Newcastle Refer Independent Article On Owner To Lawyers

There was an article in the Independent yesterday, that we thought was quite complimentary to Mike Ashley, and it does mentions some personal things about the owner, such as he has recently reconciled with his former wife Linda.

mike ashley 321

Mike Ashley – Newcastle not happy with Independent article on owner

It also says Mike Ashley is entirely ruthless in the business world, but that doesn’t surprise us, because to be successful in big business you have to be motivated, and although it’s not always pretty, you don’t let emotions get in the way of some of the hard business decisions.

In fact Mike showed that ruthless streak at Newcastle, when he fired Chris Hughton right out of the blue in December, 2010, after Chris had done so well in getting the club immediately promoted back to the Premier League the season before.

Here is the article – if you want to read it – but again it’s fairly complimentary to the Newcastle owner – unless we are missing something.

So we were surprised yesterday when the Newcastle United’s official Twitter account issued this tweet:

“The club is aware of the article in today’s Independent and has referred the matter to its lawyers. Thanks to fans who have raised concerns”

Not sure exactly what’s upsetting the club, although the writer Jim Armitage does mention Mike’s not all that popular with Newcastle fans, and that he has a beer gut, but both of those points are fairly accurate.

It will be interesting what Newcastle’s lawyers do about this – if anything – but we thought it was good that Mike had recently reunited with his former wife Linda.

But Mike also guards his privacy, and there are a lot of personal details about the Billionaire in the article, and maybe that’s what’s being objected to.

But that comes with the territory of being the owner of a rather big and famous football club in north-east England.

What do you think?

Update and clarification: The original article accused our supporters of being antisemitic and chanting antisemitic chants to Ashley and it was quickly removed – that’s why Newcastle are bringing in the lawyers because it simply is not true.

sparky rotananda indian john and any other pardew out brigade please can you keep your fu<king mouth shut and stop with this pardew out.
I am warning you that if continue to shout for the sack you might want to leave this blog because the latest story about mick harford is the final part of the jicksaw.
cashley basically didn't want to sack pardew as he would have to pay a big amount of money so instead he has used Kinnear as a way to try forcing pardew out and straight away will appoint the joker as manager and mick will be the assistant.

Can’t blame the people who want pardew out for that idiot Ashley appointing even worse people. Not sure why he thinks appointing ba managers is good.

If you wan a cheap manager might as well get a young, modern, unproven guy in instead of older people who have failed over and over.

This is a basic algorithm to shift Pardew out. Every time he loses, a new member of staff is appointed that has some ties with JFK and Wimbledon, next loss – John Fashanu appointed as spiritual guru.

Harford, is a rabid mackem. Who has stated on few occasions that he hates Geordies, so it should be fun when he lands at Benton. To meet Beardsley, Carver and Steve Stone.

in this day and age hiding your personal information is really an impossible ask if you ask me, cant really see what ashley will get out of this, as for pardew he should have been sacked at the end of the season end off, hartford well say no more really he wasnt a very good player was he was as much use as a chocolate watch

the club is a complete laughing stock and thats world wide and all that is down to ashley so why doesnt he just sell up least that way we wont be on his back constantly or the managers back week in week out

When a Director of football, starts hiring himself a coach. Then even Pardew, must realise its time to go. When Kinnear, came back everyone knew he would not settle for a back seat role, his ego is to massive for that. And so its adios Pardew.

Ed – Do you know why the club asked their lawyers about this?

The article, originally published yesterday, accused Newcastle United fans of anti-Semitic chants towards Mike Ashley, that down right disgusting and insulting to us.

That is why legal action was taken.

The legal action must have worked because the article has been changed to “Give us back our club you cockney c***”.

the article by the Independent has been amended. I would believe the part that is being complained about was the spurious claim that Newcastle fans are anti-semitic. Below where the article says “Says a colleague: “The one I’ve heard him sing goes something like “Give us back our club you cockney c***”.”…it originally has another quote by the “colleague” that said something like: he really is amused by the anti-semitic chant about him being jewish…and….”contrary to popular belief on Tyneside” the owner is not Jewish. The article did not defend anything, but left this quote as said, giving the impression that NUFC supporters are stupid, and anti semitic. As we all know on here that there is NO hint of this at the matches, and his religious upbringing has never entered the audible forum of debate about his ownership. It was a scandalous part of an otherwise straight forward article. I am glad NUFC have brought this up, and the article has been amended. I am waiting for my apology from the paper as I had emailled them right away.

AMENDED REPOST FROM Jul 21, 2013 at 10:45 AM

The Independent article is indeed very pro-Ashley, almost a PR profile, and I strongly suspect he knew it was going to be printed. However, initially the article had reader comments attached (Friday night) where several people (probably fans) took issue with the lack of veracity and some downright lies contained, above all Ashley’s camp claiming he suffered anti-Semitic abuse from NUFC fans, although he himself is not Jewish.

As soon as those (rightly) outraged comments were posted in response I am guessing Ashley’s lawyers got on the phone, and the whole comments section was cut soon after. That’s what friends are for.

The only interesting (= damaging to Ashley) section of the article was the admission Ashley bought the club to sell it straight on (called a ‘flip’ in the trade, apparently) but he screwed up the deal – so no surprises there then – and was left holding the baby.

Once business requirements go beyond ‘pile ‘em high, sell ‘em cheap(ish)’ the guy is totally lost. He can certainly dish it out but he can’t take it.

Nowt wrong with the article I thought it a balanced piece of writing, mirrored the facts as I see them.
Sad if he/the club are going to sue the paper – better things to do – like buying a couple of players.
