Alan Pardew seems to have been very pleased with his players last night, when we drew 1-1 against Pacos de Ferreira after going 1-0 down after 15 minutes, and it was another very good goal from Shola Ameobi that leveled the scores after 60 minutes – a terrific left foot shot that was rifled into the back of the net, and if anything Newcastle were unlucky not to win the game.
Alan Pardew taking notes last night – seen with coach Woodman, Williamson and Vuckic
The game got a bit out of control after about 30 minutes, and it was caused by some wild tackles on both sides, that had players confronting each other, and it seemed the referee lost control of the game a bit at that point.
But Pardew was pleased with Newcastle’s performance, and he had this to say on Newcastle’s web-site today:
“Make no mistake, we were the better side throughout the 90 minutes and we should have won it.” “But to get a performance like that against this standard of opposition – a team who finished third in their league last season – was outstanding from us.”
“We showed our commitment that we weren’t just going to lie down. They are a strong team, a good technical team, but we were better than them and as the game wore on we got stronger, which bodes well for the work we have done on the training pitch this week.”
“Take the sending-off away and I would say it was a really positive night, but that sending-off has just cast a shadow over it slightly.” “In my opinion the referee let too many tackles go and he was asking for trouble.”
“Someone was going to get hurt or sent off, which is what did happen. Unfortunately for us it was our captain, who we know is a pretty calm character, and that tells you what sort of level the game was at.”
We didn’t think Newcastle were that dominant last night, and couldn’t get going much in the first half, but second half was much better, with Newcastle controlling the game, and playing some good open football – and maybe the extra fitness started to tell?
Coloccini and Caetano both received red cards after about 36 minutes, but reports that Colo will miss the first Premier League game at Manchester City because of it are rather unlikely.
That’s simply because the FA tries not to ban players from competitive games, when they have been sent off in pre-season games – and that seems reasonable and even sensible.
Comments welcome.
NOTE: We are trying to help Ingo Hagemann who is an International student at Northumbria University studying for an MSc in Sports Marketing, and he’s doing a survey as part of his Masters dissertation. The survey is on the controversial sponsorship between Wonga and Newcastle and it takes only five to ten minutes to complete.
There were some problems earlier but all is OK now – please help Ingo by taking the survey here – many thanks.

Comment #96Of course we should have been the better side. Its a Prem club against a Portuguese second Division side.for Pete’s sake. Anyway, there’s nowt like a good kicking from a dirty team and a sense of injustice towards a dodgy ref to get the team-bonding going. Colo giving their lad the old ‘Argie neck massage’ makes a great photo. Looks like Spock’s ‘Vulcan Death Grip’
