Bafetimbi Gomis Itching To Join Newcastle – But Cisse To Leave

8:38 am, Saturday, July 20th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 57 Comments

There is good news in the local papers this morning that Newcastle’s number one target Bafetimbi Gomis of Lyon, has made it clear his number one choice for a move this summer is to Newcastle United. We always knew this lad was very sensible and intelligent. :D

Bafetimbi Gomis - wants to join Newcastle

And it seems he has been talking to a number of the French players already at Newcastle, and good things are being said about the club and about the City of Newcastle, and that should help his move go through to the Tyneside club, which would be just great.

But the Evening Chronicle is reporting that Papiss Cisse will in all likelihood be leaving the club, and if that happens we’d be very surprised, and it would not good.

Here are some extended comments by Alan Pardew this morning in the transfer front:

“The Lyon president has come out and said we are involved with Gomis – and I can confirm we are.” “Bafetimbi is a player we think could do very well for us. He is in our sights.”

“We are trying to strengthen our attacking area. In midfield and at the back we are comfortable.” “I really feel there will be a player or two who moves on because of a little overload in midfield.”

That;s an interesting last comment by Alan, and apart from Dan Gosling, Romain Amalfitano and Mehdi Abeid, we wonder which other midfielder will leave the club this summer, although those may be the players he’s talking about possibly leaving.

Gomis has told his advisers to get a move arranged to Newcastle, and we hope that Joe Kinnear and Lee Charnley, the Newcastle secretary, are both working hard on that, but another striker is also being pursued.

Aston Villa are also said to be interested in the French striker, but with Christian Benteke just signing a new four-year deal to stay at Villa they may have lost interest.

But that also means that Darren Bent can be unloaded quickly, and apparently Newcastle are still interested, although that’s been the case all summer, since Darren is not even training with the first team,

And for £7M or less for Bafetimbi Gomis is a lot better deal than having to pay £6M for Bent, although Gomis does turn 28 next month and Bent turns 30 in February.

There’s no doubt that Gomis would be a good signing for Newcastle, and he has an excellent record with Lyon playing 189 games with 74 goals, and in his previous three years at St. Etienne he played 118 times with 45 goals.

But we’d still want to keep Papiss Cisse on Tyneside, and we’d be very disappointed if because we have Wonga as the new Newcastle shirt sponsor, we lose one of our best players, but it’s looking like that could be the case. :(

What do you think?

Ed, if cisse leaves that would be indeed an unbelievable turn of events as he seemed to love the Toon shirt after Ba left, and also has a local girlfriend if I am not mistaken.

    its all about the money,money,money

    Toon Down South

Perhaps Villa were playing hardball as it was uncertain until the other day whether Benteke would leave.

I’m surprised that Villa supposedly valued Bent so highly as they seem to be doing everything possible to make his life hell. A disgruntled player is the last thing a manager needs in a dressing room, unless of course they don’t allow him through the door!

  • 4 JAMSHA // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:44 AM

Good… on cisse i realy dnt care he should play footbll.not wory wat wonga are doing… wonga are payn to our club… …

  • 6 NotEvenGeordie // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:46 AM

Really hope we can get gomis, been a fan of his for a long time, quick, strong, tidy finisher, and different to what we’ve got. Can’t believe people aren’t more excited about getting him.

  • 7 Slank // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:46 AM

    John Tudor

I’m of that opinion too. It was the same with Ba. Could it be a Senegalese thing? Is it he is trying to cash in before he has competition for the forward positions?

  • 8 John Tudor // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:47 AM

he will go to anzi spotted talking earlier in the week
so its all about the ruble, oops no he’ll be paid in dollars

  • 9 IITianToon // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:48 AM

@Jamsha Every individual has his own set of principles which shouldn’t be influenced by what you or I say. Having taken such a strong stance, I think it would be humiliating for Cisse to now step back. I really do not see much light at the end of the tunnel, IF , and its a big IF, that there is ‘genuinely’ a Cisse-Wonga breakingpoint issue, and not simply media hype.

Haven’t seen Tomis so don’t know what he is like but good to see we are finally doing some business.

Being 28 next month, he’s in the prime of his career. Get him in ASAP, and let him settle, a decent pre season with him and we’ve got an exceptional strike partnership, providing cisse stays.

  • 14 Ben3arfa // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:49 AM

If we can get a decent fee from Anzhi for Cisse then aurevoir Papiss

I dont know about you all but I would love for big Demba Ba to return if Cisse goes

  • 18 Slank // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:55 AM

    IITianToon @ 9

A club cannot be dictated to by any player, especially when it comes to generating revenue. The club comes first and that means all the people employed by the club.

The Wonga deal helps pays the wages of all those employees who aren’t players. Would they support Cisse if their job was on the line? Would fans pay more for ticket prices if there was no sponsorship?

  • 19 sidecutter // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:55 AM

At last things seem to be moving forward!! I’m just wondering if cisse has had his head turned by others? ( his advisors, friends, family) this situation just seems to have happend so quickly….does anyone else feel this?

  • 20 He cannit see man // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:56 AM

Provided everybody stays fit, I can see why a few midfield players could be moving on…As long as it isn’t any of our stars.

I’m starting to have mixed views on Cisse, no doubt he is a good player and can score some great goals, and i love him at newcastle, but if he has another season offside we could possibly benefit from replacing him with somebody who won’t waste those chances.

If he does end up leaving I can see gomis, bent and Remy as realistic signings. Alongside Campbell and goofy we could be fairly well stocked up front.

  • 21 Transfer Sage // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:57 AM

Don’t know anything about this lad.

Just think France are a very average national side at the moment and he isn’t even the starting forward….might be good though so won’t complain about getting a player in.

Just prefer is to sign a top class striker…no reason we can’t go for a better player.

  • 22 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:57 AM

Get this lad, Ba back if cisse leaves and some one like Remy/Ben Yedder/Mathaius Suarez

  • 23 JFK junior // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:58 AM

So how would people think if we sold cisse and brought in Gomis and Remy?

    Gouff – Remy – gomis – Campbell

Cheeky loan deal for Ba with option to buy is now the talk of the toon.

  • 24 fat spuggy // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:58 AM

Cummon. Get his name right. JFK says its “Bathtime Gormless.” He should know. He’s a lot more intelligent than us.

  • 25 John Tudor // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:58 AM

  • 27 Hatem's better than Messi // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:59 AM

Sorry but I’m unimpressed with all the strikers we’ve been linked to.

Just better than 1 goal in 3 in the French league … and why didn’t we buy him earlier so he could do preseason training with the squad?

  • 28 Transfer Sage // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:59 AM

We could have stayed with virgin money…or another reputable sponsor.

Apparently under virgin we got 10mil a season hock was tenth best on Europe…I doubt wonga pay significantly more than that.

That stat was taken from a paper…see online if you search prem league sponsorship deals

  • 29 JFK junior // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:59 AM

    And shipped out shola.

  • 30 Slank // Jul 20, 2013 at 8:59 AM

    sidecutter @ 19

Yes, me too. His head has been turned and the reasons given by the press is just a smoke screen hoping he will get sympathy but it just doesn’t wash.

  • 31 John Tudor // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:01 AM

i say lets have some south american talent ala the robledos

  • 32 Jail for Ashley // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:01 AM

I don’t want to see Cisse leave but would be happy if Remy and Gomis were signed although I would like to have four good strikers with AC being sent on loan to Birmingham I don’t think it fits with our policy nevertheless an ideal window for me would be Remy, Gomis and Sinclair in and Gosling ,
Obertan and Ameobi sent the other way.

  • 33 Toon Avenger // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:03 AM

    Some of you are morons!

If its true that we could sign him for £4 million why would some turn their noses up at Gomis?

You’ll find anything to moan about you sad sad people.

    It’s always doom and gloom.

  • 34 NotEvenGeordie // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:05 AM

    Debuchy colo mapou santon

    Anita Sissoko

    Hba Cabaye Marveaux

Quality team with only 1 addition, people are panicking over the lack of recruitment, but seem to be forgetting that our team is pretty damn good when at full strength. We don’t need a major overhaul, just some strength off the bench, to change the game when it’s going wrong.

  • 35 Ben3arfa // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:05 AM

Portuguese newspaper Record have reported that NUFC have bid for Oscar Cardozo which has delayed his likely move to Fenerbache #nufc

Record have claimed Newcastle United’s sudden move for Cardozo is due to the issues they are having with current forward Papiss Cisse #nufc

  • 36 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:05 AM

    Morning all,
I just want to start with a quick apology to Sir Toon Gospel if he is around. He said Ben Arfa and Tiote weren’t observing Ramadan, and I said they were.

I spoke a Muslim coach friend of mine who works with Muslim kids in Newcastle just to get some info on his thoughts. Occasionally they get someone famous in to have a chat with the kids, and answer questions. Anyway, earlier this year they had Tiote along to a session and he was asked how Prem players cope with Ramadan. He said some observe it to the letter, such as Cisse, Ba etc. Others like himself, Ben Arfa, the Toures and the majority of others observe it but break their fast the day before a match, and on a match day, and resume after. He said when he tried to observe it fully he found he could only operate at around 60%. I’ve since found a quote from HBA which pretty much backed this up, but it was in broken english so not conclusive.

  • 37 John Tudor // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:05 AM

whoa sweeping remark gomis is ok by me

  • 38 Slank // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:08 AM

    Transfer Sage @ 27

I think it has nothing to do with Wonga.

If a player is so principled he should have had it in his contract. The club and the fans would have respected that.

There is now little or no respect by many fans for him as there is no difference between Virgin or Wonga with regards to principles.

All I can think is that Cisse wants more money whether by Newcastle or some other club.

  • 39 John Tudor // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:08 AM

ben i said that last week, i was shot down.
money the guy just signed new deal he was too old . i then said he was off to fenerbahce
get this guy plays an english style

  • 40 Jail for Ashley // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:11 AM

Well according to Toon Danno Cisse will fly out to Portugal and put this media sh!t stirring rumours to bed

  • 41 Ben3arfa // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:11 AM

Id take Oscar Cardozo over Darren Bent any day of the week.

So what he is 30? We all saw how good he was when he played against us in the Europa League

  • 42 Indian Magpie // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:11 AM

Oscar Cardozo, NUFC, something is not right

  • 43 geordiesteve520 // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:12 AM

Wondering if we will go for Sakho…I know Pardew says we are comfortable at the back but quality is quality and osg have just splashed £27 million on Marquinhos.

  • 44 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:12 AM

True we could of stayed with virgin, but we didn’t

So know Mr. Ashley had to either back his player or back his choice
I think we both know which choice he will make!

  • 45 NotEvenGeordie // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:14 AM

Can anyone actually tell me if the club has confirmed the reason cisse isn’t in Portugal is because of the shirt thing? Maybe he’s been left behind because of Ramadan, and its completely been blown out of proportion. I don’t believe anything the media say these days,

Apart from this Cardozo rumour, that’s 100% accurate.
    I hope.

  • 46 John Tudor // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:15 AM

the name on the back is no where near as big as the badge on the front

  • 47 Slank // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:16 AM

    Lilongwe Geordie @ 35

    Very interesting and very believable.

I know that Diabetics (being one myself) get special dispensation to eat during Ramadan. Muslims who live in Norway, Sweden or Finland during the summer also get special dispensation as the sun never sets at higher latitudes.

  • 48 John Tudor // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:17 AM

what if cordozo lied about his age to avoid a national service callup

  • 49 NotEvenGeordie // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:18 AM

    @ ben3arfa
Cardozo over bent? Is that even a discussion? Cardozo every day of the week for me, pure class. 30 or not, throw cash at them and him until we get him, brilliant player. I’d take bent as a back up, to replace shola, but Cardozo would be awesome.

  • 50 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:18 AM

Wonga pay us £8million a year, but as ever with Dekka’s dealings there are lots of other supposed hidden contributions. Wonga supposedly footed the bill for various training ground and academy improvements, and the like. I think Branson came out and said that in pure cash terms Virgin offered more.

The whole thing seems very shady.

  • 51 Slank // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:19 AM

‘.. Ashley had to either back his player or back his choice..’

Only one winner, the club comes first.

  • 52 supershola // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:24 AM

Lets hope Gomis is not a replacement for Cisse….

Slank , totally agree the club comes first. What happens if they let him wear a top without wonga. Whats to stop the rest of the muslims on the team asking to do the same.

    Can’t be done

  • 53 geordiemark // Jul 20, 2013 at 9:33 AM

id settle for gomis, id like remy as well as a winger in before the season starts that would build my hopes up a bit :) cissie reckon hes gone to far now no turning back for him, I still think cabaye will be sold as well and maybe ben arfa to

  • 54 HullMag6 // Jul 20, 2013 at 10:27 AM

So we are looking at signing Gomis, Remy, Bent AND Cardozo? Wtf?

Sign all of them then its bye bye Cisse and Shola and then Campbell out on loan to championship club.

Anyone else notice Danny Graham has left the unwashed to join up with Harps and Agent Bruce.

Cisse stance on wonga is a leverage move, acting a prima donna when competition is looming trying not to look mercenary as Ba did thanks to his agents. If it was a wonga problem it would’ve been apparent last year when it was announced not when a transfer wondow opens – call me cynical.

Is tiote or obertan next out I wonder neither are big misses.

  • 55 isleofmanman // Jul 20, 2013 at 11:15 AM

Ignoring cockney Wonga’s cynical business practices appears to be fine for the Premier League, the Fat Controller – and most of the Toon from what comments I’ve read

Rapped by the Office of Fair Trading in 2012 for awful debt collection practices and some customers paying interest rates of 4,000%+ means that Wonga is a barking bad and embarrassing sponsor to have on the shirt

Will they still be around to pay the Year 3 sponsorship cash? Its 50/50

Sadly, only success followed by the sale of NUFC to someone any good will rid us of this collective of southern brigands

  • 56 Sav // Jul 20, 2013 at 11:20 AM

Gomi in, Cisse out – still leaves us short of 2 more strikers? Unless Shola….

  • 57 Dearka // Jul 20, 2013 at 12:28 PM

if cisse is forced to leave that just wrong because a player play’s for the team badges not the logo arcoss the chest and NUFC and PFA should be backing the player all the way, now cisse did offer stright away that he would wear a chartiy logo of wonga choseing but they said no so in the end NUFC will have to pick between the player an wonga i hope cisse stay.
