The news today is that Lyon want a ridiculously high €10M (£8.5M) for their striker Bafetimbi Gomis plus a €2M (£1.7M) bonus, that Newcastle United must cough up to land Bafetimbi Gomis – according to reports in France.
Bafetimbi Gomis – Lyon want over £8.5M for striker with one year left on contract
As we reported this morning L’Equipe are saying that Lyon President is asking a ridiculous price for his striker, who could be picked up as a free agent in less than twelve months.
There’s no way Newcastle should pay that amount out for Gomis, and if Lyon will not come to their senses, then Newcastle should turn to some other targets – like Loic Remy for example.
Remy is available for around £8M, which is what Newcastle bid for him in January, when he decided to join QPR at the very last moment for more money.
There seems no reason why Newcastle cannot try to push through a deal for Remy, and still monitor the situation at Lyon, since we need two strikers brought through the door this summer, not just one.
We don’t blame Newcastle for being held up on this particular transfer, if the news being reported in L’Equipe is accurate, and after failing to turn up for a meeting with Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas yesterday, the whereabouts of Gomis is unknown.
We wonder if he’s following Ben Arfa’s example and getting on a flight to Newcastle? 😀
Certainly he has made his representatives know that Newcastle is his preferred destination.
But if there is an impasse with Gomis – let’s go after Loic Remy and get this lad signed up – soon.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Comment #161Ive never heard of that lad or seen links with us and him.
And there would be nothing wrong with sticking cisse on the bench if we were replacing him with hernandez, fella’s a top 4 striker in my opinion, really is quality.

Comment #162Luque,
No disrespect to Cisse mate but if i’m honest i’d rather have Hernandez i think.
Mister Tuff,
Every time I see ‘El Gourdo’ used on here it makes me giggle like a school kid! As geordies we do come up with some classic names for people. Don’t think it’s just us however I think it’s footie in general. Best one I’ve heard in the last few years is from my chelsea pal saying ‘FSW’. Didn’t have a scooby what he was on about and when he texted it’s ‘Fat Spanish Waiter’ I totally creased up. We can’t lose our sense of humour can we? If we lose that we’re done for!

Comment #164i wonder if he could buy his contract out and we could give him it back with the signing on fee, if 20k pw its only a million for the remainder. much better than paying 10 or 8 or 3.
i am sure there will be a law against it but if i met some guy who knew gomis in a pub and suggested it to him we couldnt get caught.

Comment #165on hernandez he’s only really been used as an impact sub by fergie so ya can’t really compare him to cisse
if i was him i’d want to move and get more game time especially this year

With Nathaniel Chalobah its just talks on going and it was mentioned as loan with option to buy If that makes any sense. But he would most likely be sent back on loan to build his experience. But nothing is final on him just yet.

Comment #170Thats why i said most likely we will loan him back out as why should we loan a player in the first place from a league below? You misunderstood me. Anyway i am off, but lets see what will happen in next few daha 😉

Comment #171Well the Chalobah thing is a load of tosh, as he is a Chelsea play, on loan at Watford. I dont think we will be signing gomis anytime soon either the things have been going on recently.

Comment #173uncertain — some of the lads on here were referring to Ashley as being fat -so I tried to think of a decent nick name. Years ago I used to work with a fat bloke whose nickname was “gros hombre”. So when I was checking out this I stumbled onto El Gourdo -meaning the fat man. sounded just right for Ashley

Comment #175Mister Tuff,
Didn’t realise you came up with it, Kudos due there mate. You should of copyrighted it as i’m sure i’ve seen others use it on here!
I’ve looked at all the toon blogs over probably the last 10 years and this is the one I decided to join.
I would describe it(on a good day) as a nice blend of intellectual toon debate coupled with humorous side portions. More of a papajohns than a dominos!
Tis easy to understand how people get angry with whats going on at the club and i’m sure other team blogs get the same way. I do find it a real shame though when people feel they can’t contribute anymore due to unwarranted abuse/argy bargy. Torq is probably a perfect example of this. I suppose some peoples’ skins are thicker than others. I think more humour is required to get us through this rough toon patch. John tudor tries his best but half them don’t get it, too dry maybe.

Comment #176ED – Only just seen the health update- Great news! Hope the good results keep coming!
Long live the blog!
~~~~~~
In other news- still really don’t want Gomis!
That is if we actually sign anyone!
I always thought we would make one first team signing like last summer which I thought would be a striker for about the same price as Anita (~5m).
Now I’m not even sure we’ll get that incredibly mediocre result….
Then again, if Ben Arfa stays fit this season then we’ll still have a good season- that’s how good I think he can be.
Comment #177I wish if we could bid for Karim Benzema, he is my dream striker and could well settle in quickly with the amount of French contingency we have.
Comment #178@Tubai – IF we’re talking dream signings then my favourite would be Rooney.
People are exaggerating saying he has gone downhill in the last couple years- there were a few games last season (Despite being played CM!) where he still looked brilliant and was getting loads of praise. Now, as soon as there are rumours of a transfer he’s been ‘awful’ all season!
So fickle.
Anyway, that volley he scored against us. Just amazing.
Comment #179Going some of this gomis talk is true and he is signed by close of play Monday. I like the idea of Austin 4-5 mill, but I don’t think Blackburn will accept 10 mill for Rhodes unless the player wants out and forces a move.
The chalobah link is rubbish, there is no way Chelsea would sell him and I doubt we’d loan him either. I still think Harry Maguire would be a good addition and then we could offload Williamson
Comment #183Chicharito would be excellent, thing is I feel he thrives with proper service from his midfielders.
Lucky for us, we have just that in Jonas and Obertan.
Comment #184Morning lads!
So a month into the transfer window and more than two month after the season ended Newcastle realize that Gomis is too expensive for them?
…we never learn do we; we could have find this out a long time ago. And Gomis is suppose to be one of our main targets (we haven’t even bid for anyone yet only vague rumors of a bid for PEA)
Comment #187Ideally I wouldn’t want the greed and drama (conviction) around remy but he is probably exactly the wide forward player we need to compete with Gouffran and back up to HBA. We finished 5th bottom and beggars can’t be choosers.
If we got remy (I don’t think we’re even in for him) then gomis would give us the muscle we need to drop sissoko back into CM.
I do think however that we need more english lads so bent would’ve ideal from that point of view.
Comment #188On goals per game – it can be a misleading stat, as it doesn’t account for sub appearance in or out. Far better to use minutes playered v goals scored.
Comment #189Spuggy…I don’t know who we are after, but I sometimes question whether there are more than one maybe two players for each position on our shortlist.
…and we we don’t get that player then what happened last season will happen (and it is happening as we speak)
Comment #190Im thinking, if remy is too risky, bent/gomis are too expensive at 6m and a ridiculous 12 for Gomis, surely a cheeky 15m for Hernandez is worth a punt? Hes gonna want to play regular with the world cup, give him assurances of first team and a decent wage, around 65k with bonuses we could get him.
Theres your prem experience pards.
Plus hes mexican not french and speaks English already.
I’ve said so so many times but Hernandez could well be the best CF fit for NUFC
He’s simply fantastic, he has everything and would thrive in this team!
Comment #193@gonufc, hey mate but i think benzema is an out&out striker and rooney lacks that goal scoring spree and also he is most often played in the no.10 role behind the striker, so that’s the reason i would prefer benzema to rooney as a striker atleast.
