him to play in the CL if he does well. Bet he’s got more money too!

The very fact we have had to appeal a decision though for me shows he’s not invested properly (again) and tried to get it through with the bare minimum

Interesting to see Benteke sign a new contract, think it’s a smart move for him, it was unlikely that CL clubs were going to pay the 20m+ that was being bandied around after only one season.

On the Academy. If we fail this audit and still only receive Cat 2 status, or if there is a need to appeal and request more time, then the powers that be clearly have eff all ambition, there can be no two ways about it.

No. We appealed last year. Since then, there’s been no evidence that a decision has actually been reached. The article in The Mag doesn’t appear to have any facts in it and is very woolly.

It also states that 20 clubs have cat one now and includes clubs like Boro, Leicester and Reading. Which means that there would be several other PL clubs who aren’t cat one?

We appealed last summer so from what I understand, we had a grace period and were able to act as cat one until the appeal was heard.

You’re right though. If we aimed for cat one and have spend the last year knowing what we need to do to improve, but we fail….then that’s disgraceful.

Jelavic is pants. People constantly slated Cisse last season but lack of service was what really hampered his ability to score.

However, Jelavic was simply poor last season. I honestly would rather Bent.

Complacency seems to be an issue, I read somewhere that our officials were surprised that we didn’t achieve Cat 1 last year and that they thought we needed to do little to achieve it, so perhaps they have done very little and in fact have not done enough. Again.

Aye so like I said the fact he knew we were to be inspected last summer, knew the provisions and has had to appeal the decision says he simply didn’t do enough to ensure the status

I’m sure there are plenty of clubs in the PL without it, but there not in the northeast where you have to absolutely stand out to attract top youngsters

    Pardew:
“There’s no point in saying you’re going to put the toughest pre-season on if it’s resulting in injuries and is counterproductive for the team.

So far we have been fortunate with no injuries and no strains, and yet we’re really cranking up the pressure on the players.

We are doing it with the best knowledge we can, using Faye Downey, who is a Performance Director Consultant. Her overseeing of our work has definitely helped already.”

“Last year with the length of the campaign, the Europa League and everything else, sometimes we were in games where we started to lose our way towards the end of them.

This year we want that to be in reverse – push the team so hard so that in the last 15 minutes we are still right at it and able to give it everything we’ve got.”

Yeah, but only a few clubs got it last summer. I don’t think it was a big deal as long as we had the right to appeal. It was all very new last summer too.

Important thing is to get it right this time. 100%

The whole benefit of Cat 1 is that it does not restrict your ability to recruit youngsters. If you are Cat 2 there is a certain distance from which you can not recruit.

If you’re a PL team in London, these mileage restrictions won’t hamper you that much as there will undoubtedly be more to pick from in a small catchment area.

As tads mentioned, a mileage restriction in the North East, really puts us at a serious disadvantage.

I suppose it is only fair to reserve judgement until we know either way, but I’d be extremely disappointed if we don’t achieve Cat 1.

As for the article in nufc.co.uk, Pardew really is saying all the right things in terms of recognising the importance of fitness, and how our lack of fitness last season really impinged on the quality of football delivered. Still a shame he’s a mediocre manager on the tactical side of things.

I didn’t see it. It looks like it. Pardew still happy with him though:

“The centre-halves is an area I’m particularly happy with. We have four experienced guys and Mapou (Yanga-Mbiwa) in particular has now had six months in England is looking terrific.”
