Newcastle Given An Opening For Top French Striker

12:27 pm, Monday, July 22nd, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 337 Comments

There are reports in France that Marseilles are ready to let their striker Andre-Pierre Gignac leave the club this summer, to ease their rather large wage bill.

Andre-Pierre Gignac – doesn’t want to leave Marseilles

It seems that Marseilles want to move Gignac out this summer, and with Newcastle reported to be interested in the player, that may be good news for Newcastle.

But it seems Gignac does not want to leave Marseilles, and he’s already indicated that he’d like to join a bigger club than Newcastle. :(

Gignac is 27 and is coming off a good season with 18 goals in 39 total games for the French club, and he’s also a physical type of player who could do well in the Premier League.

Willie McKay has been asked to look for a club for Gignac, and Willie had this to say to Le Parisien about potential interest in England:

“They’re interested in his profile. With his power, he’s made for the Premier League.”

However his agent Jean-Christophe Cano has made it clear his client does not want to leave Marseilles, and Cano said this in Le Parisien:

“We’ve got a lot of time to think together about what comes next,” “I’ve not mentioned the slightest offer from abroad for Andre-Pierre, because he simply has not envisaged leaving this summer.”

“Finding a better project that OM’s right now is immensely difficult. He’s looking forward to enjoying another great season at Marseilles.”

It seems that Gignac is a long shot for a move to Newcastle United this summer, and probably the main reason for that is he just doesn’t want to come to the Tyneside club – so why bother?

What do you think?

This guy has ambitions above his station, he doesn’t want to come here as we are not a big enough club for him and if you read what the Marseille fans have said about him we need to steer clear

    From last post

So Harford has turned us down (sigh of relief) and now I guess JFK will let another week go by without signing anybody or sorting the sissy situation out, while his search for a person to blame his future mistakes goes on.

    No thanks.

Let him go to his “bigger” club.

A large lumbering buffoon, is how one french journalist described Gignac, i thought he was talking about Head the ball.

  • 6 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:37 PM

    TS

But that’s exactly what the rumours were. He was going to be brought in to scout the lowers leagues. We’d love to have some more young British talent right? You and I don’t know his skills or experience so why do people get negative so quickly!

As far as we know, MA told JFK to do more in the lower leagues while Carr does Western Europe, JFK said he’d like to bring in a guy he knows could help because he knows those leagues really well, and then Hartford was interviewed. If that did happen, as far as we know, we turned him down because he didn’t impress.

If we were ever interested in him then I for one would be gobsmacked.

I seriously doubt that Carr would recommend someone this sh*te.

    Non-starter, move on. Next!

Would steer clear of Gignac! Im not a huge gomis fan but he is a good character and works hard for the team at least! Gingac for me would be buying from ligue 1 for the sake of it! Hes not cheap, hes already on huge wages too (40-50k pw) and there is better british strikers for 10-12m! Id rather Gary Hooper for 5m! Jordan Rhodes, Vydra, would cost less and are i think better players!

  • 20 Ian Toon // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:55 PM

The Ashley years have seen an evolving process for fans of Newcastle United largely because of the poor communication from the club.

We all have our areas of relative expertise but we now have a lot of people who could be expert witnesses on football finance and fair play. Providing an insight, as they see it, of details of the money side of things. So far so good if you can read a balance sheet and understand financial accounting. But there are a growing number of fans who have turned into tactical masters and insist that if only Pardew would listen to them we would be playing CL football. I exaggerate but you get the general idea.

It was blatantly obvious that last season as a team, we were abysmal and whilst it was not solely because we got the tactics wrong it did nevertheless impact and contribute to a poor season.

Tactics are part of a successful team and going into a new season Pardew will have a number of formations that the squad are to train with and use depending on forthcoming opposition. Of equal importance though in any formation/ system is that players give total commitment which was not always the case last season. Very noticeable when Pardew is signalling a closing down game when we don’t have the ball only for it obviously not to be a feature of our play.

Fitness levels do need to improve as do individual player performance. Tactics are only part of winning football matches,
no formation could compensate for poor individual play over such an extensive period. The squad lacked depth to wring the changes and even with a shipload of January signings it took time to bed them in. Tim Krul is a top draw player but he far too often cleared the ball straight to the opposition . This requires individual responsibility which he has had ample time to rectify. And our players failing to find a fellow player with a 5-10 yard pass, no amount of coaching can sort that out. Individual players have to sort it out and spend more time in training working on their distribution. Also working on levels of concentration and disciplined defending. Motivation comes from within.

Much was made of the 4-3-3 system employed in our 5th placed season. It was good to watch and we really opened teams up with it, but we also had players in that formation who were bang on their game. We had Ba up to Xmas scoring for fun and thereafter Papiss Cisse scoring instinctively. HBA individually opening up teams on his own. Cabaye displaying a range of passing not seen by the toon for many seasons and being influential in the best of a very good season.
Fabricio Coloccini being the orchestrata of the defence and behind him Tim Krul showing that he is one of the very best goalkeepers in the PL

All of which leads me to believe that it’s not down to tactics but player performances that win football matches. Pardew claims to have instilled lessons into the squad. Time will tell.

  • 21 JackButler // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:56 PM

    TDS

thats fine with me…i just naturally don’t trust this mob running the club and when anything is mentioned i always presume it’d because its a cheap option and not necessarily the best for the club in footballing terms.

  • 25 Transfer Sage // Jul 22, 2013 at 1:00 PM

    Ian toon

I think players performances are key but if they are set up badly and told they must sit deep, they must invite pressure into our half, they must go long etc etc…tactics are at fault.

But if the basic set up is right, or near enough right it will be the players fault more.

You’re going to have a miserable time supporting this club for a while then mate…

Some good moves this summer so far IMO:
    – appointment of new Performance Director
    – appointment of a DoF with a football background (although I wouldn’t have picked JFK)
    – none of our first team players are kicking up a fuss about leaving
    – only injury concerns I’m aware of are Raylor (out for season) and Krul (will hopefully be ready soon though)
    – confirmed links to several top strikers
    – we’re clearly looking to expand our scouting network to include young British players in the lower leagues

Only negatives as far as I see them:
    – JFK spouting off rubbish
    – Cisse situation still not resolved

  • 31 Hatem's better than Messi // Jul 22, 2013 at 1:07 PM

    TS

    With you on that.
Ashley has no interest in the club. He’s stuck with a business he doesn’t want and can’t sell at a profit.

    Cheap, cheap, cheap everytime.
It might work with strips and shoes but not with footballing clubs where quality and class matter.

  • 32 Rotonda heights // Jul 22, 2013 at 1:07 PM

    Ian

Agreed when Raylor got injured and Obertan was poor, Pardew had little option but to finally give Ben Arfa a game and was forced to accommodate Cisse, Benny and Ba in a fantastic 433 which everyone loved, me especially, it was happy days..

Nobody forced Pardew to change that but at Wigan that season he threw it out into the long grass never to be seen again.

Last season if Ba wouldn’t play left he could have rotated ba and Cisse and kept them fresh for our europa campaign and played marveaux or even Obertan out left in the positon Ba vacated.

This never happened, we ploughed on regardless with ba and cisse in a 442 that was never going to work for club or country. Subsequently Cisse was deployed as a winger and then a target man. Go figure!

Let’s stop adding or recycling striker names – Joe’s got w problem remembering names at the best of times, so maybe we should keep things simple for him.

Joe, forget all other names and just concentrate your attention on getting Gomis signed up.

When you’ve done that, you can go on a nice long holiday. They say Somalia’s nice at this tine of year!

    Negatives would be

    Employing Kinnear (again)
    Trying to employ Harford
    Retaining Pardew
Not adding to our coaching set up
    Not signing anyone
Selling players without first bringing in replacement
    The Wonga sponsorship
Failing to deal with the Cisse situation

    Positives
Bringing Faye Downey to the club

  • 37 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 22, 2013 at 1:12 PM

At the very least we need to sign Gomis, Remy, Alderweireld and Siem De Jong.

  • 38 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 22, 2013 at 1:12 PM

It really gets on my nerves when sites publish things like “Newcastle United have amazingly signed Mick Harford in what can only be seen as an attempt by Joe Kinnear to oust manager Alan Pardew.”

    1 – it wouldn’t be amazing
    2 – he hasn’t signed
3 – there is no way that the “only” way to see it is to get rid of Pardew!

Sites publish trash like that and then some stupid gullible fans come on here and slag off the owners for doing this.

Most of the stuff that MA has been slagged off for isn’t even true!

This is a long running saga I recall between us. HBA has now acknowledged that his biggest concern returning from a bad injury was mental not physical. Pardew nursed him back which was good management.

  • 44 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 22, 2013 at 1:17 PM

    Jack Butler

    I’ll respond to those:
Employing Kinnear (again) – agreed. But a DoF is not a bad move
Trying to employ Harford – why? What do you know about his skills in scouting players in the lower leagues?
Retaining Pardew – disagree. Just as I disagree that he was going to be tapped up by England or Utd when we finished 5th
Not adding to our coaching set up – still time
Not signing anyone – still time. Can’t be a negative yet!
Selling players without first bringing in replacement – we’ve barely sold anyone and we already have cover with youth players and those in January. We currently have 26 players we would need to register, and we’re only allowed 25
The Wonga sponsorship – didn’t happen in Summer. But yes, I don’t like that.
Failing to deal with the Cisse situation – agreed. But there may not be a resolution if Cisse and Wonga dig their heels in. Cisse is most likely contractually obliged to wear the strip and NUFC are most likely contractually obliged for all their players to wear the strip too.

Sure, it should have been sorted out ages ago, but we don’t know the ins and outs. Maybe he was fine with it and then some religious leader told him that he shouldn’t and he changed his mind. We shouldn’t be so quick to leap to conclusions here.

A Director of Football is a position that we need at the club but that position is rendered useless by it being given to Kinnear.

If we are looking at people like Harford to add to our staff then thing’s are going down hill faster than I thought as he has done nothing to warrant a position at this club.

The youth players we have are simply not good enough for the first team other than Biggie so selling Perch who could cover a multitude of positions was stupid.

Retaining Pardew when he turned us into a relegation threatened side and expecting things to change next season is a move of a man that is best suited to selling clothing and not running a football club.

We are employing people on the basis that they are simply glad to be offered a role in top flight football, no one else would touch the like’s of Pardew and Kinnear and yet we offer them an eight year contract and one of the most important and influential roles at any football club.

Any positives that Ashley brings to the club are rendered useless by the people that he employ’s

Many people are not happy with the situation, but I think we help to create the media circus around the club ourselves. Other clubs make controversial decisions but they aren’t as highlighted in the media as with us. We’re such a highly strung bunch of fans that no matter what the club did, there would always be a minority being really vocal about how bad it was.

If we spent £100M on new players there would still be people on this forum saying it’s ridiculous, that MA is gambling on us getting into the CL and if we don’t then we’ll “do a Leeds” and he’ll put us into administration and disappear…

  • 65 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 22, 2013 at 1:32 PM

He does look like Messi in that pic. We could sell Cabaye for £25m and sign Eriksson, Alderweireld and Denswil from Ajax, then sign Gomis, Remy and Mcmanaman for a net spend of £20m.

    Jack Butler

You don’t know how well JFK is going to do yet until he does something. The only thing (positive or negative) that he’s done so far is open his gob too much in the media.

Harford is a proven coach in the lower leagues and could be just the right type of person to assess some of the players in those leagues and recommend some to bring to the club. Not much point in bringing an internationally renowned French scout to scout League Two for us is there?

We barely tried any youth players after January. But we have a few promising ones: Bigi, Campbell, Vuckic, Dummett, Sammy, Fergie, Tav, Haidara.

Moyes nearly got Everton relegated TWICE. And he did alright after that.

“The likes of Pardew and Kinnear”? So you just mean Pardew and Kinnear? I agree that Kinnear is an odd appointment, but Pardew wasn’t an odd appointment for a mid-table/bottom half team that we were at the time. We’re not going to attract a CL level manager at the moment.

Words of inspiration, from a forgotten time. Despite not being that long ago!

NO WAY will Newcastle United win the PL. WHY? Because we do not have the infrastructure to do so. Any player worth having in our team i.e Bale like for Spurs, will move to a top 4 side, reducing the quality of Spurs and increasing the gap between them and the already better teams.

This is the world we live in, the game we love.

I love Bobby, I love his passion. I hated the club and SHEARER for many of his antics leading to Bobby getting sacked in a disgusting manner. People worship Shearer but he never deserved it in comparison to Bobby, someone who has walked away and still loved the club.

Every now and then Shearer likes to open his mouth and spout his professional opinion on the club like he is the fountain of all knowledge when it comes to management!

He is bitter, not that I blame him for that, but he had his chance. He also was paid well for that chance in management, something if it were me given the amount I received over the years, would have gladly done for free. I mean 8 games, chance to fulfill the dream managing the boyhood club.

NO I WANT PAID! with bonuses for keeping us up, if I do……

Yet he is a god!? No sorry, Bobby is the one that people forget about, he is the true legend of Newcastle in the recent years.

  • 121 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 22, 2013 at 2:38 PM

Shearer is the all time top goal scorer for this club. His player power at the time of Bobby’s dismissal contributed but to claim that Shearer doesn’t deserve the hero status he has at our club is wrong.

SBR is the greatest manager we’ve ever had, but Shearer is the greatest striker we’ve ever had.

  • 122 pawl250 // Jul 22, 2013 at 2:44 PM

    Ruddy

Do not dispute his stats, amazing player.

BUT he attitude over his stay with us, it was all big headed power trip syndrome,

We lost wingers, strikers, managers all because of Shearer, and well Bobby for me was 10x the man and hero Shearer will ever be.

He is a legend, but does not act like it.

A true gentleman like Bobby keeps the affairs between the club and himself to himself. Shearer likes to broadcast it, cause problems etc. the margin in quality of being a human being between the two is the size of the grand canyon!

I will forever adore Bobby, his words and contribution.

I appreciated Shearers but simply do not like him as person or his attitude in general thinking he is more than he is, he was a player that was more powerful than the chairman, and he knew it and abused it!

  • 123 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 22, 2013 at 2:47 PM

Think you’re exaggerating to a massive degree. There were far more volatile players than Shearer in our dressing room during his time with us, especially during the Dyer, Robert, Bowyer, Bellamy era.

Strikers like Shearer are once in a generation.

Managers like Bobby are once in a lifetime.

I prefer not to compare their legendary statuses, as they are both worthy of our unwavering reminiscence.

I agree he was not the most troublesome in terms of who was at the club, but really in comparison Shearer abused his power and manipulated fans whenever he was not happy to get what he wanted at the club, whether it was more money, a player to leave, manager sacked ….. list is endless.

He will always be a great player, but never a great man, or not as great as he likes to think he is.

It is arguable that Sir Bobby may have been our greatest manager. He never won any trophies, so perhaps it’s the word ‘greatest’ as opposed to ‘successful’.

IMHO, Joe Harvey was the most successful manager since I first started supporting the club (mid 60′s). He is possibly one of the most successful players ever at the club having won the FA Cup twice as captain.

  • 129 BandB // Jul 22, 2013 at 2:54 PM

No Pawl, not forgotten. Not by me and thousands who were there. And as you say, not so very long ago.
The conditions were in place because the ownership willed it so and the management had talent. Because we did not think of ourselves as only fit to sniff around the scraps of the “big boys” tables.
That we cannot compete with the best is because there is no will to compete. We are no longer a sporting enterprise, but an accounting exercise.
The management doesn’t devote screes of text to explaining or defending this. It doesn’t need to, as it has round-the-clock support from you. Your argument is that we are and never have been a big club. These are southern press talking points. I do not see it as a “positive” view point at all.

Bottom line, would love club to win something but I do not expect it to win anything.

I am realistic, I have no grand illusions of winning the PL anytime soon, because I know how the game is played and abused these days.

Cisse straight swap for De Jong
    Gomis 4 million
Scott Sinclair 4 or 5 million

Leaving the team to look something like this
    Krul
Debs – colo – yanga mbia – Santon
    Sisoko – Cabaye
HBA – De Jong – Sinclair
    Gomis

Surely thats looks a much better attacking force. Then u have Anita, Tioti, Bigi, Marv, Vuckic, Goffy, all sqaud players.
On the bench – Elliot, STaylor, Haidira or Drummet and Steven Mapou.

We can even put Santon father up field as we have to young left backs, But against top 5 teams leave Santon LB.

LOL let me show you something about Spurs

    1. 2012/13 – 5th

    2. 2011/12 – 4th

    3. 2010/11 – 4th

    4. 2008/09 – 8th

    5. 2007/08 – 11th

    6. 2006/07 – 5th

    7. 2005/06 – 5th

    8. 2004/05 – 9th

Its pretty consecutive top 10 apart from 1 year in 8 seasons! They have also been in the PL longer than we have in a row.

    Also net spends

    Present – 17m

    1. -1m (sold Modric for 30m and VDV 10m)

    2. -27m (had the team needed to do it finally)

    3. 17.5m

    4. -1m (sold bent 16.5m)

    5. 19.5m (also includes selling Bebratov for 30m AND Keane for 19m)

    6. 34m

    7. 23m (including selling Carrick for 24m)

That is alot of money, something it has taken 7 years to do ….. and alot of money!

  • 156 pawl250 // Jul 22, 2013 at 3:42 PM

I mean they spent 61m last year, they should be top competing for the top 4 spots!!

Yet they sold their better players to do it! People would have a fit if we sold out better players!

  • 157 toon252 // Jul 22, 2013 at 3:44 PM

Here are some facts for Pawl and his Army…

Pardew in bottom 3 nufc managers since premiership started in terms of win % – Souness, Gullit and Dalglish all have a better win % for us.

Bottom 3, that is a shambles – Only 2 people worse, Kinnear and Sheaer – Shearer only had 8 games, Kinnear about 15!

Another fact – Pardew career win percentage is 35% – Another shocking FACT, wins about 1 in 3 games..

Another FACT – Sacked from 3 clubs, 1 in premiership, 1 in Championship and 1 in League One!

One good season in a career blighted by bad seasons doesn’t make him a good manager, like one bad season in a career full of success doesn’t make someone a bad manager!

  • 158 BandB // Jul 22, 2013 at 3:46 PM

    Yeah, LOL,

Your argument is entirely circular…they are bigger than us therefore they invest more than us, therefore they are bigger than us.

Where have I defended Pardew to the point I am a fan?

I am simply saying give him a chance this season as hes had 2 seasons 1 bad, 1 good.

Wait and see what a 3rd season is like to compare….

As for previous clubs you can list other managers easily who have been sacked or not won this or that.

His winning percentage we actually about 45% before last season, and Keegan the great man he is only has 54%, Bobby 46%

Its minor differences, but last year people still complained about him.

I am just giving him a chance of stability before I get my pitchfork out. Last season was pretty unique in injuries, we will see how it goes this season. Come January expect top 10 places otherwise I will be expecting him to be replaced.

BUT ask yourself this Pardew or Kinnear because that is the ultimate outcome should he leave…. and Kinnear has 22% win ratio! compared to Shearer (same team) at 12% LOL

when we sold carroll in took an eternity to spend that money

  • 162 pawl250 // Jul 22, 2013 at 3:56 PM

BandB we will always be behind,

We spend 20m this season like Swansea, West ham we are arguably in a level playing field with them, yet Manchester who are already in another 2-3 levels above us in terms of quality spend 60-80m every season how can you compete?

It would also be worthy to note Man Utd do not sell any top players to spend that amount normally i.e. Chelsea also and City.

THEN you have Spurs sell 1-2 players, (the model we should attempt) for 30-60m then buy 3-4 players of the same value but level talent just perhaps unproven i.e. Modric, Bale, Vaart etc. and do it for 3-4 seasons in a row….

you will have a potential to take on top 4, but take Bale out Spurs are still an average side…..

Of course it depends how they re invest 60m when they inevitably lose Bale this or next season.

  • 163 pawl250 // Jul 22, 2013 at 4:00 PM

Sage when we sold Carroll it offset a 32m loss the season before!

    We balanced our books.

    We never spent it ever…..

Who did we spend it on? Everyone we buy pretty much until Jan was brought in to replace.

I.e Santon > Enrique, Cabaye > Nolan, all for the same money, it pretty much stayed that way then Virgin Money paid for Cisse.

We are trying but fans are impatient.

Last season was really the only time we spent money in Jan without really receiving for a player leaving.

You begin your argument about Spurs from a point that suits you narrative. The end of the Robson era.
You use one of your premisses (that Spurs have always been more successful than us) to prove your conclusion (that Spurs have always been more successful than us.)
That is logical garbage, and based on a highly selective premiss anyway. Circular.
Spurs have moved on. With shrewd dealing and good management and a will to see themselves as a FOOTBALL club.
Of the years you quote, six have them have been under the auspices of Mike Ashley.
Is this just a coincidence? Or are you arguing that we became systemic also-rans in the intervening couple of years?

You’re off your rocker if you think I care more about balance sheets than I do about the players. It’s you lot who are constantly going on about MA being a tight git, our squad being too thin and we need to but loads of players.

I care about my club continuing to exist and I want it to be in the PL for a long time again, rather than yo-yoing down to the Championship again. I want us to spend money but not beyond that sustainable level. pawl has expanded on my point about Spurs which I have made several times. They have had consistent improvement and growth for about 10 years, yet you somehow expect us to do the same thing in 2 or 3 years???

There is simply no realistic way to make some fans happy because they like being miserable. In the last 20 years, the only times when we were genuine contenders were 3 seasons under KK and 3 seasons under SBR. Out of the other 14 years, probably the 2 seasons I enjoyed the most were our promotion campaign and the season we finished 5th under Pardew.

  • 168 toon252 // Jul 22, 2013 at 4:08 PM

He is still in our Bottom 3 ever managers in premiership – Spin it how you like!

You slag off Keegan/Shearer yet you get on your knees for Pardew..

So what he win percentage was 45% the season before, shall we discount last season!

Shall we discount this remark in his 1st interview since Kinnear took over!

“Last season was hard, Thursday-Sunday, Thursday-Sunday, it killed us, this year will be different, I’m a Saturday, Week-Off to prepare manager, I can make my teams perform well on that regime”

So he is saying that in Europa he’s out of his depth and he can only get teams to perform if they have a week off – We will never progress under Pardew because any progression is used an excuse for any failings he may make in that progression!

  • 170 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 22, 2013 at 4:13 PM

Spurs have not always been more successful than us. I remember working with a keen Spurs fan about 7/8 years ago, at the time we were very similar. Spurs had an awful season and were looking in relegation trouble but Redknapp managed to steady the ship and then they kicked on from there. We could have done the same, but we got relegated instead.

    Why did we get relegated?
    – disjointed, demoralised and overpaid squad
    – KK should never have been hired – pandering to the fans
    – bad appointments of JFK and Shearer

The first point was mainly the fault of the previous regime, Big Sam was fired (and KK hired) because I believe MA wanted to be one of the lads (at the time he was sitting with the fans and having fun), the latter appointments were just plain bad decisions. The problem was that there were no senior people at the club who understood football, so he listened to experienced football people who happened to be his mates too…

    Toon

First I have seen that quote, totally wrong of him to say it, or think it! nevermind say it.

All managers are expected to manage games no matter how quick they are after one another.

I feel Pardews has his last chance year.

Shearer had 8 games, and failed with bemusing tactics at times.

Kinnear was like Keegan past his best (whenever that was) to manage us.

Pardew is our manager deal with it, I never get on my knees for him never have. I will await judgement as my logic suggests he has 1 season to prove which season in the past was a fluke and which was not.

    My opinion.

I remember him saying something very similar to the first bit, but I don’t remember him saying he was a “week off to prepare manager”. That sounds like a ludicrous thing to say when even in the regular season there are often midweek games.

    Glad you approve!

The thing with Spurs is that once they had a run of several top 10 finishes they could consider themselves an establish top 10 side knocking on the doors to the European places, so they would be in a much better place when it came to negotiating contracts for players, staff and sponsors. It also means that they could be a bit more ambitious as the chance of relegation got slimmer every year. We need to be in that position. Frankly, I’m amazed that we managed to get players like Cabaye, Tiote and Cisse to join us when they did.

I dislike Ashley mainly because he has conducted vendettas throughout his career. The latest being his refusal to give his “cry baby” SD shareholders a dividend because they defied him last year.
I think a man of his undoubted success could afford to be a little more gracious and it should be beneath him. Did he not understand that fans are demanding, loud and sometimes unfair? He deals with us like some kind of Norman overlord at times.
But he has brought in some good players, sometimes a little too late. Not everything in black and white land is black and white, and I love it when a post like yours just cuts to the chase.

  • 186 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2013 at 4:50 PM

    TDS,
I’m no fan of Pardew though. I think had we shown sufficient improvement in style after Jan last season then I would have given him more time, but even with the added players the style didn’t change. I didn’t expect miracles from them, it is tough to adapt to a new life and league.

I would have been happier without him at the helm for the coming season, but we have him now, so I find all of the abuse and Pardew out stuff a bit pointless. He is on his last legs now, so he either succeeds, which is great for everyone, or he fails, in which case prepare for lots of I told you so’s from numerous people.

Next season will be good if we cement top 10. But just to do that we need to bring in players. Something which we are seemingly struggling to do. On 2 of the past 3 Mondays we have been told (By Kinnear and Pardew) a signing is expected by the weekend, and those weekends have come and gone.

I am all for having someone in to scout domestically, but from Joe’s own admission he can open doors at all levels of football, Mick Harford is not the best we can get for that role, regardless of his years spent doing very little of note in the lower leagues.

I don’t mind us selling players for big money, but I don’t understand fans calling for players to be sold. Again, I think it’s the Championship Manager mentality.

Clubs don’t progress by actively trying to sell their top players. We need to fight to keep our top players and if they want to go AND a club is willing to pay big money, then they go. Actually wanting to sell a top player in order to fund 2 or 3 inferior (but presumably with potential) players, is not the right message to send out.

  • 188 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 22, 2013 at 5:00 PM

Ashley doesn’t exactly seem like a warm man, he seems like a hard-nosed businessman. It’s sad, because his initial interactions with the fans made out that he wanted to be one of us and I thought that also meant that he would be putting his own money into the club to take us to the next stage. Sadly that all went wrong and he’s gone back to running the club as a business, which I don’t suppose I can blame him for.

As least I think we know where we stand with him now, and I think we should at least trust that he’s not going to grind the club into the ground behind the scenes.

I’m not best pleased with some of Pardew’s tactics, I’m not best pleased with JFK opening his mouth when he shouldn’t and I’m not best pleased with the number of injuries to key players last season, but generally I think we’re in a good place to kick on.

Like you say, it’s never gonna be black and white with the black and whites!

I agree there…if you sell at the drop of the hat it shows the squad that you are a selling club and they have no faith in progressing. Putting up a fight at least lets them think you are trying to push on.

I think out selling policy is spot on actually, can’t fault Ashley on that. My issue is the buying policy…not so much the personel, more the timing of bringing players in and the amount we bring in.

I don’t think anybody would like to see players sold but with six years of the fat man in charge people have come to realise that’s the only way we’ll see players coming in, in an ideal world we’d like our best players kept and the club to spend about 15 to 20M on transfers the 384 th richest man in the world can afford.

I agree that Pardew is in last chance saloon this season, but I think it’s a little unfair to judge him based on the incomings in January. Debuchy, Sissoko, Goofy and MYM played quite a few games last season and it’s not easy for players coming in from a foreign league with limited language skills, and just adapting into a squad.

There’s no SBR waiting in the wings either, so I don’t think the potential instability would be a good thing for the club. Saying that, if we’re drifting and outside the top 10 in December, he needs to go as he’ll have used up his chances.

I don’t see why Harford would have been bad though. He’s well travelled in the lower leagues, JFK obviously thinks he could do a job and why not? Whatever you think of JFK, he’s here now so we have to let him get on with the job, sink or swim. Who better to scout the lower leagues than someone who has played and managed there for a long time?

  • 194 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 22, 2013 at 5:13 PM

If you remember under the previous owners, they regularly left it until the last day as they actually believed that it meant they would get bargains…whereas they ended up overpaying quite often as the selling club knew that we were desperate. Stupid.

I’d have liked us to have a few in by now, but we know MA wants value for money and he’ll be hunting for it. There must be at least a dozen strikers in the world that are about right in terms of ability, value and availability, so I’d rather they take their time to get a good deal on one of those rather than rushing someone of lesser ability over the line.

We signed quite a few in Jan didn’t we?

And why don’t people like you accept that there are very few owners who subsidise their clubs? And they would be in breach of the FFP rules if they did it too much. The £10-15M that we should spend on transfer fees isn’t MA’s money, it’s NUFC’s!

I don’t think he does want Pardew out though, I think that’s a daft conspiracy theory that the media created.

There have also been stories that Pardew ‘only’ gets £500kpa basic salary, yet when it’s convenient the pay-off increases to £13M or something ridiculous. So either it’s £3.5M pay-off or he gets paid more than £500kpa. Besides, I think there must be clauses in his contract. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had to get a top 10 place to guarantee his stay.

It makes sense to have different views on the blog, but the barbs at our staff and ourselves do get a bit overboard at times..

Bugger me. I just typed 4 proper posts in 9 minutes…

  • 198 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2013 at 5:21 PM

    TDS,
There are plenty of people who have played and worked in the lower leagues and been better at it then Mick Harford. How about scouts who have worked the lower leagues, it is there job to do that, rather than employing a man who is a coach/manager to do a role?

I am yet to see any evidence of Kinnear improving the transfer dealings or processes at the club as well. He also made a huge statement that there was no way Cabaye will be leaving. I feel those words could come back to haunt him just like Pards words re Andy Carroll did. I’m not arguing the right or wrong of selling him here.

I said that I just wanted to see an improvement in style, not necessarily results. As I say, it is difficult coming in to a new league, but people who defended Pardew used the fact that he had to pick inferior players, after the incomings, he didn’t. He had a stronger and more technical squad to work with, but style did not improve. It was still overly defensive, and lacked creativity. That is my issue. That is why I don’t see things changing. Improving the coaching set up would maybe have helped, but we haven’t so far.

Results in friendlies are not important, I said this after the win, I will say it now following defeat. But the way we played demonstrated many of the same failings we had the previous season. That, for me, is a big issue. Particularly as Pardew has talked about them, yet still can’t work out how to correct them.

    Lilongwe

I don’t really follow the friendlies at all to be honest. The only positives I really want to take from them is that we have as many players fit as possible and maybe one or two youngsters shone brighter than expected.

I agree with you on the style though and I think Cabaye will have a big input this season, assuming he stays.

We have 2 attacking fullbacks, several dynamic midfielders who can play box to box, a couple of really creative attacking players and a top striker. Add another striker to that mix and another really creative attacking player and we have all the potential in the world to play good football.

I can’t believe that any manager would want to sign Santon and Debuchy and not give them some freedom to make runs down the flanks. That’s what they excel at.

I’d love to see a central midfield trio of Tiote/Anita, Sissoko & Cabaye with Tiote holding, Sissoko being the dynamic box to box midfielder that I believe he is and Cabaye pulling the strings. Then 2 attacking midfidlers/wingers higher up the pitch (our best options now are probably Ben Arfa and Marveaux with Goofy also an option) and then a striker (Cisse) up front. With the option of playing 2 up front, or playing one of our strikers as a wide attacker instead, there should be plenty of attacking options.

Ideally get the player in as earl in the window as possible but like you say if a few extra weeks gets us a better player then that’s for.

I don’t mind taking time during the summer window. My main point about timing of incoming is that instead of doing it this summer he does it in January or next summer. He takes months or Ben years to get players in sometimes…a few extra weeks I can deal with fine.

Hope he doesn’t leave is short again this summer.

  • 207 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2013 at 5:41 PM

    TDS,
Well, that is if he bought/wanted them… :-) Conspiracy theorists on both sides seem to view that the same, and yet still argue about it.

I don’t think we have any natural wide attackers, so I would have the 2 attacking mids playing as support strikers/no.10 type roles. I think Vuckic, if he can stay fit, will excel in that role. I like tiote, and think he gets some unfair flack on here, but for me the starting midfield trio would be Anita Cabs and Sissoko. Three tecnically able players who are all equally comfortable in most roles in that midfield. With game time together they would learn to seamlessly rotate those roles as and when required. Anita is more able to cover the full backs though, who will be required to provide width for the attack, however they to need to learn when it is right to go and when it isn’t. That is Pardew, and the coaching staffs job. I personally don’t feel anyone above the Under 16/17′s coaching staff are any great shakes, and that is a little worrying.

When you say we still lacked style and were still too defensive when the January lads came, as correct as that is, is if fair too put all the blame onto Pardew, initially only 3 started regularly Debuchy, Sissoko and Gouffran, Mbiwa and Haidara getting there chance’s a bit later, but they came into a side with zero confidence so could we realistically expect instant results, and lets not forget that at times we had 3 new lads in the defence and as we all know they have to work as a unit, so could we expect instant understanding to be there with them, yes the initial adrenalin from joining a new club did help but could we really expect an instant solution, now that they have had a pre-season under their belts I would expect a lot more, we should only judge them from now imo.

I totally agree. I don’t want us to be playing catch up again. We should have kicked on after finishing 5th but we didn’t sign the centre back or strengthen in any meaningful way so I don’t want us to screw up again.

We’ve got the best squad that we’ve had since SBR’s days I believe, so now is the time to fill in a few gaps and really establish ourselves towards the top of the PL.

  • 212 Transfer Sage // Jul 22, 2013 at 5:49 PM

    TDS

Yeh exactly. Don’t want to lose ground again.

We have a good squad I feel but we lack forwards. All good. Teams have at least 2 if not 3 very good forwards. We need more goal scoters to make this squad up their with sir bobbys I think

  • 213 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2013 at 5:51 PM

    Spoof,
I know what you are saying, but yes, I think Pardew complained about not having the players prior, and once he had them failed to alter the set up. I appreciate the team were low on confidence, but we took the lead in numerous games, and actually seemed to start like we wanted to go for games. But if we scored early the team retreated deep to defend. There were numerous times Pardew was visible shouting and waving at players to drop deeper. If we conceded early, we would drop deep to prevent further damage as well.

IF it wasn’t Pardew’s plan or intention to defend a 1 goal lead then he should have been screaming at them to push up, yet he was doing the opposite. That with a poor team is understandable, with a team boasting some very good technical players and a wobbly defence is asking for trouble.

One final point, it is generally harder to defend when you are new to the league, so surely it would make more sense to try and attack and be on the front foot?

  • 214 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2013 at 5:54 PM

    Spoof,
Also, I’m not talking about individual performances. I am talking about evidence that Pardew can adapt his style or change. Not results either. Just style and intent.

I’m sure the players will play better this season, it amy even be well enough to mask over some of Pardews faults, but unless the style and intent changes then he won’t have learnt a jot, and it is merely papering over cracks that will eventually be exposed.

  • 218 Spoof // Jul 22, 2013 at 6:08 PM

Pardew does get a lot of stick for his tactics but again I feel a lot of it is unfair, if you look back at when we came 5th with pretty much a settled side where only one or two changes were made were we adopting different tactics depending upon the opposition, Swansea we sat back and let them play until they got into the last 3rd of the pitch and then we were on them like a rash and we then hit them on the break, same with West Brom, whereas Stoke it was the complete opposite, we were in there faces and refused to allow them to settle, Man U due to the absence of Vidic we adopted a long ball game, Liverpool we decided to keep the ball down and play, almost telling them that we were a better side, we didn’t sit back nor close them down, we were just better, so for a manager to get accused of being tactically hopeles when he has adapted his tactics so successfully is rather harsh, last season was too much long ball, but again when you have the Ameobi’s, Perch, Williamson and Obertan’s of this world, what we need to do is ask ourselves if those lads are capable of anything other than long ball, so was it tactics or a lack of ability.

  • 236 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2013 at 6:32 PM

    Spoof,
Long balls is a different debate. For my part, there is a difference between a long ball and a direct pass over 20 yards. In the stats for long balls there is no differentiation. For example, a swept 30 yard cross field ball from Cabaye would be a long ball in the figures. Here are the top 10 “long ball sides” and how many long balls per game.
    1. Newcastle 69
    2. Fulham 66
    3. Everton 64
    4. Norwich 64
    5. Stoke 63
6 – 10. Swansea, Wigan West Ham, Villa, Spurs 62

Swansea and Wigan such fine exponents of technique played only 7 less long balls per match? And played more than Sunderland, Reading and QPR? Utterly meaningless.

It is the setup that was overly defensive, and lacked the opportunity to be creative further forward as we didn’t press higher up the pitch.

As for the previous season, I would argue that Swansea and West Brom dominated those games, not because we allowed them to, but because they kept the ball better We beat Swansea thanks to individual brilliance. However, Pardew did come across a style that worked, Ba out left Cisse central and HBA on the right. So, you have a formation that worked, why change it? because one player wants to? That is weak management in itself, and not what any Premier league team should have.

I ‘m not sure that he did change it to be honest, I feel it was forced upon him due to a lack of ability to his squad, however he can no longer use that as an excuse, as for swapping Ba and Cisse’s role, I totally agree with that, trying it by all means, but when it was obviously not going to work he should have reverted back, that was poor management.
As for the Swansea and West Brom games, I have to disagree, I could see from the first whistle of the game what Pardew was trying to do, and he done it very well, credit were it’s due, same for Stoke and Man U, it was obvious what he was attempting and he succeeded, like him or loath him I think it’s only fair to give credit when it’s deserved.

Have you never seen a bleezer? Like that Viv says, you are a woman!
People used bleezers for the fire and as a means of communication. When Geordie and Wor Lass fell oot, Geordie wrote on the bleezer, in chalk. “Wake me at 8.30am.” When 8.30 came roond, Wor Lass duly wrote on the bleezer, “It’s 8.30am.”

  • 253 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2013 at 6:47 PM

    Spoof,
He can have credit for Man U win and Stoke as I think we went about that spot on. However I will still disagree on the Swansea game in particular. They passed us off the park, and were it not for this painful trend of trying to walk a ball into the goal by passing opponents to death could have comfortably got points.

As for the lack of ability, the players he didhave are better at playing offensively, so to tell them to drop after taking a slender lead will regularly back fire. We will see how he does this year, I’ll be more than happy if he demonstrates he has learnt from his mistakes and gets the team playing this season. Personally, I can’t see it at the minute. Although Joe isn’t making this any easier at the minute.

Ruddy – Dont get all high and mighty – you can’t carry it off. You contacted me and I closed on ” a brief truce” ie it’s over.

It’s certainly not my ambition to aid your attempt to reach and improve on your, daily fall out with posters, rate. Your fast running out of ” next best friend”. Your what the toon army call a plastic football
    fan, great on the theory!

It’s not difficult for me to ignore your contributions and you should please refrain from leaving me waggon wheel welcome messages.
    .

  • 278 G // Jul 22, 2013 at 7:16 PM

Regardless of the frustration for us fans, we have to accept that manyoo et al are throwing megabucks from the prem (the TV deal is well publicized in Europe), and all the euro clubs want a piece of it. I cant say I blame the foreign clubs for not accepting smaller offers for players, when they know we have (comparatively anyway) money to burn.

  • 279 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 22, 2013 at 7:18 PM

    Ian

You really are the plankton of blog life forms.

I’m not a plastic fan, never have been, never will be, but whether you believe that or not is of no consequence to me. As for “carrying off” high and mighty, only someone as arrogant as yourself would think that being able to carry off that demeanour is a good thing.

You do seem incapable of ignoring my contributions, do they grate on you?

I constantly ignore yours because a) they are usually 1000+ words and b) guaranteed to be full of BS.

I don’t need a truce from you, as I rather enjoy jousting with you, stick with it, you might learn something.

  • 280 IITianToon // Jul 22, 2013 at 7:22 PM

Whats saddening is that Bolton fans, who no disrespect, are a fraction of Newcastle fans, can have such a big say on sponsorship deals; and here we are who cant even get to meet the people that run our club.

Is that not more of an indicator of how badly treated by our owner we are, despite the fact or maybe due to the fact, that we are one of the most loyal fan bases in the country.

  • 283 FatmanJoe // Jul 22, 2013 at 7:27 PM

It has been a while since I’ve commented but what’s the beef between Ian and Ruddy?

  • 284 toonicle // Jul 22, 2013 at 7:27 PM

Wickham wouldn’t be a terrible winger, I already said i’d rather have Sinclair. Or get Campbell some starting time out on one of the wings, but I don’t see Pards doing that at all.

  • 285 Spoof // Jul 22, 2013 at 7:28 PM

    Hello Ian,

You and Ruddy would be an interesting conversation if you’d engage in one.
I’d read it… a doubtful loyalist against an uncertain “traitor”.
    How funny these terms are.
I’ve always enjoyed reading your posts. Ruddy’s too.
It’s just “baxath-in” as Joe Frazier would say.
Have you any idea what happened to Sack Lambias?
    He didn’t like me.
    Usually on your account.
Though you and I are chums. Aren’t we?

  • 287 jazzyp // Jul 22, 2013 at 7:31 PM

evening all-ive got a feeling this week this is make or break week for nufc.
the gomis deal should be sorted out this week one way or another. remy I do believe will be given an ultimatum to choose a deal that’s on nufc’s terms this time. gignac personally I hope it doesn’t come to fruition as any player who is constantly spouting that he doesn’t want to come here, should be left well alone.
on a personal note am gutted about siem de jong as this guy is a special talent !!

  • 288 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 22, 2013 at 7:36 PM

Will see you chaps in 2 weeks. Hopefully we’d have signed at least 3 players by then. Alderweireld, Gomis and Remy.

Ian fancies himself as some sort of intellect, and because he thinks that this is what I am trying to be he feels threatened, despite the fact that I only want to have the craic and chat about football.

It’s interesting that since the whole furore over the multiple posters came to a head, that only Ian has survived the purge, yet Pushy, Carl, Sack et all have all but vanished.

We’ll never engage in discussion simply because there is too much bad blood between us.

  • 293 IITianToon // Jul 22, 2013 at 7:41 PM

toonicle I’m sorry but can you give some justification as to why a fast, instinctive and out and out striker like Campbell should be deployed on the wings?

  • 294 toonicle // Jul 22, 2013 at 7:44 PM

IITian- Cause he’s not going to get any starts up front this year and we need someone on the wing. Guti certainly doesn’t cut it.

  • 295 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 22, 2013 at 7:46 PM

    Toonicle

Think we’d be better served signing a winger rather than shoving an untested youngster on the wing. He’d be much better served going out on loan to a lower league club, getting his confidence up, and getting used to scoring on a regular basis don’t you think?

  • 296 BandB // Jul 22, 2013 at 7:47 PM

    Ruddy,

It would be box office. Without any rabbit-punching.
C’mon champ, offer the man out.
    Queensbury rules.
I’m off to hide behind the bouncer, where I can get a good view.

  • 297 toonicle // Jul 22, 2013 at 7:48 PM

Ruddy- Very true but I don’t see us buying a winger. We’ve needed a striker for more than a year and we’re 3 weeks into the window with one official bid so far. I’d love to see us go after Sinclair though.

I’d love to see Sinclair signed, if I could only sign two players this window it would probably be Scott Sinclair and another striker. I’ve yet to decide who that striker may be. Ideally I’d have loved Gameiro, but I think there is word that he will be replacing Negredo at Sevilla. Remy would be a good shout because he’s a striker who can operate on the channels, and I think Abel Hernandez would be a great shout, as a complimentary player to Cisse.

If we don’t strengthen that department we’re royally screwed.

  • 306 toonicle // Jul 22, 2013 at 7:58 PM

Sinclair would be great i’d be over the moon with that signing. Remy i’m kind of cool on, not a huge fan myself especially after he snubbed us in January. don’t get me wrong if he’s the only option i’d snap him up! What ya think about Charlie Austin? I’d think he would be a good buy for 3-4 Mil myself.

  • 307 toonicle // Jul 22, 2013 at 7:59 PM

    Toonicle

What was the fee that Hull had supposedly agreed on for Austin? Didn’t he fail on a dodgy knee? If they turned him down it wouldn’t look too good.

Remy is a talented player, if the price/wages were right I’d be happy for him to come. As for the legal case, he hasn’t even been charged yet. Sinclair would be a cracker though. I’d be happy with Bent if the price was right too.

    Dok

Shane Long is a cracking player, I follow the Irish national side and he is by far the best player on the pitch, think he’d be an amazing signing, we missed out badly when he went to WBA for 6m!

  • 310 AaranD // Jul 22, 2013 at 8:02 PM

Gomis, Remy and Cisse are good striking options as they all provide something a little different. If Cisse leaves then Bent would be a good replacement if Villa lower the fee as he is a proven Prem player. But all that is easier said than done…

It’s also going to be very hard to get a top CB this summer as we can’t offer them 1st team football. Colo and Yanga are our 1st choice and thats how it should even if we do bring in an Alderwield as im a firm believer you need some solid prem experience at the back to calm things down when times are rough. This season our back four will be much more solid.

Pardew probably does deserve another year but if he can’t get the best out of this group of players he has to move on. Many are international standard players and we shouldn’t be scrapping at the bottom with a team like ours.

  • 311 BandB // Jul 22, 2013 at 8:03 PM

    Ruds,

I had a long haul with Pawl this afternoon. Far more time than was justifiable.
I’m just playing now, trying to keep it light by mocking myself.
A man once lifted me far into the air in the Leazes, and held me far longer than was creditable. He put me down and said “did ya see then?”

I started a discussion with pawl and soon realised that it was a road to head-banging frustration and quickly bowed out, I admire your staying power though.

Who knows how many women are on this site, perhaps more than we realise and we’ve made the basic (erroneous) assumption that only men like football, although I’ve yet to actually meet a woman who genuinely loves football, except for exes who have claimed to love it until a few months into the relationship haha so it is refreshing to know you do genuinely love it, and without trying to sound sexist and condescending you’re far more knowledgeable on the subject than a good many men.

No, mate, he currently plays for WBA he signed 2 seasons ago and we were linked with him then, so I think we should have signed him then, that’s what I was referring to.

If we were to go back in for him, I’d agree with you that he’s a great player, I’m not sure how much it’d cost to get him in though.

You’re right, he’s in the last year of his contract, we could get him in on the cheap, would be a great signing if we managed it, but with Lukaku back to Chelsea he might get more playing time.

  • 331 BandB // Jul 22, 2013 at 8:24 PM

    Ruddy,

I got engaged in the Strawberry “garden” before a match (which we lost…and I don’t even recall which one it was ….87/88).
It seemed dead cool. My dad thought it was the most romantic thing that had ever happened.
We taught our kids two things. “Always ask why”. and “support the Toon.”
It was the remaining passion that linked us together, as a family.
We chucked that in this summer. End of an era.
But if it puts a few extra quid in Mike’s fat, bulging, arrested development pockets, who are we to argue?

  • 332 DokToon // Jul 22, 2013 at 8:27 PM

It’s sad that even the most ardently die hard fans, the fans who on a weekly basis still soldiered on to SJP and to further afield, have said “enough is enough”

I don’t think Mike Ashley appreciates that he has forced many fans to the end of their tether regards his ownership.

Hopefully his pocket will be hit badly this season and he either a) changes his approach or b) decided it’s time to move on.

    We live in hope eh?

  • 336 jimiley // Jul 22, 2013 at 8:45 PM

We have to keep the faith in Big Mike and Joe K ably supported by Alan Parsnip. They came 5th bottom last season and probably think they do not need to sign anybody. No Europe games means we should come about 10th. These boys know what they are doing. Where is all the extra SKY money (50 million) and gate receipts going? Come on Percy, just one signing please, even if its only Darren Bent. He could propel us to a top 6 finish. I think we might win something soon. The club is on firm foundations, is well led and managed, it exploits commercial opportunities eg games on the outer Hebrides (what on earth are the big boys doing in China and America?) and with a litle more luck we could challenge for Champions League.
