Newcastle United have reportedly put in a formal bid for Bafetimbi Gomis of Lton, but there is also news that Marseilles have become interested in the 27 year-old striker, who was a serious target when Kevin Keegan was at the club in 2008.
Bafetimbi Gomis – Newcastle put in bid
With Gomis starting the last year of his five-year contract at the club, Newcastle are looking for a good deal on the French International striker, but that’s always true with Newcastle these days.
The news in the Evening Chronicle today is that Joe Kinnear has lodged a formal bid for the striker, after due consultations with both manager Alan Pardew and owner Mike Ashley.
So we hope it’s a decent bid and that it will be accepted by Lyon, because when you delay moving for a player who is available and is a target at Newcastle, invariably other clubs move in, and that seems to be what Marseilles have done.
A fee has to be agreed before Newcastle can move to the next step, and talk to Gomis and his representatives about personal terms, and once terms are agreed, the next step is the medical.
The fee that’s being reported for Gomis is around £7M and even higher, but we’d be surprised if Newcastle have bid anywhere near that figure, and if we were to hazard a guess we’d say the (initial) bid is around £4M, for a player who will become a free agent next July.
But Newcastle fans are getting decidedly restless at the moment, that our striker department is so bare, with Ameobi injured on Saturday, and it looks at the moment that Newcastle’s number 9 Papiss Cisse will be leaving the club, and if that happens that will be a severe blow to Newcastle.
We are hoping that Joe Kinnear can deliver the goods this week and get Gomis through the door, and sooner rather than later.
And for Joe to become more accepted on Tyneside, he has to start bringing in some top players for Newcastle United, that’s his job.

Comment #7Better learn how to control a ball once it’s smashed up to him, then be prepared for nobody round him supporting him. No overlapping for him, little movement.
Off the cuff football. Good work, Pardew. NOT.

Comment #9Hope Gomis and Cardozo, or Gomis and Giganac (Giganac is not so keen to join us tho) come to srtenghten the attack. Cisse is likely to leave.. So maybe Remy is still an option..

Comment #12Sweendog – He isn’t a regular in the French national side, and he is in the last year of his contract.
I think he is a good player, but not at £7mil.
Also cardozo has gone to Turkey I believe. I don’t actually think we were even in for him. Just paper talk.

Comment #15Sounds a good striker from what I’ve read don’t have much further knowledge on him tbh
I read that young Portuguese striker Oliveira? Or something was being courted by Cardiff for a fairly low value was highly rated not so long ago, has he fallen dramatically or is he worth out interest?

Comment #16So we’ve lodged a bid and we’ve yet to talk to the player or his reps?
So, any apart from building his empire, what exactly has Kinnear done or been doing over the last few weeks?
Has Ashley asked the questions?

Comment #17If Joe Kinnear intends to sally out of his hut at Benton to oversee Pardew’s training sessions, maybe he’d be more comfortable with a large assistant by his side?

Comment #18I would love for Mike to sell up but I don’t really want to be another Chelsea or Citeh!
British football is a sad state of affairs!
I would love for the supporter’s trust to buy 50% of the shares and someone with interest in both football and NUFC to buy up the rest (as long as he got the money to back it up)
I fear Mike would want way too much money to sell up; but we could always force his hand. It has been done twise before but he could not find a buyer.

Of course I’m questioning Kinnear’s appointment! That is why I said “once again” I am questioning the credentials and suitability.
I think you could level that at almost every single appointment on the football side by Ashley.

I kind of agree. I dont want to be a chelsea or city…its got to the point with them where if they dont win every game people go home unhappy.
It must be boring where winning is expected, good for a while but must get sick.
although it would be nice to see the worlds best players at the club.

Do the toon put it about – show an interest in a player, put in a bid to alert other teams to sign him cos they did not really want the player in the first place but keep the fans happy – look who we are after blah blah blah.
It has happened with Pea now looks like Gomis, Remy and Bent that other clubs are now in

Cardiff are after Nelson Oliveira?? If that is true that is interesting… He is by no means a prolific goalscorer or even a goalscorer to be honest (something like 20 goals in over 100 appearances), and probably never will be, but he is a very talented player. I think he would be more of a second striker, or a game changer from the bench. He has always been used as more of a sub, but was meant to be interesting some big clubs just over a year ago.
Any price being mentioned? I’d say worth it as a sub striker or to play just off a strong and quick striker, but 4/5million tops.

Comment #36So if Cab is sold for £20m then £5 of that is used to pay off Pardew by October, then Ashley keeps £10m for himself …that leaves £5 for a striker which is about where we stand.

Comment #39I think 99% of the fans are now fed up with ashley and he knows it, I think if people stay away from sjp in there thousands then it will force ashley to sell up and maybe at a reduced price
if we start the season really bad then I expect all the fans to give ashley and co a lot of stick which will be richly deserved in my eyes this in turn will make ashley sell up a lot quicker, if hardford is appointed as people think he will be then this will give pardew a lot of problems which will cause trouble with the players and really its not the players fault but the owner and his cronies all in all will cause the toon army to cause no end of shit for ashley and co
I would like to know the reasons why we havent signed players when every club in the league have done except arsenal come on ashley spend money or theres a lot of trouble coming really soon
