There is good news in the local papers this morning that Newcastle’s number one target Bafetimbi Gomis of Lyon, has made it clear his number one choice for a move this summer is to Newcastle United. We always knew this lad was very sensible and intelligent. 😀
Bafetimbi Gomis – wants to join Newcastle
And it seems he has been talking to a number of the French players already at Newcastle, and good things are being said about the club and about the City of Newcastle, and that should help his move go through to the Tyneside club, which would be just great.
But the Evening Chronicle is reporting that Papiss Cisse will in all likelihood be leaving the club, and if that happens we’d be very surprised, and it would not good.
Here are some extended comments by Alan Pardew this morning in the transfer front:
“The Lyon president has come out and said we are involved with Gomis – and I can confirm we are.” “Bafetimbi is a player we think could do very well for us. He is in our sights.”
“We are trying to strengthen our attacking area. In midfield and at the back we are comfortable.” “I really feel there will be a player or two who moves on because of a little overload in midfield.”
That;s an interesting last comment by Alan, and apart from Dan Gosling, Romain Amalfitano and Mehdi Abeid, we wonder which other midfielder will leave the club this summer, although those may be the players he’s talking about possibly leaving.
Gomis has told his advisers to get a move arranged to Newcastle, and we hope that Joe Kinnear and Lee Charnley, the Newcastle secretary, are both working hard on that, but another striker is also being pursued.
Aston Villa are also said to be interested in the French striker, but with Christian Benteke just signing a new four-year deal to stay at Villa they may have lost interest.
But that also means that Darren Bent can be unloaded quickly, and apparently Newcastle are still interested, although that’s been the case all summer, since Darren is not even training with the first team,
And for £7M or less for Bafetimbi Gomis is a lot better deal than having to pay £6M for Bent, although Gomis does turn 28 next month and Bent turns 30 in February.
There’s no doubt that Gomis would be a good signing for Newcastle, and he has an excellent record with Lyon playing 189 games with 74 goals, and in his previous three years at St. Etienne he played 118 times with 45 goals.
But we’d still want to keep Papiss Cisse on Tyneside, and we’d be very disappointed if because we have Wonga as the new Newcastle shirt sponsor, we lose one of our best players, but it’s looking like that could be the case. 🙁
What do you think?

Comment #1Ed, if cisse leaves that would be indeed an unbelievable turn of events as he seemed to love the Toon shirt after Ba left, and also has a local girlfriend if I am not mistaken.

Perhaps Villa were playing hardball as it was uncertain until the other day whether Benteke would leave.
I’m surprised that Villa supposedly valued Bent so highly as they seem to be doing everything possible to make his life hell. A disgruntled player is the last thing a manager needs in a dressing room, unless of course they don’t allow him through the door!

Comment #6Really hope we can get gomis, been a fan of his for a long time, quick, strong, tidy finisher, and different to what we’ve got. Can’t believe people aren’t more excited about getting him.

I’m of that opinion too. It was the same with Ba. Could it be a Senegalese thing? Is it he is trying to cash in before he has competition for the forward positions?

Comment #9@Jamsha Every individual has his own set of principles which shouldn’t be influenced by what you or I say. Having taken such a strong stance, I think it would be humiliating for Cisse to now step back. I really do not see much light at the end of the tunnel, IF , and its a big IF, that there is ‘genuinely’ a Cisse-Wonga breakingpoint issue, and not simply media hype.

Comment #13Being 28 next month, he’s in the prime of his career. Get him in ASAP, and let him settle, a decent pre season with him and we’ve got an exceptional strike partnership, providing cisse stays.

A club cannot be dictated to by any player, especially when it comes to generating revenue. The club comes first and that means all the people employed by the club.
The Wonga deal helps pays the wages of all those employees who aren’t players. Would they support Cisse if their job was on the line? Would fans pay more for ticket prices if there was no sponsorship?

Comment #19At last things seem to be moving forward!! I’m just wondering if cisse has had his head turned by others? ( his advisors, friends, family) this situation just seems to have happend so quickly….does anyone else feel this?
He cannit see man

Comment #20Provided everybody stays fit, I can see why a few midfield players could be moving on…As long as it isn’t any of our stars.
I’m starting to have mixed views on Cisse, no doubt he is a good player and can score some great goals, and i love him at newcastle, but if he has another season offside we could possibly benefit from replacing him with somebody who won’t waste those chances.
If he does end up leaving I can see gomis, bent and Remy as realistic signings. Alongside Campbell and goofy we could be fairly well stocked up front.

Comment #21Don’t know anything about this lad.
Just think France are a very average national side at the moment and he isn’t even the starting forward….might be good though so won’t complain about getting a player in.
Just prefer is to sign a top class striker…no reason we can’t go for a better player.

Just better than 1 goal in 3 in the French league … and why didn’t we buy him earlier so he could do preseason training with the squad?

We could have stayed with virgin money…or another reputable sponsor.
Apparently under virgin we got 10mil a season hock was tenth best on Europe…I doubt wonga pay significantly more than that.
That stat was taken from a paper…see online if you search prem league sponsorship deals

Comment #32I don’t want to see Cisse leave but would be happy if Remy and Gomis were signed although I would like to have four good strikers with AC being sent on loan to Birmingham I don’t think it fits with our policy nevertheless an ideal window for me would be Remy, Gomis and Sinclair in and Gosling ,
Obertan and Ameobi sent the other way.

Quality team with only 1 addition, people are panicking over the lack of recruitment, but seem to be forgetting that our team is pretty damn good when at full strength. We don’t need a major overhaul, just some strength off the bench, to change the game when it’s going wrong.

I just want to start with a quick apology to Sir Toon Gospel if he is around. He said Ben Arfa and Tiote weren’t observing Ramadan, and I said they were.
I spoke a Muslim coach friend of mine who works with Muslim kids in Newcastle just to get some info on his thoughts. Occasionally they get someone famous in to have a chat with the kids, and answer questions. Anyway, earlier this year they had Tiote along to a session and he was asked how Prem players cope with Ramadan. He said some observe it to the letter, such as Cisse, Ba etc. Others like himself, Ben Arfa, the Toures and the majority of others observe it but break their fast the day before a match, and on a match day, and resume after. He said when he tried to observe it fully he found he could only operate at around 60%. I’ve since found a quote from HBA which pretty much backed this up, but it was in broken english so not conclusive.

I think it has nothing to do with Wonga.
If a player is so principled he should have had it in his contract. The club and the fans would have respected that.
There is now little or no respect by many fans for him as there is no difference between Virgin or Wonga with regards to principles.
All I can think is that Cisse wants more money whether by Newcastle or some other club.
