Graham Carr A Huge Influence In Recruiting Gomis

9:45 am, Friday, July 26th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 67 Comments

The Newcastle Journal is reporting today what is essentially good news on the drawn out saga to sign Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis.

bafetimbi gomis -lyon-2-buts_20735_w460

Bafetimbi Gomis – please sign this player

The Journal says that indeed a Newcastle bid is one of three bids received so far by Lyon for Gomis, and Newcastle are still waiting for a response to the bid.

Newcastle isreported to be the only Premier League club to have lodged a bid, although reports in France suggest that other Premier League clubs are also trying to sign Gomis.

Joe Kinnear has been working very closely with Graham Carr, Newcastle’s Chief Scout, as he tries to his arms around his new position as Director of Football at Newcastle.

Carr is known to have many contacts in France, and two non Premier league clubs could be in for Gomis, and they are Marseilles and reported interest from a club in Turkey – probably Galatasaray or Fenerbahce.

So not for the first time in the last three and a haf years, Graham Carr is playing a vital part in the drive to get a good player to Newcastle.

And the Journal are reporting that an adviser for Gomis is on his way to England to try to negotiate a deal – and we assume those negotiations will be with Newcastle.

You wouldn’t have thought that recruiting a player would be so difficult, but Newcastle proved last summer in their pursuit of Mathieu Debuchy of Lille, that it can be extremely difficult, at least for the Tyneside club, to get a top target through the door.

We hope the duo of Carr and Kinnear can get the job done for Gomis, and Newcastle should understand they will need to pay out decent money for a top player at times, and that seems to be the case with Bafetimbi Gomis.

We cannot get fantastic deals on players every single time.

What do you think?

Comments welcome – but please keep them civil.

We are trying to help Ingo Hagemann – an International MSC student in Sports Marketing at Northumbria University – who’s doing a survey on the controversial sponsorship between Wonga and Newcastle, as part of his Masters dissertation.

Please help Ingo by taking the survey here – many thanks.

  • 4 richyg01 // Jul 26, 2013 at 9:48 AM

Hopefully when his Agent gets over here (meant to be on his way), he speaks to Carr rather than JFK.

  • 5 richyg01 // Jul 26, 2013 at 9:49 AM

    @1

    Yeah, thought about it,

Problem we have is, two of them players aint in our squad.

  • 6 Tinman // Jul 26, 2013 at 9:49 AM

    jeff, Good/Dummet?

  • 7 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 26, 2013 at 9:49 AM

    Lilongwe

Neither would surprise me…didn’t realise that he’d been called up to the Dutch squad though. I can’t believe that he’ll get any games in the WC though and he’ll probably only go if there are injuries.

I was kinda surprised that Harper left but maybe they felt they they needed to give a chance to a younger keeper. I know some clubs, like Chelsea, sign older reserve keepers, but others give youth a chance.

  • 11 Tinman // Jul 26, 2013 at 9:50 AM

Lilo, it was funny how Danno was around very quickly after being called out. Seems to me like he is posting using other names as well

  • 12 Toon73 // Jul 26, 2013 at 9:51 AM

Ed we haven’t recruited anyone yet, let alone Gomis

What’s the craic then?! Remy in the jesmond?

  • 14 ToonDanno // Jul 26, 2013 at 9:53 AM

Lil- he was due to fly out on sat like Haidara did, but he didn’t for what ever reason. But me knowing there was a flight going out for players sat to join the squad surely tells you I know bit more than you think. Anyway don’t want a keyboard war so ill just talk football

do you think that might tie in with the Cisse ceasefire yesterday?
…perhaps his shirt will have a picture of the Archbishop of Canterbury over the w*nga logo?

  • 23 ToonDanno // Jul 26, 2013 at 9:57 AM

JFK alright mate? Ha no nufc don’t use jesmond anymore most talks get done on London now

  • 24 jeff // Jul 26, 2013 at 9:58 AM

i think mbiwa is our best LB and so i put santon at CB cause hes better then saylor and willo as fast as a willow tree.

so then i thought about our LBs. forgot we have one who has played in a league cup final before (HAve Any Of Our PLayers Done that before?) in Courteous Good. then i put Courteous Good in and put Mbiwa at CB. Dummet is an alright ultimatum instead of Good

  • 25 geordie157 // Jul 26, 2013 at 9:58 AM

    Get gomis in today!

Just hope we are working on several deals.

Has inman now left the club? Not heard anything to say he’s re-signed so wonder if he’s having trials elsewhere

  • 26 Rainrix // Jul 26, 2013 at 9:59 AM

Foggon… I think they should just have the wonga logo with a * at the end of it. Just below the logo should be the text “Endorsed and Regulated by God”. Is it just me or does everyone who goes up against wonga come out looking like hypocrites? Maybe god is backing them ;)

    Uncertain Toon // Jul 26, 2013 at 2:20 AM

    toonking,
Do you think any of those managers would rather not be in Europe?

And if they even had that fleeting thought of unambitious negativity they’d spout it every week to any reporter who’d listen?

The only manager on that list you could compare Pardew to is Pulis mate. Like peas in a pod, play gash unattractive football with anyone in any position and then blame everyone and everything but themselves when the wheels come off!

If you can tell me/anyone Pardews value to our/any Premiership club i’m all ears pal.

Although I do think he’s being mistreated by upstairs so do feel a slight bit of ‘sorry’ for him.

However the only reason he is hanging around is because he knows in his heart of hearts that he will never get a job as big as this one!

are you guys mentally retart or handicap?

mourini said santon can be the next maldini.guess where maldini played.CB yep he played CB.CB = centre back, Tsunki.Saw you asking that question the other day

mourini thinks santon can be a CB as maldini was a CB

i think i would respect more of mourinis judge ment then your own, bloggers, no offense

  • 39 gentle09 // Jul 26, 2013 at 10:08 AM

Jeff – Do you mean Mourinho??

Anyway Santon is a good fullback who self admittedly needs to work on his defending as this is his weakness. If he can do this he will be a very good fullback if not then he will probably end up in midfield, but a CB he is not or never will be. Anyone who watches NUFC on a regular basis would know this!

  • 40 GenralHez // Jul 26, 2013 at 10:08 AM

Great news on your tests Ed.
In 6 months we could be top of the premiership with Stroller as top scorer in the league and we could have signed someone.
On the other hand Stroller may have hung up his boots and we could not get anyone over the line.
Anyway keep up the good work and best wishes.

  • 44 Clematis // Jul 26, 2013 at 10:11 AM

Hey, Jeff – why don’t we sign Colback? He’d do a good job at right back, wouldn’t he? Maybe Debuchy could come on once Colback had ensured the game was safe. Likewise, we could sell Cabaye and pick up Larrson or Cattermole to inject some verve into the toon.

  • 45 xx sum ting wong xx // Jul 26, 2013 at 10:12 AM

Big Pappa is a convicted peodo

  • 46 JFK junior // Jul 26, 2013 at 10:12 AM

Danno – That would make sense.

It is right that there were some massive bets being placed in London on Remy > NUFC and that’s what led to the betting prices being slashed?!

Apparently it was in the mid-late 100′s of pounds being bet.

  • 47 xx sum ting wong xx // Jul 26, 2013 at 10:13 AM

I bet Jeff is well pissed off. He knows I’m not him

  • 48 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 26, 2013 at 10:13 AM

    Jeff
    Retart is not a word
mourinis is not a real person
Comparing maldini’s style of play at LB doesn’t translate into he could play CB

And heads up for future line up suggestions shola is not a GK in case you were tempted

  • 49 Big Pappa Cissé // Jul 26, 2013 at 10:13 AM

Santon is one of the fastest players we have and would be wasted at CB. Wanting him to play there shows me Jeff’s football knowledge

  • 50 gentle09 // Jul 26, 2013 at 10:15 AM

JFK Junior – I wouldn’t read too much into the betting odds, they’re manipulated. Three weeks ago we were certain to be signing Scott Sinclair.

Please give this up, Santon is not/never will be a CB!

“So not for the first time in the last three and a haf years, Graham Carr is playing a vital part in the drive to get a good player to Newcastle.”

Newcastle United were looking at Gomis long before Carr was here. As I recall, Keegan went over to France to scout him when he was at St Etienne and Kinnear was trying to sign him after Keegan left too along with one or two others such as Stephane Mbia.
