Video – Villas-Boas Talks About His Mentor Sir Bobby Robson

8:29 pm, Saturday, August 10th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 28 Comments

Today is the Sir Bobby Robson National Football Day, and it’s fitting that Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas talks about when he worked with his mentor at Porto and then at Barcelona, when Jose Mourinho was also a coach under the great one – and we aren’t talking about Jose.

Just got back from the match and I am pleased to say I am now nearing the point of optimisism for the coming season.

HBA was a bit of a passenger in this match during open play, but his corner taking was consistently good and the ball was always put into dangerous areas. It also looked like we put some thought into our corners instead of the hit and hope style we had be opting for.

Shola was being his old self and couldn’t trap a bag of cement, however cisse’s first touch was exceptional for most of the game.
We relied a lot less on the long ball than I have seen in the past as both centre backs looked to play to feet even if Elliot in the first half didn’t. Krul did look to play to feet when he came on though and I am pleasantly surprised about that.

Dummet looks to be a real prospect as he looked composed in both having the ball and defending. He also delivered the best cross of the night.

So i am now looking forward to the coming season

Cisse had NO SERVICE what so ever. Tell a lie, he got ONE decent cross from Dummett, that was it. But….we still potter on taking our time bringing in wingers to give us width. Shambles of a pre season!

  • 6 Yohan Kebab // Aug 10, 2013 at 8:43 PM

like the look of dummett going forward and defending, i think we should play hba infront of him on the left, we look unbalanced when playing with right footers on the left

would potentially play santon infront of debuchy on the right

  • 7 aidytoon9 // Aug 10, 2013 at 8:47 PM

    Nice words from avb.
Drummet does look a decent prospect for this season and it will be interesting to see how he develops.

Cabaye will be gone by then ;-)

  • 11 cestriasteve // Aug 10, 2013 at 8:57 PM

Had to work today so did not go to the game. Pardew came into my store this morning and I asked him if we were any closer to Gomis to which he smiled and said no.

  • 12 Yohan Kebab // Aug 10, 2013 at 8:57 PM

wtf the club is turning into a sports direct outlet, club shop selling arsenal shirts

  • 13 cestriasteve // Aug 10, 2013 at 8:59 PM

Toon 1978, Cisse would be amazing playing with great wingers I feel.

  • 14 Oleg G // Aug 10, 2013 at 9:04 PM

If he and Jose are such fans of Sir Robson, why one of them isn’t a manager of Newcastle ? :(

  • 15 wolfshead@toon // Aug 10, 2013 at 9:06 PM

who would want to work under a passionless killjoy scrooge like ashley unless they were desperate

  • 19 lesh // Aug 10, 2013 at 9:26 PM

AVB, Mourinho…. Two who’ve got promising careers in them. Just a pity either of em couldn’t have followed owl Bobby ar SJP. Ah well, the great man did try to persuade Jose to join him and crikey, just think what if he had. What succession. Ne’er mind eh..

‘Mmm, I like this guy and am gonna ask Joe to sign him, no matter what the cost.’. Alan Pardew on Felipe Pardo!

Aidy – sack Pardew? Can we take it that you want the dynamic duo of Kinnear and Harford to take charge?

Beattie – why did Ashley sack Allardyce? Because the fans didn’t like him and he brought Keegan in. The decline was started!

Now, perhaps the sack Pardew brigade might like to dwell on that? Or more likely, they won’t!

  • 20 Bearsize // Aug 10, 2013 at 9:29 PM

Pardew will be sacked if we are in relegation zone come oct/nov. MA needs to protect his investment. Its all quite scary really. We always seem to get a top 6 team for the first game of season and the last game. Might be an interesting stat if someones got the time ;)

Just back in, alright game no surprises really, too may subs and changes to gauge this as a season-opener performance.

minuses – Jonas may have felt the effects of his Rangers outing shame as he was doing a lot of work down his side, got a few good crosses in. Next minus is Hatem who was only good when he didnt have to actually move, carrying more timber than Wickes these days. Marveaux looks like he doesnt belong poor lad. Obertan looked good and played some neat stuff, we will probably not get rid of him now. Colo’s back pass I will put down to him just recovering in time for the game. Sissoko – meh.
Debuchy – is he getting slower?

Plusses – Dummet good awareness and confident going forward. Cabaye looked livelier than for a long time. Putting Anita and Goufran on sparked more passing and brought Hatem into it even.

All in al pretty ok, no big worries but the big test is City.

  • 22 Toonacious T // Aug 10, 2013 at 9:37 PM

    Pokat
Did Obertan not come on in the 87th minute? How many times did he get on the ball? Why does Ed say HBA looked fit and two posters who were at the game say the complete opposite? I do like that new kit we wore though!

  • 23 kevymartins // Aug 10, 2013 at 9:53 PM

Wtf is people on about ”underperforming”?

First of all it’s pre season
2nd I though the lads played exceptionally well
3rd Braga aren’t a standerd team, As everyone knows leagues like the Portuguese league they have a different style of play Benfica etc. They like to play with ball pass around like Barxa therefor you are not gona see much possession. Now City might play like that but most of the BPL won’t, Braga would prob hammer half the teams in our league.

  • 24 bollance // Aug 10, 2013 at 9:55 PM

Watched the game on Internet. Game of two halves. First half slow build up, lots of balls going square or backwards. Second half when cabaye came on we played more balls forward which led to us opening up space in their half, instead of tip toeing around the centre circle.

I doubt pardew tells the team to play so negatively but u need confidence in your passing and team mates to play balls forward. Still think we are lacking confidence to play a slick passing game at speed like vs west brom, what now seems like a long time ago.

  • 25 archaeomag // Aug 10, 2013 at 9:55 PM

    @ Heslop Toon
Thx good observations; nice to have some positives.

  • 26 kevymartins // Aug 10, 2013 at 9:55 PM

Drwaing 1-1 in a pre season match against a team that plays like swansea isn’t so bad as people think.

  • 27 toon kk // Aug 10, 2013 at 10:07 PM

We played decent, everyone blames Pardew, although I don’t agree with his tactics the players have to take responsibility as well. To many fans think we’re this top side badly managed. We’re a average side badly managed. Yes we have a few quality players but we’ll never win anything unless MA seriously invests, which ain’t gonna happen.
So my advice is don’t expect to much.

Would love AVB to manage our club, he can carry out the SBR legacy and make us a great club once again
