It was a poor and uncoordinated display by Newcastle in the first half against Pacos de Ferreira, and we again went behind after 15 minutes with a goal from Caetano, and Newcastle found it hard to get going.
The Newcastle side before the game.
But after 30 minutes the game started to get out of control and ended up with the referee giving a red card to Coloccini and to Pacos’ Caetano, after some reckless tackles from both sides.
In the second half Newcastle played a lot better , as both sides calmed down, and it was all change and after 61 minutes Shola Ameobi scored a good goal with his left foot to level the scores, and it was Shola’s second goal in pre-season.
And Newcastle continued to play well in that second half, and with any luck we could have won this game, after another poor first half performance.
Alan Pardew will point to the second half of this game where we looked a good team and certainly passed the ball around very well indeed, and slowed the game down well.
This is the game as we saw it:
Newcastle almost went ahead in this game after just two minutes after a Yohan Cabaye free-kick that wasn’t cleared but Shola Ameobi with a decent chance ballooned the ball over the bar.
The play was fairly even at the start of the game, but then after 15 minutes Pacos de Ferreira went ahead, when the defense failed to cut out a cross down the left and Caetano hit a nice effort past Elliot, and the Magpies were 1-0 down.
On 23 minutes Ben Arfa went on a good run and then he hit a good shot which just went over the bar – a good piece of play from the Frenchman.
And then after 25 minutes Mathieu Debuchy seemed to handle the ball, as he tried to control a high cross into the box, and he got away with it, although it could have been just outside the penalty box – but Debuchy’s got a bad habit of fouling in or near the box.
The game then started to get out of control as the players were auguring with each other and Cabaye was brought down, but refused to shake the hand of Poulson, and then Steven Taylor put in a wild tackle on Caetano, and fans were not happy with that tackle.
The game was start – stop as the players were arguing with each other, and Anunciacao was booked for a bad tackle on Sammy Ameobi when he was in full flight.
And then we saw two red cards after about 36 minutes – and really the referee handled this situation very poorly, and made things a lot worse if anything – and so much for a friendly game.
First of all there was a red card shown to Caetano, but then on the TV replay Coloccini was seen to get hold of the neck of a Pacos player and the Newcastle captain subsequently was given a red card – so this game has been wrecked with both sets of players loosing their cool after 36 minutes and both sides were down to 10 men.
Why the referee didn’t give both players a yellow card and warn them we have no idea, after all this is a pre-season game where players are trying to get fit, but to be fair the players didn’t help things either with some reckless tackling.
Half time came and it was still 1-0 and Newcastle were finding it difficult to get going in this game – it even seems like it’s early pre-season.
At half time Yohan Cabaye, Hatem Ben Arfa and Sammy Ameobi were replaced by Santon, Jonas and Gouffran – with Davide Santon went to left back with Yanga-Mbiwa going to center-back with Steven Taylor.
Newcastle then started to calm things down with some nice passing, but the penetration was poor, and it seemed both sets of players had been told at half time to cool it at half time, after some reckless tackling for both sides in the first 45 minutes.
Gouffran was showing up well and showing a lot of energy in the first 15 minutes of the second half.
And then after 60 minutes Shola Ameobi was given the ball in the inside left position, and he banged the ball home in great style with his left foot – Shola’s second goal in pre-season.
Cheick Tiote then put in a perfectly timed strong but fair tackle, that stopped a Pacos attack down the right wing, as Newcastle were starting to play well, and on 66 minutes some nice passing saw Newcastle get out of a tricky situation and the lads were starting to play with a lot more confidence.
On 70 minutes Jonas put Davide Santon through down the left wing, and his cross was met by Debuchy who ballooned the ball over the bar with his right foot, that was a decent chance, and he probably had time to control the ball.
On 73 minutes Shola Ameobi went off and he had a decent game and he was replaced by Sylvain Marveaux.
Both sides were going for the goal as it was end to end as Alan Pardew brought on Mike Williamson and Haris Vuckic after 78 minutes for Moussa Sissoko and Steven Taylor.
On 80 minutes Newcastle were continuing to pass the ball around nicely but we need another goal for the win – and then a good cross from the right win in a Pacos attack was just missed by a Pacos forward as the ball went right across the six yard box.
On 85 minutes Yoan Gouffran came off with his right boot off – so we don’t know if he’s injured.
And then on 90 minutes Pacos almost scored, as they caught Newcastle with a quick break in a 3 on 2 situation, and the ball was put past Elliot and was going into the net, but a great piece of play from Vuckic saved the day for the Magpies.
Vuckic managed to get back and hit the ball over the bar as it was gong into the goal, and it was an excellent piece of work from the Slovenian.
And that was it as the referee blew the final whistle – a good display from Newcastle in the second half to draw the game at 1-1, and at times we looked a good side.
Alan Pardew managed to get all the subs a game tonight except for young goalkeeper Jak Alnwick and in the three pre-season games Newcastle have it well-balanced – one win – one defeat and one draw – and six goals scored and six goals conceded.

Pacos de Ferreira (4-2-3-1): Antonio Filipe; Tony, Ruben, Roberto Dias, Helder Lopes; Andre Leao, Anunciacao (c); Manuel Jose, Sergio Oliveira, Caetano; Jaime Poulson

Comment #43Totally agree, yes is about fitness. But surely we can field a side that uses or players technical ability whilst also playing players in their preferred positions. Heard sissoko was out on the right wing at times, which is just add bad when Pardew thought Cisse could play there.
So much for me not being negative again, Hhmm I’ll call it constructive criticism, that’s slightly better.

Comment #54Patoon – who was played out of position?
Sissoko has played out wide in the past so lets say Pardew was seeing how he fared! Mbiwa can play anywhere across the back 4!

Comment #59Tiote has to go. I have played a lot of football and when you have people in the team who are terrible and are keeping good players on the bench it makes you feel dead inside. You lose 20 per cent of your game as your carrying and covering the terrible players, it makes you look sh!t. Pardew needs to realise you need intelligence (anita) in front of the back 4 not a huge tackle and sloppy passer. All i am saying is pardew playing the favourites has a huge knock on effect with the players not just us fans and it shows

Just needs confidence and a chance.

Comment #62I think I should point out to the younger more inexperienced posters and those that play Football Manager etc before they get a stiffy – that the garment that Jonas was wearing under his shirt was not a brassiere ( the things your mams’ wear) but a harness/vest containing electronic monitoring equipment.

I mentioned that quote a couple of weeks ago and is true in Pardews case. Same style of football and woefull corners.
Looks like the script writers have been at it again for the soap opera that is NUFC :
. Kinnear in
.Star (and only) striker using his religion to try and jump ship despite being caught out gambling
. No players signed
I sometimes think I am part of some Truman show and people watch my misfortune as an NUFC fan.

Comment #70Pardew is out of his depth managing this football team. He just doesn’t know what he is doing. We have no style or identity on the pitch and our players seem lost all the time. It’s just too chaotic.
