There’s a report from Alan Oliver in the Sunday People today, that Newcastle have made inquiries about Sunderland full-back Phil Bardsley, who has been allowed to leave Sunderland this summer by new manager Paolo Di Canio.
Phil Bardsley – Sunderland full-back
And the report says that Joe Kinnear is lining up his first signing for Newcastle – Phil Bardsley – and that he has also expressed an interest in Sunderland’s Lee Cattermole and Connor Whickham.
Alan Oliver, the former Chronicle reporter for Newcastle, must be pulling our leg – surely.
All three players can leave the club, and while the People’s reporting is not always accurate on north-east matters, we just cannot believe Newcastle would be interested in the 28 year-old Scottish International and former Manchester United player.
Phil is simply a mediocre player who’s played 167 times with 7 goals since being signed from the Red Devils in January, 2008 for around £1.5M, and he’s not a player Newcastle should be interested in.
Newcastle have full-backs like Mathieu Debuchy, Davide Santon, Yanga-Mbiwa, Massadio Haidara and Paul Dummett for the full back positions, so we just don’t think Newcastle are interested in Bardsley.
And Lee Cattermole is too much of a loose cannon on the field, and he goes into late tackles far too often because of his lack of speed, and picks up too many yellow and red cards, and we have a central midfielder who picks up too many cautions already on Newcastle’s books – Cheick Tiote.
The report says Newcastle have made tentative inquiries for Bardsley – so let’s hope they are very tentative.
Newcastle were interested in 20 year-old England U21 International Connor Newton two years ago when he was at Ipswich, but the £8M signing just hasn’t come through at Sunderland as expected, and he has played only 31 times for Sunderland with two goals in two seasons, although he’s still only 20, and could still develop into a top player down the line.
What do you think?

Comment #41I’m surprised arfa can release breath, how greedy is he. He put on a one man skills show against arsenal to show wenger what he can do. If I was manager that day I would have been going mental.
Why can’t he pass a ball and then move?

Comment #46Agreed Ed. Why buy a 28 year old from the scum as back-up? Some hack has thought that all the news has been about various strikers so he wouldn’t get any coverage there…and somewhere down our list of priorities would be a right back…so let’s make this up!
If we do sign a right back (and we have Santon, Saylor, Raylor, Anita and Tav to cover here) then it will be a younger player.
I can imagine the Sunday headlines…”Bardsley seen in Newcastle – expected to sign tomorrow!”

Totally agree on HBA. with his talent he could easily be a world class no 10. But he need to play with his team mates a lot more to do that.

Comment #49To be honest, as cheap squad cover, I’d have Bardsley. Solid enough, and has played at Prem level on both flanks. Would prefer to have kept Danny, but with Raylor out, Danny gone and Tav out on loan we are a bit short there.
Wouldn’t mind Wickham either at the right price, I’d say 4 million for the pair is about right. Wickham still has potential. He was chucked in at the deep end at Sunderland and sunk, a lower profile move now as a squad player may work in his favour. Better than Sammi…

Comment #50Mind you, that Mbabu plays right back as well, so he is potentially the future for that slot and he may be integrated this year although I’d prefer a loan for him.

Comment #51Tbh Debuchy has a lot to prove this season as he was off the pace last season and very erratic when caught out for pace

Ha i like 2 say it the way it is, sum shit wrote on here all the same, some bloggers on here would rather we’d sign a 5 or 6 million teenage full back 2 sit on the bench rather than sign a decent full back in his late 20’s 4 around 1 million, i kno which i’d b going 4, i’m just another Irish Newcastle Mad fan, the blog has took over my summer lol

You think the fans will accept sub-rate ex-mackems in our squad? Why would we want them if they don’t?
We don’t need a 28 year old low PL/championship level RB as cover instead and if the mackems don’t feel Wickham has potential to be a PL striker then he’s hardly likely to get any games for us.
No thank you…I’ll stick to 1 top striker and another striker/attacking midfielder please.

Comment #57I can’t believe that some fans are so desperate to sign people that they’re wanting sub-rate players and sometimes for huge money! First it was Rhodes (for £10M!), then Austin, now this lot!
I really want us to sign some players, but honestly, I’d rather stick with Cisse, Goofy, Ameobi and Campbell up front and keep our powder dry for January than sign any of these players.

Def wouldnt take Cattermole cos he’s a complete cnut and we hav enuf in his position, def wouldn’t take Wickham either cos we need better strikers than him but i’d hav Bardsley in a heartbeat, look at any game we’ve played the Scum and he’s been playing, he’s always put in a solid shift and would b cheap back up 2 either flank

We can’t wait until January as we desperately need strikers in now, but we need quality strikers in. Just hope our penny pinching ways don’t see us miss out on the likes of Gomis, or Remy on loan as going through till the next window with Cisse, Gouffran, Shola and Campbell is no where near enough

Don’t u think that Jordan Rhodes would b a good signing? He’s a real goal machine, can’t believe he hasn’t been snapped up by a premiership team, Blackburn paid 8m or so 4 him so he prob would b around 10m but if he’s gonna score 15 to 20 goals a season he’d b worth it

Are they trying to say something: take out a Wonga loan to buy to by football tickets.
A no its a free country but find it rather sad that Wonga are advertising on this site after all the stink that has been kicked up lately

Comment #68As a defender Bardsley would be a good cheap signing as back up. Last season we were exposed a hell of alot at RB due to Debs getting forward, he hardly pulled up any trees and this season he has to prove himself imo.

Why do we want them if they don’t?
Urm maybe because there manager has blown the squad apart and he will take them down IMO. Cattermole is a boro lad, has no connection to the Mackems apart from taking the cash from them. He’s better than tiote. The lad has been terrible.

Comment #71The article linked us with Bardsley and said Sunderland have interest in Cattermole & Whickham from championship club QPR. I initially misread it too as Toon interest as it’s not wrote very well.
