Pardew – Kinnear Has Set Up Some Important Meetings

11:35 am, Monday, July 22nd, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 67 Comments

It would be just great if Newcastle’s Director of Football Joe Kinnear can bring a couple of good strikers through the door at Newcastle in the next week or two (or sooner).

alan pardew smiling - press conference

Alan Pardew – Joe has set up some important meetings

And Alan Pardew, when interviewed today in Portugal by the local press, Alan revealed Joe had set up some important meetings.

This is what Alan Pardew said today:

“I’m focusing on the team out here, and Joe, Lee Charnley and Graham Carr, our chief scout are looking to get someone over the line.”

“At the minute, especially if Shola’s missing, and with no Papiss out here, we’re a little bit light for a Premier League team.” “I spoke to Joe on Friday, and he has some important meetings.”

We assume Kinnear is working hard to bring in new players, and Alan had said last Wednesday when he left with the 23 man squad for Portugal,  that he had hoped to have a new player through the door when the lads come back on Wednesday.

Newcastle will play their second game of the tour tomorrow night against Pacos de Ferreira at the Estadio da Capital do Movel,  and the game kicks off at 8:00 pm.

Pacos de Ferreira finished in third place in the Primeira League last season on 54 points, three places and 12 points ahead of Rio Ave,  and they qualified for the play-off round of the Champions League.

So it looks like they are a good side and will present Newcastle with another severe test.

We are hoping that Coloccini, Ben Arfa and Mathieu Debuchy will be fit enough to be in the starting lineup tomorrow night.

Comments welcome.

    ‘…actually met with ashley too!..’

I think Harford wasn’t convinced when they grudgingly and somewhat belatedly insert the word ‘scouting’ into the initial job title ‘domestic role’ offered to him.

  • 3 JackButler // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:39 AM

Even with Shola and Cisse we are very light

  • 4 Belfast // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:40 AM

Cisse the devout muslim wouldn’t gamble would he ??

  • 5 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:40 AM

Wenger had Pat Rice as his number 2, who was there before he arrived. Fergie had 7 assistants. His first, Archie Knox, came with him from Aberdeen. The rest were appointed having worked at Man U under as coaching staff, other than Querioz and McClaren who got their jobs on merits of previous work done elsewhere. For completeness (forgotten on previous post) Walter Smith was their a few months but his credentials are there for all to see!

That holds absolutely no comparison to JK recruiting a man who is neither qualified nor experienced for a role.

If it indeed IS him! Not entirely clear.

But if proven, should put this “religious reason” stories to bed.

‘….Shola’s missing, and with no Papiss out here, we’re a little bit light..’

    Lovely sangfroid, wonderful.

No doubt Pardew is currently sticking pins into a doll that has more than a passing resemblance to the Director of Football.

  • 10 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:45 AM

So Fergie brought his assistant from Aberdeen you say…Wenger did appoint people he knew but he wanted his assistant to be an Arsenal man. Eriksson brought Tord Grip with him everywhere and a bunch of Italian coaches too, so did the Italian for Ireland. Pretty much every manager looks to hire the best people he knows for the job.

You have no idea what Hartford has been doing recently, he may be massively sought after or maybe he’s got some talents that haven’t even been properly utilised yet. It’s not as if he’s coming in as manager is it?

And then it falls through…so what really happened is the he may have got an interview, it was stupidly leaked somehow, and the fans have made crazy speculation ever since.

We’re always going to be a media circus when our fans overreact. Who cares who JFK brings in to help him out, as long as we have signed a couple of good players come 1st September.

Isn’t he shacked up with Miss Newcastle too?

  • 22 Ben3arfa // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:51 AM

Bernard is one hell of a player, may be too light for EPL though

  • 23 jayphoto // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:52 AM

Think the thing with Cisse is more to do with how the muslim conmunity and the Senegalese people will react to him wearing the Wonga shirt! Not sure its actually his ethics that are being questioned, i think its more to do with the ethics of his family and the place in senegal that he comes from

  • 24 Belfast // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:55 AM

I said the other day he’s had his agent in his ear telling him how much he could earn in Russia, but Ashley and co value him at 25 million or whatever it is, and the Russian club don’t want to pay it.

Handy we way of forcing a move at a knock down price in my opinion.

  • 25 jayphoto // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:55 AM

That Bernard at arsenal has come from L’equipe so im not sure id believe it! Their about as reliable as the metro or the sun!
Talk about Bernard was that he wanted to wait till after the world cup in 2014 to move because a bad year trying to adapt to a new league would lose him his squad place for Brazil as their are numerous players breathing down his neck for his place and under Scolari playing in brazil gives him the best chance of getting a place

  • 26 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:56 AM

Appointing coaches to work with you as coaches makes sense. Appointing coaches/players who played and coached for you as an assistant to a Director of football, and in a potential scouting capacity is different. If I worked as a barman when a student would I then appoint my fellow bar staff to work with me when I am at an accounting firm?

What has Mick Harford ever done? Has he coached, or managed at the top level? Has he coached or managed international level players? He was obviously so in demand that he joined Millwall’s coaching staff earlier this year….

As for your point about the media circus, there hasn’t really been one. There was a story in the press, that has turned out to be correct in that he was offered the role. Harford has turned it down. Kindly point out which part constitutes a circus?

  • 27 WWYCD // Jul 22, 2013 at 11:56 AM

  • 31 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:02 PM

Let’s not write this Harford piece off just yet. He initially turned down Kinnears advances at Notts Forest, before joining a few months later.

In answer to what he has been doing, QPR, Colchester, Luton, Swindon, Rotherham, QPR. Oh yes, high quality.

To be honest, the fact he isn’t coming is by the by, it is more the fact that the club wanted him to join in that role that is worrying.

  • 32 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:03 PM

    (he was at QPR twice)

  • 33 Moe // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:03 PM

  • 35 jayphoto // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:06 PM

Thing is with the cisse wearing a virgin money shirt too is that its justifiable in that they do offer no interest and no APR accounts and loans for Muslims aswell as their regular accounts and loans! Same as most big banks! So cisse could look as if the club was advertising those! Obviously Wonga do not! Just guessing but i think the town in senegal is what cisse cares most about, sends a massive percentage of his wages back there, i think its his image there that he wants to preserve

  • 36 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:07 PM

A good manager always tries to hire the best people he knows for the job.

Now in Joe’s case and given his extensive contacts, Harford ‘ll be it!

Maybe we could get the position advertised abroad and outsource it?

  • 48 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:19 PM

But the rumours were that his role was to be scouting the lower leagues. So experience of the lower leagues is vital!

As for your example, you’re miles off. It’s a bit more like having a trusted assistant bar manager when you ran a bar and then hiring him as to work with you when you open up a restaurant.

Our club is a media circus be because the slightest article get pounced upon as fact.

This shouldn’t have been made public unless he was appointed. In what other club are there several articles about a junior staff member who had an interview?

  • 49 Transfer Sage // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:20 PM

I wouldn’t mind being in a Job earning 4 grand or whatever a week just to take shut from some supporters that I didn’t care about about not making a signings, Mike Ashley has employed kinnear to take the heat off pardew and also take the heat for not doing nothing in the transfer market 1 striker and a load of league 1 championship players aswell wannabe bargains

  • 53 plana // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:21 PM

  • 54 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:22 PM

Honestly we signed the contract with Wonga more than half a year ago; surely the Cisse problem should have been raised of concluded then.

Why are we at this now in pre-season? What a bunch of amateurs!

Let him play without a sponsor (so what! Wonga will benifit from it in the ens cause it will refflect good on them)

  • 55 Transfer Sage // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:23 PM

its important to get somebody in with lower league contacts if his job is to scout the lower league. As a coach i imagine he must have an eye for a player and be able to identify strengths/weaknesses and be able to determine if he believes they can improve.

If that was what he was doing i wouldn’t have a problem. But i dont know how well connected or good he is at coaching/spotting talent.

  • 56 Jail for Ashley // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:24 PM

No need for me to mention conspiracy theories as we have direct quotes from Virgin saying they weren’t even offered to match Wongas deal, either some underhand goings on or Mashley deliberately wanted to wind us up with the name.

  • 57 Transfer Sage // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:28 PM

You would have though cisse would have raised the issue early…maybe he didn’t though. Footballers aren’t renowned for being bright and making though out decisions.

I agree too that it would make more sense for wonga to let him wear a plain shirt on religious grounds. It reflects good on them, they get a lot of bad press and this would show a little bit of class but alas they are showing just how classless they really are…a company devoid of any morals.

  • 58 plana // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:28 PM

Jfa, you moron, do you honestly think Ashley, gives a toss what you think? Yeah i think i will wind up the fans. Behave you clown.

  • 59 JackButler // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:28 PM

I’d be far more surprised if the club had dealt with this Cisse issue months ago as it’s not how we do things, everything has to be blown up and made into a massive press story before we do anything about it.

Mike Ashley still hasn’t figured out the differences between running a retail company and a football club

  • 60 Goodfella // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:31 PM

So Harford has turned us down (sigh of relief) and now I guess JFK will let another week go by without signing anybody or sorting the sissy 😉 situation out, while his search for a person to blame his future mistakes goes on.

  • 61 Ian Toon // Jul 22, 2013 at 12:52 PM

The Ashley years have seen an evolving process for fans of Newcastle United largely because of the poor communication from the club.

We all have our areas of relative expertise but we now have a lot of people who could be expert witnesses on football finance and fair play. Providing an insight, as they see it, of details of the money side of things. So far so good if you can read a balance sheet and understand financial accounting. But there are a growing number of fans who have turned into tactical masters and insist that if only Pardew would listen to them we would be playing CL football. I exaggerate but you get the general idea.

It was blatantly obvious that last season as a team, we were abysmal and whilst it was not solely because we got the tactics wrong it did nevertheless impact and contribute to a poor season.

Tactics are part of a successful team and going into a new season Pardew will have a number of formations that the squad are to train with and use depending on forthcoming opposition. Of equal importance though in any formation/ system is that players give total commitment which was not always the case last season. Very noticeable when Pardew is signalling a closing down game when we don’t have the ball only for it obviously not to be a feature of our play.

Fitness levels do need to improve as do individual player performance. Tactics are only part of winning football matches,
no formation could compensate for poor individual play over such an extensive period. The squad lacked depth to wring the changes and even with a shipload of January signings it took time to bed them in. Tim Krul is a top draw player but he far too often cleared the ball straight to the opposition . This requires individual responsibility which he has had ample time to rectify. And our players failing to find a fellow player with a 5-10 yard pass, no amount of coaching can sort that out. Individual players have to sort it out and spend more time in training working on their distribution. Also working on levels of concentration and disciplined defending. Motivation comes from within.

Much was made of the 4-3-3 system employed in our 5th placed season. It was good to watch and we really opened teams up with it, but we also had players in that formation who were bang on their game. We had Ba up to Xmas scoring for fun and thereafter Papiss Cisse scoring instinctively. HBA individually opening up teams on his own. Cabaye displaying a range of passing not seen by the toon for many seasons and being influential in the best of a very good season.
Fabricio Coloccini being the orchestrata of the defence and behind him Tim Krul showing that he is one of the very best goalkeepers in the PL

All of which leads me to believe that it’s not down to tactics but player performances that win football matches. Pardew claims to have instilled lessons into the squad. Time will tell.

  • 62 LooneyToon41 // Jul 22, 2013 at 1:33 PM

@61. Ian Toon. Excellent post. I’d add ‘Team spirit’ as an issue too. Reminds me a little of the current Australian Cricket team (if you follow cricket). Confidence and spirit v lack of it, can go a long way (up or down) in football.
