Newcastle Get Shrimps In League Cup Draw

2:26 pm, Thursday, August 8th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 39 Comments

Newcastle United have been drawn at Morecombe in the second round of the League Cup (Capital One Cup) and the games are are due to be played on the week starting

Newcastle have never played Morecambe (nicknamed the Shrimps) before and the two local cups – the League Cup and the FA Cup are two competitions Newcastle will take seriously this season, in an attempt to win something for the first time since 1969.

That would be something!

Birmingham won it in 2011 when they were also relegated from the Premier league, and Swansea won it last season, so there’s no reason why Newcastle cannot have a good run in this Cup if we play a strong team – and think like a small club – at least in this competition.

It also leads to a place in the Europa League.

Here is the full draw that was announced today:

Carlisle v Leicester
Doncaster v Leeds
Nottingham Forest v Millwall
Sunderland v MK Dons
West Brom v Newport
Bristol City v Crystal Palace
Peterborough v Reading
Barnsley v Southampton
Burton v Fulham
Burnley v Preston
Liverpool v Notts County
Norwich v Bury
Leyton Orient v Hull City
Everton v Stevenage
Stoke v Walsall
Huddersfield v Charlton
Aston Villa v Rotherham
Tranmere v Bolton
Morecambe v Newcastle
QPR v Swindon
Derby v Brentford
Watford v Bournemouth
Yeovil v Birmingham
Accrington v Cardiff
West Ham v Cheltenham

  • 6 JackButler // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:34 PM

In his head Pardew has the ability to turn water into wine, walk on water and beat Brighton in the cup……..the reality however is very different

  • 7 Thump // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:35 PM

@jesper: Only the FA Cup, according to the allmighty.

  • 8 DokToon // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:35 PM

    good morning all…

may i ask the difference between league cup and FA cup… or capital one cup?

  • 9 JAMSHA // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:37 PM

guess capital cup = league cup

  • 10 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:38 PM

Dok…the difference mate is Pardew πŸ˜‰

  • 11 JackButler // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:39 PM

The FA cup is the most prestigious domestic cup competition in the football world, the League Cup, known as the Capitol One Cup is no where near as prestigious and most top clubs put out their second side’s or youngsters as they see it as a distraction to their European ambitions

    That’s us out….

  • 13 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:41 PM

Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Cup now there’s a Cup πŸ˜‰ Just ask Joke lol

  • 14 toonarmydownsouth // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:43 PM

@GFN_France: RMC reporting Aliadiere is actually fairly close to a Lyon move. €5.5/6M quoted. Would be a replacement for Lisandro and NOT Gomis. #OL

@PaulDummett: Players v staff paintballing!! Whos brave enough to hit the gaffa? #notme

@adamcampbell_: Time for paintballing players Vs staff..this could get interesting !

@nufcfans: French journalist @LaurensJulien on @talkSPORT – Yohan Cabaye wants to play at “higher level” after 2 years “loyalty” at #NUFC. PSG likely.

My little tw@er round up complete πŸ˜‰

defo think someone will bid for cabs like, but i know that Ashley will on take no less than 15 mill imo.

also think cabs would want to go aswell if psg etc came in for him.

and why wouldnt he- more money and champs league.

yet both cup winners get into the europa league

i personally prefer the format of the league cup and enjoy that only the finalists go to wembley…also it being midweek makes it more interesting for some reason.

  • 17 JackButler // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:45 PM

You mention the Johnston’s Paint Trophy and Pardew gets all misty eye’d as he relives that wonderful, wonderful day πŸ˜€

  • 18 DokToon // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:45 PM

so basically league cup is for the junior varsity players?

thanks, when i dont knwo something, i prefer to ask… i do knwo the FA cup, remeber when the toon played manure in the semis was it 05? i had to buy it on PPV for 30 bucks… like i was gonna miss watching that!! wished for a btter finish, but that was a great run, hoping we make a charge like that again…

    thanks JB and jesper πŸ™‚

    nice little round up there.

and whats this loyalty cabaye talks of? he joined us and collects a good wage to kick a ball, inconsistently at that, around a field.

  • 20 toon kk // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:46 PM

On paper we should walk this but with Pards and his sit back and hoofball tactics we will make hard work of it, so it wouldn’t surprise me if we’re beat.

    Afternoon lads.

Morecambe is a good draw. If we put a good team out we will be fine. However – we won’t and we will probably either lose, or scrape through with a last minute extra time Shola winner. Blimey I’m optimistic this morning.

RE Laurent Blancs comments. I hate this man. I have always had a bit of a soft spot for PSG, and this man in charge just ruins it for me. Ignorant, arrogant and outspoken.

some teams like swansea last year take the league cup very seriously as they see it as a good chance to win a cup as bigger clubs play the kids/fringe players.

  • 24 JackButler // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:47 PM

It always amazes me mate that certain clubs look at it as a distraction rather than an opportunity to lift some silverware, perhaps if they had been starved as long as we have they’d approach it differently

  • 25 Conaldo (The Wizard - Member of the Triangle of Intelligence) // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:47 PM

    this afternoon*

  • 26 Ibizatoon // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:49 PM

Afternoon….I really wish we had tried to get Blanc as our manager….the tw@.

That is all. As you were. Enjoy your day. x

  • 27 toonarmydownsouth // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:50 PM

Tbf haven’t seen or heard the interview so have no idea where this bloke has pulled that little statement from but yeah when someone signs a 5 year contract 2 seasons hardly count as loyalty!!!

  • 28 DevonToon // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:50 PM

    Brighton got knocked out πŸ™‚

  • 29 aidytoon9 // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:50 PM

Blanc is just testing the water to see how interested cabs is to join. He should put in a bid instead of mouthing off!!!!

  • 30 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:50 PM

    JB… πŸ˜€

    Dok…well not entirely mate!

The Carling Cup is open to all 92 teams in the Football League (Premiership, League Championship, League One & League Two) while the FA Cup is open to all teams which also includes the non-league team.

  • 31 aidytoon9 // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:51 PM

not many players are loyal these days.

  • 32 Transfer Sage // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:52 PM

It always makes me laugh when clubs or players complain.

Clubs will sell a player if he underperforms or gets big money offer and a player will want to move if they get a chance of money/higher level.

The double standards by clubs and players is always funny I find.

  • 33 Transfer Sage // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:53 PM

yeh i know, swansea did it well last year

  • 34 Tino99 // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:55 PM

Who could we buy if we sold Cabaye for 15 -20 mil. I wouldnt be too fussed if we sold him. We need a creative midfielder like a scholes who can dink it around the field

  • 35 DokToon // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:55 PM

again my thanks to educating me this morning πŸ™‚

now if anyone has any questions for anything stateside, im here for your amusement lol πŸ™‚

  • 36 Tino99 // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:56 PM

I am getting fairly annoyed that we havent offloaded players like obertan etc. I also hope pardew is going to be sacked soon!!!!
I dont want to sound pessimistic but city are going to destroy us they put 5 past AC Milan in 35 mins.

  • 37 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Aug 8, 2013 at 2:59 PM

    Dok…you’re welcome mate πŸ˜‰

…are you open for all sorts of questions? lol

Tino…I don’t think anyone want him!

  • 38 DokToon // Aug 8, 2013 at 3:07 PM

depends jesper, lol… g or pg rated ones anyway lol

  • 39 toonluvva // Aug 8, 2013 at 3:15 PM

I was getting quite excited about the Capital 1 cup until you mentioned it was a way into europe.

Ashley won’t like that. Another EL campaign would mean bolstering our squad or risking relegation as per last season.

That would leave Mr Ashley with a dilemma does he either spend more, or risk losing his TV revenues for promoting his true love SportsDirect so I expect a speedy exit from this competition.

Pardew will no doubt have a whole stream of excuses lined up, but I think he’ll welcome another entry into his eventual constructive dismissal case if anyone puts pressure on him to play weakened sides IMO.
