The news today is that Lyon want a ridiculously high €10M (£8.5M) for their striker Bafetimbi Gomis plus a €2M (£1.7M) bonus, that Newcastle United must cough up to land Bafetimbi Gomis – according to reports in France.
Bafetimbi Gomis – Lyon want over £8.5M for striker with one year left on contract
As we reported this morning L’Equipe are saying that Lyon President is asking a ridiculous price for his striker, who could be picked up as a free agent in less than twelve months.
There’s no way Newcastle should pay that amount out for Gomis, and if Lyon will not come to their senses, then Newcastle should turn to some other targets – like Loic Remy for example.
Remy is available for around £8M, which is what Newcastle bid for him in January, when he decided to join QPR at the very last moment for more money.
There seems no reason why Newcastle cannot try to push through a deal for Remy, and still monitor the situation at Lyon, since we need two strikers brought through the door this summer, not just one.
We don’t blame Newcastle for being held up on this particular transfer, if the news being reported in L’Equipe is accurate, and after failing to turn up for a meeting with Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas yesterday, the whereabouts of Gomis is unknown.
We wonder if he’s following Ben Arfa’s example and getting on a flight to Newcastle? 😀
Certainly he has made his representatives know that Newcastle is his preferred destination.
But if there is an impasse with Gomis – let’s go after Loic Remy and get this lad signed up – soon.
What do you think?

Comment #41ruddy, depends where are coming from in France. There are limited options between NCL and France.
It’s all speculation anyway.
I saw alleged quotes re. Goofy being 1 of our main strikers for 13/14
Would not put it past them now Shola and Cisse are no on the move

the goofy being one of our main strikers is true buddy.
pards has gone public with how well goofy has played as a striker and said next season he will add more goals.
and yes looks like shola is staying (unfortunatly) although personally i dont even like the thought of us having him as an option.

Comment #46It’s rather a good thing is Goofy is one of our main striker coz he really is… make sure Pardew use him as a proper striker.

We’d agreed a fee for Remy, a deal was all but sealed and at the 11th hour the deal was dead.
So I think I’ll stick to my method.

Comment #54What on earth’s going on, or seemingly not going on. Ok, they’re Ed’s words ‘….but then Newcastle should turn to some other targets – like Loic Remy for example.’
Should turn to other targets? Thought we were active in bringing Remy in! If we’re not, then somebody should be sacked. It must occur that as time passes by and our options become limited then prices and demands will rise.
Can we have Llambias back to get players over the line. It’s clear that Kinnear can’t cope and it’s really time for him to get his pipe and put his feet up. Retirement must seem like an attractive proposition – although Mrs K might have some reservations about him mooching around the housr£

Comment #57Yeah we should get least one of Rhodes and Austin.
We know Austin you can get at 3.5 m £ even is his should might be a ticking clock. With Faye fitness fixes he’s going to be fine. Worth the gamble in my opinion as 4 th striker.
Rhodes going to be 10 m £ but he’s only 23 years old. Even if he flops we could recoup most of it.

I’v debated this a few times over the past 3 months in regards to Benny.
The arguments were has he really produced enough, 10 assists and 11 goals or so in 56-57 appearances in his attacking role.
Obviously injuries played a big part in that. If he is fit he is the best player at the Toon, another season like last though and it’s not worth it through my eyes.
It’s all good having him, but if he is not on the park what good is he? Can’t see this messing on with signings helping his decision either, he spoke about the lack of ambition before the January window.
The Toon need to be careful with him I think.

Comment #59I do agree that Gouffran is a central striker first and foremost, whether he’s good enough is another thing. Remy to play primarily on the left of a front three, with Gouffran as a back up utility striker seems the way to go. Gomis, the 2nd priority, but both would be splendid and enough to rekindle my hopes, which are frankly almost dashed as things stand.

Agree totally about “The Shola Option” from the bench pal. The thought worries the feck out of me. Pardew might have rebriefed himself and wants to change his style of play, but after 60 mins when we’re 1-0 up………. You know what I mean mate. I’d definitely pop a rivet if I see that debacle occur again!

Well I suppose getting Gomis through the door would be a positive, even if I’d rather a different type of striker, at least it’s one more ST between the first XI and Shola.

Yeah, I’d like a Remy type too. But we do need a physical presence upfront.

Comment #69in a perfect world i would say cisse and remy as i think they have a better chance than anyone to link together imo ! with a second force of gomis and goofy for cover and to change things around.
but the 4 of those would have a great deal of versatility to deal with most formations and we would still have cover for international compititions.

Comment #70Appears we’re at a crossroads in our purchase of Gomis with the club only prepared to offer 6m and lyon demanding 10m.
It also seems we’re trying to get Bent for 6m and villa want 8m.
Could of had Aubameyang if we were prepared to pay what it takes, granted Dortmund would appeal to any player plus they’re in the champions league. Then theres Bony who went to swansea because they paid what was required.
We arent going to get a top striker for 6m.
I hope we don’t get left behind, while other clubs strengthen.

Aye, Benny’s stats don’t look to clever really, but I think the injuries or moreover the recovery from injuries have a lot of bearing. How many times have we seen him and thought he’s not match fit and then thought, hang on, he’s not even fit?! Fingers crossed that Faye bird can sort him out. I agree about being careful with him as he’s proved if he wants to go he’ll go.
I’d love to see him have a belter this season and watch him in world cup. He’d probably have to make up with that Deschamps bloke, don’t know how that would go!
Pardew seems to have the knack about handling him and keeping him happy.

Comment #77Mole, we pretty much had PEA all wrapped up by all accounts from France, including his club. It was even reported that our financial package was better than dortmunds, both fee and wages but he always said he would make the right decision for football reasons not financial, and he did so have to respect the lad for that. As you said Dortmund would appeal to any player over us.

Aye it’s a tricky one with Benny, It looks like we are keeping him this window so I’d tie him down rather than let him walk if he becomes disillusioned next year.
I think he has matured alot since coming to Newcastle, he has had bad fall outs over in France before he came here. Time will tell I suppose on that one.
I’d love to see him play in the world cup though.
It’s going to be interesting watching our French imports next year, well, so long as they are still here that is haha.
I need to get some work done mate so i’ll catch up with ya soon 😉

Comment #8021 goals in 50 odd appearances for benny are pretty bloody good stats when you think of how stop start his time here has been!?
just imagine wat kinda things he could achieve with a full season we haven’t even had that yet or even close?
this is the season i prey that he tares this league up with no injuries!
