Newcastle Arrange Rangers Friendly – Closer To Signing £7M French Striker

5:33 pm, Friday, July 19th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 253 Comments

Newcastle today arranged a friendly with Glasgow Rangers on Tuesday, 6th August, with a 7.45 pm kcik-off time, and that should fill out our pre-season schedule, and it’s probably been arranged because of Mike Ashley’s almost 10% ownership of the top Glasgow club.

Here is now the updated Newcastle schedule for pre-season.

Tue - 16 July KO 7:00pmMotherwellFir ParkW 4-2
Sat - 20 July KO 6:00pmRio AveEstadio do Rio AveL 3-1
Tue - 23 July KO - 8:00pmPacos de FerreiraEstadio da Capital do MovelD 1-1
Sun - 28 July KO 3:00pmBlackpoolBloomfield RoadW 1-0
Tue - 30th July KO 7:30pmSt. MirrenLove StreetW 2-0
Tue - 6 August, 7:45pmRangersIbrox StadiumD 1-1
Sat - 10 August, KO 6:00pmSC BragaSt. James' ParkD 1-1

And it still leaves open a possible game on Saturday 3rd August, and maybe that’s the date we are trying to arrange a friendly game with Lille for, although the Rangers game may have been in place of the possible Lille game.

Newcastle will likely field a strong side against Rangers, and manager McCoist said this on the Rangers web-site:

“We have enjoyed a positive pre-season so far and we are all looking forward to our final warm-up match against Newcastle before the league campaign begins.” “Newcastle have a strong squad, packed with international players and they will provide a great test for our players.”

“I am sure both sets of supporters will be keen to fill Ibrox and take in such a high profile game before the serious league business gets underway.”

And some slightly updated news from last night on the transfer front – Newcastle’s top striker target now seems to be 27 year-old striker Bafetimbi Gomis of Lyon, and it’s over five years ago that Kevin Keegan was interested in signing the striker, who was then at St. Etienne.

And it if reports are to believed we bid £9M for him in March of 2008.

batefembi gomis

Bafetimbi Gomis – top target for Newcastle?

Gomis has just one year left on his five-year contract at Lyon, so it wouldn’t surprise us if the fee Newcastle are trying to agree for the striker is even less than the £7M quoted.

But we need to sign a striker soon, and hopefully over the weekend, and maybe after we’ve hammered Rio Ave 5-0 tomorrow night? 😀

That will help to raise the spirits on Tyneside.

Comments welcome.

    Obviously this isn’t gospel like

And this is Eds research on failing cat on

  • 2 Jail for Ashley // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:36 PM

Being used as a buoy in a busy shipping lane is too good for Ashley.

I read on twitter we got granted cat 1 status today? Was that just bs then?

  • 5 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:41 PM

Could well be or maybe after 8 months Ashley has finally sorted it out

  • 6 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:42 PM

This is about what I read a few months ago too:

The recent article in the Mag doesn’t say much. It just says that the club hasn’t released the results. They might not have even been informed of the decision yet so why would they release a statement?

  • 7 Indian Magpie // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:42 PM

    Thats True

Just Hope Tito Gets well Soon

  • 8 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:43 PM

Canny see it taking a month for them to make a decision like

What’s with your post on here and the moderation preview? I didn’t see your post on the previous page.

How about a Short Note/ article for Tito Vilanova

  • 11 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:44 PM

Well if the decision was that we were cat two and our appeal was not upheld, then there would be an announcement that we were cat two.

  • 12 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:45 PM

God knows Ed doesn’t like me posting links from rivals!!!!!

  • 13 viv // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:45 PM

WWYCD, the bookies will not be wrong about Pardew, getting the bullet.

  • 14 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:46 PM

Benteke signed a new contract with Villa. Told you that he’d only move for a CL club. He’s best off sticking with a big club like Villa and playing every week, plenty of time for him to play in the CL if he does well. Bet he’s got more money too!

  • 15 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:47 PM

The very fact we have had to appeal a decision though for me shows he’s not invested properly (again) and tried to get it through with the bare minimum

  • 16 WWYCD // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:47 PM

Dunno mate can’t find the tweet now. See Benteke signs a new contract…will we see Cisse sign a new contract soon? He’s apparently after one

  • 17 WWYCD // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:48 PM

    Well they were last season

  • 18 Sazzer // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:49 PM

Aston #Villa striker Christian Benteke withdraws transfer request and instead extends deal. Clockwatch:

  • 19 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:51 PM

Interesting to see Benteke sign a new contract, think it’s a smart move for him, it was unlikely that CL clubs were going to pay the 20m+ that was being bandied around after only one season.

On the Academy. If we fail this audit and still only receive Cat 2 status, or if there is a need to appeal and request more time, then the powers that be clearly have eff all ambition, there can be no two ways about it.

  • 21 viv // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:52 PM

Was Pardew, odds on for the chop last season?

  • 22 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:52 PM

No. We appealed last year. Since then, there’s been no evidence that a decision has actually been reached. The article in The Mag doesn’t appear to have any facts in it and is very woolly.

It also states that 20 clubs have cat one now and includes clubs like Boro, Leicester and Reading. Which means that there would be several other PL clubs who aren’t cat one?

  • 23 veto // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:52 PM

Cisse out gomis in is terrible terrible business !
i will lose faith if we cannot resolve this situation any better than this .
now the pair of them together and then you are talking !

  • 24 belgrade fan // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:53 PM

Does it mean Villa is no longer after Gomis and its only us now??

  • 25 viv // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:53 PM

Jelavic, is up for grabs, he is a canny player.

  • 26 WWYCD // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:53 PM

Betting stopped on it happening…he’s still here

  • 27 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:54 PM

We appealed last summer so from what I understand, we had a grace period and were able to act as cat one until the appeal was heard.

You’re right though. If we aimed for cat one and have spend the last year knowing what we need to do to improve, but we fail….then that’s disgraceful.

  • 29 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:55 PM

Jelavic is pants. People constantly slated Cisse last season but lack of service was what really hampered his ability to score.

However, Jelavic was simply poor last season. I honestly would rather Bent.

  • 32 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:58 PM

Complacency seems to be an issue, I read somewhere that our officials were surprised that we didn’t achieve Cat 1 last year and that they thought we needed to do little to achieve it, so perhaps they have done very little and in fact have not done enough. Again.

  • 33 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:58 PM

Aye so like I said the fact he knew we were to be inspected last summer, knew the provisions and has had to appeal the decision says he simply didn’t do enough to ensure the status

I’m sure there are plenty of clubs in the PL without it, but there not in the northeast where you have to absolutely stand out to attract top youngsters

  • 34 swemag // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:58 PM

All these articles and rumours because of one entry on Twitter from the Lyon chairman. There really is nothing to write about…dying to see a new signing though.

  • 35 Sazzer // Jul 19, 2013 at 5:59 PM

“There’s no point in saying you’re going to put the toughest pre-season on if it’s resulting in injuries and is counterproductive for the team.

So far we have been fortunate with no injuries and no strains, and yet we’re really cranking up the pressure on the players.

We are doing it with the best knowledge we can, using Faye Downey, who is a Performance Director Consultant. Her overseeing of our work has definitely helped already.”

“Last year with the length of the campaign, the Europa League and everything else, sometimes we were in games where we started to lose our way towards the end of them.

This year we want that to be in reverse – push the team so hard so that in the last 15 minutes we are still right at it and able to give it everything we’ve got.”

  • 36 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:00 PM

No evidence either way yet though mate. To be fair, I’m going to reserve judgement until the decision is announced. They shouldn’t fail though, it can’t be that hard.

  • 37 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:01 PM

Yeah, but only a few clubs got it last summer. I don’t think it was a big deal as long as we had the right to appeal. It was all very new last summer too.

Important thing is to get it right this time. 100%

  • 38 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:01 PM

The whole benefit of Cat 1 is that it does not restrict your ability to recruit youngsters. If you are Cat 2 there is a certain distance from which you can not recruit.

If you’re a PL team in London, these mileage restrictions won’t hamper you that much as there will undoubtedly be more to pick from in a small catchment area.

As tads mentioned, a mileage restriction in the North East, really puts us at a serious disadvantage.

  • 39 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:04 PM

I suppose it is only fair to reserve judgement until we know either way, but I’d be extremely disappointed if we don’t achieve Cat 1.

As for the article in, Pardew really is saying all the right things in terms of recognising the importance of fitness, and how our lack of fitness last season really impinged on the quality of football delivered. Still a shame he’s a mediocre manager on the tactical side of things.

  • 40 Sazzer // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:06 PM

I didn’t see it. It looks like it. Pardew still happy with him though:

“The centre-halves is an area I’m particularly happy with. We have four experienced guys and Mapou (Yanga-Mbiwa) in particular has now had six months in England is looking terrific.”

  • 41 viv // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:07 PM

Jelavic, is a decent player and so is Bent.

  • 42 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:08 PM

I don’t see it, I think he’s a flash in the pan in a team that had confidence. When asked to do it week in week out from the get go, he couldn’t deliver. His stats last season were horrendous.

  • 43 Sazzer // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:09 PM

OFFICIAL: Manchester City confirm the signing of Stevan Joveti?.

  • 44 Jail for Ashley // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:09 PM

We shouldn’t bloody be talking about cats on a Friday in the middle of a transfer window we should be discussing the new players we should have signed in the last three weeks.

  • 45 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:12 PM

I’d be shocked if anyone doesn’t agree that it would be a massive disappointment if we don’t get cat one. We simply can’t afford to fail there when our 2 nearest rivals have already had it granted.

I’m waiting to see what Pardew does tactically this year…maybe if he can keep his key players in better shape then he can play the way he wants to play. He didn’t have much success last year with plan B or C…

Gignac and Gomis stats are no better and they are playing inferior football and their the same age as Jelavic.

  • 49 ToonMauritius // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:17 PM

    Hi Fans
Getting the presentiment that we will sign Gomis shortly & that Cisse will leave by the end of the transfer window & bwe won’t have enough time to find a replacement and you already guess what will be the scenario

  • 50 Dannyo // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:17 PM

Since Benteke has signed on, it’ll be even easier for them to get rid of Bent. Hopefully we’ll punce now.
Gomis has an excellent scoring record in France, a goal every 2.04 game from the start. A steal at £7M imo.

Get them both in and be done with it, if Cisse leaves, we’ll have at least two proven strikers.

  • 51 lukes26 // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:22 PM

so signing Gomis would effectively end any interest in Bent (who I suspect we were never interested in)

He’s not horrible. His hold up play is pretty good. I don’t think it’s as good as AC or Ameobi, but he does much much better than Cisse, to be sure.

I don’t think his goal scoring record of the past two seasons in France will translate to the Premier league.

  • 52 John Tudor // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:23 PM

hope we don’t punce it make a hell of a mess

  • 53 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:24 PM

I agree. We shouldn’t sign Gomis, we shouldn’t sign Gignac and we shouldn’t sign Jelavic.

Just because one poor striker is slightly better than another poor striker, doesn’t mean he would be a good signing.

Unfortunately you’re right. Sad state of affairs but did you expect anything else?

His plan A wasn’t exactly top dollar either was it? I’m expecting no surprises from him next season other than the mediocre dross that was served up to us last season. That way, I won’t be overly upset when we see cr@p football, and I’ll be pleasantly surprised from any glimpses of quality.

    Sorted 😀

  • 57 geordie157 // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:29 PM

    Jelavic = no thanks

Gignac or Gomis, i’d said maybe but only for 5mill. I’ve seen Gignac quoted at 12mill. 12mill would buy us Rhodes

If we signed Remy and Gomis/Gignac/Bent that would be alright.

    Just a Hypothesis

  • 62 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:32 PM

How can he was below par when he only played 16 games in the league, most of which were from the bench?

  • 63 ~Joke-innear~ // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:32 PM

    Gomis and Adam le Fondre.

If we are keeping Cisse and Gomis is coming in to challenge Cisse/Goofy, there is no point going after Bent as he would not get ahead of them in the pecking order, meaning he would be relegated to the bench. He hardly makes an impact comng off the bench, whereas Le Fondre does.

  • 64 lukes26 // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:34 PM

Depends which Bent youre speaking of, Darren Bent of 2008 or Bent of 2013. Darren bent of 2013 is championship level at best

  • 65 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:34 PM

We had this discussion last night, Bent is better than Le Fondre, it’s less of an opinion, more of a factually based statement that is supported by statistics.

  • 66 plana // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:35 PM

Jelavic, would be a better bet than Bent. Villa were in the relagation fight most of last season and Bent could’nt get a game so he must be on the wane.

  • 67 ~Joke-innear~ // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:35 PM

    @Luke, exactly.

2008 Bent was a monster in front of goal, would have been over the moon if we signed him back then.

2013 Bent imho is hardly worth the effort.

  • 68 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:35 PM

I’m not saying Darren Bent is a world beater, but for 5m he’d be a steal. He hasn’t lost his ability, he’s simply fallen out with Lambert, which explains why he hasn’t played.

  • 69 geordie157 // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:36 PM

So Cabaye to PSG for Sakho and Menez plus 10mill. Not too much to ask for is it. As much as I like Cabaye 20mill plus would be too good to turn down.

Or straight swap Cabaye for Sakho, Menez and Gameiro

  • 73 Jonny // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:38 PM

Gomis is a 12 goal a season man in the French league so probably a 7-8 goal a season man in the PL?

  • 74 viv // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:38 PM

Well said Plana old son using some lateral thinking.

  • 75 ~Joke-innear~ // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:39 PM

Ruddy, Im not telling you to stop fooling yourself with these delusions… I am entirely fine with you thinking that Bent is worth buying. Everyone has their opinion.

Like I said yesterday, I don’t take into consideration what a player has accomplished in the past. The past is the past. I only consider whats happened recently

And last season alone, Le Fondre was the better player.

Falling out with the manager? That just tells me that he is going to be trouble.

Only 16 games, most off the bench? That just tells me he wasn’t good enough to make it into the Villa squad.

  • 76 Sazzer // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:39 PM

  • 77 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:40 PM

Lateral thinking?! There’s nothing lateral about that! It’s putting 2+2 and coming up with 5.

Lambert and Bent fell out last season. Which is why he hardly played. What is so difficult to comprehend about that!?!

  • 78 Sazzer // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:41 PM

    Messi to Newcastle =)

  • 79 geordie157 // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:41 PM

Ruddy, I was joking! But if his destination is PSG, then we’d be mad not to try to at least get Menez if possible.

I agree with you on Bent, proven prem goalscorer, 5-6mill, get him signed!

  • 80 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:42 PM

Of course, because the manager couldn’t be the instigator of a falling out. Le Fondre made nearly all his apps from the bench, does that suggest he was not good enough for the Reading squad? Conveniently no, because it suits your argument.

He scored more goals last season than Bent, granted, but he also scored more PL goals than Cisse. Is he a better striker than Cisse?

  • 81 plana // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:42 PM

Le Fondre was a better striker than Cisse last year, in every aspects of their games.

    Cisse was horrible.

Gave the ball away, offside, didnt score even though he was the lone striker in most games.

Cisse has more abilities though..I just dont know what happened to them last year

  • 96 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:50 PM

What? Le Fondre may have scored more goals but in absolutely no way is he a better striker than Cisse.

Le Fondre hit a lucky patch in the season and everything he seemed to touch went in, Cisse on the other hand had a poor season by his standards, the service provided was dreadful and he was playing lone striker, despite the fact he cannot hold up the ball, which is not his game.

Cisse is a vastly better striker than Le Fondre.

  • 97 viv // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:50 PM

Oh get over it teacher, its a bloody football blog not a MENSA IQ test

  • 98 supershola // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:51 PM

As Ashley bought 3 players forward for this summer in January he’ll not be planning many more (no ambition at all) I’m guessing a striker is all Ashley wants now, no more unless someone gets sold.

I can’t imagine Liverpool will cough up more than £15 million for Ben Arfa so he’ll still be here.
The only one’s I think we could potentially sell is Cabaye and Cisse.

Cisse is obviously engineering a move. There’s no way he can have no issue playing in the ‘Barclays’ premier league and wearing ‘Virgin Money’ on his top but does have an issue with another company charging interest.

For all those thinking we should give in and let him wear a top without it is daft. What happens if the other 6 Muslims on the team then refuse as well.

And everyone’s talking about Ashley sorting the finance out in the club. Fair enough to a point but not investing last summer nearly cost us a place in the league and does he learn his lesson? No…

We don’t need a complete overhaul of the squad like the scum but we do need a good 3 players to improve the squad. I can’t believe some fans are happy for us to spend no money, stay towards the bottom/mid table but the books are looking good.

    It’s not good enough !

  • 102 Uncertain Toon // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:53 PM

From what i’ve seen of Gomis last season i think he could be a decent acquisition, certainly a step up from Gignac. He’s strong, quick and can hold the ball up well.
He can score all types of goals, be it headers, tap ins, shots from outside and likes to run directly at defenders. He is a different player to cisse in most aspects and i could see them working together up top. He has a decent assist record and could certainly bring Cisse in to the game.
A 4312 formation with De Jong the link up man.

    De Jong

Sissoko would cover for Debs when he bombs on, but i think we would go to a 3 at back when Santon attacks cos we’ve seen Benny’s defending!
Any good or am I talking utter pish?

  • 104 ~Joke-innear~ // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:53 PM

Did I not mention yesterday that I want le fondre as an impact player from the bench as I see neither him nor Bent taking the 1st or 2nd choice spot.

Bent is not an impact player and will hardly inspire the team by coming off the bench, to put it another way.. he is a slightly more prolific Ameobi.

Le fondre scored those goals in a team that was working, Newcastle were not… hardly Cisse’s fault if the team can’t get the ball to him… or if Ba was being a selfish little child and throwing his toy out the pram if he didn’t get his way. How many goals did Cisse score that were ruled out despite being legitimate? Add that to the tally and he would outscored le Fondre.

  • 105 Cpt. Dreamboat // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:54 PM

Time to swoop in for guidetti I hope? Aguero,Dzeko,Negredo,Jovetic. Surely thats too far down the pecking order for his liking. haha doesnt bode well for our first game either, our defence against that strikeforce. no way

  • 106 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:55 PM

I agree, it’s frustrating to be able to pin point where the weaknesses are in the squad, yet have an owner be so flippant with regards correcting them.

We know the excuses that are going to be rolled out when the window shuts and we’ve not made the requisite signings, but there is little we can do to avoid the inevitable failure to invest.

It all points to yet another disappointing season doesn’t it?

  • 107 viv // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:57 PM

  • 108 supershola // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:57 PM

    Uncertain Toon

Would be a nice thought but I really can’t see us buying De Jong. I think Pardew see’s sissoko as the no 10 this season so def don’t think he’ll be looking to buy another to fill in that position.

Especially how we can’t even seem to get a striker tied up !

  • 109 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 19, 2013 at 6:57 PM

I agree with you, Cisse is a vastly better player than Le Fondre, and was unlucky with his goals tally.

If we signed Bent for 5m and he agreed to be an impact player then why not have him as an option off the bench? Perhaps he would surprise a lot of people, defences wouldn’t want to see him coming at them in the last 15/20 mins of a match.

It’s just my opinion, but for 5m he would be a snip.

  • 110 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 19, 2013 at 7:00 PM

The grown ups have moved on from your petty dispute. I am not beaten, how can someone be beaten in an exchange of opinions? Defies the very definition of “opinion”

  • 113 supershola // Jul 19, 2013 at 7:01 PM

    Too right Ruddy.

Can imagine the excuse now, I really can see Cabaye or Cisse leaving in the last few days of the window and the whole Andy Carrol excuse’s will come out again and we won’t have time for a replacement.

Why we didn’t have a striker lined up and in the club in June ready for July 1st amazes me.

Look at Norwich getting van wolfswinkel in early ready to kick on at the start of pre-season. That’s the way to get the best out of the players ready for the season as well as showing the rest of the team we have ambition.

The other excuse is obviously the fact we bought 5 players in January

  • 115 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 19, 2013 at 7:02 PM

    Cheers John.

I don’t particularly think Bent is a “spent” player. The guy is only 29 years of age, and while he had a sluggish season at best for Villa last season, I think there are mitigating circumstances.

His record speaks for itself, and while I would rather we spend the money on a young 21 year old striker from the continent, I am trying to merely reason why Bent wouldn’t be a disastrous signing, and would certainly be a better signing than Le Fondre.

  • 116 Uncertain Toon // Jul 19, 2013 at 7:02 PM

And your opinions about incoming players are just that, opinions. However, I won’t be so insulting to claim your opinions amount to nothing.

I suppose we must steel ourselves for inevitable disappointment, and ready ourselves for a bland season at best, and a rocky season at worst. With Pardew in charge of tactics, Kinnear in charge of recruitment and Ashley the rotund ringleader, we have a toxic concoction.

I’d take Bent mate as they don’t forget where the onion bag is, if the chances are created for him he’ll score goals.
If it was a forward 2 of Gomis and Cisse for example it would be up to Bent to usurp either one.
I question his hunger though mate, if he really wanted to play last season he would have gone grovelling to Lambert. Could Pardew get the best out of him? I wonder.
SBR or Keagan could get him going, I’m just not sure Pardew can install that sort of confidence in a player. Having said that you would think the chance of going to the world cup would be motivation enough and we could really benefit from having him here. I think the world cup looming is going to have a big impact on how they perform/hunger and effort they put in this season mate.
So yeah, get Bent in for no more than 5 million squids.

But come end of the season, Bent will be 30 and that much harder to sell, whereas Le Fondre will be 27 and there is more hope of selling him if he flops.

Most players generally tend to peak between 25-30, Bent certainly did back at Sunderland. I’m more willing to gamble on Le fondre then to gamble on Bent.

If we could get him for 5m or less, it would be a bargain, any more I would walk away.

We don’t know the ins and outs of what caused the fall out between player and manager last season so perhaps there was too much water under the bridge to reconcile? Who knows?

The one area that players seem to be in agreement with regards Pardew’s success is his man management, so perhaps he could manage Bent. Again, who knows?

5m is a drop in the ocean when it comes to a club like Newcastle. If we gave him a 3 year deal and he didn’t cut the mustard, it’s not exactly breaking the bank. We’ve had the likes of Shola for 13 years, and Nile Ranger for too long to complain about the likes of Bent.

Le Fondre has hit his best as far as I am concerned, he isn’t PL quality in my opinion.

The club that signs BENT will see the best of him because he is desperate to get in the England squad for the World Cup at the end of the season. He wants to be playing and banging the goals in.

Bent for £5 million or less is an excellent deal and 100% agree with Pardew (first time ever) that bringing Bent to the club would be a terrific addition.

We hold all the cards on the deal because he wants to come here, so Ashley will use that to get him as cheap as possibly. That’s the only reason the deal is taking so long.

  • 180 Mister Tuff // Jul 19, 2013 at 8:41 PM

the ouija board -confirmed by the tea leaves report the following results.
Remy -will not be signed – SCRUBS was spelled out -which must be Wormwood Scrubs jail.
Bent – there is an interest but we want him cheap, really cheap -the ouija board kept spelling out SD, SD -which I presume is a synonym for cheap.

As for myself we need two attacking midfielders/forwards who are strong enough to burst through defences, somebody to play on the wing (and who can cross) and a commanding CB (I note Percy is now saying he thinks the back four are ok ). The back four are clearly NOT good enough.
I would get Bent if he was cheap and only if other strikers were bought.
I still think we may get a big name player.

  • 183 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 19, 2013 at 8:46 PM

Well my ideal acquisition in terms of strikers would have been PEA as first shout, as I think he is an absolute star, but given that Dortmund offer him a (slightly) higher standard of football, it was never going to be likely.

I’ve liked the look of Gameiro since we were linked with him when he was at Lorient and I was annoyed that we couldn’t get him snapped up.

Abel Hernandez doesn’t have a fantastic goal scoring record but I think his pace and channel play would open so much space up for Cisse, he’d be like how Bellamy was for Shearer back in the day.

If I was being very ambitious, I would love to see the club go for someone like Lukaku as I think he is the epitome of a perfect striker at such a young age, speed, strength, hold up play, striking ability. The kid has it all and will be the next Drogba.

But we’re never going in for someone like him, so Gameiro and Hernandez would be my two shouts, but I still like Bent for 5m haha

  • 190 luke.r // Jul 19, 2013 at 8:55 PM

yeah definatly forget about remy sooo risky!

ive never seen gameiro or heard of Hernandez but i would have thought theyd be better then gomis and gignac lol.

all ive been thinking is get a fast striker to play on the wing but if we got bent and a better and younger striker like cisse, then we could just go for someone like sinclaire whod challenge goofy and i wreck we could get goals like that. really we just need cisse to get some good service and he should bang them in again. heres hoping anyway!

People go on about how good Pardew is as a man manager, but it’s blatantly obvious it’s all about him and self preservation. As we see on a weekly basis he continually pretends to be something he is not. I don’t think he cares about anyone but himself as he knows he’s in the biggest job he will ever have.
He gobbed off about Mashley and other things at end of season and in comes JFK and Pardew is put back in his box. Can’t see us ever having a top manager under Mashley cos he just couldn’t control them. Hope i’m wrong John and when Pardew gets the push we get a proper forward thinking modern manager in. How did I suddenly start Pardew bashing? You dangled the carrot!!

I don’t know how he manages to stay around at clubs for the length of time he does. There must not be a clause in that 8 yr contract.

  • 196 Jail for Ashley // Jul 19, 2013 at 9:07 PM

There is a lot of us thi king Mashley is clueless when it comes to running a football club when in fact considering we’ve only been relegated once we’re so far a huge success to him, if it’s true that SD has increased in value 40% since he’s been here to gamble with our survival only adding 40M to our debt if it fails while spending next to nothing has to be a huge success to this cold heartless greedy Tory bstard.

  • 197 Sazzer // Jul 19, 2013 at 9:07 PM

Lavezzi, Pastore, Lucas, Cavani, Ibrahimovic, unless Blanc rates him more than Ancelotti he’s most likely not going to be starting player.

Also remember Menez are close with Arfa (hence the PSG links)

And Blanc had argument Arfa during Euros. If remember correctly even Menez did something. I think he even got banned but not sure if that was because he argued with Blanc.

So if we put in a bid I think they will consider selling and I think we could win that race.

  • 198 DevonToon // Jul 19, 2013 at 9:07 PM

I nominated A Hernandez as one of my “if it was my choice” strikers along with A Lacazette. Palermo where relegated also so he would be picked up cheep enough… But ruddy theres no way the toon would go for these two sadly

  • 199 ~Joke-innear~ // Jul 19, 2013 at 9:08 PM

Bent was at Villa. I don’t suppose you want Bent here then?

Fact of the matter is, Le Fondre brought them goals despite starting on the bench for most of their games.

Who on our bench bangs in the goals for us and act’s as an impact Player?

    Ameobi? Obertan?

Marveux is really our only attacking threat off the bench… he shouldn’t even be on the bench in the first place.

I know, and it’s damaging to dream while Ashley is in charge…if we had Hernandez, Bent, Cisse and Goofy, with Campbell nipping their heels we’d have quite a potent attacking line up.

Shame it will never happen though.

Rightly criticises the financial stability Mashley has brought us, what exactly is it, one could argue that the selling of James Milner for 11M cost us 40M in the long run ( never mind what he was sold afterwards for) and that by not spending 10M last summeralmost cost us, by all accounts 70M which would have seen us 170M in debt, please to tell where is the stability.

I don’t think they would buy Cabaye just because we made bid on Menez. But they might demand silly money for Menez if we demand silly money for Cabaye.

  • 221 Uncertain Toon // Jul 19, 2013 at 9:26 PM

Fair one mate, i think if we want to keep Cabaye we must stay away from PSG and Monaco players. We need to be looking at clubs that are struggling financially and get the most out of Mashley’s cash up front policy.

Jail, Ashley wanted PEA (sign of his ambition!) when we didn’t get him I reckon the Kinnear took over and he needed time to decide who was uno numero target.

I don’t know if it is Gomis but I like the bit I’ve seen of him. Poacher strikers who score loads in France, Holland and other low competition countries stuggle in the Prem if the haven’t got pace or quick feet. Gomis has quick feet, he is strong and defo not slow.

If he can hold the ball up and is willing to run the channels he could be a bargain at less than £10M. We dont need a 20 goal a season CF we need someone who can get 10-15 but bring Cisse, Cabaye, HBA and Sissoko into play.

Players who can do that and score 20-30 a season – like Shearer – cost £25M+.

  • 231 Jail for Ashley // Jul 19, 2013 at 9:50 PM

Looking on, , they’re calling him Gomas, looks like the story has got legs, really hope it’s to play with Cisse though rather than replace him, along with Remy I think I would be satisfied, sorry Bills but 15M bid or not I’m not entirely convinced we went after PEA, all the other failed, deceitful, smokescreen, ,ficticious bids have made me dubious.

  • 233 Unbelievable Tekkers // Jul 19, 2013 at 10:01 PM

Thankfully we can now talk about signings.
Give it time,,lets see what happens as the transfer market,as it is just starting to warm up .
There is only a fraction of signings completed and the more juicy ones are still to be decided by bigger clubs than ourselves.
Lets hold on till the market is closed, and if we get the couple of players we need,,hats off to Ashley /Kinnear and Co, if not then they deserve to be driven out of town.
    So lets be patient!

And hell yes bent! Hes been scoring in the prem, constantly for years. What toon fan in there right mind wants a relegated bench warmer in their team!? Your a head case if u do…

    Jail, aye Gomis 🙂

Unbelievable, dont judge strikers only on the goals they score. If that was the case two strikers in a 442 would have to score 20+ each to have a good strike rate – doesnt happen.

  • 243 Uncertain Toon // Jul 19, 2013 at 10:11 PM

My sentiments exactly mate regarding Gomis. I think people have assumed he must be coming in to replace Cisse. A little bit of research tells us they’re different players entirely. He looks like a big strong lad, as you say with quick feet and also pacey and can run at defenders. Reminds me a bit like Lakuku. Like you say the game is miles apart over here and reckon it would suit his game here. He might even be able to play in the channels as well mate. Sounds a good move with maybe a bit of credence now as are reporting it. Got to be worth it if 7 million is correct.
