Newcastle Midfielder Having Medical – Praise From Pardew

3:14 pm, Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 185 Comments

News in a number of papers today that Newcastle midfielder Dan Gosling is very close to a move to Crystal Palace, where he will link up with his former manager at Plymouth Argyle – Ian Holloway – who gave him his first team debut as a 16 year-old seven years ago.

dan gosling atromitos

Dan Gosling – three seasons at Newcastle

Dan joined Newcastle three years ago on a free transfer from Everton, but has failed to win a place in the Newcastle first team, and over three seasons he’s played only 26 times for Newcastle with one goal.

The 23-year-old is keen to end his spell in the north-east, where he has been plagued by injury, and it will be good for Dan to get regular football elsewhere.

This is what Alan Pardew said about Gosling  today:

“When he was fit, Dan was behind some fantastic players – Yohan Cabaye, Check Tiote, Moussa Sissoko and Vurnon Anita,” ““With the game time he’d get it wouldn’t be fair for me to have him in the squad.”

“We need the room in terms of the finance to get other players in. We wish him well. He’s been a terrific lad on the training field here. He was never anything other than 100% committed in his training.

“Like all players, there’s a time for them to find their first-team place. I think Dan feels at Crystal Palace he’s got a great chance of making a career where he’s a regular starter.”

Those are good words from the Newcastle manager, and Dan himself, even though he didn’t play much on Tyneside, has said he loved his time at Newcastle – so that’s always good to hear.

His agent yesterday told the South London Press that the player was having a medical at Crystal Palace, so a fee must have been agreed with Newcastle and also personal terms agreed with the player.

That will mean Dan is the fourth Englishman to depart St. James’ Park this summer, following Danny Simpson (QPR), Steve Harper (Hull) and James Perch (Wigan) in seeking to play their football elsewhere.

We expect an announcement that Dan has signed for Crystal Palace any time now – assuming he passes his medical of course.

Comments welcome.

    Dan was worth a try.
OK, so it didn’t work out for us.
I’m sure Dan was happy to get the chance and
at least have top medical treatment to get him
    fit again.

  • 2 Transfer Sage // Jul 23, 2013 at 3:21 PM

He never really filled his early potential he showed at everton after the injury he picked up.

Further injuries and lack of first team games has held him back even more.

In the best interest of Newcastle and Gosling to move on really.

  • 3 kt97toonarmy // Jul 23, 2013 at 3:23 PM

We had a choice between rodwell nd gosling. Nd we picked wrong. As always

  • 4 JackButler // Jul 23, 2013 at 3:25 PM

Best of luck to the lad, just hope he has more luck in future with his injuries as he’s been through a nightmare since joining us

  • 5 Rowan Milsted // Jul 23, 2013 at 3:27 PM

Apparently two of Scumberland’s deals are now off. So there’s some good news at least!

  • 6 jazzyp // Jul 23, 2013 at 3:27 PM

I know he had his injuries but has never proven to of any real value to our squad. At best would only be a fringe player next season anyway.

  • 7 kt97toonarmy // Jul 23, 2013 at 3:28 PM

1 gud thing about our transfer market is that we are getting rid of terrible players which is gud but replacements are needed. To make a gud team to challange for trophys and europe again. Just need ashley to spend decently over next few windows. Unlikley though isnt it?

    KT97 @ 3
I’m sure we got Gosling when he was out of contract. Moyes was furious cos he wanted him to sign another contract but was too late with the offer. Rodwell as far as I know was never a target.

  • 10 lesh // Jul 23, 2013 at 3:40 PM

There you go, some transfer news.

I’d love to see Kinnears objectives, aims and priorities.

I’m sure I’d not be the only one who’d be interested to know just what he’s done that’s productive in the last seven weeks and what he has planned that will add value to the club.

I also wonder if Mike Ashley’s asking the same questions or whether he’s just put all of his trust into Kinnear and lets him get on with things?

Given that Kinnear’s still with us, I suspect it’s the latter and that is frightening, neglectful, disgraceful!

Ashley, get a grip man. Persuade Kinnear that he really should spend more (all) time with his family….. Poor sods!

  • 11 kt97toonarmy // Jul 23, 2013 at 3:41 PM

    Nut meg

Back then he was. I dont rate rodwell but hes better than gosling

  • 12 Premiership Manager // Jul 23, 2013 at 3:42 PM

He was never really given a chance, same as many of our up and coming players. The club has to strike the right balance if we are to progress and letting players like Routledge go without giving them a chance in the first team is inexcusable.

Just hope Fergusson and Campbell get a chance this year.

  • 13 richyg01 // Jul 23, 2013 at 3:45 PM

    Good luck to him.

He was a hot prospect at Everton, but like many players with huge potential, his career has had the brakes applied by injury – Lets face it, if he had not become injured, he would not have ended up here.

Decent lad, hopefully he goes on and stays injury free and enjoys his time with his first club.

    Re post on previous article

I would take bent, altho not sure how he would work with cisse.

Its been said before but i see cisse as a andy cole type striker, and he was made by number 10s – beardsley sheringham and yorke.

We dont have that – as much as pardew thinks sissoko is one he’s not.

But in terms of back up to cisse i can think of worse.

    Remy would be a deffo

It might look like Paul Ince’s tactics sheet, as spotted on MOTD2 just before he was sacked, that had a picture of the goal with an arrow pointed at it and the word ‘Shoot.’ That was priceless.

I can only hope that there is a plan and that work is underway. I expect JK, Pards and GC must have drawn up a list of targets. I’d love to see it, though. Kinnear’s list probably has Gazza and Redknapp on it.

Yeah, it’s hard to see Bent and Cisse working well together. They’re too similar in certain respects and neither can play wide. I think at that at the right price and on reasonably low wages Bent would be very handy to have in the squad, especially when Cisse was away on ACON duty. I’ like to think that he’d love to stay in the PL and play for us so he would accept a wage cut – I’m pretty sure he said he was keen on NUFC.

For me HBA is the ideal number 10 and I hope we play him there this season. It would mean signing at least one quality winger (which we should do anyway); I’m still hoping that something materialises with Sinclair.

Pardew once complained about our thin squad. It’s all good shifting the dead wood but we need replacements and additions. What the funk is the transfer window for. We need to take advantage and start signing players ASAP. I can hear Pardew’s shpeel now – “we tried to get them over the line but we are not willing to pay over the odds”

    I’m getting rather furious

  • 32 sparky55 // Jul 23, 2013 at 4:20 PM

This is about the ‘unknown’ man who has just gotten the Barcelona job..

“…Martino instead took a year out from the game before returning to his beloved Newell’s and guiding the club to their first title since 2004 in the space of just 18 months. The achievement was all the more remarkable when you consider that Newell’s had finished 19th and 18th in the two seasons before his appointment.
His final game in charge of Newell’s was the semi-final of this year’s Copa Libertadores when they lost to Atletico Mineiro on penalties. Were the fans annoyed with this defeat? No, instead they went outside Martino’s house and started chanting his name and waving flags to thank him for the way he had transformed the club.
Stylistically Martino seems to fit in well with Barcelona. He likes to play a 4-3-3 with a false number nine, but has shown flexibility with his formations and tactics in the past.
South American coaches have had a chequered history after moving to Europe but if anyone has a chance of succeeding, it looks like Martino is a man who fits the bill.”

so here’s a man that very few people have heard of…about the same age as Pardew yet he’s regarded as a progressive manager who sets up his team to play a beautiful passing game and has therefore gotten the Barcelona Job…and what do we get…a 50 year old gambler who is stuck in the past playing 4-4-2 til he dies of gets sacked whatever comes first.

…and everyone out there says there’s no-one out there better than Pardew…well don’t you believe it…me grannie knows more about
football than Pardew…he’s f****g pathetic and this club will go no-where til he’s sacked.

If every fan at the first game puts 70 quid in a hat then we’ll have enough money to pay up his contract!

    I’m in!

KT we were never ever in for Rodwell and thats saying something because we were/are linked with practically every player in the world. We got Gosling because the club was supposed to offer him a new deal in writing before a certain date and they did not. He was free, English and had potential, I remember being stoked we got him. Cant blame the higher ups for him never being fit and not impressing when given the chance.

Jeez now if we could get some actual wingers on our team and get rid of Obertan and Jonas we’d be looking better.

    Think about it.

Would players choose to come to a club where fans cause trouble?

Would our current players think twice about leaving because they don’t need the hassle?

What would it achieve, we all know MA is a stubborn rich businessman, rich businessmen stay rich businessmen by being frugal with their cash, that will never change.

You say that picture could be any black man in the North East. Are you therefore saying that all black men look the same? This particular picture looks a lot like Cisse. It might not be him but it sure as hell looks like him.

Are you stupid? When have I mentioned, said or even related to saying “all black men look the same”. People like you should go off this blog for even thinking as such.

Clearly you lack in your literature or English language to have such understanding and should re-consider what you say before it leaves your mind and mouth onto the internet.

  • 43 sparky55 // Jul 23, 2013 at 4:38 PM

This is a small part of a piece about the new Barcelona manager

Martino instead took a year out from the game before returning to his beloved Newell’s and guiding the club to their first title since 2004 in the space of just 18 months.
South American coaches have had a chequered history after moving to Europe but if anyone has a chance of succeeding, it looks like Martino is a man who fits the bill.

So here’s a 50 year old ex Argentinian footballer who was getting paid peanuts in his home land all of a sudden been given one of the best managerial jobs in the world…and what do we get…a 50 year old washed up gambler who has no idea how to set up his team, no imagination, no flexibility and no idea how to get the best from his team.

…yet everyone on this site reckons there no-one out there better than Pardew and better the devil you know and all that sh!te.

Pardew is the problem at our great club and the ONLY thing holding us back.

If all 52000 fans put 70 quid each in a hat we can pay up Pardews contract and then get to watch some decent football!

Seems rather good value to me and I’m in!

  • 44 lesh // Jul 23, 2013 at 4:38 PM

  • 45 richyg01 // Jul 23, 2013 at 4:39 PM

What is a more beneficial window to us:

    1. Hold onto the key players we have and strengthen in required positions.

    2. Loose key players and bring in (potentially) lesser replacements.

I think at the moment, we are going down route 1 and by removing some deadwood, we are freeing up funds in the wage budget for others coming in.

  • 46 Toon Avenger // Jul 23, 2013 at 4:39 PM

When I initially read Turkishs’ post -it was absolutely clear that his comments were in respect of the poor quality of the photo -allegedly of Cisse – and clearly no other interpretation inferred or suggested.

  • 61 richyg01 // Jul 23, 2013 at 4:59 PM

Mike Ashley Values NUFC @ £267M

    Pardew’s Contact = £1.5M/Yr to 2020 = £10.5M

    JFK’s Contract = £1M/Yr to 2016 = £3M (Est)

    So that is £280.5M

TADS…We’ve constantly disagreed about this over the years…yes Ashley employed him and yes Ashley can sack him…but you’d be the first to moan if Ashley sacked him quoting he deserves another chance and all that bollox…

so if MA does sack him and replace him with anyone else, will you chastise him for sacking pardew or for not sacking him sooner or simply chastise the new manager because you’ve never heard of him or think he’s any better Pardew in your opinion.

Doesn’t really matter who runs the club, having Pardew in charge of such a talented squad is a massive miscarriage of justice and he’s holding back the club and it’s performances IMO.

Ashley is trying to lever him out…he’s just going about it the wrong way because the longer this runs and runs the more the detrimental effect it’s having on the club…he should just sack him and take his medicine.

Many problems are down to Llambias and his legacy.
Appointing his out of work pal with no other interviews for the job, knifing Hughton, handing out 8 year contracts like confetti and getting us stitched up with wonga.

Not condoning Ash but I do think he genuinely is clueless about football and took his eye of the ball while deadly derek was shadily working away in the background.

Our first 11 played in the right formation is easily top 8, but even with the best D.O.F in world football and a manager who won the Johnson painter trophy I just can not see that happening somehow!!

Some people going on like we’ve sold Ronaldo, howay man people, we’ve got rid of some average players to make room to sign, hopefully, a decent couple of signings that would progress us.
Quantity hasn’t been our problem, it’s been quality. Just hope we can actually get the players in who would improve the team

OK Rotunda pal I’ll amend Marveaux and stick Colocini instead.

  • 84 Toon_Tom // Jul 23, 2013 at 5:34 PM

I’d give Pardew one more season to prove his worth. 2years ago he did the unthinkable and nearly clinched us champions league (yes luck, other teams under performing etc etc etc) but we finished 5th. Last year we didn’t give Europa a good enough crack in my opinion and played some awful football. Give him one more season and see what happens. We will be hard pushed to find a decent manager who is available who would want to manage under Cashley and JFK.

Pardew in his favour is a good man manager and the majority of the players seem to respect him.

Don’t expect miracles this window but we will get 1or2 forwards in and maybe another. Our January acquisitions will be more climatised and comfortable in the Prem and hopefully hit tr ground running. Cisse, if still here, needs to find his golden touch again and get some tips regarding the offside rule, Krul must continue to conquer, our flying wing backs need to work on their defence and Tiote needs to find his form. Apart from that …… ;)

So long Dan, thanks for trying anyway, even if a bit too hard at times. Never lived up to the promise after a bad injury, but lets face it, he never looked Premiership quality did he.

Its been bad on here at times but on this thread there have been some pretty inane outbursts – first that gosling was an expensive alternative to rodwell, that was funny. Second, that our younger players, like Gosling, don’t get given ‘the chance’! While I hold my sides, please explain why a young Professionally-indentured track of academy and reserve football, followed by loans to top pro sides and then several tries out in not just PL but Europa League constitutes ‘not being given a chance’. What a load. People sometimes just say stuff they have heard from another idiot. Our youngsters ‘chances’ are a huge part of the reason we failed last year. You could argue that the likes of Campbell should have had more bg-game time but I for one don’t blame Pardew for that, he was fighting fires all last season with the problems caused by injuries and fielding weakened teams. He may have also made a right hash when he got a good side together, but I wouldn’t stoop to levelling the charge he didn’t give the background squad a bash.

    @78…replaced properly in whose opinion?

Don’t you see this is the crux of the problem…no-one threw Martino’s name into the hat when we all discussed who we would like because hardly anyone had heard of him.

None of us really know who’s a good replacement because none really knows how anyone is going to turn out.

We all hated the Pardew appointment…he got to 5th and we started to like him, then he fell of his high horse big style so no-one wants him anymore….so was ashley right to employ him or wrong to employ him…the answer to that depends on when you ask the question.

right now Pardew does’t deserve to be cleaning boots and needs replacing asap…but in my opinion literally any manager will do because any new manager will generate a positive reaction from the players who have been subjected to hoofball for the last 15 months.

don’t care what anyone says but IMO he’s lost the respect of the footballers in the squad and that’s why Cisse and cabs are going for starters…nowt to do with Ashley…all because of Pardew

  • 96 TurkishFan101 // Jul 23, 2013 at 5:48 PM

BBC Newcastle Total Sport right now and they are spot on talking about how if even if we sign a new striker or 2, if we cannot create chances from midfield which is a big problem still looking at pre-season and that then is there any point in signing another striker or 2 to witness same tactics and players being played out of position and just hoofing going on? I dont think so.

Don’t get me wrong, I want strikers as main priority but was is the point if we cannot create chances for them to finish and they play in midfield out of position. Nothing will change unless the system is changed. This means Pardew needing a backroom staff and the famously mentioned Technical Advisor which has not happened.

  • 97 viv // Jul 23, 2013 at 5:50 PM

Rotonda he caused a lot of crap last season and his legs have gone.

  • 98 Laurent Robert 32 // Jul 23, 2013 at 5:50 PM

Signings are needed, but a new manager is a must. If JFK has come in simply to remove captain con-man(ager), then it’s ridiculous how he was given a wedge of a contract without clauses.

The whole thing is just a load of rubbish. Kinnear and Pardew are lower level material if you ever needed to know what that is. Well out of date tactics and philosophies.

    It’s simply dreadful.

For the ones saying give him a chance etc, fair enough, you’re entitled to your opinion, I have no problem with that. But how long does that go on for before a change is needed? How bad do we have to get? We were gifted our survival from an already relegated side and a player with a unibrow who just couldn’t be bothered, yet Pardew tells us we battle to a win.

…If last year’s red flag of despair wasn’t being waved obviously enough for the silver devil to removed, then what is? If he had success at other clubs I may be more entitled to cut some slack, but he’s been mega poor there as well. Therefore his managerial average, is mega poor.

In a way I feel sorry for the people who believe Pardew’s nonsense which he comes out with. He’s deluding people with his pre-prepared answers and distorting the truth to make sure he’s still getting his wages.

Ashley’s footballing employment decision making is unacceptable. Jobs for the boys is not how to give the club what it deserves. Not his boys anyroad. But whereas Pardew just needs to be sacked, Ashley’s removal is a lot harder.

The club, apart from Carr and the players, is in such a poor state, I have little hope, confidence or belief that it will improve any time soon.

Top level football is seeing technical ability and flare which isn’t there lower down the standard. Seeing defending for most of the second half and long punts forward, with little movement, overlapping and triangles is an insult for people to pay hundreds of pounds to see.

Your right nobody had heard of Martino, do you know why barca have?
Because they have a highly evolved world wide scouting system that scouts all aspects of the modern game

They scout players from the age of four

They scout coaches from all over the world for all brackets of there coaching and youth academy

They scout potential coaches and managers, they scout there philosophy, they scout there mentality, they scout there man management skills

MA does absolutely non of that, he’s armed with a list of names of blokes from his local and a copy of his 1992 Panini PL sticker book

You asked in who’s opinion he’d be properly replaced?
Well how about someone with a footballing brain for a start, not MA

How about by a qualified board who interview several candidates and go on who’s most suited to the team that’s in place, you know the best man for the job, once again not MA

I remember someone joking about JFK suddenly it’s not that funny and is a real possibility that he could be manager, and that sparky is why pardew isn’t the problem with this club

Carry on banging the pardew drum though just don’t complain when JFK is at the helm
Oh and remember, pardew survived his relegation battle, despite JFK’s claims we 15th when left and well in the sh1t only heading in one direction and the pressure near well killed the man

The whole club had a bad season after that with no real investment. some bad tactics and so many injuries. Pardew isn’t the one only one to blame for that season and does deserve a second chance.

AP is the fall guy – bet he did not want to sell and not replace our top scorer in Jan.

If you sack AP you get JFK – it is not a computer game – it is a dictatorship

  • 156 sparky55 // Jul 23, 2013 at 6:38 PM

1-2 odds on that all midfielders come off the pitch with a cricked neck having watched the ball fly over their heads every two minutes.

Pardew – second longest management servant in the prem deserves one more season

Love the way you ITK’s never actually state anything so you can always come back later and go yeah see I told ya

  • 159 Toon_Tom // Jul 23, 2013 at 6:40 PM

If Pardew walked or was sacked then JFK would step in as an interim manager – then who on earth would want the job?

  • 160 sparky55 // Jul 23, 2013 at 6:41 PM

2nd because all the good managers retired or moved on this season…not because of his record for sure…it’s the worst managerial record in the premiership right now so what’s deserving about that

It didn’t fall with him though did it? Dekka had that duty previously. Don’t let your hatred for Pardew lead you into fabricating your own version of reality. Pardew’s never been involved in the negotiations and has always phrased such answers to questions on transfers, to make it known it’s not down to him.

  • 162 Toon_Tom // Jul 23, 2013 at 6:41 PM

    Sparky – just stating fact.

Id give him one more season – who do you think, realistically, would take over?

  • 163 TurkishFan101 // Jul 23, 2013 at 6:42 PM

    @Bring Back Laurent Robert

Chill, mistakes happen as I was thinking about the team-sheet that would be out and was listening to the radio at the same time. I corrected myself if you read above thanks to another fellow fan on here. So no need to be out upfront and say that I am basically deaf.

Also interesting you diverted from the debate about MA and picked out a one line comment about players leaving

i just feel Ashley should get all the stick i dont think the club would be an improvement if pardew was sacked. If we got a new owner in that would go get a redknapp or Benitez then great but aslong as Ashley is here a think pardew certainly isn’t the worst manager we could have

  • 166 Laurent Robert 32 // Jul 23, 2013 at 6:48 PM

It’s all so deflating. I haven’t been as underwhelmed as I am now when it comes to football. Simply because I just don’t see a way out of it.

Poyet as manager whilst being one of the boys would be the other thing where a pomtentially attacking philosophy may work. Still not exactly amazing, but at least a better offensive strategy.

  • 167 archaeomag // Jul 23, 2013 at 6:49 PM

    @toonarmydown
Guitie playing in a sombrero Obertan with antenna – or signing somebody really tall – that would be exciting
JFK dribbling on the touchline would be embarrassing and frighten the children.

  • 168 TurkishFan101 // Jul 23, 2013 at 6:51 PM

    @Levi

The problem is if Mike Ashley had been running NUFC as well as he is with SportsDirect we would be a success. It seems, he lacks the correct advisors for the reasons of footballing and its ethics of culture as-well. There are a range of managers avaialable and are on very low basic wages that could transform our club. The coaching staffs, the technical advisors available would love to work for our club. So it comes back to his knowledge and his contacts he has, and Llambias has not helped a bit as his only way of trust and how he would change our club has all gone. Graham Carr is known as being one of his best mates and I genuinely think, he has conducted allot of meetings in order to see what he can do and the sacking of Llambias should not come as a surprise as he was the one that got Wonga as our Sponsor, he gave Pardew the 8 year deal and stuffed Virgin without there knowledge.

I truely think something will change but not untill Pardew is out. It is either hes good good plans otherwise he will just appoint JK and be done with it as he is getting all the money he needs as long as Newcastle United stay in the Premier League.

  • 170 Toon_Tom // Jul 23, 2013 at 6:52 PM

The way it’s going – if we keep Cisse, Cabaye and Krul and get 1 more forward then ill be happy. As long as Jonas is dropped and saylor fights Mbiwa for a CB slot ill be happy. As long as Tiote pulls his finger out and finds form ill be happy. As long as Debuchy and Santon concentrate on their defence more ill be happy.

    All possible

  • 171 Jamseyd24 // Jul 23, 2013 at 6:53 PM

Just talking to my friend who is a Fulham fan, and the feeling down there is that they are pretty confident that Bent will be there by the weekend. Again could be bull sh1t but I feel they have more faith in their board than we do our to get players over the line.

  • 172 Toon_Tom // Jul 23, 2013 at 6:54 PM

Turkish – Ashley IS running NUFC like he runs sports direct, that’s the problem

  • 175 plana // Jul 23, 2013 at 6:55 PM

  • 176 Toon_Tom // Jul 23, 2013 at 6:56 PM

The feeling among the Fulham fans I’ve seen is that they want bent about as much as they want AIDS

  • 178 TurkishFan101 // Jul 23, 2013 at 6:57 PM

    @Toon_Tom

Its not a problem if he is running NUFC like Sports Direct, as Sports Direct is basically the most successful sports business in the UK and is expanding worldwide. This is because the right people are appointed in the right roles.

Mike Ashley lacks the footballing knowledge as I stated above, allot of coaches, managers, staff are available for very cheap that could transform our club. I like our policy of buying young gems with our chief scout Graham Carr. Its proven success and other clubs are following our footpaths.

well i do dis agree slightly but respect your opinion. I just think its great that we managed to actually have a discussion something alot of people seem to struggle with on this blog haha. Off to work now. Maybe a 3-0 win and a signing when i get back

  • 181 The puppy formerly known as prince // Jul 23, 2013 at 7:05 PM

@ 170 I couldn’t disagree with that comment more, Ashley actually hunted and employed the right people to help build Sports Direct – gave the business the respect it deserves, at NUFC he gave jobs to friends and let them run the club any which way they wanted; The only good choice being Chris Mort.

@139 how do we owe ashley 130million he owes himself the money he took us down he kept some well payed players to get us promoted but it was his stupidity that cost us money.does any other football fan worry about the debt their club have.i dont think so manu have three times the debt we have their fans are looking forward to a new season.on this blog all you get is we dont want to be another portsmouth or leeds but if we dont invest in new players and we get relegated we could end up like them, look at the last three results of last season enough to scare any supporter

When I mentioned monitoring Kinnear’s performance against business objectives, I was thinking in terms of Ashley appraising Kinnear and acting accordingly – like what they do in properly run businesses.

Strikes me we’re seeing a classic case of the incompetent leading the blind (Ashley being the blond one).

    What a mess!
