Papiss Cisse is set to start his first pre-season game tonight at St. Mirren and it looks like Alan Pardew will again play in a 4-4-2 formation at Love Street tonight.
Papiss Cisse scoring dramatic injury time winner against Stoke
It will be great to see Papiss back in action after his stand-off with Newcastle and Wonga ended last week, and he finally reached an agreement to wear the Wonga insignia on his shirt and training gear.
Both Yoan Gouffran and Shola Ameobi have played well up front so far in this pre-season, with Shola getting three goals and Gouffran getting one goal, so that’s over half of the 7 goals Newcastle have scored so far.
And after Shola suffered from a dead leg in the first half at Blackpool on Sunday, after scoring for the team after just 5 minutes, we will probably see Gouffran and Cisse start up front tonight.
Newcastle haven’t suffered too many injuries this pre-season (fingers crossed), but Obertan has a slight knock and is unavailable for this game.
This is what Alan Pardew had to say in the local press about tonight’s game:
“Anita will be involved. Obertan has got a slight knock.” “He will be the one player you won’t see this week. Hatem, Colo and Papiss will also play.”
It’s always good to get wins, whether it’s in pre-season or not, and we are hoping we can put in another good performance tonight and get the win, and if we can do that it will be three wins in five pre-season games so far.
Pardew has said Cisse has looked very sharp in training over the last few days, so it will be good to see the Senegal captain in action tonight, and to see how he looks in his Wonga shirt. 😀

if we lose will pardew blame the europe-like preseason fixture list with so many matches in close succession?

Comment #5I’m more interested in getting the Strikers in that we desperately need at the minute. Frustration at the clubs performance in the transfer window is starting to take it’s toll on me now. Trying to be patient but when we seemingly keep failing to acquire our targets it kind of leaves you expecting the worst.

Comment #8442 with Ameobi upfront is a recipe for disaster. I’ve forgotten how bad a manger he is with all this Transfer disaster.

Comment #9I have no doubt Mike Ashley will build a squad capable of challenging for 10th place in the EPL, if we don´t have any annoying and disruptive cup runs.

Comment #10I wonder if young Campbell will do anything this season. I always hated playing against pace ( when I was younger) and that lad has pace to burn !
Problem is we arr very rarely two or three goals to the good……

i haven’t really been on the blog much lately, but your tone has significantly soured over the course of the year!
I mean, I don’t blame you, but, chin up. if we start off as poorly as most of think we will, at least JFK should entertain us off the pitch once pards is shown the door.

Comment #13You´ve got to be crazy to play 442 when you don´t have any natural wingers.
It´s the width on both wings that stretches the opposition that makes 442 work.
Of course anyone playing a 433 to a fluid 451 is going to spank you as 442 went out with the dinosaurs.

Many clubs play with one (or no) wingers these days. Formations are a lot more fluid than they used to be.
We have players like Jonas, Ben Arfa, Marv and Goofy who can play out wide but Jonas is the only one of those who is (supposed to be) a natural hug the touchline winger. I haven’t really seen him exactly excel in that role though, he’s been more of a wide midfielder in recent seasons, although he’s been excellent at tracking back and mucking in in midfield.
I’d like to see more width provided by Santon and Debuchy, two naturally attacking full backs.

Comment #27Really think we should start to use the 433 formation for our attacking style. This is a decent set up IMO.
Debuchy—M’Biwa—Collo—Santon
——————–Sissoko—————
———–Cabaye———-Marv——–
—-HBA———–Cisse—–Gouffran
HBA and Goofy can cut inside on the attack allowing Debuchy and Santon to overlap. If the move breaks down we will have Sissoko to help mop up and turn things back around. I believe Tiote’s position should be Sissoko’s. and Tiote as the back up. Might just work!

Jonas sucks, all he´s good for is falling over and winning free kicks in the last ten minutes.
He doesn´t offer width he always cuts inside as he hasn´t got the strength to cross from the touchline.

Comment #33toonfan76, hatem’s better than messi
i was convinced when we signed anita last year it heralded the end of 442 and was signalling an obvious 433/4231 attacking formation. lo and behold. such a shame, because that first 30-35 minutes against bordeaux in the europa league with cabaye pushed forward, tiote and anita holding, was BY FAR the best 30-35 minutes of football we played last season. what’d pardew do? He pushed anita to FB and abandoned it altogether for a 442, and it was just a dour affair for the rest of the match. tiote is back up now and the same should try to be achieved with anita and sissoko in those holding roles. it won’t be though.
oh, and toondarnsarf,
do you always spout such nonsensical garbage?

Comment #40For anyone who is anti-Ashley, please cast your mind back to when he joined the club…
I remember him sitting with the fans, having a laugh, talking about his love for football and ambitions for the club…oh those heady days where we thought we had a new SJH…
He listened to the fans slag off Big Sam, we didn’t like his “long ball” tactics and thought they were unbecoming of a club that had been dubbed “the entertainers” a few years before and since then had fielded more exciting attacking players like Robert and Dyer…
So, he sacked Big Sam and went back to the manager who presided over our most exciting time in (most fans’) living memory…Kevin Keegan…
Having already failed to do his due diligence on the club, and being lumbered with a debt of approx. £100M that he didn’t anticipate, he also failed to due his due diligence on KK. KK is an old school manager and no doubt he wanted full control of signings and a clear (and substantial) budget with which to overhaul the squad. Of course KK would want that, as any passionate football fan would want it for their club, but there lies the problem…there was no way that MA was going to give that much control to KK, who was clearly going to spend as if we were a CL club…it would have worked a treat if we had got into the CL but if it didn’t then the club (and MA) would be left with a huge debt and potentially several players on big wages that we didn’t want.
So…he brought in someone he knew and trusted to keep a reign on the transfer dealings and make sure that they didn’t get out of control. This might work just fine in his other businesses where there isn’t as much passion or ego involved, but he didn’t understand how football is just different. Managers/directors on big salaries aren’t often university educated professionals with years working their way up the ladder..many are working class passionate lads who learned the ropes playing football and now direct the same energy and passion into managing. So KK was never going to have DW dictate to him what players to choose…
So, MA’s plan on being “one of the lads” backfired miserably…JFK was brought in to stablise the ship, and when that didn’t work, he tried to fix his earlier mistake by bringing in Shearer. If Shearer kept us up, then MA would be lauded for bringing in a NUFC legend to save the day and if as Shearer’s star rose even higher, so he would pull MA with him and maybe he could get back to watching football with the fans?
And, we all know the rest…it all fell apart, MA was slagged off and is clearly not welcome as one of the fans any more…so he runs it like one of his other grotty little (meaning huge) businesses…can’t say I like it…but can’t say I blame him…
