Maybe Newcastle Should Go After This Experienced Striker

5:42 pm, Tuesday, July 30th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 68 Comments

With Newcastle looking like they may be running out of striker options in the transfer window, wouldn’t Salmon Kalou, the former Chelsea striker, be a good buy for around £3M?

Salomon Kalou -Lille1

Salomon Kalou – worth an inquiry

That’s the price that West Ham are supposed to be prepared to offer for the 6’1″ 57 times capped Ivory Coast striker (21 goals), according to L’Equipe.

And Kalou turns 28 early next month,  and it looks like Spanish club Valencia could be moving in fast  for the striker, according to Sky Sports this afternoon.

Kalou left Chelsea for Lille on a free transfer last summer, and last season in the French league he played 37 times for Lille and scored 16 goals with 6 assists.

But the big problem with this player could be his wage demands, and we suppose they would not fit into Newcastle’s fairly restrictive wage limits.

But the fee would not be large, and this lad has already proven he can score goals in the Premier League, and while at Chelsea he played 251 games for the London club and scored 60 goals but also had 40 assists.

We must get a top striker though the door this summer, and that can be Loic Remy (even if it’s only on loan) or Bafetimbi Gomis, but either of those plus Salomon Kalou would be good.

What we’d really like to see is both Remy and Gomis through the door this summer, but the chances of that happening seem to be very low at the moment.

Surely at least an inquiry to Lille and Kalou’s representatives would be worthwhile?

Over yo you Joe Kinnear.

Anyone besides Carl Cort is an improvement on Shola.

But no. I don’t like him.

  • 2 shanghai fan // Jul 30, 2013 at 5:45 PM

Right now, we don’t have a Kalou 🙂 (actually not too worried about no signings yet, sure we’ll a few in soon)

  • 3 Markaccus // Jul 30, 2013 at 5:46 PM

Last year would have been the time. He is a decent player. Quick and knows where the net is. Would have been worth some extra wages. Missed the boat on this one, as high wages and a fee will no doubt be out of the question

Kalou is done imo, has nothing to offer us.

You can make unlimited transfers until 11.30 on the first day of the season. So it’s probably worth picking your team now so it’s registered and you’ve at least got a team if you forget…then you can make as many changes as you want as late as that morning in case there are some exciting transfers in.

The Journal says that JFK is now looking to meet with Darren Bents advisors! Does this mean he’s about to make a ‘ phone call after all these weeks… this space ! After all he knows everyone in football, doesn’t he ?

  • 10 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 30, 2013 at 5:54 PM

We want hungry players with something to prove, not players dropping down the football chain to keep the money coming in…

  • 11 lesh // Jul 30, 2013 at 5:55 PM

Must say I too get the feeling that Ashley’s setting the club for an attempt at selling. Maybe not an active, high profile sale but I suspect he’d be open to sensible offers.

Why do J say that? There’s been no major outlay on players thus window, the squad’s costs are being reduced through sales, contract ends and outgoing loans.

JfK’s appointment spoke volumes and I’d guess he’ll be on a relatively low paid fixed-term or easily terminated contract so as not to lace a new owner with that particular overhead on the books.

As far as incoming players are concerned, if we see loans coming in (loanees would be a revenue expense on the books, rather than a capital one… I think), maybe that may add weight to a potential sale.

So, where to? In any event, we must get behind the ream and the manager – after all, the more successful the team, the more attractive we could be to a potential buyer. We certainly don’t need protests or demonstrations of disatisfaction – we don’t want a potential buyer not being keen on buying hostile supporters!

Fingers crossed and hope for a good season this year.

On that note, I’m getting into the cellar before the bombs start flying toward me!!

he still has to pay pardew and his cronies off – all on 8 year contracts

  • 13 lesh // Jul 30, 2013 at 5:58 PM

Rotonda of course you’re right and there’s nowt can be done about them. Somebody’ll have to honour or pay them up.

  • 14 toonking // Jul 30, 2013 at 5:58 PM

I’ve seen a few posts saying that it was when we changed 4-3-3 into 4-4-2 that it cost us the CL well i think you need to check your history books because it was during that 10 game unbeaten streak we were using 4-4-2. the team was
    simmo saylor colo raylor
    marvo cabaye Guthrie Jonas
    ba best
then things change at city and we started going 4-5-1
    simmo saylor colo raylor
    HBA cabaye Guthrie Jonas

when we played united in January we went back to 4-4-2 and got a couple of wins but then things changed against Fulham and we went 4-2-3-1 and lost 5-2

if i am lying about any of this then the official Newcastle site is lying too.

as for the champions league itself well even if we did finish 4th we still would not be allow to have played in the CL as Chelsea took that spot.

  • 15 Rotonda heights // Jul 30, 2013 at 5:59 PM

Why the obsession with Bent? He’s the same player as Cisse without the stunning goals. They can’t play together it’s obvious. Bent is injury prone and has lost his pace due to it.

  • 16 Rotonda heights // Jul 30, 2013 at 6:01 PM

not sure who’s culpable – the buyer / seller?

  • 17 lesh // Jul 30, 2013 at 6:02 PM

Rotunda. I’m not sure we’re seeing an obsession with Bent, but desperation in action – have we any options left?

  • 18 geordie157 // Jul 30, 2013 at 6:03 PM

in terms of a target man type of player to replace Shola, i’m actually low on suggestions.

  • 19 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 30, 2013 at 6:03 PM

We might aswell Ed, we have bid and run for everyone else! 😉

Seems we still havn’t decided who we want here..

Sporadic bids in for players for fun.

    Lol, what they doing?

There gambling again and we all know how that normally affects are season.

Players are starting to speak up, it’s in danger of damaging morale just like last summer going into the new season for the players.

I really don’t know why they do it. So unprofessional.

Any links at all for the game? Tv, radio?

  • 20 viv // Jul 30, 2013 at 6:05 PM

The longer the pre-season goes on the more desperate the quality of players we are linked with.

  • 21 lesh // Jul 30, 2013 at 6:05 PM

Rotonda that’d be negotiable I guess.

You never know, a new owner might thing that Pards is the best thing since sliced bread and insist he and his cronies are included in the deal.

Well, it is possible I suppose…..?

  • 22 Rooster // Jul 30, 2013 at 6:08 PM

Same pattern right through, we will no doubt be looking to getting Gomis in January when the cost goes down, we follow a pattern at NUFC, its pure business but it is awful day after day when we get the trying to get them over the line patter. may be the most frustrating “so far” transfer window I can remember and that’s saying something, we need a few bedded in before the season starts, Pardew has already stated how shola n Jonas are vita!?!? aaarrrgghhh, iknow how MA does business normally, I got it wrong sayin 3/4 would be in in the window, of course someone may come in, but the hardball tactics, make it so hard for us to stomach as fans, its bad enough for me so it must be worse again for the fans who detest MA, I can understand that totally, it has pe.d me off no end this window like no other, every day there is a wee bit of hope of a signing, followed by a kick in the stones, at this moment in time I cannot trust our team or Manager, we on paper have very good players but I have no faith that AP can utilise them positively on the pitch, its all going to be the good the bad and the ugly I just cannot see consistency with the way Pardew sets the team up, at this moment I am not particulary looking forward to the new campaign, just get a few over the line for god sake, and stop big upping the likes of shola n Jonas, you nerk, Pardew!!

  • 26 Black and White with an army lol // Jul 30, 2013 at 6:09 PM

we have loads of options concerning players coming through, the main problem is that that fat greedy bastard MA won’t get any players in, he’s a billionaire who can’t afford a few million on top players within the range of about 5-14 million, instead as i said before he will go for rejects with no sale on value until he sells the club leaving the new chairmen with no profit to receive when selling current players and bringing in new players

kalou is s%&t imo always was always will be.

niang looks a very good prospect and expect him in along the lines of santon tbh ad high price dev player but good enough to go into 1st team (even though last season was a poor one for him)

that 22yo nigerian nwafor looks a better option though as he’s more ready to come straight into first team.

There was no denying we thought that business genius Mike Mashley may have just got it right with his shrewd investments even though we got lucky with a lack of injuries to our threadbare defence, unfortunately that’s all it was just luck and there was no magic formula and a drive to take us forward just a plan that was being made up as they went along, the saddest part is that there was money to be spent when it was to save us from relegation and doing my least favourite phrase “a Leeds” , why could money be spent to save an investment instead of progressing it.

Ps I have stuck up for MA many times, he protects his investments the way he does business, and in his retail world fine, in the football arena with thouthands of fans waiting on the next word it can be soul destroying, just like this transfer window and to an extent the last summer window as well, hope things have been taken on board enough???/ if not he is in for a tidal wave of abuse and dissatisfaction and I aint sticking up for him this time.

  • 60 niafron // Jul 30, 2013 at 6:30 PM

    Bonsoir messieurs.

Lads, tonight is a great evening for i just got one of the greatest idea in mankind’s History.

Anyway a great idea for NUFC for i just found how to win titles again.

For i first found the origin of all:

As excellents NUFC fans you are, i guess you know everything about Bobby Moncur who scored three goals during the final of the 1969’s inter city fair cup, our last title.

The only three goals Moncur scored during his Newcastle’s career, wich mean 296 games.

A fact who should have make us aware of something going one…

And to speak of our last Champion’s title, it was in 1927 so 84 years ago.

But do you know the story of the Boston red sox? The were the best base-ball club at the begining of the 20th century, but they won nothing from 1918 to 2004, so it mean 86 years…

This long period was called by a sinister name, the Bambino’s curse!

Bambino was the nickname of babe ruth, the greatest base ball player of all time. He won three titles with the red sox, but finally, in 1920, he went to the New York Yankees.

The sworn enemis of the Red sox. And so begun the Bambino’s curse…

Cause Ruth, who was the leader of the team during the last title, went to the ark rival of the sox.

And do you know where went Moncur when he left NUFC in 1974?

Yes, absolutly, he signed for they who must not be named, the worst ever football club in history, in fact even the worst human group who ever existed if we speak of the city as a whole!

And since then, ours days were made of total delusion…

For as you noticed it, the Red sox finaly won again. How did they do that will you ask?

Well, everything turned during the American league championship series ( the semi final of the Major League Baseball if you prefer) 2004.

The Red sox were trailled 3 games to none by the… New york Yankees!

And finally, they won the series 4 games to 3, becoming the first team in history to overcome a 0-3 disadvantage. They also prevailled in the world series who followed, their first title after 86 years.

    1. We got to qualify for the semi finals of the FA CUP.

    2. We got to manage for they who must not be named qualify too. The hardest part of the job for sure… It would require sacrifice, but every cause got martyrs, so it would be fine if 10 000 of us could accept to wear their shirt and to sing for support them in their stadium, for as everyone know, it lack greatly of atmosphere.
Additionnaly, we will have to persuade the FA to let Beny, Colo and Cab play for them in the Cup prior to the semi final if we want them to have a chance.
Well, to pay thei opponents will be needed too…

    3. We must arrange the draft to be sure we will play against them in semi final, i will tak no chance about it.

    4. We must let them score the three first goals. In this, i know reckon the true genius Pard is, for it seem he already got the idea last season.
Unfortunatly it, didn’t work for the plan also require to finally beat them 4 goals to 3…
Well, it was probably just a test to be sure the players would accept in time to let they who must not be named scored 3 goals in a row against us. As is said, every cause need martyrs…

    5. And so, finally, by scoring these 4 goals and thereby win the game, we will be rid of the Moncurino’s curse.

So we will win plenty of titles again!

Now tell me, what do you think of this plan? Brilliant isn’t it?

  • 61 jimiley // Jul 30, 2013 at 6:32 PM

Its reassuring that Percy and his mates are on 8 year contracts. Thank God for stability. More mediocrity and disasters in the offing. & more goes at getting us relegated and with Big Joe on board and no cash from Ash, we must be a good bet to go down in the next few years. Bale is worth more than our club. Thanks a lot Big Mike.

  • 62 viv // Jul 30, 2013 at 6:36 PM

Niafron a brilliant plan but far to sophisticated for the cockney mafia to adopt.

  • 63 jimmysmith // Jul 30, 2013 at 6:37 PM

Jesus, unless its looney Arab money, who ever would come in for us would most probably be even worse. I don’t like Ashley, but who would buy Newcastle and throw the necessary readies at it that Ashley won’t. Branson would be nice, but I’m sure he wouldn’t entertain the notion.

  • 64 toon22 // Jul 30, 2013 at 6:39 PM

All we really must wish for is a new owner who is actually interested in us as a team/club and actually care less about competing and not just want to stay in the league as it makes more money and is worth more to sell.
MA is as interested in us as he is with all of his zero hour employees.

    Beware Rangers fans.

  • 65 The Arizona Geordie Pizzicato // Jul 30, 2013 at 6:39 PM

niafron, I like the plan, but it’s just too wordy. JFK wouldn’t be able to read through the first line.

  • 66 SeanNufc87 // Jul 30, 2013 at 6:40 PM

  • 67 jimiley // Jul 30, 2013 at 6:42 PM

A great idea. I remember Bob Moncur well. Top player. But to reverse the curse we need a center half (Bob was a central defender) to score 3 goals. Thats where your plan falls down. We aint got a defender that can score a goal in a whole season, never mind three in one game. Sorry mate, it will not work.

  • 68 lesh // Jul 30, 2013 at 8:56 PM

    Toon-Prodigy @52

Far from fhe pressure piling on Kinnear, it’ll be on Pardew in the short term as he’ll have had the big question put to him: ‘Are you saying you can’t do well with this squad?’
What’s he gonna say as there’s no doubt it looks good on paper?

Then, if he’s pushed, that’s when SuperJoe moves in, buys a couple in January, survives relegation, and bingo! Or, the pressure gets to him again and he finds he csn’t take it.

Whichever way, it’s a dogs breakfast – again.
