Harford Was Coming In As Part Of The Scouting Team

9:28 am, Wednesday, July 24th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 83 Comments

The news over the weekend thing to recruit his former Wimbledon player Mick Harford, and most Newcastle fans so distrust Joe Kinnear, that we wondered if this was a kind of coup to build up his coaching team, in case Alan Pardew falters at the start of this season.

joe kinnear

Joe Kinnear – mistrust surrounds this man

Joe Kinnear has done that kind of thing before when he took over as Director of Football at Luton Town and he immediately installed himself as the manager, but Joe is now 66 years old and has a weak heart, and surely he doesn’t think he can be a manager again – it would be dangerous to his health.

But we’re not sure.

Alan Pardew today has poured cold water on all those reports and he said this today in the Evening Chronicle:

“He was coming in as a scout as part of the scouting team.: “That’s all he was coming in for.” “I don’t where any other titles have come from that people came up with.” “That’s all he was offered.”

Maybe one reason Harford turned down the job is that many Newcastle fans sent him tweets to his Twitter account telling him not to come, and that he wasn’t wanted – and he correctly read the tea leaves.

That’s a possibility, but the press said it was another blow to Newcastle when he turned down the job, and what a load of cobblers that was. :D

And Joe has still to bring in his first signing this summer, but at least he’s been quiet and has not given any more of those daft interviews to the press, and that’s a positive thing.

But now he needs to do his job, and bring in a couple of good strikers soon – very soon.

Comments welcome.

NOTE: We are trying to help Ingo Hagemann who is an International student at Northumbria University studying for an MSc in Sports Marketing, and he’s doing a survey as part of his Masters dissertation. There were some problems earlier but all is OK now – please help Info by taking the survey here – many thanks.

Got to love the tweet by Liverpool Owner John Henry.

“What do you think they’re smoking over there at Emirates?”

  • 2 Levi // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:31 AM

carick wont leave not a chance
also people need to stop putting strikers on the wings, it doesn’t work. Gomis cisse and bent should never asked to be played out wide. That’s why we need a Remy he can do a job in the middle or out wide

  • 3 richyg01 // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:32 AM

    Decent interview with Santon

  • 4 Bearsize // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:32 AM

  • 5 richyg01 // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:33 AM

Have to say that Cabs looked off it last night, like hes not interested anymore, like hes away.

  • 6 jeff // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:34 AM

Lilongwe- I assume your team is facing the opposite way

    Hulk just moved to Monaco
Kevin Prince Boateng would be a great signing i agree
Philip Cololinho? I doubt Lpool would sell but may as well try haha
Purrel Frankel is retired lolol would be some steal at the back
Simeon Jackson isnt good enough for this club
Sticking with Jonas and Ameobi haha brave move, channel the inner pardew
Lucan (i assume u mean Lucas) wont leave PSG. Good suggestion though

negotiating skills of the world’s best director of football have lost their edge!!!

do you think he ever had any!!!!!!

  • 10 cyprus // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:37 AM

On Pacos being a big team, well close but not exactly.

“Ground capacity: 5,255 (256 if you sit tight)”

  • 11 marc // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:39 AM

would anyone agree with this swapping NANI for CAB’S
we have anita sissoko mr T and marv who can create plus we need an out and out winger

  • 12 kt97toonarmy // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:41 AM

    No just NO

Nani is so overpaid nd overated

  • 13 cestriasteve // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:41 AM

Now I cant stand Spurs especially that weasel Levi and gravel voice AVB but you got to give them credit Paulinho and now listening to Sky they are interested in Soldado, theres a team who granted are in London finished in the top half of the league ( thanks to Bales goals) but who get only 36 thousand fans in a stadium which they need to replace. Look at who we are chasing…………Darren Bent!! you got to laugh or you would cry.

  • 14 Galtierez // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:41 AM

Richy, Mario Balotelli retorted to that tweet ‘and that coming from the man that signed Andy Carrol’

  • 15 G // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:42 AM

marc, not for me thanks, whilst Nani has undoubted skill, he lacks commitment, and would want a lot more money than we would be prepared to pay. Although Cabaye has his issues, I would stick with the Devil we know, so to speak.

  • 16 kt97toonarmy // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:43 AM

I dont think bent wud go back. Just pure speculation

  • 17 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:43 AM

A player we value at £20million+ and on c. £50,000 a week, for a playerr Man U value at under £10million who is looking for wages of over £100,000 a week from Man U. Not to mention the step down for him.

    No thanks… :-)

  • 18 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:45 AM

It’s a damn disgrace that some Toon fans were allegedly sending Harford abuse on Twitter because they didn’t want him to join us. Why would people abuse a guy who was being brought in TV scout the lower leagues?

Embarrassing for our club if so called fans do that.

  • 19 JAMSHA // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:46 AM

u fogot our main player HE-Man…. hw come ppl foget this legend

  • 20 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:46 AM

OK ok ok …suppose we are not signing anybody…. I get it joke is over

  • 21 toon kk // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:46 AM

There is definitely unsetelment in our squad and no wonder.
We simply don’t look good enough imo, Pardews tactics doesn’t help.
MA needs to pull his finger out and strengthen our squad or we’ll struggle next season.

  • 22 cyprus // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:47 AM

I’d do a Carrick swap if you are interested! He is ‘destined’ for NUFC if you know what I mean! Nani would do nice too, if he could be motivated at a wee club.

  • 23 richyg01 // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:47 AM

    Ouch, proper bitch-slap there!

  • 24 STB // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:47 AM

Shame Ed couldn’t create a paralell blog where sensible, polite, normal people could exchange their views on Newcastle without it descending into insults, in fighting and general “muppetry”. I’m afraid the blog is no longer a place to come and enjoy reading the comments & opinions of fellow fans. It is too often pervaded with animosity, negativity and lack of mutual respect despite Ed’s honourable efforts to remind posters to behave. A Shame indeed.

  • 25 richyg01 // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:49 AM

Nani would be a great player for us, but it wont happen, his wage demands will be well over our ceiling rate.

Carrick would be a decent player for us, him and Cabaye in the middle would make a formidable partnership.

  • 26 cestriasteve // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:50 AM

marc, I dont think Pardews blueprint for the future is one of 4-4-2 so I dont think anyone will be brought into the wings ( much to my frustration) and as I have blogged before nobody swaps player for player these days.

  • 27 Slank // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:51 AM

    Where’s Wonder Women?

  • 28 joeinthecheapseats // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:51 AM

Kinnear with all these contacts it’s about time you started to deliver the two strikers you promised weeks ago.
We need a good start to the season so get them in Joe along with a left winger it’s not too much to ask

  • 29 Slank // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:52 AM

I’m sure I saw somewhere that Nani was off to some foreign team.

  • 30 RonVanDam // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:52 AM

  • 31 kt97toonarmy // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:53 AM

With many stupid views like swap carrick for cabaye or nani u expect these type of arguments

  • 32 richyg01 // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:53 AM

Or She-Ra, must be a strikers name that one!

  • 33 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:54 AM

    toon kk

Your comments are negative and tiresome. Are you just fishing for attention and I’m taking the bait?

MA doesn’t “need” to do anything just like you don’t need to stop being such a miserable git. I do expect MA to sign a couple of first team players this summer which is what I think we need to do to get where we should be this season. And I’m sure he’ll feel good if be does that. I don’t expect you to stop being a miserable git though…

  • 34 richyg01 // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:54 AM

The beauty of the Internet is that it enables all types of people to ‘contribute’.

The downside is that not all types can ‘contribute’

  • 42 richyg01 // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:59 AM

There is such a blog, you just need to create it yourself.

This here is called ‘Banter’. Deal with it.

  • 43 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 24, 2013 at 9:59 AM

Spot on. I think you can spot the unemployable people on this blog…

  • 44 Topbanana // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:00 AM

Shola scores 2 in pre-season and now he is going to stay.
Ba replacement already at the club. Great :(
Why invest when you can keep all the TV money for yourself. Shola and Campbell what a force that will be.
Premier defenses must be quaking when they vist SJP now.

  • 45 Toon Avenger // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:00 AM

Some clubs like to have depth and quality competition for places not just kids and ‘back up’.

  • 46 toon kk // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:01 AM

JK isn’t as good at his job as he likes to think. He’s obviously searching the lower leagues for a player for MA to make money on instead of getting our under par first team sorted.

  • 47 jeff // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:01 AM

team for first game of the season assuming no new signings:

alnwick (better and more composed then elliot)
santon coloccini tiote (would be a good CB) dummett
    Sissoko Cabaye jonas
    Ben10 Goffy AmeobaSam

  • 48 Toon Avenger // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:01 AM

It seems as of the plan is working.

All blame on the transfer front is now being directed at Kinnear and people are feeling sorry for Alan. Nice ploy to win the masses.

  • 49 richyg01 // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:01 AM

Yeah, you could even say, Most Clubs.

    Just not this one!

  • 50 Slank // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:01 AM

When I read that I thought that’s a strange move.

Surely Aly Cissoko must know that Enrique is their left back.

Perhaps Liverpool have plans for Enrique and/or Cissoko that we cannot see?

  • 51 Yohan Kebab // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:02 AM

if enrique would come back i would have him in a heartbeat

jeff, tiote would be a liability as a cb

  • 52 Toon Avenger // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:03 AM

    Smack or shrooms?

  • 53 lesh // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:03 AM

Of course Pardew’s towing the party line. If that’s what he’s been told then he would repeat it – he knows that Kinnear’s out to make his position impossible and if the reality were to come out on court, then it strengthens his case for constructive dismissal.

Similarly, Harford wouldn’t say a thing else as he’d compromise Kinnear and by default, Ashley.

Don’t underestimate Pardew, he’s playing them at their own game by sounding supportive and giving no grounds to question his commitment to the club and of course his immediate boss.

All he’s got to do is to try to tough it out and deliver results good enough to keep us out of the relegation zone.

Easier said than done and despite his weaknesses, I wish him well and hope he outstays Kinnear.

  • 54 richyg01 // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:03 AM

Yeah, Tiote at CB, there would be penalties galore – If he stayed on the pitch long enough that is.

  • 55 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:03 AM

Hmmm…we had 26 players over 21 before Fergie left on loan. Likely 24 if Gosling leaves. We can only register 25.

Thin squad? Behave! Apart from up front, we’ve got cover everywhere!

  • 56 Slank // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:03 AM

What about the Invisible Man, surely the ultimate fox in the box?

  • 57 richyg01 // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:04 AM

Santon and Enrique down the left could cause some chaos you think?

  • 58 richyg01 // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:04 AM

    Isn’t he our current owner?

  • 59 Toon Avenger // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:04 AM

Yep. Having 2 quality players and only one position on the field brings out the best in people and tries to eliminate inconsistency and complacency.

If you’re guaranteed a start what’s the point?

  • 60 jeff // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:05 AM

i bet if guirodola came here the first thing he would do is make tiote a cb.not creative enough as a midfielder.just like he did with masshyrano and martines. interesting enough pardew coacht masshryano(saurus… lol) and didnt even think to put him at CB.then pepe guirodola comes and BOOM! a new cb was borned literally.

  • 61 wynsleap // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:05 AM

If telling someone on their Twitter account that they shouldn’t be at St. James Park is so easily successful why haven’t all the fans done the same with Kinnear and Ashley?

  • 62 Toon Avenger // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:06 AM

Before I respond I ask what is your intended point? Humour or Seriousness?

  • 63 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:06 AM

Don’t be ridiculous! Why so people but into the conspiracy theory about the JFK appointment??

It simply makes no sense for MA to appoint a shadow management team to oust Pardew. The players wouldn’t stand for it and by the time Pardew resigned, we’d be in serious relegation trouble with half our squad demanding to leave.

  • 64 Toon Avenger // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:07 AM

You’re definitely on shrooms! Pass them around

  • 65 richyg01 // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:07 AM

Hes not creative as a midfielder coz he is not a creative midfielder.

  • 66 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:08 AM

But sadly not a lot of quality in that cover

  • 67 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:09 AM

More ridiculous speculation! Why would Enrique rejoin us and compete with Santon? Why would we sign a big earner to compete at LB when we already have Haidara and MYM who can play there?

1 striker and 1 more attacking player lads. Those are the targets.

  • 68 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:09 AM

    Toon Avenger

    Completely serious.

  • 69 Toon Avenger // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:10 AM

And what would follow? A fire sale, lower wage bill, future ruin and Mike Ashley selling the club to the highest bidder.

He made money by getting us relegated.

What’s the worst he can make financially out of this coming season?

He knows no matter where where the club play they’ll always be lining up to watch.

  • 70 lesh // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:11 AM

And, an important point is that rather than bring his own man in, I’m sure that Carr, with his doubtless extensive scouting contacts and his experience of managing in the lower divisions, could have recommended someone.

Politically, a good move and maybe Kinnear did consult Carr, but more likely he didn’t.

Kinnear is a walking disaster but it’s a case of hoping for minimal damage before he realises that he’s not up to the job or that his heart isn’t up to it!

Please get out Joe, before you do yourself and Newcastle United irreparable damage.

  • 71 Toon Avenger // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:11 AM

So you think we have adequate cover because we have 24 over 21′s?

    What the actual fcuk?

  • 72 jeff // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:12 AM

    richyg01.your a fool.

martines is gonna get dropped or put in cb by pepe guirodola because hes not creative enough on the ball. tiago is actually playing DM for them atm.guirodloa makes sure theres no usless midfield who do nothing going forward a la tiote unless forward is shooting on sight and skying it into row Z lololololol

  • 73 Bambams // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:12 AM

You just know bloody Ashley will only buy once we have sold one of ours…..

You just know the buying club will wait until the last few days of the window, make an offer that will be accepted – we wont have time to bring in replacements ……. press release will follow that we have our target’s and will look to january!

Heard it all before fellow bloggers ?

By January we could, could be struggling.

    Hope not!

  • 74 Slank // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:13 AM

Ever thought about having Campbell at centre half perhaps alongside Anita?

That pairing would completely confuse the opposition as their forwards would be always looking down to see where our central defenders were instead of looking up to see where the ball was.

  • 75 Toon Avenger // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:13 AM

Ha ha ha ha ha ha.

  • 76 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:13 AM

Beyond most people’s current 11 of Krul, Santon, MYM, Colo, Debuchy, Tiote, Cabaye, Sissoko, Ben Arfa, Goofy and Cisse we still have Elliott, Saylor, Haidara, Willo, Anita, Bigi, Marv and Ameobi who are proven to be capable of doing jobs in the PL. Ok Willo isn’t amazing but he’s only 4th choice and so will Shola be soon.

Compare our squad to Everton’s and come back to me…

  • 77 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:13 AM

I assume you mean Javi Martinez, the Spanish player who is at Bayern Munich. Forgive me for asking, but when did Guardiola manage Athletico Bilbao? That was where Martinez first played centre back, under Bielsa.

Also, Mascherano played centre back for Argentina at international level before even joining West Ham….

  • 78 Toon Avenger // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:15 AM

With Pardew in charge we’ll be struggling anyway.

The signings are needed not to strengthen his hand but to add to squad morale.

If we sign a few good players I reckon 12th. If we sign nobody 16th. Of we sign nobody and sell a few more 20th.

I am looking forward to the first home game of the season, if were hammered into the ground by man city and we sign no decent quality players then all hell will break loose at sjp for ashley and co

there is no way that team are good enough yeah fair enough a few good quality players but its the same lot as last season, the team are crying out for a good winger, good striker and maybe defender and whats kinnearbasher doing goes on holiday amazing keep going see what happens

  • 82 toon kk // Jul 24, 2013 at 10:27 AM

I don’t give a f..k what you think. If you think the club is well run and managed good for you. We were nearly relegated last season, did you watch the game last night?
When MA pulls his finger out and gets signings through the door I think everyone will feel happier. But at the moment he hasn’t and it is becoming frustrating.
What I have noticed about you, you get a kick out of stirring other people’s views. Do yours only count? Dip stick.
