No Sign Of These Top Two Youngsters In Pre-Season

10:49 am, Friday, August 9th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 23 Comments

20 year-old French U21 International Massadio Haidara and 19 year-old England U20 international Gael Bigirimana are two of the most promising youngsters on Tyneside, but we haven’t seen them at all in pre-season yet.

Gael Bigirimana – still getting fit?

Gael Bigirimana was in the England U20 squad for the FIFA U20 World Cup in Turkey over the summer, but he hardly got a game, as England managed to finish bottom of their group.

And Gael returned to Newcastle just before the pre-season game at Blackpool, so he was not included in the squad, but we were a little surprised he didn’t take part in the game at Ibrox on Tuesday night.

Of course central midfield is a strong area for Newcastle these days, with players like Cabaye, Tiote, Sissoko and Vurnon Anita fighting it out for those starting positions, and the squad is stronger than it was last season.

And we’ve also seen nothing from our new 20 year-old Massadio Haidara, and it looks like local lad Paul Dummett may be staying on Tyneside to fight it out with Italian Davide Santon for that left back spot, and certainly Paul has been impressive this summer.

That could mean that Massadio is sent on loan through January, and if that’s the case then there should be a number of clubs after him, and there’s no reason why he couldn’t get a loan deal at a Premier League club.

We’re not sure what Alan Pardew will do with Bigirimana this seaosn, and he was impressive in his first season at the club, but he needs to get games to keep developing.

We could even see both youngsters sent out on loan.

At the moment Shane Ferguson is on a season long loan at Birmingham, James Tavernier is at Shrewsbury Town until the end of the month, Mehdi Abeid is at Panathinaikos for the season, Michael Richardson is at Accrington Stanley until the end of the month, and Conor Newton is back at St Mirren until the turn of the year.

And for the record Bigi has played 25 times for Newcastle with one goal, and Massadio has played 8 times for the Newcastle first team.

Comments welcome.

Perhaps they’ve been locked in the jesmond with all of our other “problems”?

I’m looking forward to seeing a lot more of both of these guys. Hope they won’t be restricted to only cup runs this year, and get at least some first team from the Bench. Both look up to the task.

Massido is going to be a great player. Loan to a prem team only though

I hope we don’t loan out Haidara cos I think he can challenge Santon for that starting LB slot now. Also, think he has the potential to follow Bale’s footsteps and move from LB to a more attacking LW role. From what I’ve seen in his short NUFC career he looks to have the potential. Very promising player indeed.

We actually have a really big squad. Maybe more quantity than quality in some positions but non-the-less.

    SQUAD

    Krul / Eliot

    Debuchy / Gosling
    Colo / Saylor
    M’Biwa / Willo
    Santon / Haidara / Dummet

    Sissoko / Bigirama
    Anita / Tiote

    Cabaye / Marveaux

    Ben Arfa / Obertan
    Cisse / Gouffran / Campbell
    Remy / Vuksic / Jonas

    MANAGER

    Pardew / Anyone !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 6 ERER // Aug 9, 2013 at 11:10 AM

They were just seen at the pre season paintball event with the entire squad +Remy

    Bit of a non-stroy again

I’m not sure Haidara is Santon’s understudy. From the accolades from the coaching staff and his recent performances Dummett looks ahead of Haidara.

    Nice problem.

Either dummet or massadio need loaning out this season, palace or somewhere like that would be perfect, easy to keep an eye on and at the level we need them at, not to mention both could do a job there.

    rotonda

correct me if im wrong but im sensing your not a pardew fan hahaha

  • 13 Rotonda heights // Aug 9, 2013 at 11:14 AM

I think even with Pardew with the size and quality of the squad top 10 should be well achievable. With a football manager maybe top 6/7.

  • 14 ToonDownSouth // Aug 9, 2013 at 11:15 AM

    Rotonda

I think it’s a more complete squad than most PL teams have really. A proper winger and a decent young defender and striker, and it’d be pretty much done.

Not many teams have that much competition in the CF position really, since it’s all about the wide forwards now – if we had a trio of Cisse, Remy and Gomis, Pardew would be luckier than all but 3 or 4 other managers in the PL in that respect.

    Quitesimple

Is that a FFvii reference in your ps id?

  • 16 Slank // Aug 9, 2013 at 11:16 AM

Bigi is great. Very mature for his age but I’m not entirely convinced he can replace Tiote. In the central midfield pecking order he would probably come after Cabaye, Tiote, Sissoko and Marveaux.

    Still, a nice problem.

  • 17 ToonDownSouth // Aug 9, 2013 at 11:18 AM

I mean seriously, which PL teams have central midfield depth comparable to ours – Cabaye, Tiote, Sissoko, Anita, then Marveaux and Ben Arfa as more attacking options.

Gosling has been disappointing, but the fact that he’s probably 7th or 8th in most fans pecking orders – behind Bigirimana and maybe Vuckic – speaks volumes.

  • 18 Ibizatoon // Aug 9, 2013 at 11:19 AM

    Slank…I’m noticing a theme with you today…

  • 19 Rotonda heights // Aug 9, 2013 at 11:19 AM

    Wolfshead

What on earth makes you think that lol !

There’s a little person on my shoulder keeps telling me don’t say these nasty things about Pardew but then I think what the hell, he’s made me suffer and almost lose interest in something I love.

Pardew strikes me as the type of guy who would sleep with his best mate’s wife / girlfriend and not bat an eyelid. Pardew has to be the most oily, self absorbed mendacious slime ever.

  • 20 quitesimple // Aug 9, 2013 at 11:19 AM

    Seannufc87

It certainly is, greatest game of all time

  • 21 Ibizatoon // Aug 9, 2013 at 11:22 AM

Rotonda…I don’t want you to read too much in to this extra attention I’m giving you since my return, however…

“Pardew has to be the most oily, self absorbed mendacious slime ever.”

Nice to see you still have a good tight grip on that delusion we were discussing the other day.

  • 22 Slank // Aug 9, 2013 at 11:26 AM

    TDS @ 13

Not only do we have a more complete squad than most PL teams but they are probably more settled and bedded in than teams like Sunderland, Norwich, Hull or some others who have had a huge turnover of players this summer.

Additionally, we don’t have all the angst that is happening with Liverpool, ManU, Spurs and Arsenal about their key and most influential players coming, going or not. With so many players from these teams making comments it looks like divided loyalties and some turmoil in their camps.

  • 23 chuck // Aug 9, 2013 at 11:46 AM

It’s nonsense to say either Haidara or dummet can challeng Santon .
Who is way ahead of either.
Though Haidarra is a decent back-up, who will eventually become a talented FB, we haven’t seen enough of Dumett to project his future yet.
