News came in this afternoon just before the game kicked off with St. Mirren that Newcastle’s 20 year-old midfielder Mehdi Abeid has joined Panathinaikos on a season-long loan deal, the Greek club have announced.
Mehdi Abeid – going on one year loan deal to Greece
Abeid made a good start to his Newcastle career when he first arrived from Lens on a free transfer in the summer of 2011, but he lost his way a bit last season and still has made only 5 appearances for Newcastle in Cup games and hasn’t yet played in the Premier League.
Mehdi spent time on loan with Scottish Premier League side St Johnstone earlier this year, and he made 13 appearances including nine starts..
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is keen to get his young players out playing regular football next season and he has agreed to the French-born Algerian going out on loan to Greece for the season.
A statement from the top Greek club read as follows:
“Panathinaikos announces the agreement with Newcastle United for the one year loan of Algerian International Mehdi Abeid.”
It’s good that some of the fringe players get first team football elsewhere, and hopefully make good progress because of it – and we’ll see Abeid again next July and Alan Pardew will assess then the progress made by the Algerian U23 International.
We’ll be following Abeid in the Greek League next season, and lets hope he does really well.
