There’s a decent video of Joe Kinnear speaking with Sky Tyne and Wear and the interview lasts over eight minutes and it’s on a cricket filed before Joe takes part in a charity cricket game.
Joe Kinnear – decent interview
That’s been the big news on Sunday afternoon and it’s a decent interview in that Joe talks well and quite professionally about what Newcastle are doing in the transfer market.
It’s great for the fans to hear exactly what’s happening, and it even sounds good, but we still wish both Joe and Alan Pardew would keep quiet about the deals – until they are complete.
This is the bit right at the end, when Joe is asked how successful can Newcastle be next season:
“I think it took it’s toll and we had a tough season last season, no question about that , and injuries didn’t help things either.” “Maybe the squad wasn’t big and strong enough in certain areas.”
“I’ve sat down with Alan and we’ve gone through numerous things, irrespective of what everybody else is saying about it and the tricky stories that we don’t get on and this that and the other, you as well as I do that it’s a nonsense.
“We get on very well and we have the utmost respect for each other, he keeps in touch with me on a regular basis, and I keeps in touch with him on a regular basis
“I know it’s frustrating for anybody at the club at the moment going into the start of the season without having additional strikers but we are dong the very best we can and I can give people my word of honor if it’s not being these players that we may not be able to snatch and sign we would be signing somebody else.”
“That’s for sure, because we have a second hit list if these three players fall through”
Joe also said he wanted to get the strikers in first, and then he would go after a player to strengthen another part of the side.
Joe of course didn’t mention what the position was and who the targets may be, but that could be a winger like Blackpool’s Tom Ince, or maybe a central midfielder like James McCarthy of Wigan.
Here’s the full interview and it’s definitely worth a look and listen.

Comment #41I’m worried. If Darren Bent and Bafe Gomis were are main targets (apart from Aubamayang… apparently) then how mediocre are we aiming?
I’ve watched a fair bit of Gomis since we were first linked with him and have never been very impressed. Poor touch, erratic and poor decision making.
Darren bent? Even worse in the last 2 seasons…..

Comment #43@ i – I think it’ll be just like last season- just 1 first team signing this summer.
No way all 3/4.
Little money spent, consolidate PL status, loads more TV money = job done.

Comment #45I wonder what exactly is the budget he is talkin about. Considering gomis looks like he’s goin 2 cost about 9 or 10m.
Next season I can tell u, will need 2 upgrade mike willison, and if coloccini leaves, we to buy 2 defenders.
Meaning if all this searching for two strikers wouldn’t difficult or complicated enough, not forgetting frustrating, Jfk is gonna be right back to square one next season when he looks for defenders! Oh dear god! Lol

Comment #47If we sign 2 strikers (never mind 3) then Cisse will have to go to claw back some of the money because that is the way we work. This seems so obvious to me. Can you really see us with 4 first class strikers ( or purples) .No way

Comment #48Why wouldn’t you talk openly about being after a player once a bid has been lodged, as surely there is no point in being coy at that point as it basically becomes common knowledge anyway.
The best you can really do is keep quiet until then and suggest you also have other targets, which they seem to have done. Joe did give the impression that he wasn’t in control though, which makes you think not all the deals for the primary targets are likely to get done.

Comment #49I think he has an overall budget of about 10/12 million, from the tv deal and what he can generate. He will be desperately trying to offload Gosling, Shola, Amafino & Obertan plus the Perch & AC clause money. Then a few quid for Inman too.

Comment #51Budget of 10 – 12 million. Would certainly explain why we’re bidding 2 million on bent. There’s no chance bent gonna be joining us. Fulham can offer double that no problem

Comment #52I really really cannot wait to be able to watch our team go out for the day to play, knowing we have an option other than Shola to turn to if things are not going well. We’ve not experienced that for 8 years or so now and I really hope we can move him on and give someone else an opportunity.

I rambled on about JFK and his misuse of the press. As my dept PIO cant abide his statements. Hopefully my first post gets scrubbed.

Agreed. No reason, with better health than last year, not to go top 6….and truly challenge for a Cup. Seems to me, last year Pards placed Europe ahead of any cup challenge and “mailed it in”. Why not, with the roster you posted….eh? Lots of top shelf talent there…purples (which is an MMORPG reference)

Comment #69Good interview. I have no ironic under tone or second intentions with this.
Joe – my advice – time to say to the people involved in these deals that, ok guys, we agree something by Tuesday or we must continue our search somewhere else, we will wish you all the best. This is the offer at the moment, lets talk.
There are two reasons for this:
1. Setting deadlines makes people work and get things done.
2. If no deal is done we walk away and show to who ever was involved and to others that when we say Tuesday, we mean Tuesday, not Thursday or maybe on Saturday.
I am not sure how many players are registered by FIFA, but I know there are more than Gomis, Bent and Remy.
End.

Comment #70@Shadow Shearer – I’m guessing you’ve not seen much/ any of Bafe Gomis before?
He could never, ever play as an attacking midfielder!!
It would be like playing cameron Jerome/ Carlton Cole as AM!
He’s just not that great technically. I’m fairly sure he’s primarily being bought because he’s big and strong. Just what Pardew and Kinnear like…..

When you are scouting players (this is only IMHO by the way) what I would look at is,will the player fit into the way i want my team to play.I would not buy a player if he did Not fit in my style of play even if he was a good player.Great players don’t always mean great teams.Players MUST fit into a team style. This by the way is on top of what you were saying about scouting players. All them strikers does not mean more goals,we need a man to link up play & score goals, again only IMHO.

I meant to ask if some of the guys on here who have actually done some scouting for clubs to post what they look for in a player.
gonufc (not Arf' bad)
Aug 5, 2013 at 5:12 AM
Comment #74@nut meg- I’d say that is the decision of the manager. The scout simply gathers all of the appropriate information about the player and then the manager has to decide whether he can fit into the side.

Yes 100% correct,i was scouting as the manager. The manager dictates which way he wants the team to play & what kind of players he wants.

Comment #77Oh its all doom and gloom again.
People reading far too much, or rather looking for the flaws that aren’t there in an interview. He’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t.
I understand he has given us reason for scrutiny but hes making all the right noises.
You cant have a go for him talking about targets we are well documented to be after, you will notice the interviewer names specific targets not kinnear. I for one am glad for an update on where we are with them.
As for people having a go about him playing cricket, Howay lads its a charity game for the cancer that took his son man.
We need to stop looking for the negatives in everything and then getting outraged when we find a glimmer of them.
Heres some positives for you:
We are definitely going for a striker
We are in advanced talks with 2 of them.
We have signed a fitness specialist.
Training harder
Manager quoted long ball is a thing of the past.
Kinnear has a second position to strengthen once the priority position is sorted.
Chin up lad’s. Up the toon!
P.s a few days ago (during the swans game) a short comment was posted from my account calling their fans kernts, this wasnt me, it was a work mate who posted it while I was in the shower. He only told me he did it this morning so apologies to anyone who was offended.

I totally agree with your post. I am sure there were several posts on here stating,”why do we get told nowt by the club”. The club do not generally give information away, it is a business after all. The information about the three players has come from the selling clubs or agents in an attempt to generate more interest from other clubs and higher bids. Mourinho, Moyes, Wenger amongst others have openly stated who they want to buy. Stop looking at the negatives. A great deal of the posts on here are guesswork, with little creedance. Give the club a break and wait until the season starts and the window is closed before making a decision.

Comment #80Hey manager, DOF and coaches, I know this sounds a radical type of position but it may help the team:
“WINGER: Definition: Wide attacking players whose primary role is to run at opposition full-backs and create goalscoring opportunities by crossing the ball into the penalty area. Speed is an important attribute as a winger as is the ability to dribble with the ball and pick out a good cross.
Also Known As: Wide Man.”
