In the same way that Lyon have complained to the French Professional Football League about Marseilles attempts to derail that Gomis transfer to Newcastle United, maybe Newcastle will have to protest some of Laurent Blanc’s rather unprofessional and uncalled for comments today about Yohan Cabaye.
Yohan Cabaye – in action this pre-season
It’s not the first time Blanc has openly talked about wanting Yohan Cabaye at PSG, and he has even had the cheek to say that Tottenham are also interested in the 27 year-old Newcastle central midfielder.
In early July Alan Pardew complained bitterly about Blanc doing his transfer business in the media, but then unfortunately in the same interview Pardew went on to say that Newcastle were after Remy, Gomis and Bent this summer. 🙁
Here’s what Laurent Blanc has said about Cabaye today:
“He is a very good player, I have not changed my mind.”I read that Tottenham are also interested.” “I hope he will be at a big club come September.”
It’s always bad when a club does their transfer business in public, and unfortunately that is what Newcastle have done this summer, and we hope that will change in the future.
Blanc’s comments are nothing less than a clear attempt to unsettle Cabaye at Newcastle, not to mention his insinuation that Newcastle are not a big club, even though we finished 5th last year in the Premier League – the best football league in the world.
Newcastle have every right to complain about the new PSG manager trying to unsettle one of the club’s very best players.
But Yohan Cabaye will cost £25M, so if Tottenham or PSG have that kind of money to dish out for Yohan, then we suppose Mike Ashley would let him leave, but if that happens Newcastle must bring in a suitable replacement.
Cabaye was an excellent Graham Carr capture from Lille two years ago, and he cost only €5M (£4.25M at today’s exchange rate), and since joining Newcastle he has been capped 23 times by his country and become a regular in the French side.
Yohan has improved immensely while at Newcastle, and in two season he’s played 73 times for the club with 11 goals and 11 assist, and he has also been linked with a possible move to Manchester United this summer.
But we would still be very surprised if Cabaye leaves Newcastle this summer.
What do you think?

Comment #43I like cabaye and think he’s a good player, but I also think he’s over rated. He like many others was poor last season, but that could have been down to personal issues and tactics etc. 25 mill though would be too good to turn down, if psg money plus Sakho would do nicely.

Comment #46Thanks for the links to the full article – puts those comments in context. I was also a bit peeved after reading the edited version but that’s actually quite misleading.
So, the Gomis saga takes another twist. Meanwhile orrible arry tries to get Defoe. I hope he fails in everything he does.

I would love Iker Munain at this club, but Man U were quoted 20million last summer for him, and I doubt he would come to us even if we were willing to match the fee.

for me a big club is all about history like liverpool and man utd.
When people say they want to join a big club like city, psg, monaco…they mean a rich club that is going to compete in the league.

Comment #52The big club debate is always a funny subject. Leeds fans think they are a big club based on their history.
For us i think the minimum aim should be top ten every season.

Comment #54Newcastle are a big club but not a successful club.
In Premiership only ManU, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea are big and successful clubs based on trophies won and positions in the league over a number of years, although both Liverpool and Arsenal are going through a lean trophy spell.
Man City haven’t really got a trophy track record over the last 10 years but are coming up fast.

Comment #55Blanc is a knob for saying these type of things about our club. We have the very best fans and support filling st James park every week. We have some brilliant players. More then capable of a top ten finish this season maybe more. I really hope PSG go into debt nd go bankrupt leaving this tosser out of a job.
Oh I forgot PSG can’t even fill half there ground. Hmm how loyal are ur fans blanc? And if it weren’t for this billionaire PSG would have no money and wud b out of business like a French Plymouth or Portsmouth it makes me laugh.

Comment #56We really need to get a move on with these transfers like, the season is getting closer by the minute. I am glad we have brought in Remy but we are still short of a Left footed winger and possibly another striker.
If Cisse gets injured in training that means we only have Shola & Gouffran for City.

– he doesn’t expect to buy any more players
– they are not pursuing Cabaye
– Newcastle are a big club
Much more interesting is his comments that Sakho might leave. Get him please Joe.

Comment #58Ha, that’ll learn me for not reading all the previous articles before posting. That was hardly breaking news @33!
On Cabaye, he was poor last season and almost anonymous in some games but I think the combination of many poor individual performances, fatigue and missing players were to blame. Our entire team under performed for various reasons; even Krul was far from his best. I think we lost a lot of confidence.
It looks like we’re going to keep him this summer and that’s a good achievement. We need another 2 or 3 in, which we almost certainly won’t get, but keeping the likes of Cabs, Krul & HBA will be very important should we do so. I’m hoping that a pro like Cabaye, ahead of a world cup, will be busting his gut to be back at his best this season.

Yes, it’s a strange and never ending debated.
Newcastle fans often quote the size of our ground and its capacity to justify the club being a ‘Big Club’ but Queens Park is possibly a bigger club than ours and a bigger club than all the English Premiership grounds except Old Trafford and The Emirates, but no one would ever rank them among the elite of the UK.

Comment #64Al Gharafa announced the signing of Lisandro Lopez from Lyon on their website. Which probably means Gomis ain’t coming.
Not really that bothered, we were getting absolutely ripped off for a 28 year old in the last year of his contract. Hopefully that money now goes towards a young striker other than Bent and a winger.

Comment #69For the record we are the ninth most successful club of all time, take away Abromovich and the Mansours we’d be sitting in seventh, we have the third biggest stadiumbin the country with one of the biggest fanbases , we have in the past broken the world transfer record and are currently the 20th richest club in the world from a list of thousands despite one of the meanest owners.BIG CLUB.

You don’t have to be in the top four to be a big club. Outside the top four the bigger teams IMO are Liverpool,Spurs,Everton & Newcastle.
Some people are forgetting that Cabaye was suffering from depression last year as well. That has to affect your performances.

I’d agree with that but let’s be honest the only thing really making us big is the fan base and stadium. We’ve flirted with success but never quite crossed that line and won a cup or the league when really we should have.

For me there are so many criteria for labelling a club as a ‘big club’ and a lot of it is so subjective that I tend to avoid the debate but you have managed to put it quite clearly and concisely there. I’m surprised that we are the 9th kost successful club of all time though… based on average league standings? I’d be interested to unpick that one a bit.
I’ve always reasoned that our stadium and fan base makes us something of a big club. We have a global fanbase, too. It would be nice to cite some trophies though…
