Newcastle Midfielder Agrees Season Loan Deal To Greek Club

12:10 am, Wednesday, July 31st, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 22 Comments

News came in this afternoon just before the game kicked off with St. Mirren that Newcastle’s 20 year-old midfielder Mehdi Abeid has joined Panathinaikos on a season-long loan deal, the Greek club have announced.

Mehdi Abeid - going on one year loan deal to Greece
Abeid made a good start to his Newcastle career when he first arrived from Lens on a free transfer in the summer of 2011, but he lost his way a bit last season and still has made only 5 appearances for Newcastle in Cup games and hasn’t yet played in the Premier League.

Mehdi spent time on loan with Scottish Premier League side St Johnstone earlier this year, and he made 13 appearances including nine starts..

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is keen to get his young players out playing regular football next season and he has agreed to the French-born Algerian going out on loan to Greece for the season.

A statement from the top Greek club read as follows:

“Panathinaikos announces the agreement with Newcastle United for the one year loan of Algerian International Mehdi Abeid.”

It’s good that some of the fringe players get first team football elsewhere, and hopefully make good progress because of it – and we’ll see Abeid again next July and Alan Pardew will assess then the progress made by the Algerian U23 International.

We’ll be following Abeid in the Greek League next season, and lets hope he does really well.

Comments welcome.

Don’t panathinaikos get CL football? Seems like a solid loan choice for Mehdi

Remy and Niang( though I highly doubt we’ll bring him here) and get Gomis in January for even cheaper then i’ll be very happy! And maybe a winger, sinclair or Ince…. Okay I’m being greedy!

Hi Manx, your up late ..how you doing?

  • 9 jimmysmith // Jul 31, 2013 at 12:44 AM

If Campbell and Sammy are realistic EPL prospects, then I think if we get Remy we’ll be prepared to let Gomis go as things stand. Remy and Gouffy give us cover wide and centrally and the young lads can step into the breach in a pinch. Although if we don’t get Gomis now, we are less likely to land him as a free agent. But who knows.

    Really want Sinclair signed up!

  • 11 ONLINE GUY // Jul 31, 2013 at 12:53 AM

If reports are true, that Newcastle’s offer for Gomis was almost £7 million then that ist goot for der Striker , He will soon be out of contract. I would have snapped Newcastles hands off ..great offer for a player out of contract in less than a year’s time

Have Newcastle stung Gomis’s club for a player in the past …mmmmm let me think.

The french club are playing a greedy game , we walked away ,,they will be sweating now after such a good offer from de Toon

Really hope Abeid gets game time at Pana and comes back ready to challenge for a first team spot. Firmly in accordance with Kets views, super talent.

gotta say sammy looks like he’s coming of age, could be a big season for him, defo need another winger thought, sinclair would be a brilliant signing imo

    Arizona Geordie

Ninis now plays for Parma, is 23 and has failed to live up to the hype he had while at Panathinaikos

  • 15 ONLINE GUY // Jul 31, 2013 at 12:57 AM

  • 16 jimmysmith // Jul 31, 2013 at 12:59 AM

If we miss out on Remy, we will need a striker/winger or one of both, he or similar is the priority, not Gomis in my view.

Hit the nail on the head there mate. If I’m honest I was surprised that we bid that highly under the circumstances of his contract but Its only a matter of time before they come back and either accept or offer again and if they offer again then we could have them buy the short and curlys!

  • 18 The Arizona Geordie Pizzicato // Jul 31, 2013 at 1:01 AM

@STK, thanks. didn’t know Ninis’ already gone.

I guess there’s some grudge against us in France already. We kept getting cheap and nice players from them. The last window was crazy, right? Yanga-Mbiwa, Sissoko, Gouffran, Haidara, Debuchy… which one is expensive? The prices of these five sum up as peanuts only. Moreover, we got Cabaye for a very cheap price.

  • 19 ONLINE GUY // Jul 31, 2013 at 1:06 AM

    Jackel001

I now expect them to come begging Newcastle to buy him. …They where at the card table with Newcastle, playing with a weak hand really, and should have took the offer..If no other club comes in ..Ashley might just offer £4 million take it or leave it …they are dealing with a seasoned Poker player in Ashley . Called their bluff so to speak , to coin a phrase , it’s late ! ..

I didnt want to comment anymore here, toommany muppets like tads, manxpie, toonking, yoyo, toonprodigy, jack butler and so on… But when I saw toonthompson s comment about benny being injured I went crazy.
