The Evening Chronicle is reporting that the deal to bring Mick Harford to Newcastle United has fallen through at the last minute, but that Newcastle will continue to increase the number of folks scouting out talent for the Tyneside club.
Mick Harford – deal called off
There had been some concern yesterday about what Mick would be doing on Tyneside, but news earlier today was that he was going to help Joe ferret out talent, especially in England.
However, it seems that Mick turned down Newcastle at the last moment, and he said this on Sky Sports News:
“After meeting with Mike Ashley and Joe Kinnear, I made the hard decision that it is not the right time for me to take up this role.”
“It was an honor to be asked to work at a fantastic club, and I have the utmost respect for Newcastle United and its fans.”
“I am currently enjoying a role helping out at Millwall, but would like to thank Mike Ashley and Joe Kinnear for the opportunity.”
However, it does look like Joe has been given the go ahead by Mike Ashley to build up his group at Newcastle in the scouting area, and to help him get players through the door.

Comment #7Lets be honest, being the assistant to Joe Kinnear would’ve basically amounted to wiping saliva off of JKs bumbling gob. This job is much more suited to a care worker or failing that a lobotomist. No wonder he turned us down.

Comment #10Jail for Ashley, I’m sure a few minutes search of the web’d identify a slammer that isn’t too good for Ashley.
The Bangkok Hilton comes to mind.- seven star rated it is.

Lesh,
Maybe, but I’m not sure I could put up with the cold weather back in the UK now! I mean, it is a heat wave at the minute for you, and it is only marginally warmer then winter here!
If they want scouts in Africa, then I am available!
Well, hopefully, they can actually advertise, interview and appoint someone who is suitable for the job. Although, it will probably end up being Peter Fear, or Neal Ardley knowing Kinnear! Alternatively get Centre parting back, I’d rather have him doing that role then one of Joe’s other mates!

Jeff, whereabouts in India do you live? I’ve spent a lot of time over there.
Also, it’s venomous, not poisonous. Australia is fine and there are excellent rescue teams all over the country for just that purpose.

Comment #15I wonder whether Harford had an interview and I wonder who with.
As the position was reporting to Kinnear than I would have thought that Kinnear would have conducted the interview. The next person up is Ashley himself, but I can’t see him having the time to do that.
Looks like it’s a good news day today. Perhaps a signing or two is next, who knows.

Comment #20So…despite a negotiation that should have been going on behind closed doors, we have managed to:
1 – leak/make up information that Hartford was joining us as JFK’s assistant
2 – speculate that he’s been recruited to be JFK’s assistant for when he takes over from Pardew
3 – complain about the lack of information from the club regarding the appointment
4 – approve speculations about what his actual role would be, scouting the lower leagues
5 – find out that it’s all a load of rubbish anyway and nothing has been agreed
And some fans wonder why our club is a media circus…

Comment #22I don’t oppose the idea of having a larger scouting network whatsoever ..
It’s just like JFK’s appointment himself, he can’t just come and find jobs for the boys
Some credentials are required .. its the fans money after all isn’t it!?

Comment #25Lil, keep your head down, Joe hasn’t thought of Africa yet. Give him a few months to ease himself into his job and he’ll get round to it.
Although, word has it that Blatter’s feeling a bit shakey now that Joe’s appeared on the world stage!
