The Lyon Chairman and owner Jean-Michel Aulas has today said that the French club have received three offers for their French International striker Bafetimbi Gomis.
Bafetimbi Gomis – three bids in for the striker?
And that’s not good news for Newcastle, who for one reason or another seem to have dragged their feet in bidding for the 27 year-old striker, and only yesterday the owner had said while Newcastle were interested they had not received a bid from the Tyneside club.
Football clubs are successful in the transfer market by showing stealth and speed, and unfortunately Newcastle seem to have been moving at a slow pace at best this summer – and that’s being kind.
With Newcastle’s reputation for bidding low for players, we cannot believe that our bid is the best one in there, if indeed three bids have been received by Lyon.
And Aulas confirmed that Newcastle are one of the clubs interested in the forward, but there were rumors that Tottenham Hotspur had also become interested in the striker, who has played 10 times for France.
Aulas posted the message on Twitter today, when he was asked the question – had there been any interest for Gomis – this is what Aulas tweeted:
“Yes at least 3”.
We suppose that could mean clubs just expressing an interest in the striker rather than actual bids, but we just hope that Newcastle have formally put their bid in, because yesterday had told the French channel Canal +:
“There is an interest by Newcastle for Gomis – we wait from them to come to us with an offer.”
We could be wrong, but generally the longer the chase for a good striker goes on, the more clubs will become interested – and that’s what seems to have happened here.
Newcastle must move a lot more quickly in the future, and not tell the world who we are after, if we are to get our targets through the door.
There still has to be a chance we can get Gomis to Newcastle, but the longer it goes the less chance we think Newcastle will have of getting the player. 🙁
We hope we are wrong on this.
And to end on a more positive note, we’ll have Papiss Cisse at the club next season, as he has now agreed to wear the Wonga emblem on his Newcastle shirt and training gear – that’s some good news today.
So at the moment we have Shola Ameobi and Papiss Cisse as the two recognized strikers, with Yoan Gouffran also able to play up front, and we need two more strikers this summer.
Comments welcome.
We are trying to help Ingo Hagemann who is an International student at Northumbria University studying for an MSc in Sports Marketing, and he’s doing a survey as part of his Masters dissertation. The survey is on the controversial sponsorship between Wonga and Newcastle and it takes only five to ten minutes to complete.
Please help Ingo by taking the survey here – many thanks.

I have faith in MA as a shrewd businessman, but he’s made mistakes as a football club owner
I have faith in Pardew as a manager, but he’s made mistakes as a tactician

All of our purples are referred to as purples because they’re marooned in a footballing desert!

Comment #47Our failure during this window is Ashley thinking that Kinnear would be anything other than an idiot.
The problem isn’t Pardew, or Kinnear, or any other staff member.
The problem is Ashley, so let’s direct the criticism where it should be directed.

Comment #48I read a comment on the previous thread about clubs struggling in the EL, well imo mid table clubs who get there by beating second string teams to win or lose a final over seven or eight games probably will, teams that finish fifth and with the right investment not only win the EL but go on to do very well in the CL and win Europe wide acclaim.

I don’t think he refused to wear it because he wanted a move away, it’s just strange that its been sorted without giving his real reasons why he didnt want to wear it in the first place and why he now will.

All players that are top quality starting eleven players are called “purples”. Nationality doesn´t matter.
It´s a bit weird I think it was Llambias that first mentioned “purples”.

Comment #53Forget Shola – his ineffective half a dozen games per season when he is actually fit, does not count in our situation.
If we go into the season with just Cisse and Gouffran we may as well just pack it in, or as Fraser in Dad’s Army would say, “We’re dooomed I tell ya, doomed”.
This club management and ownership is just devoid of any common sense whatsoever.

We’re all entitled to opinions, but why resort to insults and outlandish demands?
MA is actually better than Shepherd, you have a short memory.
We need one striker and one attacking player who can maybe also play striker. That’s not much to have the squad that we deserve.
How about we give the club a chance to meet our expectations? We should be targeting 7th place.

Comment #56Rotonda – yeah mate, when you look at who we are linked with and where they would play it makes sense.
Also explains why most reports RE Gomis say that no bid has been accepted, which shows we were looking, not buying.
Remy would be a great signing, but my only worry is which side would he play?
Watch any compilation video and he’s very much a right sided player. All his goals are from that side of the pitch.
Cisse wants to play in the middle, and that works but would Ben Arfa but suited on the left?
Gouffran can play there and he’s quite a decent little player, but it would mean dropping ben Arfa to the bench when everyone is fully fit.
Benny could play on the left of a front three but he’s far more dangerous cutting in onto his left and shooting or crossing in.
I fear Pards will try to accommodate by playing 4-2-3-1 and it could mean Sissokko playing on the left of the formation as he did in the last friendly.
It would look like this…
Krul
Debuchy Collo Mbiwa/Taylor Santon
Cabaye Tiote
Remy Ben Arfa Sissokko
Cisse
I also fear for Cisse playing up top on his own in that formation. Against the better teams, or any team for that matter, when we are under the cosh and Pards is telling that bank of 3 to defend, Cisse would be alone up front and he’s useless at holding it up. This might work if it was Gomis, but Cisse doesn’t have that ability.

Comment #57Don’t understand those naming a first 11 against Man City and not having Jonas in it. Have you learnt nothing from last season??
Doesn’t matter who we buy, Jonas will start the first game of the season. Pardew ALWAYS plays Jonas. Regardless of form or merit.
That will not change…unfortunately.

How long are we gonna wait for the club to meet our expectations? Please remind me the last time our club won a domestic trophy of any true value? I have had a season ticket for close to 35 years and i can remember the good days of KK producing one of the best team i have seen in black n white and i have followed them all over Europe……..still no trophies. If i have offended you then i apologies!

Comment #64When club’s like Norwich, Swansea and West Ham show more ambition than us we really should pack up and head for home.
Being run on a shoestring budget will only get us so far as if we fail (again) this summer to get the players we need, ie strikers, we may not be as lucky as we were last season

Comment #67This Gomis carry on has got the Remy saga part two written all over it.
Too lacklustre in getting in and showing the player we really want him, instead trailing at a snails pace whilst other clubs show an interest at the last minute. No wonder fans think it’s a farce and that it’s only to look as if they are going in for players.
What is the odds of us being outdone by wages now..
If we lose this lad, once again, this regime have failed NUFC.
This window has been open 6 weeks now to move in for our targets.
If I showed this kind of attidude in my job, If I treated my job in such a manner I’d be sacked.

Comment #68Instead of squabbling like children over inane rubbish, how about some comments about the article? If you want to be childish and argue over the Internet, get on twitter.
So why exactly are our hopes on gomis fading? Because a bloke whos trying to sell a player says they’ve received 3 bids? Yeah, it’s not like he’s trying to scare us into bidding. We need a striker, they need to sell, our players know him, he knows our players, pardew has admitted we want him. We’ll get him by the end of next week.

Comment #72gazza18 the colour purple is a high value casino chip. Derek Llambias ran a casino before he came to SJP. He introduced the term at the club – meaning a high value player.

Comment #80I´d be happy with just Remy.
I´m not sure Gomis is good enough.
Pardew’s pick is Bent so perhaps he´ll come in?
He does seem happy to spit the dummy and not perform so I´m apprehensive about the Mackem has been sitting on our bench for four years..
Cisse, Remy, Gouffran and Shola should see us through to January and hopefully we can scout and add another striker then.
