Joe Kinnear Tracking This Young Belgian Striker

Joe Kinnear was pictured with Newcastle fan Matt_Skeen at the Newcastle Central Station this morning, and that news is doing the rounds on the internet, and according to Matt, Joe was on his way to Belgium to look at a young 6’2″ striker who was 21 and playing in Belgium.

Joe also said we were after both Scott Sinclair and Tom Ince, but we wish Joe would be less outgoing about the players we may be after. 🙁

Michy Batshuayi

Michy Batshuayi – 19 year-old Belgium U21 International striker

On July 12th as part of our series of looking at some good young players  Newcastle may be wanting to sign now. or some time in the future, we profiled Michy Batshuayi, but at the time said there was no evidence that Newcastle were interested in the player.

Well this lad could well be the one Joe is watching, and in any case Joe was never good on details – 21 years old and 6’2″ tall – this lad is 19 and 5’11” tall – close – but maybe he mentioned 21 because Michy, who turns 20 in October, has already played for the Belgian U21 side – so it’s possible.

He joined Belgium club Standard Liege back in 2008, after playing for both FC Brussels, his home town club, and RSC Anderlecht.

Batshuayi has so far scored 21 goals in 71 appearances for Standard Liege, after making his first team debut back in February, 2011, in the 4-1 loss against KAA Gent, when he was 17 years old.

Last season Michy scored 12 goals and had five assists for Liege in 36 appearances, and we always thought it would be good if Newcastle could bring in one more experienced striker – like Bafe Gomis – and then a young up-and-coming striker like Batshuayi.

Michy has played 5 times for the Belgium U21 side, but he’s just signed a new contract through June of 2017.

He’s listed on as being worth around €3.5M, which is about £3M at today’s conversion rate, and here’s some video of the youngster in action, that we showed in that article last month.

We don’t know if this is the lad who Joe Kinnear is watching, but it’s a decent bet he’s the one.

What do you think – and are there any other good young strikers in Belgium who match Joes’ description?

Comments welcome.

Note – I’ll be without a home Internet connection until Wednesday, so the articles may be a bit sketchy during that time, as I frequent Starbucks and McDonalds. 😀

Lets be honest here, JFK would have problems remembering what day of the week it was, on a good day!!

He could be on his way anywhere, or nowhere. Since when was he promoted to Scout as well as Idiot-in-Chief at SJP??

Whats more, there is just no way is he going to be able to pronounce that name without collecting a slap for his efforts!! This man is not safe to be let out without his nurse in attendance to whom Joe should be handcuffed for his own protection.

It is not obvious Gomis wants to come here. He preferred Marseilles according to some reports until recently. I think him and his agents are dragging their feet to see if Marseilles will bid for him.

May be he would prefer to stay in France, or more likely he can see that especially with Remy signed and the Wonga problem with Cisse resolved that he might not play regularly enough to make the French squad for Brazil. Was it only a coincidence that some of these problems only appeared once it was clear Remy was going to sign.

I suspect also once the club knew they had Remy “over the line” then there was some cooling towards giving into all of Gomis/Aulas’ demands. They have kept the option open, that he might still come at the end of the window. But by now Kinnear should have been talking to other options.

Only watched the highlights but he looks to have serious potential

Get him signed for about half the price of Gomis and put the money saved to get Ince !

Imagine if by the end of the week we had this guy , Sinclair and Ince signed ?? I would love it as the blog would go into meltdown

I’m afraid JK has outsmarted some people. He has fed you fake info. No way on earth will he tell a random fan the real target after him+others complained how much harder it is when deals come in the news.
We make jokes about JK been stupid but noway He forgot the name of the target, and got the age wrong? Yet the height right? Seems farfetched.

Sorry i just dont believe JK is actually that stupid. If we are after this lad he purposely said the wrong info, but theres a good chance he isnt even coming to belgium.

All for buying young, cheap players with potential but we defo need a seasoned, experienced performer for this season. One week to City game. Not looking forward to that particular reality check. Would love to be proven wrong of course.

@potski Sissoko said in an interview that gomis would love to come to nufc. :S seems strange for him to mention it if gomis doesnt want a move surely he would of just not said anything about gomis

The good thing about Joe Kinnear is that he got rid of the players that needed to go but his negotiation skills and attention to detail are horrible on the otherhand i wouldnt mind seeing DL back to take care of our transfers for Incomming players and Joe Kinnear to oversee players that need to leave

    Graeme @ 2……

Very cruel and disrespectful to our Director of Football. It was wrong of you to let slip that he has a nurse tending for him. That’s personal and private information and you should be ashamed for letting that cat out of the bag.

Must say though, I share your concerns about him and am surprised that he hasn’t been found out, yet!

This player looks good on football manager I always buy him. Seriously, though, one player I would like to see at Newcastle is agbonlahor. He has no international pedigree I know, but he is lightning fast, can play either wing or as a center-forward and he is English – well that’s just me
