Harford Turns Down “Fantastic” Newcastle At Eleventh Hour

11:01 am, Monday, July 22nd, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 62 Comments

The Evening Chronicle is reporting that the deal to bring Mick Harford to Newcastle United has fallen through at the last minute, but that Newcastle will continue to increase the number of folks scouting out talent for the Tyneside club.

mick harford

Mick Harford – deal called off

There had been some concern yesterday about what Mick would be doing on Tyneside, but news earlier today was that he was going to help Joe ferret out talent, especially in England.

However, it seems that Mick turned down Newcastle at the last moment, and he said this on Sky Sports News:

“After meeting with Mike Ashley and Joe Kinnear, I made the hard decision that it is not the right time for me to take up this role.”

“It was an honor to be asked to work at a fantastic club, and I have the utmost respect for Newcastle United and its fans.”

“I am currently enjoying a role helping out at Millwall, but would like to thank Mike Ashley and Joe Kinnear for the opportunity.”

However, it does look like Joe has been given the go ahead by Mike Ashley to build up his group at Newcastle in the scouting area, and to help him get players through the door.

    Jails too good for Ashley.

  • 3 lesh // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:04 AM

A six month contract at a tenner a week just didn’t appeal to him!

    Best new this month!

Lets be honest, being the assistant to Joe Kinnear would’ve basically amounted to wiping saliva off of JKs bumbling gob. This job is much more suited to a care worker or failing that a lobotomist. No wonder he turned us down.

  • 8 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:06 AM

Dear me you couldn’t write this script man.

    And the circus rolls on..

    All very professional isn’t it.

  • 9 Ibizatoon // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:06 AM

Rainrix….To be fair, wiping saliva off of JK’s bumbling gob seems a fitting job for a mackem….

  • 10 lesh // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:07 AM

Jail for Ashley, I’m sure a few minutes search of the web’d identify a slammer that isn’t too good for Ashley.

The Bangkok Hilton comes to mind.- seven star rated it is.

  • 11 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:08 AM

Looks a cheery chap in that photo!

Maybe, but I’m not sure I could put up with the cold weather back in the UK now! I mean, it is a heat wave at the minute for you, and it is only marginally warmer then winter here!

If they want scouts in Africa, then I am available!

Well, hopefully, they can actually advertise, interview and appoint someone who is suitable for the job. Although, it will probably end up being Peter Fear, or Neal Ardley knowing Kinnear! Alternatively get Centre parting back, I’d rather have him doing that role then one of Joe’s other mates!

    lol ibiza

Jeff, whereabouts in India do you live? I’ve spent a lot of time over there.

Also, it’s venomous, not poisonous. Australia is fine and there are excellent rescue teams all over the country for just that purpose.

  • 13 lesh // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:09 AM

Jail….. could wiping saliva off of JK’s bumbling gob be too good for Ashley?

  • 14 richyg01 // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:09 AM

JFK’s first Striker signing falls through then

  • 15 Slank // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:10 AM

I wonder whether Harford had an interview and I wonder who with.

As the position was reporting to Kinnear than I would have thought that Kinnear would have conducted the interview. The next person up is Ashley himself, but I can’t see him having the time to do that.

Looks like it’s a good news day today. Perhaps a signing or two is next, who knows.

  • 16 thai-mag // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:10 AM

joe always thought he was a geordie, somebody has just told him he’s a mackem, even he’s not that stupid

  • 17 rainrix // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:10 AM

Ibiza… Honestly i thought that job would be a bit too high class for a mackem. Changing joe’s diaper however. Niall quinns a frontrunner apparently.

  • 18 Novocastrian66 // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:10 AM

If Joe cannot get his best mate over the line what chance does he have with some of the players were supposed to be after.
Anyway I’m pleased Harford is not coming.

  • 19 richyg01 // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:11 AM

Palace hope to tie up Gosling this week.

    More on Gomis offer.

  • 20 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:11 AM

So…despite a negotiation that should have been going on behind closed doors, we have managed to:
1 – leak/make up information that Hartford was joining us as JFK’s assistant
2 – speculate that he’s been recruited to be JFK’s assistant for when he takes over from Pardew
3 – complain about the lack of information from the club regarding the appointment
4 – approve speculations about what his actual role would be, scouting the lower leagues
5 – find out that it’s all a load of rubbish anyway and nothing has been agreed

And some fans wonder why our club is a media circus…

  • 21 WWYCD // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:11 AM

He rejected us? Haha Christ on a bike JFK can’t even get his best friends to NUFC where’s the hope in him getting players!

  • 22 Moe // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:12 AM

I don’t oppose the idea of having a larger scouting network whatsoever ..

It’s just like JFK’s appointment himself, he can’t just come and find jobs for the boys

Some credentials are required .. its the fans money after all isn’t it!?

  • 23 richyg01 // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:14 AM

This is just more negative press we do not need right now.

  • 24 Slank // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:14 AM

    Lilongwe Geordie

‘..Looks a cheery chap in that photo!’

    Doesn’t he just.

I bet it was taken when he was told he would be playing for Sunderland! I guess we would look like that too.

  • 25 lesh // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:15 AM

Lil, keep your head down, Joe hasn’t thought of Africa yet. Give him a few months to ease himself into his job and he’ll get round to it.

Although, word has it that Blatter’s feeling a bit shakey now that Joe’s appeared on the world stage!

  • 26 magicbus // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:16 AM

Good news at last now get a couple of forwards through the door

  • 27 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:18 AM

  • 28 lesh // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:19 AM

Moe… We’re not Newcastle United any more, we’re becoming known as Friends Reunited!

  • 29 nico // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:19 AM

    JFK……sheer brilliance

  • 30 richyg01 // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:21 AM

I don’t really see why he would want to go from being a coach to an office job anyways.

Just had echos of the Dennis Wise appointment to me.

  • 31 nico // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:21 AM

Wonder which mate JFK will look to bring in next. Actually he probably has none because he’s such a repulsive bloke.

  • 32 stoonley // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:22 AM

Just a confirmation of the kit if anyone needs it:

Seems like Mbabu’s was real! (obviously).

  • 33 nut meg // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:22 AM

We have a list of Ashley’s friends working at the club & now we might be getting Joe’s list of pals.PLEASE,ability comes before cronies !

  • 34 nico // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:22 AM

JFK will you please F_ _ _ Off

  • 35 Wowhatawhopper // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:22 AM

Dedicated reader first time posting! Firstly Jeff you really are a penis, secondly this is the best news as of yet ……….Hopefully get a couple of new faces in sharpish then that will put a smile on my face!!

  • 36 nico // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:24 AM

Why can’t we unlike other clubs, try and appoint staff who are good and have proven that. Everyone knows what eventually happens when you employ your mates. IT DOESN’T WORK.

  • 37 paul24 // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:24 AM

I want football, not f*****g soap opera. This s**t is beyond a joke.

  • 38 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:25 AM

He turned us down as he had to pay his own compensation to Millwall which they demanded upfront in one installment in line with Mashleys policy.

  • 39 Average_Contents // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:26 AM

Straight from the mackems mouth! He actually met with ashley too!

  • 40 FatmanJoe // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:28 AM

He says he is enjoying the role at Millwall but clearly not if he went to meet with them rather than rejecting them outright.

  • 41 JackButler // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:28 AM

Harford not coming is a good thing on one level, but the worry now is who will we turn too?

  • 42 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:28 AM

Sure…because Fergie, Wenger and the rest didn’t hire people that they knew to work with them.

So JFK might have got a trusted contact an interview for a role. Big deal.

  • 43 IITianToon // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:31 AM

When’s the next friendly game? And can anyone tell me what formation we were playing 2nd half with 3 centre halfs on the pitch?

  • 44 jayphoto // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:31 AM

Think they signed Cabaye’s replacement last year in Vurnon Anita! The club expected man utd to come in with a deadline day bid for cabaye that never materialised! Even if cabs does go, in Anita, sissoko, tiote, Bigirimana, vuckic we’ve got 5 central midfielders that will all hope for first team game time this season! We’ve also got Marveaux who is far more adapted for the middle role and for the current time Gosling! Not to mention Connor Newton is supposed to be a top prospect on the brink if the first team and bradden Inman is highly rated (dont think he’ll make it myself like) tbh Cabaye is just as liable to hit 50 yard passes as williamson and simmo were!!he looks decent for france but hes average far more than brilliant for us, thought anita looked a better player when he’d hit his stride in jan

  • 45 Transfer Sage // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:32 AM

    dodged a bullet

maybe a man with more integrity than the two who tried to employ him.

  • 46 brian kilclines pony tail // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:32 AM

he has read the press, twitter and what not, realised that the fans do not want him and if he took the job he would be the first scout to ever get grief from fans so he knocked the job back.
if only JFK could use the internet he would of known this too.

  • 47 JackButler // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:34 AM

Personally don’t care if Kinnear employ’s his brother, sister or next door neighbour as long as they are the right person for the job and thats the worry as Kinnear and Harford cv would suggest that it is simply ‘Job’s for the boys’

  • 48 brian kilclines pony tail // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:34 AM

what am i saying JFK invented the internet according, dean holdsworth seen him do it.

  • 49 jayphoto // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:34 AM

@46 reckon you might be right! Is an assistant scouting job worth the aggro he’d recieve?

  • 50 pawl250 // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:36 AM

Ah and I thought this would be our first signing!

Seems no matter what what Newcastle do these days we cannot even sign backroom staff without an issue lol Not that this is necessarily a bad thing in this scenario!

Come JFK, get someone over the line this week!

Could do with some good news, De Jong and Remy? YES please!

  • 51 nut meg // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:36 AM

So when he’s sacked in a few month’s time from Millwall, Joe will make him another offer. That’s what friends are for at nufc……..isn’t it ?

  • 52 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:36 AM

Wenger had Pat Rice as his number 2, who was there before he arrived. Fergie had 7 assistants. His first, Archie Knox, came with him from Aberdeen. The rest were appointed having worked at Man U under as coaching staff, other than uerioz and McClaren who got their jobs on merits of previous work done elsewhere.

That holds absolutely no comparison to JK recruiting a man who is neither qualified nor experienced for a role.

  • 53 estechco // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:37 AM

How long until the next candidates start to line up…

    ‘…actually met with ashley too!..’

I think Harford wasn’t convinced when they grudgingly and somewhat belatedly insert the word ‘scouting’ into the initial job title ‘domestic role’ offered to him.

  • 55 stoonley // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:38 AM

Perhaps the state of affairs at this club is the reason, but the comments section here has turned very moribund and sour.

I used to think keyboard managers were annoying enough, now everybody’s a keyboard chairman!?

How boring your lives must be.

    Who remembers this?

  • 56 Novocastrian66 // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:38 AM

Hey you never know, maybe Ash has stepped in to stop the deal.

Cos the Mackem wanted the Vauxhall Viva he originally turned up in when he first signed for usall those years ago. Kinnear now turning to Bobby Shinton next

  • 59 BillBurch // Jul 22, 2013 at 1:21 PM

He jumped when he was told the “domestic role” was washing up, cleaning and keeping the front room tidy!

  • 60 sa80teur // Jul 22, 2013 at 1:48 PM

Yet another new signing we were promised hasnt materialised.

  • 61 toonluvva // Jul 22, 2013 at 2:12 PM

Does anyone know what happened to the dutch(?) guy who was Sir Alex Fergusons second in charge who left a couple of weeks ago?

If he was good enough for them, he’d do a good job for us. If he’s still available that is.

Has Kinnear heard of Man Utd though.

  • 62 toonicle // Jul 22, 2013 at 4:07 PM

So 3 weeks into the window we are trying to hire people that will help us find people to hire essentially? Depressing.
