Striker Rubbishes Newcastle Link – But We Don’t Want Him

11:36 am, Monday, August 5th, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 463 Comments

It’s a ploy some players use that when they realize that they are not really being pursued by a club, they come out and say the news is all rubbish – or some other similar word.

 andre-pierre gignac clenched fist

Andre-Pierre Gignac – not on Newcastle’s list

And maybe that’s what’s happened with Marseilles striker Andre-Pierre Gignac today, after Director of Football Joe Kinnear yesterday in his interview with Sky Sports, made it very clear, too clear – that Newcastle were after three specific strikers – Loic Remy, Bafe Gomis and Darren Bent.

Joe didn’t mention Gignac.

Gignac has been interviewed in the French Daily L’Equipe today and this is what he had to say:

“You think I’m leaving Marseilles?” “I never had any intention of leaving and Newcastle and all the rest is bull****.” (editorial  note: that’s similar to rubbish)

“I let my adviser Jean-Christophe Cano,  Marseilles President Vincent Labrune,  and Sporting Director  Jose Anigo  see everything.”

The French International did say a month or so ago that he would not be interested in a Newcastle move, and that he wanted a bigger club.

But there’s no evidence Newcastle were ever interested in the player and it was probably all paper talk, and in any case if we were true, that kind of attitude probably scared Newcastle off, and if it didn’t it should have, because we only want players who want to come to Newcastle United.

Great news today that Loic Remy is having a medical at Newcastle and if sign him for a season long loan, that;s exactly what Newcastle fans want to hear.

Hey, maybe that photo of Loic with a Newcastle fan yesterday (supposedly in Newcastle) could have been true after all? :D

And his signing on loan should help lift the mood on Tyneside  ….  significantly.

Comments welcome.

Any truth in the Menez link?

  • 2 surreytoon // Aug 5, 2013 at 11:39 AM

Menez is on the PSG transfer list according to Le 10 Sport this morning. Could just be 2+2 by Soccersauce…

  • 3 JackButler // Aug 5, 2013 at 11:40 AM

In Gignac mind he’s a class player but he’s was slated all season long by his team mates and the fans, there’s a very good reason why the want rid of him and that’s because he’s poor

Anyone know how much PSG would want for menez as I doubt we’d pay this:

  • 7 Rainrix // Aug 5, 2013 at 11:41 AM

Menez or not the fact that we’re actually looking for a left winger is promising. Only 2 years overdue.

  • 8 surreytoon // Aug 5, 2013 at 11:41 AM

    Pete Graves ?@PeteGravesSky 26m

Remy to #nufc has permanent option at end of season. The ‘other area’ Kinnear has spoken of strengthening is left wing. After 2 strikers in.

    Is Menez left wing?

Gignac will not be a loss as will bent to palace.
These are players that would not take Nufc forward like the likes of Remy will.

gomis and remy and its happy days looking for a winger for the rest of the window imo :-) i may actually start to feel good about our club again going into the new season.

Menez was 5-star once upon a time in Fifa. then he got PSG’ed, we only want 5-star bums-off-the-seats-heading-for-the-exits players…

I was only Kinnearing,… Menez is beacoup welcome

  • 17 jazzyp // Aug 5, 2013 at 11:48 AM

    Big papa
that’s one hell of a team,What dreams are made of-NOT.
Imagine first game of the season at city and he still picks guti over Remy and Gomis and Menez ???…….if they were to come in.

  • 18 OhSholaAmeobi // Aug 5, 2013 at 11:48 AM

Menez would be one hell of a buy. I think Biabany would be a great cheaper option though, he’s quicker than Walcott.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEpdtO9pK2k

  • 19 croftus5678 // Aug 5, 2013 at 11:50 AM

    my team would be

    krull
    deb-mbiwa-collo-sant
    arfa-siss-cabaye-remy
    gomis-cisse

unsure on krull or elliott though tbh as elliott’s distribution in all our friendlys has helped the team in all areas and cabaye/sissoko can defend aswell as attack in midfield.

  • 20 SeanNufc87 // Aug 5, 2013 at 11:51 AM

Menez? On the bench for ben arfa yeah?

  • 21 JackButler // Aug 5, 2013 at 11:51 AM

Lets just hope that we do get all the players in that we need and that they all stay fit and healthy all season long so Pardew doesn’t have anymore excuses or anywhere to hide and can finally be judged

  • 23 Jail for Ashley // Aug 5, 2013 at 11:53 AM

Somebody on the previous thread mentioned 45 posts without one being negative, maybe if the club hadn’t fusked about for the last six weeks there’d have been a lot more !

  • 24 Levi // Aug 5, 2013 at 11:54 AM

If we only get Remy in this window and don’t lose any one i would be a very happy man. Not many premierleague teams have 3 top quality strikers and cisse,Remy, and gouf are 3 great strikers. If once or/and gomis come in i would have to pinch my self haha

  • 25 gaz 44 // Aug 5, 2013 at 11:54 AM

If we did sign menez we are just asking for trouble menez Hba and remy in same team no way of keeping them all happy and all three very arrogant

  • 26 nufc1984 // Aug 5, 2013 at 11:54 AM

Repost – The other line on the twitter is that man city want debuchy. I know its far fetched, but if it did happen would anyone be happier with cash and Richards as our right back?

  • 27 Moe // Aug 5, 2013 at 11:54 AM

    OhShola @18

Doesn’t Biabiany kinda like Remy? He does to me at least :)

It would be a mistake if we neglect central defender, it is hard for me to see Colo staying past this season. I hope for once the club have some planning a head of future problems.

  • 28 JackButler // Aug 5, 2013 at 11:54 AM

Remy arriving for medical by all accounts not so sure myself

  • 29 gaz 44 // Aug 5, 2013 at 11:55 AM

Think we need gomis or someone similar to add some bulk to our attack, we have a very small squad. No wonder we struggle at set pieces

  • 30 Markaccus // Aug 5, 2013 at 11:55 AM

If we are playing 442, then this Menez fella ( i know nowt about him) would be on the wing with hba on the other i imagine. Remy and cisse up front. 433, maybe remy and menez flanking cisse, hba as the no10 with socks and cabs behind. Does that sound correct? Like i say i am not familiar with Menez.

  • 31 Rooster // Aug 5, 2013 at 11:56 AM

Micah Richards Being talked about as well as Simclair, its hotting up a bit. Come on JK show us you mean BUSINESS! come on back some things up and you may start to earn some respect, you will of the rooster anyways!

  • 34 Big Pappa Cissé // Aug 5, 2013 at 12:00 PM

If we bring in Menez as well I will be getting a season ticket :) , Then we could play these two teams:

    Team 1 (4-4-2) :

    ————————-Krul——————–

    –Debuchy——M’biwa——Collo—–Santon–

    —-HBA——Sissoko——Cabs—–Menez—

    —————-Gomis——-Cisse—————

    Team 2 (4-3-3) :

    ————————-Krul——————–

    –Debuchy——M’biwa——Collo—–Santon–

    ——Sissoko———-Cabaye——-Anita——

    ——-HBA————-Cisse——–Remy—–

All that with a subs bench of:

    Elliot,Taylor,Haidara,Tiote,Gutierrez,Marv & Gouffran.

    Wow :)

  • 35 wynsleap // Aug 5, 2013 at 12:00 PM

Don’t want to pee on anyone’s chips but if we are to get Remi, Gomis and a quality left winger in it will be no doubt paid for by the exit of someone like Tiote, Cabaye, Cisse or Krul.
Mind if we could get the two strikers and Menez for the price of Cabaye (who for me still hasn’t cut the mustard) I’d take that as a great deal. (Some actual investment without selling anybody however would be very nice).

  • 36 JackButler // Aug 5, 2013 at 12:00 PM

    Moe

that pics has just gonna nuts on twitter with everyone claiming Remy was in it.

would be typical NUFC though, all these other club’s sending top of the ranged Merc’s, BMW’s or Range Rover’s to pick up the player and we send a transit van

  • 37 Belfast // Aug 5, 2013 at 12:01 PM

  • 54 croftus5678 // Aug 5, 2013 at 12:09 PM

have we actualy been linked with menez or id this just because he’s become availible and we have jumped to conclusions again ?

and if its anyone who will leave our club it will be cabaye on a big offer but that has been quite for some time now so i dont think so !

we do not financially need to sell anyone to fund these transfers as tv money is paying for them atm so we could buy a winger also (not sure how much tv money is but i suspect we will need some left for a jan backup plan)

  • 55 low fell mag // Aug 5, 2013 at 12:09 PM

Its quite easy to get crap or average players on board.
Sunderland have went out and bought a full team , minus two .
7 of those players have cost the total sum of 20 regal king size.
The cream of the market takes a little longer.ie Bale ,suarez , Rooney ,Fabregas.
Patience pays off in the end.

    Sissoko Anita

    Cabaye

    Benny Cisse Remy

o.k. total guess here but in tv rights we should be getting around 45mil this year (norm around the 20mil mark) and seeing as we are finiancially on track +/- a few mil i will gie ashley the benefit of doubt and cover ourselves with 5mil leaving 20mil for transfers !

gomis/remy we must be talking what 12mil ish ? should leave another 8mil to get another player before we start having to even think about selling a player + transfers out.

we may air on the side of caution though and keep some back for energency’s in jan.

    croftus

The break down is that the bottom club will pick up £25 million more this season with more coming in depending on how many televised games that club has and the Wonga deal is ‘reported’ to be £6 million a year.

Man UTD picked up £60 million last season for winning the title but this seasons winners will pick up in excess of £100 million.

Either way there is no reason for us to be penny pinching this window

Why would they sign Debuchy, when they’ve Richards and Zabaleta ? Zabaleta’s the best right back in the league in my opinion.

Debuchy to Man City with Richards coming the other way and Sinclair on loan…sounds unquestionably true

  • 101 LooneyToon41 // Aug 5, 2013 at 12:45 PM

    @78 Croftus, and @87 Richie.

I don’t know for sure. but i would have thought that MA/Irving would take into account at least 5 years revenues, v 5 years costs (including wages) in deciding ‘whats the budget’?
‘What’s the budget?’ should mean, Transfer cash and Ongoing wages cash available.
    These are business people.
After the sale of A.Carroll, there isn’t just £35m available suddenly to spend 100% on transfer fees.
I should think that JK/AP have been told to ‘free up’ the wages budget to allow the potential signings of Gomis/Remy etc….
Love to know how much of Remy’s wages, NUFC are paying……. hopefully not enough to p1ss off Cabaye etc etc

  • 102 Belfast // Aug 5, 2013 at 12:46 PM

Couldn’t see it. He would be playing second fiddle to Zabaleta

  • 103 pawl250 // Aug 5, 2013 at 12:48 PM

Hopefully we have good news on Remy by end of the day, perhaps holding a shirt up would be nice.

A few reasons Remy on loan is great business.

    1. Injuries, he has been plagued for a couple of seasons now with his hamstring, allows him time to prove he is worth a transfer fee.

    2. The possibility of a criminal charge. Although he has not yet been charged, he could be at a later date. The risk of buying someone who potentially could end up in jail is worth the loan until such time passes.

    3. We can still meet the release clause in January, and QPR will have no option to accept. At this point he has had 6 month to prove himself, the criminal case will have passed, outcome revealed and STILL NUFC will be front runners for his signature why?!

Because no one will pay 7-8m on a player they will not have access too in 6 month time. They will have to wait for his season long loan to complete with us before they actually have him. In that time anything could happen, his fitness maybe in question or injuries could occur. Not many clubs would take a gamble on that scenario, as Newcastle are in control of those 6 months whilst his loan remains.

Quality business from NUFC if we wrap this one up, and worth the 2m loan fee alone until all is resolved.

Hopefully we can get this one over the line, the one I wanted most of all mentioned.

  • 104 OhSholaAmeobi // Aug 5, 2013 at 12:48 PM

    looney

got to take into account agents fees etc. too, when it says a club paid £5m (example) for a player in truth it’s probably closer to £7m.

  • 112 Spuggy // Aug 5, 2013 at 12:54 PM

Debuchy was exposed a good few times, but we couldn’t keep the ball for toffee which put more pressure on defense.

Whole team needs to defend and retain the ball better.

  • 113 Belfast // Aug 5, 2013 at 12:54 PM

I’d expect him to be a lot better this year. He looked to weak last season. Hoping it was just the pace of the league. He was getting pushed of the ball very easy too

  • 114 pawl250 // Aug 5, 2013 at 12:54 PM

Debuchy is a better defender than Simpson,

I doubt Man City are in for him having Zabaleta and Richards available…. they also have the money to buy anyone in the world so Debuchy would be unlikely.

He is a credible attacking threat, and can deliver a ball. I agree he is weakest at defending, but its a marked improvement over what we had last year.

I foresee he will benefit from the limited 6 month he has had with us and improve this year.

  • 123 Twatter // Aug 5, 2013 at 1:03 PM

Actually on the subject of Debuchy, I would say from what I’ve seen so far Simpson could defend better. Debuchy is the better RB overall because he provides something going forward but he was caught out quite a few times last season, more than lots of you on here would like to admit.

  • 124 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Aug 5, 2013 at 1:04 PM

Would be a good player for us if we manage to get him “over the line” but this should only be seen as the start of a process of getting the players we need, not the end.

We’re still a few players short, I’ll be less inclined to be critical if we manage to bring all the players we need in.

Any suggestions for good seats? As it’s only Hull I’m hoping there will be a fair few tickets for sale

  • 133 surreytoon // Aug 5, 2013 at 1:15 PM

This Gomis deal is not going to happen.

The shifting goalposts is just playing for time. Most players faced with that level of obstructionism from their club, especially one that has told you to “do one” would be out there screaming blue murder. But why is Gomis quiet? Because it is all a ruse to waste time until Marseilles can put in a credible bid, which is where he wants to go.

Question is when that goes belly up, who will we go for as the second striker? Indications are that it is Bent. I’d rather someone else with a bit more of a future ahead of them.

  • 134 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Aug 5, 2013 at 1:16 PM

    Jesper

In order to address the problems we have in our squad we need to move on the likes of Gosling and Obertan, send our younger players out on loan, and have a competitive bench full of players who are capable of slotting straight into the first XI.

To do that, we’d need to sign about 5/6 players, but we all know that we’d never show that sort of ambition, yet we’re supposed to be delighted for the loan signing of a player who turned us down in January? Strange…

If Remy does sign, having thought about it I would rather we signed Ince instead of Gomis. At least we will have someone at the club to fire in crosses for Cisse and Remy to latch on to. If we do not get Ince but do get Gomis there will be no crosses for either to latch on to.

June 13, 2012 it is the Panther of Lyon, Bafetimbi Gomis who is placed in custody with his former teammate in Saint-Etienne, Yoan Banalouane for rape “by several authors” on a woman of 38 years. The two men spent two nights in custody, confronted with the complainant. Gomis’s apartment was searched. A video of the sexual act, deleted, is sought, without success. Gomis is released.

No one’s slating Debuchy and everyone understands that he needs the time to settle into life at NUFC and get to grips with this league but at the same time we can’t believe that City would be in for him as they have the money to go after and buy anyone in the game so going after a player who hasn’t settled yet seems wide of the mark

    Menez would be tasty, like.

@Ravensd: The Gallowgate! South east corner (Strawberry Corner) usually brings up a canny atmosphere. If you want a beautiful view of the city (on the assumption it’s not hoying it down), and don’t mind climbing the proverbial stairway, Level 7 (north west corner) is almost always a good laugh. Right next to the away fans, vocal, and very few people stand. The trick is to get as close to the away fans as possible, mind. That area is now the supposed “family enclosure”.

Gignac can fu… go away, he is a lazy fat bas…. person!

We need to make sure there is a buyout clause at the end of this loan deal. I’m sure we will, takes out almost all of the financial risk.

Since people are chucking some lineups around I would like:
    ————–Krul————-
    Deb—Colo—Mbiwa—San
    —–Cabaye—-Sissoko—–
    Gouf——-HBA——-Remy
    ————-Cisse————-

Personally think we should just go all out attack.
Have to say though, its the hardest its been in a while to pick.

Fingers crossed he’s holding up the shirt tomorrow, the rape investigation goes away, and we can buy him if he settles in.
He’d was top of my shopping list of the players we might actually get.
I’ve just been watching and waiting, convinced like Bills, Ibiza and others that we can’t have a clue what’s likely to happen next. There’s still a month to go and that could bite both ways. I’d almost take the window closing now. On balance, I think I’d rather have another centre half.
How do we set up? 4-3-3 looks obvious, or even 4-1-3-2. But my kids tell me more about tactics than I actually know. How do you think this will work?

The incident was in June last year, if I recall correctly, and I could find nothing further so I think it was safe to say the matter must have died a death. Cannot see this “story” as being the reason behind the delays in the signing as to date he is an innocent man.

  • 243 Ibizatoon // Aug 5, 2013 at 2:16 PM

Don’t tell me we’re actually signing a player?

Come on Newcastle, get this done and keep going. The fans of this great club need a lift, we deserve it.

So then, obviously at this time all Pardew can give us is words, but so far, so good?

My biggest issues of last year were lack of cover in most areas of the pitch and a lot of that was dealt with in January. If we can get in Remy, another striker and a winger I’d be delighted.

After that it was the shocking levels of fitness within the squad. I’ve forgotten her name, but if this new fitness coach is all she’s cracked up to be then it should mean good things for the upcoming season.

So really, it’s over to Pardew now. Can he deliver what he promises? I am, as always, willing to give him a chance, whether you believe he is capable or not, there is no denying that everything that could go wrong, did go wrong last season.

Could be a good season lads. Saying that, it could be another disaster (or near disaster…trying not to be a drama queen).

I’m interested in gauging what some fans see as a “good season”

If finishing 10th is a “good season” then yes we are capable of having a good season, but personally I think 8th is the minimum we should be aiming for with the players at our disposal, and that anything less than that is a failure.

Faye Downey (new fitness coach) should help improve fitness but I think greater reform of our sports science department is needed to pinpoint why exactly many of our players suffer long term injuries.

It’s over to Pardew, and while I don’t think he’s good enough to get the true potential from most of our good players, I still think he will get us mid table, which is decent, but with a more ambitious, attack minded manager we could be looking at much higher, but we can only play the hand we’re dealt I suppose.

Am I the only one that no longer wants Gomis? It seems way to expensive for a player of his age on the last year of his contract.

Plus our best formation will probably be 4-3-3 with Remy on the left, having the likes of Gomis may prevent this and have us go to a 4-4-2. We’re not a big enough club to rotate players like Chelsea do with Ba and Torres where they take turns.

Gomis just doesn’t seem worth it anymore.

We have Shola, Gouffran, Cisse and Campbell. I’d rather get a young hungry striker that is willing to bide time sitting on the bench as Cisse is rarely injured. Send Cambell out on loan.

    1st Choice – Cisse
    2nd Choice – Gouffran
    3rd Choice – New signing
    4th Choice – Shola.

It would also be far cheaper then paying the fee that Gomis would demand.

If Remy does sign we have to say well done to the club. He is a player of enormous quality.

Our starting line up will be as follows (or atleast it should be)

    ———————- Krul ———————-
    Debuchy – Mbiwa – Coloccini – Santon
    ——- Cabyaye – Tiote – Sissoko ——–
Ben Arfa ——– Cisse ————- Remy

Subs – Elliot, STaylor, Haidara, Anita, Jonas, Marveaux, Gouffran

It certainly is stronger than last year at this point starting 11.

    ———————- Krul ——————-
    Simpson – STaylor – Coloccini – Santon
Ben Arfa – Cabaye – Tiote —– Jonas
    ————– Cisse — Ba ——————-

Or some random formation with the same players!!

  • 258 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Aug 5, 2013 at 2:27 PM

Soldado is a quality player, top goal scoring record at one of the best leagues in the world without very much in the way of creative help.

With better creativity he could really show the world that he is a top top player, so I think Spurs have got a great signing there.

  • 259 Ibizatoon // Aug 5, 2013 at 2:28 PM

Ruddy…As soon as I read “I’m interested in gauging what some fans see as a “good season”” I started breaking out in a cold sweat :)

I think it will differ greatly amongst fans at the minute, especially considering how poor last season turned out.

I don’t disagree with your targets tbh. Top 10 is the minimum that should be expected, but top 8 is really where we should be shooting for and succeeding.

Thank you for reminding me of her name. There is and will always be room for improvement, but at least it’s a start. You know me, not one for radical reform. Small adjustments work just fine imo.

As for having a more ambitious manager, I think we need to look higher than that first for anything to really change.

NUFC proved that the difference between a 5th top team and 5th bottom is very small. Many times, the top team scrapes a win (or through a piece of individual brilliance or even some luck) as was so often the case with the top 4 last year.

Now, my point. NUFC have proven that they’re really close to being a top 5 (or bottom 5!) team. We need 2-3 TOP players and we could be there! JFK was hired to bring in players and he managed to get us a player… on loan! (If it happens) Not good enough, really.

JFK, use all your ‘top football man’ know how and get us what we need. Or quit.

Mike Ashley is said to be over the moon with his clubs’ latest signing.

His club have signed a new striker ahead of the Premier League season, Ashley had this to say on the deal:

“Soldado will be a great player for Spurs, I’m glad we got him in.”

  • 266 BandB // Aug 5, 2013 at 2:33 PM

    Ruddy

New season and hope springs eternal and all that.
Clearly something was badly wrong on the pitch last season, as it was totally disjointed – worse even than some of Allardyce’s plodding straight lines. The squad is still thin.
Trying to put the off-the-field frustrations aside, we have had a fifth and a decent run in Europe. I think we’ll get an early indictation if Jonas is un-droppable again whether Pardew really has it in him to learn from last season’s league performance.

Gomis maybe old, and arguably a back up, but he is another body.

You want options, any addition is nice.

Although I too strongly feel that we are paying over the odds for him, having watched him he is better than Shola.

If it means introducing Gomis instead of Shola whether it by sub or by adding a striker when needed then I am all for completing the signing of Gomis.

Gouffran is another option, on both the wing and up top.

It means we have a versatile squad, one that could compete for top 10. Something that can be made out to be somewhat of a joke when Shola is your 2nd striker!

…… Personally feel if we get Gomis Shola will be moved on.

I suppose ‘arry might let us know in January mind. What a thoughtful chap he can be.

  • 283 pawl250 // Aug 5, 2013 at 2:42 PM

    Rowan

I personally feel the loan deal is their for 1 reason, to protect the club.

As soon as the sensitive situations have been resolved (rape case) then I feel if fit, and playing well Newcastle will activate the clause in January.

I think this is just a way of having him now, but with no risk for the near future.

Its a good deal for the club. One I suspect we will benefit from as we effectively hold all the cards knowing Remy has a release clause, and we have him until July 2014, which makes other clubs hesitate.

  • 284 JLK154 // Aug 5, 2013 at 2:42 PM

I thought that we would have seen some changes in the coaching department this season as we seemed to fail in that department, but fitness is an issue that I am glad we addressed it to a point.

I could reconcile finishing 10th, but I look at the fact that Swansea, West Brom and West Ham finished 8th, 9th and 10th and I think to myself, surely we are better than them?

    BandB

Neither Jonas or Tiote should be starting the first game of the season, and of course new signings will in some part determine whether they will or not.

I think that 5th was the highest we’ll ever achieve under Pardew, even if he was the manager for the next 20 years I doubt we’ll ever match that again under his management.

He’ll be good enough to match Ashley’s targets, unfortunately Ashley’s targets are much lower than that of most fans.

Ruddy…That’s the problem with comparing against others. Can’t you just accept where we and what we are? It’s not like the PL is a competition or anything….ah, back to the drawing board perhaps.

  • 302 Rowan Milsted // Aug 5, 2013 at 2:52 PM

I agree with pawl in that I think it’s a good deal for NUFC and makes a lot of sense. I’d like to think that we’ve included the option to sign him as part of the deal but you just never know.

Having said that, I share the same concerns as Ibiza. We might not know the ins-and-outs until we hear the news that Remy is running back to nest under floppy chops’s wings (and by that I mean the flab of his cheek fat). Still, in that the case the very worst scenario would be that we have a very good striker for a season.

    Ruddy

I’m not so sure about being better than Swansea mate. Top manager, stability, progression for years, well set-up club, forward thinking and play great football. I think they’re going to be real force for seasons to come.

Well seems like we’ve forgotten it’s a competition. With the TV money there is no proper incentive to finish higher up in the table. Yes, each position you finish higher in the table you earn an extra 750k, there the difference between 16th and 6th would be 7.5m, but in order to build a squad capable of challenging the top 6 we need to spend more than that.

It will only become much more profitable to finish higher up the table as long as we crack the top four, but in order to do that we need to spend a considerable amount of money, therefore it is a wasted venture as far as MA is concerned.

As long as it is more profitable to simply be in the league, compared to finishing high in the league we will consistently see mediocrity as far as I am concerned.

    Ruddy

It depends how you classify a ‘big club’ but yeah, I do agree on that as we have a more prestigious history, bigger stadium, higher revenues and much larger fan base. However, they are a team that has been building for some time and look set to continue to do so. As you say, they have an ambitious owner willing to sign good managers and back them up with signings. That will take them places. They are already, in my opinion, a good PL team that I would expect to finish mid-table at least. I believe they will be in the top 8 this season and pushing for a CL spot soon. They have an awesome strike partnership too, and with the excellent football they play they will have no problem scoring goals.

The main thing that will stop them becoming a top 6 team is the fact that they aren’t a huge club in terms of money etc. It’s almost impossible to compete with Chelsea, City etc when you don’t have their kind of money. But if they continue as they are I expect to see them pushing for 5th spot in the next 2/3 seasons. I can’t help admiring them… am also a little jealous.

    mindshaft

All I can logically assume is that we’re trying to get him moved on. He was worth a punt for £3m but it’s not paid off and it really is time for him to go. I hope we can get shot in the next couple of weeks.

As for us getting Hernandez… well, it’s nice to dream! I feel he is somewhat wasted at Man Utd though as he should be playing for a top team and starting nearly every match. He is such a talent.

  • 358 Jamiemac // Aug 5, 2013 at 3:25 PM

Jesus.. I’m seeing teams along the lines of this:

    krull
    deb-mbiwa-collo-sant
    arfa-siss-cabaye-remy
    gomis-cisse

That team would get absolutely battered by anyone with a half decent midfield. Way too attacking. A Tiote/Anita needs to be in there somewhere and Remy is certainly not a LM. I LW maybe but not LM. Our left side would get destroyed. All these attacking players are great to have but there’s no way Gomis, Cisse, Remy, HBA could all play in the same team (unless we’re chasing a goal.) We need to find a balance. Something along the lines of:

    Krul
    Deb – Colo – Mbiwa – Santon
    Cab – Tiote – Sissoko
    HBA – Cisse/Gomis – Remy

That way we’re not relying on Remy and HBA to constantly track back as the three CM’s should be able to cover.

I’m fairly sure Guti will start against Man City. A lot of people will slate Pardew for this. But Guti offers the defensive cover which none of our wingers do which will be needed vs City. I hope some people can see that.

Not attempting to curry his sympathy on that score, just trying to correct him on his error. Being a woman does not mean people need to walk on egg shells around you, this is a forum for all NUFC fans from all walks of life, it would be ironic if a Geordie woman didn’t get the same respect?

Still not a certainty but it is looking increasingly unlikely which is unfortunate.

    Rowan

I agree, they have set the wheels in motion, but the bedrock of doing that is that they have highlighted a style of play they want to use, and only higher players, and most importantly, managers, who will utilise this style of play.

Newcastle United have been without a coherent style of play since the days of SBR and KK before him. Managers come and go, and so to, does the style of play we use.

My biggest gripe with Pardew is that he has not stamped down an ethos in the team, if he signed defensive players, and played a defensive style that suited these players I would not be happy but at least there would be an identity.

Totally, emphatically agree. And I respect them for it. Yes, and while all this has been going on we have been busy sacking managers and making mostly bad decisions for some time. I liked Hughton as he brought us some much-needed stability; I’m glad we haven’t sacked Pardew as I feel that would be counter-productive and even more damaging to the club but I think this season is make-or break for him.

It’s the lack of cohesion, the disjointed nature of our football, and the fact that we fail to play to our strengths, both as a team and on an individual level, that most frustrated me last season. I really hope Pards has seen that and has a new game plan this time round (though the thin squad and constant injuries didn’t help). If we have another relegation scrap this season I won’t be so forgiving.

  • 405 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Aug 5, 2013 at 3:51 PM

    Rowan

Personally I see nothing in Pardew’s management that makes me think he is any better than Hughton. Hughton may not have guided us to 5th place if he was in charge, but he would have done as good a job, if not better, than Pardew last season.

When making a decision to sack a manager you need to replace him with one of much higher quality, we didn’t do that.

If we sacked Pardew we wouldn’t cause that much instability, we really can’t do any worse than last season with the players at our disposal, so when you’re at a low point why not replace the manager and have fresh impetus and direction?

The answer lies with the owner. He knows Pardew is an average manager, but he also knows that Pardew will never get a bigger job than NUFC and as such will keep his mouth shut and do/say whatever MA tells him to say. He won’t bang on the door for transfers and will always try to defend the indefensible.

He will work with whatever pitifully thin squad MA gives him and will laud him as a genius whenever we get close to making a signing, just in case the fans are too stupid to realise that MA is the saviour of this woefully failing club…

This club is a giant, with enormous potential, but sadly, the fat man and Pardew are draining the ambition of a once proud fanbase.

    Jail

    Can you imagine that happening?

    Tads,

I think there were enough mitigating factors last season to have made it impossible for Mike (Ashley…don’t want any more misunderstandings) to sack Pardew.
Pardew had to accept his squad wasn’t big enough to meet all the demands of the season.
The players looked demotivated and lost, close up. Square pegs in round holes, and a tactical system which seemed to leave Cisse isolated and invited the ball back onto us.
We were very static, and we STILL look very static, and everyone seems to just stand and watch when Ben Arfa gets the ball.
I think it is down to tactics, above all else, and that is down to Pardew.
I think Pardew sets us up as if we were Charlton, and his mind-set is that of a bottom of the table manager, looking to get a draw and maybe grab a win, regardless of the opposition. His recent statement seemed to reflect that is how he sees things.
And if that is how he still sees things, its hard to imagine how we can achieve better, unless the players can marshal some confidence from among themselves. The big difference to me, between last season and the one before, was confidence.

  • 457 Rooster // Aug 5, 2013 at 4:23 PM

JToon, Toby is top drawer, I agree, Saylor isn’t but hes better than willy, its a tricky one, they love Taylor at the toon JK likes him a lot, I see saylor as a wee bit of a liability at times on the pitch and he also has a big gob, which he opened many times last season, and his words did not back up his actions, so yes I would go with you on your suggestion, don’t think NUFC will though.

@448 think if we get remy and another say gomis we can have a good season ,its so hard to call i dont think there is alot of diffrence from say 6th or 7th to say 15th ,the points will probs be so tight also like last year ,if we get of to a good start with momentum i would not rule out 5th if i was gonna put a wager on it i would say 9th but then who knows we could suprise everyone and break into that top 4 depends on how our team gels and how quick our new signings bed in as i really believe our first 11 if we get who we are supposed to get is as good as anyones outside the top four it just takes a bit of luck and pardew needs to get his tactics right this year i thought he was poor last year with team selection
