Newcastle Refer Independent Article On Owner To Lawyers

11:15 am, Sunday, July 21st, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 252 Comments

There was an article in the Independent yesterday, that we thought was quite complimentary to Mike Ashley, and it does mentions some personal things about the owner, such as he has recently reconciled with his former wife Linda.

mike ashley 321

Mike Ashley - Newcastle not happy with Independent article on owner

It also says Mike Ashley is entirely ruthless in the business world, but that doesn’t surprise us, because to be successful in big business you have to be motivated, and although it’s not always pretty, you don’t let emotions get in the way of some of the hard business decisions.

In fact Mike showed that ruthless streak at Newcastle, when he fired Chris Hughton right out of the blue in December, 2010, after Chris had done so well in getting the club immediately promoted back to the Premier League the season before.

Here is the article – if you want to read it – but again it’s fairly complimentary to the Newcastle owner – unless we are missing something.

So we were surprised yesterday when the Newcastle United’s official Twitter account issued this tweet:

“The club is aware of the article in today’s Independent and has referred the matter to its lawyers. Thanks to fans who have raised concerns”

Not sure exactly what’s upsetting the club, although the writer Jim Armitage does mention Mike’s not all that popular with Newcastle fans, and that he has a beer gut, but both of those points are fairly accurate.

It will be interesting what Newcastle’s lawyers do about this – if anything – but we thought it was good that Mike had recently reunited with his former wife Linda.

But Mike also guards his privacy, and there are a lot of personal details about the Billionaire in the article, and maybe that’s what’s being objected to.

But that comes with the territory of being the owner of a rather big and famous football club in north-east England.

What do you think?

Update and clarification: The original article accused our supporters of being antisemitic and chanting antisemitic chants to Ashley and it was quickly removed – that’s why Newcastle are bringing in the lawyers because it simply is not true.

sparky rotananda indian john and any other pardew out brigade please can you keep your fu<king mouth shut and stop with this pardew out.
I am warning you that if continue to shout for the sack you might want to leave this blog because the latest story about mick harford is the final part of the jicksaw.
cashley basically didn't want to sack pardew as he would have to pay a big amount of money so instead he has used Kinnear as a way to try forcing pardew out and straight away will appoint the joker as manager and mick will be the assistant.

  • 3 Jail for Ashley // Jul 21, 2013 at 11:21 AM

I think you are right on all counts except it will ne Harford as manager with Media Joe upstairs, Rafa Benitez ha ha ha, it really is beyond a joke.

  • 4 lesh // Jul 21, 2013 at 11:21 AM

Ashley to feature on Monday’s page three?

    Why not.

  • 5 Transfer Sage // Jul 21, 2013 at 11:25 AM

Can’t blame the people who want pardew out for that idiot Ashley appointing even worse people. Not sure why he thinks appointing ba managers is good.

If you wan a cheap manager might as well get a young, modern, unproven guy in instead of older people who have failed over and over.

harford is a mackem, born and bred in sunderland

  • 7 Bring Back Laurent Robert // Jul 21, 2013 at 11:26 AM

This is a basic algorithm to shift Pardew out. Every time he loses, a new member of staff is appointed that has some ties with JFK and Wimbledon, next loss – John Fashanu appointed as spiritual guru.

What chance of Mick Harford being forced on Pardew as a coach in a sick ploy to get him to walk

Harford, is a rabid mackem. Who has stated on few occasions that he hates Geordies, so it should be fun when he lands at Benton. To meet Beardsley, Carver and Steve Stone.

  • 18 plana // Jul 21, 2013 at 11:37 AM

Its a power grab, Pardew, will be gone before the new season starts. Old Joe, will be sitting in the dugout.

in this day and age hiding your personal information is really an impossible ask if you ask me, cant really see what ashley will get out of this, as for pardew he should have been sacked at the end of the season end off, hartford well say no more really he wasnt a very good player was he was as much use as a chocolate watch

the club is a complete laughing stock and thats world wide and all that is down to ashley so why doesnt he just sell up least that way we wont be on his back constantly or the managers back week in week out

  • 26 viv // Jul 21, 2013 at 11:44 AM

When a Director of football, starts hiring himself a coach. Then even Pardew, must realise its time to go. When Kinnear, came back everyone knew he would not settle for a back seat role, his ego is to massive for that. And so its adios Pardew.

  • 27 awb83 // Jul 21, 2013 at 11:44 AM

Ed – Do you know why the club asked their lawyers about this?

The article, originally published yesterday, accused Newcastle United fans of anti-Semitic chants towards Mike Ashley, that down right disgusting and insulting to us.

That is why legal action was taken.

The legal action must have worked because the article has been changed to “Give us back our club you cockney c***”.

  • 28 toon kk // Jul 21, 2013 at 11:45 AM

  • 29 Patoon // Jul 21, 2013 at 11:46 AM

why is it that any team that Saylor starts in the defence plays completely shit, any defence this man starts in is always all over the place, Campbell would prob do better as a center half, we def need 2 sign a center half of cover if colo or yanga mbiwa gets injured

  • 30 Bunnyman123 // Jul 21, 2013 at 11:47 AM

the article by the Independent has been amended. I would believe the part that is being complained about was the spurious claim that Newcastle fans are anti-semitic. Below where the article says “Says a colleague: “The one I’ve heard him sing goes something like “Give us back our club you cockney c***”.”…it originally has another quote by the “colleague” that said something like: he really is amused by the anti-semitic chant about him being jewish…and….”contrary to popular belief on Tyneside” the owner is not Jewish. The article did not defend anything, but left this quote as said, giving the impression that NUFC supporters are stupid, and anti semitic. As we all know on here that there is NO hint of this at the matches, and his religious upbringing has never entered the audible forum of debate about his ownership. It was a scandalous part of an otherwise straight forward article. I am glad NUFC have brought this up, and the article has been amended. I am waiting for my apology from the paper as I had emailled them right away.

  • 31 Spotlight Kid // Jul 21, 2013 at 11:48 AM

AMENDED REPOST FROM Jul 21, 2013 at 10:45 AM

The Independent article is indeed very pro-Ashley, almost a PR profile, and I strongly suspect he knew it was going to be printed. However, initially the article had reader comments attached (Friday night) where several people (probably fans) took issue with the lack of veracity and some downright lies contained, above all Ashley’s camp claiming he suffered anti-Semitic abuse from NUFC fans, although he himself is not Jewish.

As soon as those (rightly) outraged comments were posted in response I am guessing Ashley’s lawyers got on the phone, and the whole comments section was cut soon after. That’s what friends are for.

The only interesting (= damaging to Ashley) section of the article was the admission Ashley bought the club to sell it straight on (called a ‘flip’ in the trade, apparently) but he screwed up the deal – so no surprises there then – and was left holding the baby.

Once business requirements go beyond ‘pile ‘em high, sell ‘em cheap(ish)’ the guy is totally lost. He can certainly dish it out but he can’t take it.

JFA..sorry bout that…not always easy to put in concise words what I’m thinking when wound up by Pardew and his pathetic excuses…guess that’s why my school reports always said “could do better’! :-)

IMO opinion pardew doesn’t deserve to be there after last year and already this pre-season is not showing any sign of changing his style of playing which after last years pathetic showing is strange to say the least.

I also strongly believe one of the reasons some players may not come is because they’ve seen the way newcastle play under Pardew and don’t want to be part of a team that plays that way…so yes…pardew will also put players off coming to nufc IMO

I think Lambias knew there is no money for new players unless we sell first – so resigned.

This Mick Harford is just another ploy to force Pards out and for the fans to take our eyes off the fact we still have not signed anyone.

All the rumours of the last 25 targets have not produced one new signing !!!!!

Can anyone on this blog say for absolute certainty we will definitely sign players without first generating money from sales. I can’t. ……

We need at least two offensive players, keeper, 8-10 goal cb and a pacey winger…..

  • 111 G // Jul 21, 2013 at 1:33 PM

Bambams, technically we already signed a player without generating income, in that development player from Metz who’s name has escaped me. I do believe we will sign at least 2 first team / squad players before the end of the window, I cant prove that, but I have a feeling that it will happen. I would prefer 4 or 5 new faces, but suspect 2 or 3 will be our lot. Lets not forget that 3 of the 5 lads we signed in Jan were supposed to be summer targets.

  • 117 Rooster // Jul 21, 2013 at 1:45 PM

Even though that was a friendly yesterday, the game took the same pattern as so many of last season, ie startof slowly and concede then come back in to the game when its to late, it was a Pardew performance all over it, HE HAS GOT TO CHANGE HIS WAY OF THINKING, he is still the biggest worry for me, tactically he has got to improve, we need to be on the front foot as soon as that first whistle blows get on top of the opposition and stay there, he says there were more positives than negatives at yesterdays performance mmmmmm we got beat 3-1 Mr Pardew, give over and don’t start your crap again, there first goal yesterday and second were two very good bits of skill, but the first inparticular the lad should not ever have got between two defenders out wide, and his worry about Shola, do me a favour please, get the lad a transfer to Saudi as far away as possible, take his brother with him and Williamson for company so he can play in some B team over there, sick of the sight of them, we have to move on, and get at least two in next week, it is way past time to get down to BUSINESS??? this is your game MA lets get going, its bloo.y hard enough stickin up for you to start with ha ha, come on lets go fella.

  • 133 ~Joke-innear~ // Jul 21, 2013 at 2:15 PM

    Mister Tuff,

I have no obligation to do what you say. If you don’t wanna read what I have to say, simply scroll over the moment you see my name.

Am I not entitled to my own opinion? Am I not allowed to post said opinion on a football blog? Are my post’s breaching any rules?

Get off your high horse, I have just as much right as you do to post what I want to post here.

It is my belief that Bent no longer possesses the quality to warrant a spot in the Newcastle team, granted he might give Shola a run for his money for that vacant spot on the bench, but that is it… it is of my opinion that he cannot provide the impact we so desire by coming off the bench. Do I go around needlessly telling anyone who has a different opinion opinion to shut up?

I am not as close minded as you are to believe that everyone must share my opinion on the subject and I have no intention of telling others who have a different opinion to shut up.

Don’t see why some people have to result to being a douche, when someone has a different opinion to them. Guess it takes all kinds of people to make the world..

No preparation leads to desperation. We have not planned for the summer so it seem’s. We have been linked to every man and his dog yet still, we have no first team players through the door. I was positive about signings a few weeks back, that is diminishing dramatically. We have went from a European challenging team to a club tipping on the edge of the abyss. Pards kidding himself about having a strong back four yet when Colo is not around we ship 3-4 maybe 6 goals a game. Stop deluding yourself Pards. Negative news constantly about Cisse, negative news about Cabaye and now because NUFC taken so much time in bringing players in, other clubs are now sniffing. All this because Ashley want’s to spend as little as possible. Nothing is plain sailing at this club. But i still love this club for some strange reason….HWTL!!!

  • 154 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 21, 2013 at 2:51 PM

It was inspired by you, but directed at everyone who shares your opinion of “be positive” no need to feel paranoid haha

It would have been a much more positive move had Ashley sacked Pardew at the end of last season and appointed a young ambitious up and comer, but he has shown himself completely devoid of ambition by failing to do that.

What he has now decided to do is to appoint one of his pals as Director of Football in an attempt to force Pardew from the club. I’d have no real issue with that if his pal wasn’t bloody Joe Kinnear! If his pal was Pep Guardiola I’d be all for it, but we’re going to see a mediocre dinosaur replaced with yet another mediocre dinosaur, and so the carousel of mediocrity continues to spin!

We have all the infrastructure in place to become a massive club with sustained success, but until we have an owner who is willing to invest in order to make that dream a reality, we will always be served up with dross on a yearly basis.

Pardew is only a symptom of the wider problem, a problem that starts and ends with Mike Ashley. Until he is removed, and replaced with a more ambitious owner, we will never see proper growth in this football club.

  • 163 Rotonda heights // Jul 21, 2013 at 2:56 PM

NUFC are becoming more tragic by the day. Just when you think things couldn’t get any worse after Pardew not leaving / being sacked, JFK being appointed D.O.F and the stain and stigma of Wonga as your sponsor, then another dinosaur in the form of Harford appears. They could make Jurassic park 1V with this lot.

A great squad assembled largely by Carr’s recommendations is imploding with Cisse, Cabaye seemingly in the out tray and still no one coming in.

I defer to Solano’s superior intellect, I’m not in the business of being better or worse than any other, simply giving my opinion as I see it. But your constant attempts at “insulting” me (I put that in quotation marks because it is timid to say the least) would suggest that you either simply don’t like me, or that I bug you due to the stark contrast of my opinion to yours.

The difference between you and I is that my opinion has substantiating evidence to support it, while all you revert to is “he gave us an interest free loan” in your attempt to display your love for the fat man.

Have you ever heard of protecting your investment, that is all Mike Ashley was doing with this loan, he wasn’t doing it for the love of the club.

Like I said yesterday, a change of perspective might really open your eyes to what is truly going on at NUFC.

I’m afraid the credibility disappears. Of course you are entitled to your opinion and to post it as well – my post was intended to allow you to consider nominating La Fondre.

    Questions for the blog…

Does anyone think we have a player with real blistering pace who would get in our best eleven?

Does anyone think we have DM who can tackle and muscle the oppo off the ball other than the inconsistent and often banned Tiote?

Doex anyone think we have a full back whose strength is defending?

Does anyone think we have a defender who is capable of scoring from a corner?

If you even have to think about the answers it might just prove that our squad – whilst strong in good footballers – is weak in the all round areas needed to turn out a strong team.

Ruddy – if you are reading this read the above if you want to know why I think Carr wants to start recommending players different to the type of players we already have.

  • 196 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 21, 2013 at 3:33 PM

So what if people are insulting kinnear Ashley or pardew

Pardew I was happy to give 10 games this season, he was saying all the right things
But for both pre season he has stuck with the rigid boring formation from last season with no imagination or creativity in midfield

Kinnear is a down right f uking idiot who has no place at this club
He’s a clueless bumbling dinosaur with no concept of the modern game
He’s been in the job for what 5 weeks now? No signings constant PR gaffs and the only thing he has done is appoint an assistant, why the hell does he need an assistant?
Because he’s pulling the same stunt as he did last time he was a DOF by preparing himself to boot the manager and appoint himself

Mike Ashley is the worst of all
    He is pond scum
Everything he does shows disrespect to the the players the club the fans and the city
Worst of all he’s a tight fisted coward as shown by his devious appointment of that snaky little drinking buddy of his kinnear
    No ambition no respect
I will celebrate the day this poisonous little c*** sells up and f cks off back to whatever hole he crawled out of

  • 197 nufc_eire // Jul 21, 2013 at 3:34 PM

    1) No pace in the sqaud. Thats why we need two wingers minimum. Remy + Sinclair would do nicely

    2) Sissoko. Could be a world class DM/box-to-box midfielder if given the chance.

    3) Haidara possibly

    4) No. We need Alderweireld for that. Also he can cover RB (which would answer 3 as well)

So Remy, Sinclair, Alderweireld + 3 more players (back up winger, attacking mid and target man striker)

Will you entertain, just for a second, the response that I gave you last night? Defensive coaching is Pardew’s remit, and if our defenders are lacking in this area, it is job to remedy it.

Football has developed from the “break the play up and nothing else” DM, for example look at the best in the business on a European level, the likes of Gundogan, Alonso, Khedeira, Busquets.

Even in our own league, the likes of Scott Parker are being replaced by more clever players such as Sandro who can use flair as well. Yaya Toure is the embodiment of this change in mentality and I would suggest that in Vurnon Anita we have our own type of player who can play this game, as well as Sissoko who I feel would work very well in a deeper role.

As for primarily defensive full backs, the very best full backs aren’t primarily defensive, they combine the balance of attack and defence. If we could improve the positioning of both Debuchy and Santon we would have top class full backs as offensively they are excellent, and it is Pardew’s job to do this.

As for blistering pace, Gouffran is lightning quick, Santon is very quick, as is Debuchy, as is M’biwa.

Funny how ALL of these players were recommended by Carr.

Your argument has no substance whatsoever.

  • 202 Rotonda heights // Jul 21, 2013 at 3:37 PM

Change the record will ya. Carr recommended Wanyama and Leroy Fer when they cost peanuts and the powers that b didn’t want to know. Those 2 are a couple of the hardest bruisers going.

I have always stood up for Ashley but even you must see that this is ”jobs for the boys”. No self respecting premiership club would ever employ any of Pardew, JFK and Harford.

  • 205 bills-son // Jul 21, 2013 at 3:42 PM

    Nufc-eire, good post.

I have been told that Pardew has not been happy at all that Carr has been ignoring the type of playets he is askibg for and keeps recommending his own idea of the players we should sign. Ashley had brought Kinnear in to sort the situation out.

There is no doubting that Carr has found some very good players but your answers to the above questions show that you and I both recognise that the squad is seriously deficient in very important areas.

If we don’t sort it out we run the risk of being rolled over yet again by a good few teams.

  • 206 Rotonda heights // Jul 21, 2013 at 3:44 PM

Sorry just has to be the daftest comment yet.

Our worst players this season have probably been Saylor, Shola and Gosling.

  • 207 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 21, 2013 at 3:44 PM

Bills-son we don’t have any of the above. The squad has 3 center halves that are crap. Willamson, Saylor are lower league quality Colocini, is past his best like his mate Jonas. Obertan and Marveaux, are the worst wingers since Pancrate. Shola is well past it, young Campbell looks like a little kid when he comes on he needs to go out on loan. Cabaye looks like he is joining Cisse on his bike along with Pardew.

I supported you for a long time over Ashley before you got personally abusive which seems to be your default position for anyone with a different view to you.

There’s being ignorant about football but Ashley is now taking it to a whole other level.

  • 219 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 21, 2013 at 3:55 PM

If we sack pardew and replace him with kinnear/halford I can see a mass exodus and relegation
The squad is good enough to assualt the top 8, with a couple of good additions maybe even top 6
But they will go nowhere all the time the club had no direction or ambition, the team can only be as ambitious as the man at the top, seeing as his ambition is to make a quick buck don’t expect the squads to be any different

Bills and Thai -you boys really need to keep up to speed on things Toon related.

  • 223 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 21, 2013 at 3:58 PM

How to invalidate an opinion 101, reduce it to its ludicrous proportions.

I didn’t compare Anita to Yaya, as you well know, I was pointing out that technique is as important for a DM, if not more so, than simply being able to break up play.

I used Yaya Toure as the best example of this, in my mind he’s the best DM in the league, so because Anita isn’t as good as the best DM in the league means he should not be played there?

Anita is excellent on the ball, I understand he’s been working on his physicality so he could be more adept at breaking the play and has creativity and vision. He’s an excellent player, much better than Tiote, he simply needs an opportunity to consistently show this.

I’m not expecting a rational response from you, you’ve shown yourself up today lad, and this time I am being condescending as you’re not worth arguing with.

Ideally we want our signings early as possible to give the maximum time to settle and get used to the team. That’s obvious.

I do think though that as long as the players are in before the season starts, even before the end of the transfer window it’s not a disaster. As long as we have what we need when the window closes I will be happy.

I know Ashley very rarely rushes anything with Newcastle so no point expecting him to now, even if it is best for the football side, it’s might not be best for the financial side which is his main concern in my eyes.

If he fails to bring people in we need, or not enough, then I’ll slate him more. But I will wait til the end of the window before I condemn him.

    2. I saw a similar post the other day about our scout “if a scout can track quality at such a cheap price why has he not yet gone to united or city or Chelsea”

the answer to all them question is no and it prove that our team is just another mid table team
we could look back at the year we lost the chance to win the league because correct me if I am wrong but KK decided to go for an all out aggressive style of play but SAF built the team based around defenders and when we consider the amount of times the team has scored late goal to win games it proves that winning games is done best when you have a good defence.
we just need to thing back to when we had that 13 game unbeaten run in the league the team at the time was set up so the midfield could get forward to create chances knowing that the defenders would remain in the own half.
