Newcastle Lodge Bid For Gomis – But Marseilles Enter Race

9:10 am, Monday, July 22nd, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 54 Comments

Newcastle United have reportedly put in a formal bid for Bafetimbi Gomis of Lton, but there is also news that Marseilles have become interested in the 27 year-old striker, who was a serious target when Kevin Keegan was at the club in 2008.

Bafetimbi Gomis – Newcastle put in bid

With Gomis starting the last year of his five-year contract at the club, Newcastle are looking for a good deal on the French International striker, but that’s always true with Newcastle these days.

The news in the Evening Chronicle today is that Joe Kinnear has lodged a formal bid for the striker,  after due consultations with both manager Alan Pardew and owner Mike Ashley.

So we hope it’s a decent bid and that it will be accepted by Lyon, because when you delay moving for a player who is available and is a target at Newcastle, invariably other clubs move in, and that seems to be what Marseilles have done.

A fee has to be agreed before Newcastle can move to the next step,  and talk to Gomis and his representatives about personal terms, and once terms are agreed, the next step is the medical.

The fee that’s being reported for Gomis is around £7M and even higher, but we’d be surprised if Newcastle have bid anywhere near that figure, and if we were to hazard a guess we’d say the (initial) bid is around £4M, for a player who will become a free agent next July.

But Newcastle fans are getting decidedly restless at the moment,  that our striker department is so bare, with Ameobi injured on Saturday, and it looks at the moment that Newcastle’s number 9 Papiss Cisse will be leaving the club, and if that happens that will be a severe blow to Newcastle.

We are hoping that Joe Kinnear can deliver the goods this week and get Gomis through the door, and sooner rather than later.

And for Joe to become more accepted on Tyneside, he has to start bringing in some top players for Newcastle United, that’s his job.

Comments welcome.

Part of me thinks the lack of investment and shocking cheap staffing appointments is clearing the decks for a sale, before grim reality sets back in.

Carlos slim, Ambani, the Russian guy, the sultan of Brunei, anybody???

Trouble is there will still be 52000 in SJP so nothing will change.

  • 3 JFK junior // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:14 AM

£7mil is too much for him.

  • 4 sweendog // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:15 AM

worrying bit is that their are rumours Marseille is his preferred destination .. I think he’s a very good player

  • 5 rainrix // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:15 AM

Joe Kinnear delivering the goods? Ha!

Joe’s a lot like a dull pain in the testicles, annoying and worrying.

  • 6 sweendog // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:15 AM

7 mill is not alot for an international player though .. and a good one at that .. depends on wages ..

  • 7 Laurent Robert 32 // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:15 AM

Better learn how to control a ball once it’s smashed up to him, then be prepared for nobody round him supporting him. No overlapping for him, little movement.

Off the cuff football. Good work, Pardew. NOT.

  • 8 RonVanDam // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:15 AM

3m should be enought to tempt his club. Otherwise we will gomis another striker

  • 9 Magpie from Lithuania // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:16 AM

Hope Gomis and Cardozo, or Gomis and Giganac (Giganac is not so keen to join us tho) come to srtenghten the attack. Cisse is likely to leave.. So maybe Remy is still an option..

  • 10 Hatem's better than Messi // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:16 AM

Average striker in a very average league … not much quality left in France after years of raiding.

  • 11 Toonarmlee // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:17 AM

Ed can we do a poll on who’s cancelled season ticket?

  • 12 JFK junior // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:20 AM

Sweendog – He isn’t a regular in the French national side, and he is in the last year of his contract.

I think he is a good player, but not at £7mil.

Also cardozo has gone to Turkey I believe. I don’t actually think we were even in for him. Just paper talk.

  • 13 rossi // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:20 AM

why have we not made a bid for remy!!!

  • 14 Hatem's better than Messi // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:22 AM

Because he’s been charged with rape?

  • 15 WWYCD // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:24 AM

Sounds a good striker from what I’ve read don’t have much further knowledge on him tbh

I read that young Portuguese striker Oliveira? Or something was being courted by Cardiff for a fairly low value was highly rated not so long ago, has he fallen dramatically or is he worth out interest?

  • 16 lesh // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:24 AM

So we’ve lodged a bid and we’ve yet to talk to the player or his reps?

So, any apart from building his empire, what exactly has Kinnear done or been doing over the last few weeks?

    Has Ashley asked the questions?

  • 17 BandB // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:26 AM

If Joe Kinnear intends to sally out of his hut at Benton to oversee Pardew’s training sessions, maybe he’d be more comfortable with a large assistant by his side?

  • 18 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:27 AM

I would love for Mike to sell up but I don’t really want to be another Chelsea or Citeh!

British football is a sad state of affairs!

I would love for the supporter’s trust to buy 50% of the shares and someone with interest in both football and NUFC to buy up the rest (as long as he got the money to back it up)

I fear Mike would want way too much money to sell up; but we could always force his hand. It has been done twise before but he could not find a buyer.

  • 21 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:27 AM

    Lesh,
Of course I’m questioning Kinnear’s appointment! That is why I said “once again” I am questioning the credentials and suitability.

I think you could level that at almost every single appointment on the football side by Ashley.

  • 23 Transfer Sage // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:28 AM

should wait until there is a definite decision in the proceddings

  • 24 Schwefelberg // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:29 AM

We’ll never sign anyone with Joe doing heavy breathing on the phone to France. He does the negotiations now???

Come back Dirk Llambias all is forgiven!

  • 25 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:29 AM

We could be in for Moussa Sow. I’m sure he’ll be a target.

  • 26 lesh // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:30 AM

  • 27 Transfer Sage // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:30 AM

I kind of agree. I dont want to be a chelsea or city…its got to the point with them where if they dont win every game people go home unhappy.

It must be boring where winning is expected, good for a while but must get sick.

although it would be nice to see the worlds best players at the club.

  • 28 lesh // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:33 AM

You fancy giving boredom where winning is expected a try? I would.

TS…I would really just like to be run like any decent German club where us fans matter the most!

…is that too much to ask for? :-D

  • 32 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:35 AM

    call me cynical
Do the toon put it about – show an interest in a player, put in a bid to alert other teams to sign him cos they did not really want the player in the first place but keep the fans happy – look who we are after blah blah blah.
It has happened with Pea now looks like Gomis, Remy and Bent that other clubs are now in

  • 33 thai-mag // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:35 AM

harfords task is to find players from the lower leagues, that will be handy because that’s where we are heading, who says ashley doesn’t plan ahead

  • 34 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:35 AM

    WWYCD,
Cardiff are after Nelson Oliveira?? If that is true that is interesting… He is by no means a prolific goalscorer or even a goalscorer to be honest (something like 20 goals in over 100 appearances), and probably never will be, but he is a very talented player. I think he would be more of a second striker, or a game changer from the bench. He has always been used as more of a sub, but was meant to be interesting some big clubs just over a year ago.

Any price being mentioned? I’d say worth it as a sub striker or to play just off a strong and quick striker, but 4/5million tops.

  • 35 rossi // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:37 AM

is kinnear recruiting his backroom staff in readiness for when pardew goes

  • 36 Schwefelberg // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:38 AM

So if Cab is sold for £20m then £5 of that is used to pay off Pardew by October, then Ashley keeps £10m for himself …that leaves £5 for a striker which is about where we stand.

  • 37 Perchinho Pricing Blunder // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:39 AM

Jesp lemon. I would love US to be a fans first club but we all know we’re run by a cash first guy.
besides German fans have more tempered and realistic expectations.

  • 38 Macas // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:40 AM

Lilongwe Geordie – Thanks, it’s just I know there are plenty on the blog who criticize without any reason or facts. It’s possible he may have more ability than his job duties suggest, here’s hoping anyway.

  • 39 geordiemark // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:40 AM

I think 99% of the fans are now fed up with ashley and he knows it, I think if people stay away from sjp in there thousands then it will force ashley to sell up and maybe at a reduced price

if we start the season really bad then I expect all the fans to give ashley and co a lot of stick which will be richly deserved in my eyes this in turn will make ashley sell up a lot quicker, if hardford is appointed as people think he will be then this will give pardew a lot of problems which will cause trouble with the players and really its not the players fault but the owner and his cronies all in all will cause the toon army to cause no end of shit for ashley and co

I would like to know the reasons why we havent signed players when every club in the league have done except arsenal come on ashley spend money or theres a lot of trouble coming really soon

    Charlie @37
Every close season for 57 years of my life I’ve read the same crap about tracking this player or monitoring that player & guess what ? I still want to believe it …….how sad is that?

  • 43 WWYCD // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:42 AM

    Lil
No idea on price it was just a piece I saw from some paper on twitter mentioned some club (PL but not a big club) trying to snatch him away from Cardiff who were apparently getting quite close to him
I seem to recall him playing for the national team a few times and he looked tidy

No idea how true it was though. He’s only 21 though so 20 in 100 mostly from the bench maybe isn’t as bad as it looks?

  • 44 Schwefelberg // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:42 AM

it would be better than what we do now, so would be welcomed. i’d enjoy it i think.

    jesper

no sure if it would work in england, not sure of how it all exactly works in germany other than fans own 51%…surely fans of bayern munich cant be financing there massive spending every year so the other owner must be good to them.

I would like a system introduced where fans have some say in who is on the board at a club, not so much a direct control over footballing personel but be able to make higher up accountable.

  • 49 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:50 AM

    Macas,
No worries, I’d rather we promoted Liam Bramley from the U16′s to oversee that stage personally, as he is the best coach at the club. That or bring in someone like Paul Clement (Ancelotti’s former assistant at PSG) or Gary White (highly qualified English coach, currently coaching the Guam national team and moving them rapidly up FIFA rankings) to do the role.

    WWYCD,
Yeah, just checked on his stats, he has 20 in 126, but it works out as a goal every 288 minutes played. That isn’t terrible for a 21 year old who has been mainly used from the bench.

It is Stoke and Cardiff bidding, a £1million loan fee for the year with a £6million option to buy if he is a success. I’d go for that if I was the club, gives us the option and allows a loan for Campbell without the problems if he flops. Win Win

  • 50 toon kk // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:52 AM

Ive come to the stage I don’t care what they do, it doesn’t matter what we think is best for the club MA will do things his way.

  • 51 WWYCD // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:53 AM

    Lil
I’d go for that rotation/second striker young potential and could become a regular in the Portuguese team (they have very few strikers) so worth more in a few years

But he’s not French rules him out haha

  • 52 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:55 AM

TS…I don’t think the german supporters fund anything other than what they for tickets and so on.

I think German clubs are very good at generating funds through revenue, sponsor and merchingdice.

Remember Dortmund have a stadium with a capacity of 80.000 and a very big fan base both locally and globally. That goes for Bayern as well.

I think fans are the most important factor in football. Without them there really was no point in it all.

I would love for the Newcastle supporter’s trust to play a big part in the new Newcastle, but not the only part (there need to be someone with the money and the vision leading the way)

  • 53 Jackson1989 // Jul 22, 2013 at 9:55 AM

Am i the only one who thinks a 4312 or Krul Debuchey, Mwbia Colo santon, cabaye tiote, sissoko, ben arfa gomis and cisse/remy would work a treat? if we need to attack we push wingbacks forward, if we need to sit back we have cabaye sissoko and tiote sitting infront of back four until, and we out squad lacking wingers and natural crossers its the only formation tht seems we will with our thin squad
