News this morning in L’Equipe that Newcastle have decided to walk away from the deal to get 27 year-old striker Bafetimbi Gomis to Tyneside from Lyon.
Bafetimbi Gomis – Newcastle end pursuit
This is the report in L’Equipe this morning:
“After seeing their latest offer of eight million euros rejected by Lyon for the transfer of Bafé Gomis (27 years, under contract until 2014), Newcastle have decided to halt negotiations. The Magpies should continue discussions with QPR for the loan of the French international striker Loic Remy.”
A similar French report is also in le10sport.com saying Newcastle have ended the negotiations for Gomis.
The last report from L’Equipe yesterday afternoon was that although Lyon had rejected Newcastle’s latest bid of £6.9M, the Magpies were still negotiating and the two sides were getting closer on the fee.
But now it seems that Newcastle (Mike Ashley) have decided the fee is too much, and have walked away from the deal – and will now pursue Loic Remy from QPR, who is said to be available for about what Newcastle offered for Gomis – £6.8M.
A couple of points on this – L’Equipe have been wrong before on some of their reporting (hope springs eternal), and Newcastle ending the negotiations could simply be a ploy to get Lyon to lower their demands, and that could become true if no other club comes in for the 27 year-old.
Bit the danger is another club will come in and meet the required fee for Gomis, and then the question would be whether Gomis would agree to join that club, since his stated preference has always been Newcastle United this summer.
We may get some additional news on this today.
What do you think?

Comment #42Lyon are just being sensible and trying to get as much money as possible for the player.
They will continue to ask for high fee until the transfer window is almost closed and will no doubt then accept a lower offer to avoid losing him on a free in January. I’m afraid with deals like this you need to be patient or simply pay over the odds, something Ashley won’t ever do.
If we do get remy soon we can afford to play the waiting game with Lyon but the longer it goes without is getting another striker the longer Lyon will be in a strong position negotiating with us.

A lot of deals for attacking players have a bonus structure built in to them, based on trophies won, goals scored, appearances, international recognition, European qualification etc.
Nothing unusual with that. 12 million as a total spend for Gomis is ludicrous though. Lyon have already said he will leave this window, so have shot themselves in the foot from a negotiating standpoint. We know Ashley is unlikely to budge, so we have to hope that no one else bids the requested amount, or, Aulas isn’t as hard nosed as Lille’s chairman was over Debuchy.
We will see. Anyway, Fernandes tweeted yesterday 4 were likely to leave QPR with 2 going on loan, so let’s hope one is Remy to us.

Comment #45Alus is in fantasyland, probably hoping one of the madly rich clubs come in for Gomis for £ Gazzillions. If Gomis wants to join the Toon then we can wait to sign him pre- contract at Xmas for zippo fee. Meantime a decent loan striker will do as long as we buy another striker.

He is proven and will get at least 15 goals

Comment #50Jack, they are takin the p, but sometimes, if theres nowhere left to turn, u have to pay the premium rate or pay the price.
Its not like we’re paying 10 or 15 million more than hes worth.
It’s just not good enough at all. Keeping the same joke of a manager, bringing in JFK who if u suggested that someone prior to signing wud have just laughed it off as a joke. Now, we don’t get any signings in. I fear for us next year even more.

Comment #54@43 Lil – I always thought the bonus system was at the discretion of the buyer not the seller..anyways thanks for the heads up.
It’s a 2 edged sword, if Mr Lyon holds out with an inflated price until the close of the window, good chance Clubs will have done their spending by then, except us of course..:|

I don’t think that Herandez is either stupid enough or desperate enough to come here.
At this point in time we are nothing more than a two bit club with a market trader of an owner, a used car salesman as a Director of Football and a professional gimp as a manager

Comment #56Is Matri still at Juventus? There were rumours in Jan that we were looking at him, and they have bought Llorente and Tevez in this summer, so surely Matri won’t be starting too many, what with Quagirella, Vucinic and Giovinco there as well.
He has played for Italy before, is he close to being in the National team, if so would he be wanting a move to push for a World Cup spot? Ignore this if he has already moved this summer though….. 🙂
He cannit see man

Comment #57I can’t see this being the end of the ‘Gomis’ saga by a long shot.
Just one summer I’d like for us to not have a transfer saga, just one, is it too much to ask?

Ashley will never pay the asking price for Gomis no matter how bad a place we are in, Lyon will back down over their asking price otherwise they will lose the player for half of what we have offered in Janueary or for nothing at the end of the season.

Comment #66Sorry guys but you really cannot blame us for walking away on this one. The fact that Lyon want to sell but are not being negotiable to our two realistic bids is a joke, and as for the “ad-ons” it is just blackmail!! And to be perfectly honest is Gomis really £10m worth of player or are we showing signs of desperation!!
Moving forward I can see us getting Remy

Comment #70Im under the influence we should not even be in this position.
We have had more than enough time to identify, plan and bring in our targets.
With all the turmoil this past 6 weeks we have just started apparantly putting in bids. It’s unreal really.
We are scraping the barrel and can’t even sign them up without taking forever and a day. Gomis and Remy are not being touted by all the top four clubs around the world, they are what is left that is half decent this window who is available. Basically, the sh1t.
We have missed the boat once again and now we are sat gambling playing mind games waiting on a club to lower their fee. As if we are a club that should be in this position?
The books are levelled off, we have money to spend, so spend it.
What’s the problem.. It’s not as if we are paying 5-10 million over the top here. It’s 1-5- 2 mil max and they will accept.
You would think we didn’t really need these players, that is what their ambition and lack of urgency suggests.
Narcs the life out of me.
It’s the clubs money not Mikes, show some ambition.
There is no excuses anymore for penny pinching, the books are sorted.
Give us what we need.

Comment #71‘Shola’s been banging them in during pre-season and is looking as sharp as I’ve ever seen him, Gouffran has also looked very sharp when I’ve played him as a centre forward and is like having a new player. Cisse has agreed to wear the sponsor on his shirt and we also have young Adam Campbell to come through so not being able to get any deals for strikers over the line isn’t such a bad thing as we are looking pretty good with what we already have. We’ll simply keep our powder dry and see what happens in January.
‘I can’t ask any more of Joe of Mike as they both did everything to get me the players I wanted but deals for striker are very complicated and we simply couldn’t get any of them over the line, but it was not for the want of trying.’
Not word for word but expect something along those line’s for Pardew as he’s led out like a lamb to the slaughter

BVB will get Probs 25 mill for Lewandowski, who is also in the last year of his contract.
But, they know they will get more money if he does well in UCL and then even if he goes for free they would get more.

Cheers mate, I do enjoy life out here, and the academy keeps me sane in between my actual paid employment!
On a completely unrelated matter, I was just checking some info and figures from last season to see how important players were. One figure that stood out to me was that Steven Taylor made only 16 tackles in his 25 appearances, 0.6 a game. Hatem Ben Arfa made 18 tackles in 19 appearances at 0.9 a game. In fact, out of outfield players who made at least 10 starts, only Marveaux made less tackles per game then Stevie Taylor….
