Alnwick, Cabaye, Vuckic, Dummett And Marveaux All Start At Rio Ave

5:09 pm, Saturday, July 20th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 247 Comments

Rio Ave FCnufc

Jak Alnwick will make his very first start in goal for Newcastle tonight at Rio Ave, as he is included in the starting eleven, which also sees Davide Santon, Steven Taylor, Yohan Cabaye and Sylvain Marveaux included.

And it’s interesting that local lad Paul Dummett keeps his place at left-back, after his Man of the Match performance last Tuesday night at Motherwell, and 22 year-old Italian Davide Santon starts at right back.

Haris Vuckic also gets a second successive start after his fine performance at Motherwell, and Yoan Gouffran is again the lone man up front for the Magpies, and Argentine International Jonas Gutierrez also gets a start tonight.

Here is the Newcastle team for tonight’s game:

Newcastle United (4-2-3-1): Jak Alnwick; Davide Santon, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Steven Taylor, Paul Dummett; Vurnon Anita, Yohan Cabaye (c); Sylvain Marveaux, Haris Vuckic, Jonas Gutierrez; Yoan Gouffran
Substitutes: Rob Elliot, Mike Williamson, Cheick Tiote, Moussa Sissoko, Gabriel Obertan, Sammy Ameobi, Shola Ameobi, Adam Campbell

Nice to see the younger players in form (Vuckic and Dummett) retain their places, rather than being resigned back to the bench and instead given the chance to show more of what they can do and bring to the team.

Give pardew something to think about when some of our top players are out of sorts during the new season, rather than sticking with them and hoping that they get back to old ways.

Apart from Jonas that is a very strong attack minded team Cabaye, Anita, Marveux and Vuckic is a midfield of proper class guessing Gouffran upfront on his own again

Also thinking is Pardew trying Dummett out at left back with a view to putting Santon on the wing ? People go on about Santon’s defending and yes he made some mistakes but for most games he was expected to cover the whole left hand side for 90 minutes and was also expected to beat 2 defenders every time and set up a player because Jonas offers nothing ahead of him

Put a proper winger ahead of him that hugs the touchline and he would not get caught out anywhere near as much as he does the hard work of pulling players out of position there just needs to be another player on his side that will then put it in the box

Dummett from what I seen at St Mirren was very attack minded and does not hesitate to put it in the box reminds me of Beresford who was one of my favourite players for the Toon!

    fair enough.

you know mike ashley isnt going to read your comments and little poems and sack pardew though dont you?

  • 25 luke.r // Jul 20, 2013 at 5:29 PM

Pardew was only part of the problem last year. You cant just call for a new manager every time something goes a bit wrong. Thats what we used to do and it go us relegated. Ashley was right to sign hm to a long deal. perhaps 8 years was a bit too long but the principle was right. He’s a good manager who had a bad season a long with the players and Ashley and co not investing in the club in the summer.

  • 39 toonfan91 // Jul 20, 2013 at 5:42 PM

I think gomis shud challenge cisse for top spot and we shud get remy to play on the left but thats just me

  • 40 luke.r // Jul 20, 2013 at 5:44 PM

thats what i would have thought. but if we got remy in then goofy would be out and that would be a shame coz i really rate him. but remy would be awesome out wide if hes not in prison that is lol

  • 41 toonfan91 // Jul 20, 2013 at 5:47 PM

    Luke.r

Yeah i also lyk goofy aswell but wudnt it be great to have benny and remy either cisse or gomis and someone direct like goofy and marv (although i prefer him in the centre) to come on from the bench

  • 42 santonthenewmaldini // Jul 20, 2013 at 5:48 PM

A front 3 of Gouffran , Remy and Arfa with Marveux of the no 10 would be exciting as you could get ! play that against the likes of Hull and watch us entertain!

  • 43 Sazzer // Jul 20, 2013 at 5:48 PM

Anita and Cabaye together going to be interesting.

  • 44 Yohan Kebab // Jul 20, 2013 at 5:48 PM

  • 45 Yohan Kebab // Jul 20, 2013 at 5:50 PM

    come on vuckic :D

  • 46 Goodfella // Jul 20, 2013 at 5:51 PM

Is this the second game in a row we are playing 4-2-3-1?

  • 47 HullMag6 // Jul 20, 2013 at 5:52 PM

According to someone called maybe Claire at a reception somewhere allegedly heard someone giving Pards earache about another potential first team striker 2+2 would say papiss spitting his dummy out all hear’say of course. So if its true wonga/religion maybe a smokescreen regarding cisse and he’s either fishing for a better contract or a way out. If cabs goes debs wont be far behind if the destination club are amenable. So tonight might be an option for first team full back set up. But what do I or we know really eh?

  • 48 toonfan91 // Jul 20, 2013 at 5:52 PM

even from what i said on remy on the left over goofy knowing our luck remy will get injured for 6 month or arrested if we sign him so goofy will have a big part to play this season regardless haha

  • 49 luke.r // Jul 20, 2013 at 5:52 PM

marv as a number 10 would be very good. hes a really intelligent player, really good at finding a pass. but yeah remy or goofy would be top. goofy really proved himself i though last season, so will be good to see him with a pre season under his belt. the thing im worried about and no one talks about on here is jonas playing. I just cant see pardew dropping him but hes so bad!

santon- surely we should be looking to do more then just play well against hull!!

  • 50 santonthenewmaldini // Jul 20, 2013 at 5:56 PM

    @luke

Aw yeah defo but its the 1st home game is it not so we need to pound them !!

Then we can turn St James’s back into a fortress!!

Can see us getting a result against City if we come out the blocks as they will be rusty!

  • 51 luke.r // Jul 20, 2013 at 5:58 PM

santon- ohhhh i dunno. i dont think ive ever been this scared of city lol. always said they need to get rid of mancini, though it was bad how they did it. But if this new guy can get them playing nice football and with the players theyve bought, we could be in for a real battering. fingers corssed that we just really go for city and put then under pressure.

  • 52 Jay K // Jul 20, 2013 at 5:58 PM

    Hull

That’s the story that came from Jeff saying he had it in an email if I am right mate.

  • 53 santonthenewmaldini // Jul 20, 2013 at 6:00 PM

    @luke

Yeah I think eventually Peleggrinno will get them playing amazing but 1st game of the season could be the time to play them as we cant really afford a tanking off City because it would be bad for our confidence!!

But yeah City will be awesome eventually but its not really teams like them that we should be beating would just be good to give them a proper game and then batter Hull and West Ham

  • 56 Ben_BKK // Jul 20, 2013 at 6:03 PM

    @ santon

That’s our problem, we often give the bigger teams games but then still lose (ie the 4-3 against Man United and most of the 7-3 against Arsenal last season) and then play like crap against the poor teams that we should be beating. We’ve been like that for ages.

  • 57 luke.r // Jul 20, 2013 at 6:05 PM

well i hope your right anyway. i live in manchester and im hopefully gonna try and get tickets for it though im not holding my breath.

we defiantly need to stop droppng points from teams like hull and west ham though. i am quite optimistic about this season. we do have a strong side if we can keep and add to the team!

Yeah that annoyed me last season how we went down to Stoke , Fulham , West Ham and Swansea without really attacking and then went gung ho against Man Utd and Arsenal !

It also kid of spelled the end of Anita in the team for the season when he shoudl have been getting more game time

Ah well maybe Pardew will get the message this season beast the crap teams and give the big teams a game no one cares if we lose them as long as we give it a go! Hated taht City away game where they were totally struggling and we just let them walk all over us

Doesn’t matter whether its a friendly or not. The squad has one DM, not one strong defensive full back and no tall commanding Prem standard CH.

We can sign Gomis, Remy and Bent and it won’t change the defensive weaknesses. If Pardew thinks signing defenders isn’t a priority and Kinnear agrees I guarantee we’ll concede a shedload of goals again next season.

Thst isn’t me overreacting to the Rio score – I’ve been saying the same thing about the squad for months.

  • 133 colwell // Jul 20, 2013 at 6:42 PM

    GeordieDan

Yeah agree mate, he has the attributes to be very good but something switches off with him constantly.

As a LB Mbiwa was by far our most superior when played there, his awareness and pace made him the best defensive LB we have had for a while. Mbiwa though is better than Saylor. So Santon needs too improve quick.

  • 134 Yohan Kebab // Jul 20, 2013 at 6:44 PM

    just saying though,

we have a full team of full internationals for top footballing nations.

2 french title winning captains, 1 whom is frances best cm, and mym

i think 4 title winners in total if not more, cabs, mym, debs, anita, (arfa?)

and we have a fullback who was named the next maldini by mourinho (santon, who is now said to not be able to defend)

i know its only a friendly etc but surely as a team we should be doing better than this?

  • 135 89Norcal // Jul 20, 2013 at 6:44 PM

Santon was a winger in his youth days so it’s naturally in him.

Maybe there’s a lot of stiffness in their legs, if they’ve just begun an intense fitness regime, the like none of them have undergone before?

That is the primary objective of pre-season, after all.

Still doesn’t satisfy me. Especially as from the few reports, it seems like we’re not attempting to design a new way of playing, which alongside fitness, is what pre-season allows for without any repercussions.

  • 154 Ginger // Jul 20, 2013 at 7:09 PM

Lets be honest here, we put out far from the best line up.

Jak Alnwick – His first appearance with these players, you need chemistry between a goalkeeper and his defense. Not to mention he’s young and has never made a senior appearance.

Davide Santon – Is a left-back, not a right-back. Will take a lot of time to convert him into a right-back if that’s what Pardew is trying to do.

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Steven Taylor – Have never played well together.

Paul Dummet – Still coming to terms with the team.

Vurnon Anita and Yohan Cabaye (c); – Once again have never played well together, Cabaye should not be captain.

Sylvain Marveaux and Jonas Gutierrez – Neither of them are wingers yet are being played there. Marveaux is a CAM/CF, Guttierez is a hardworking pint of milk.

    Says it all really…

  • 172 djm... // Jul 20, 2013 at 7:20 PM

Toonking, I disagree. Not many teams play with the defensive winger any more, most rely on two defensive midfielders to cover them gaps now. Ben Arfa will be tremendous for us if we give him something to play with, like a real attacking midfielder and fast left sided player.

These days teams play with a ridged back 6 and a very fluid 4 in attack. You don’t see much defending from the likes of silva, mata, hazard etc.

The result is somewhat excusable but the ‘floated balls to Gouffran’, ‘Cabaye sitting deep’, ‘Newcastle on the back foot’ and ‘Shola on to shake things up’ are certainly not.

Lose by trying new things not by doing the same old shit.

  • 234 Belfast // Jul 20, 2013 at 7:59 PM

I’m not to fussed about the result to be honest.

Worried that he seems to be using the same failed tactics as last season though.

“Shola on to shake things up”

    made me lol

It’s very important for the future of this club that Pardew is sacked with immediate effect and it’s also very important to let the players that want to go also leave with immediate effect.

Cabaye wants to go so let him go

Cisse wants to go…the wonga thing’s a load of bollocks…he’s wanted to go since April…so let him go.

We need to clear the decks and only have players at the club that want to play for the club managed by a manager who know’s what he’s doing.

Change is needed and it needs to happen to now or we lose another season

Evening guys, just in from Manchester Comic con and was wondering if I’d actually missed anything in the world of NUFC today (other than the fact I see we’re not playing so well tonight)?

  • 239 Toon1978 // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:07 PM

All Pards needs to do is put players in their strongest position. Why does he continue to put Marveaux on th wing and Jonas on the pitch full stop lol? I also agree with a comment further up the page, i want to see us wing all games. Friendlies or League and cup games.

  • 240 sparky55 // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:09 PM

toon1978…what makes you think Pardew knows what each players best position is?

He’s completely clueless and that’s why he needs to go

  • 241 John Tudor // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:09 PM

    result immaterial
come up against better sides i hate to think of scores
fresh blood should have been in sooner rather than later cant comment further till i see the team in action
    but tactically ffin crap

  • 242 Sazzer // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:10 PM

Bayern under Pep Guardiola so far:

    Games – 7
    Goals – 54
    Goals Conceded – 2

    #FCB

    So don’t worry it’s only pre-season.

A “strong philosophy” of tactics doesn’t get reset just because we’ve reached the end of the season. Poor tactics is all he knows and it has been like that at his previous clubs. Just talk to some of their fans. No matter what silver his tongue spins.

Yes, the quality of the players can provide some hope of scraping by, but that is just papering over the cracks of a team effectiveness which is truly diabolical.

if we get gomis and remy this should be the team 42121
    krul
    debuchy colo mbiwa santon
    anita sissoko
    hba
    remy gouffran
    gomis

if cisse stays he could play insted of gouffran

  • 245 John Tudor // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:13 PM

    out done by a 20 y o egyptian
    wow says a lot dunnit

  • 246 Rotonda heights // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:20 PM

Why do people think Pardew is magically going to change
his mindset. He jokingly claimed his teams are always on the front foot and play exciting attacking football and that last season was just a blip. His CV would suggest otherwise.

I don’t think you could find anyone so diametrically opposed to the KK philosophy.
