Newcastle Linked With Norwegian Midfielder

8:52 am, Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 24 Comments

If it’s one thing Newcastle like to do these days in the transfer market, it’s to sign players on a free transfer – it’s much cheaper that way than having to pay a transfer fee, and with the rather frugal way the club is being run by Mike Ashley, perhaps that makes us interested in Manchester City’s Abdisalam Ibrahim.

abdisalam ibrahim

Abdisalam Ibrahim – 21 year-old Manchester City midfielder

The 21 year-old player stands 6’2″ tall, and was born in Mogadishu, Somalia but moved to Norway when he was just six years old, and has played for all the Norwegian youth side through U23 but has never played for the full Norwegian National side.

Ibrahim still has one year left on his contract at the Etihad Stadium, and his play has been compared to that of former Arsenal great Patrick Vieira , and he has a release clause of £750K but is being allowed to leave on a free transfer.

Newcastle already have a player who has been compared to Patrick Vieira in Moussa Sissoko, who looked good and indeed very good at times for Newcastle, after he joined us from French club Toulouse in January.

So with Ibrahim having played only once for Manchester City, we would be very surprised if there was any interest in the player coming from Newcastle, even though reports suggest we could be interested.

Before Newcastle think of bringing in any other players, we need at least two strikers through the door, that’s where the cupboard is bare (very bare) at the moment on Tyneside.

What do you think?

    Since Sunderland have appointed their director of football , they have signe 7 first team players.

    Since Kinnear has been appointed, hes gone on a 10 day holiday and signed no one.

    What a piece of S*** that man is .

    Probably easier to write an article on who we’re NOT linked with

  • 5 John Tudor // Jul 23, 2013 at 8:58 AM

    is he another muslin off to africa nations why no striker

  • 6 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 23, 2013 at 8:59 AM

    An odd link, a Gosling replacement maybe? How long has he been at City? Does he class as Homegrown (3 years at City)?

    Does anyone know if the Abdulrahman that is on trial at Blackburn is the same one that played in the olympics and was unlikely to get a work permit when linked with Man City last year?

  • 7 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 23, 2013 at 9:01 AM

    JT,
    It says he has taken up Norwegian nationality, so I doubt they will be appearing in the African Nations. :-) Probably get similar odds on Somalia qualifying as well!

    No it is not the same player Lilongwe Geordie.

    Philip cocu is expecting nufc to come back with another bid for jeroen zoet.
    maybe one of jk’s first signings to come in as percy predicted this week.

    we dont need to look for a replacement for perch/gosling until we replace Ba, plus another CF, a winger and a fullback.

    Instead we are linked with JFK’s understoody, goalkeepers and players worth less than £1M!

    Geordie69,
    Cheers, thought it was a bit of a fall from grace for him!!

    First Row football are listing our game to be shown at 8. Whether it gets on our screens or not is anyone’s guess

  • 13 Tommyy // Jul 23, 2013 at 9:09 AM

    So tired of Newcastle now.

  • 14 John Tudor // Jul 23, 2013 at 9:09 AM

    lilo he may have taken it but that gives him dual nationality has he played for full norway side

  • 15 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 23, 2013 at 9:11 AM

    JT,
    Not yet, I’m not sure what the U23/playing for the olympic side rules are mind. Still, Somalia have about as much chance as Norway of making the AFCON in the next 10 years so shouldn’t be an issue.

  • 16 rainrix // Jul 23, 2013 at 9:13 AM

    York…. The game is being broadcast on portuguese tv, so in all likeliness someone will stream it to the masses.

  • 17 Yorkgeordie // Jul 23, 2013 at 9:14 AM

    Cheers for that. That’s my evening spent trying to get a link that works

    Off thread but reposted from previous thread. (Ed, you’re tattling them out this morning!)

    Good morning Lil, how’s tricks out there in Malawi?

    Picking up on your points, I feel that whilst the appointment of a DoF was a good move, events so far in Joe Kinnear’s tenure suggest he is not the right man for that role.

    He’s clearly talked himself up and convince Ashley that he’s the man to be his trusty lieutenant. It’s also clear from recent events that he most certainly not!

    He’s a disruptive presence in the club where he should be bringing harmony and cohesion;

    He a terrible communicator who does not command respect and authority with the media;

    He’s probably out of touch with football in 2013;

    He’s clearly out of his depth as judged on his contribution to seeing the product of the supposed SWAT analysis of the football side of the business;

    Apart from those minor weaknesses, he should go far!!

    Now, how does Ashley undo what has clearly been a questionable appointment? There lies his dilemma

  • 20 nut meg // Jul 23, 2013 at 9:20 AM

    Time4tv have it on their schedule on channel 8 @ 8 o’clock

  • 21 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 23, 2013 at 9:21 AM

    Good Morning Lesh,
    It is cod here in Malawi at the moment, the winter month of July is not fun, it drops as low as around 15 degrees here somedays! It is odd that I actually now find that cold and wrap up in jumpers for anything below 20!

    As for Ashley rectifying the Kinnear situation, who knows. Maybe Kinnear will surprise us and wrap up 3 top players in the net fortnight, unlikely, but got to cling on to some hope. The other question is would Ashley want to rectify it? I had hoped that him getting involved personally in Jan was a change in his mindset, but the appointment of Kinnear, and the way we are dragging our feet is gradually draining that out of me.

    On the plus side, I don’t feel that we have missed out on any players that were attainable that I would have wanted. Anyone joining a CL club was never going to come. Bony, maybe, but not convinced. After that I can’t think of many players I am sad to see elsewhere.

    Spurs have similar transfer priorities to us, they need
    a striker or two. The football media around the globe
    advises us that Franco Baldini has met up with his
    Valencia equivalents in order to finalise the signing
    of Soldado.

    So with the David Villa and Benteke options
    disappearing their answer to JK( sic) looks
    to accelerate negotiations.

    What is uncle Joe doing? I am reliably advised
    that there have been no recent sittings of him or Carr
    at Newcastle airport.

    joe is keeping quiet just as you lot told him to be. i still think he will come good on transfers just be a bit more patient is required keep the faith brothers
