Well, here’s a report in the Mirror that says that Newcastle signed Bafetimbi Gomis for £8M earlier this week – well would you believe it – we didn’t even know.
Bafe Gomis is not yet a Newcastle player
The report is that Darren Bent being frozen out of a move this summer, as another Fulham bid was turned down by Aston Villa, with Newcastle not interested any more, as we have signed Gomis and we are now after QPR’s Loic Remy.
The report is not accurate, because like a few other journalists in the last day or so, the assumption has been made that once Newcastle have agreed a fee with Lyon and then personal terms with Gomis, it’s a done deal.
Well we suppose that may be true in most cases, but this is Newcastle, where nothing is ever easy – let’s face it.
Certainly getting a senior player through the door this summer is proving to be rather difficult and even gruesome for our new Director of Football, Joe Kinnear. 😀
And there are different reports in France on what the issue is actually that’s holding up the deal, but one is that the fees Gomis’ representatives want, is not being met by Newcastle – not yet anyway.
One more potential issue is who pays the 5% sign-on fee to Gomis’ former club Saint Etienne, and those are the two reasons we understand to be holding up the deal.
The truth is that we haven’t signed anybody yet.
And that’s a pity – but maybe tomorrow?
Hope springs eternal.
Note – a few hours after this report was put out, the Mirror updated their story, which was that we had signed Gomis a few days ago – and they removed that bit – spoilsports.

Comment #1I think the deal has been tied up for a while now but we have waited to release our new home shirt.
Think about it. A lot of people are put off by Wonga but see a new striker holding a shiny new shirt and can’t resist. Far fetched but anything is possible with Ashley in charge 😉 .

His name is Alexei Mordashov. He’s worth 12.5 billion (Roman is worth 9.5 billion) and supports NUFC.
Here’s his wiki page:

Comment #3Surely it looks close now on both Gomis and Remy. Still no medical or picture of them holding up the shirt so anything can still happen.

Comment #8Maybe UEFA or FIFA need to implement some ground rules when it comes to who pays the signon fees and how much can agents get.
…it is all a bit like no man’s land! We need to some sort of sanity brought back into football.
Platini has been blinded by his darling (making clubs selfsustainable) and need to see the bigger picture!

Comment #9I follow Lyon and what I can tell you about Bafe is that he will miss quite a few easy goals but he holds up the ball better than any striker Ive seen and gets a ton of free kicks called bec of it. This is very good for Cabaye and Ben Arfa as we will have s lot of set piece opportunities.
