Sky Sports News is reporting that Aston Villa striker Darren Bent is having a medical right now at Fulham Football Club.
Darren Bent – having medical at Fulham
This has been confirmed by Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert, but it’s not for a permanent transfer but for a season-long loan deal, much like what Newcastle have done to get Loic Remy to Tyneside.
This is disappointing news, after we heard today that Bent was very keen to come to Newcastle to be reunited with his old boss at Charlton Athletic – Alan Pardew.
Of the three strikers Newcastle have been after this summer, Bent is probably the third choice among many Newcastle fans, after French Internationals Loic Remy and Bafe Gomis, although why wouldn’t Newcastle do a loan deal for Bent?
We have to assume that Newcastle are aware of what’s going on in London and didn’t want to bring Darren Bent to Newcastle on loan.
So it could be that Newcastle have missed out on both Bafe Gomis and Darren Bent, so who do you think is on Newcastle’s B list of strikers?

Comment #82Regarding Moses… I dont like the idea about playing other clubs players into form. So unless we have an option to buy, no thanks.

Comment #84VanToonMan – Jonas and Shola are whipping boys for the club’s perceived lack of progression, but they still influence league results – despite your’s and others complete lack of grace in failing to rise above the mob mentality to admit to.
Shola’s a better finisher than Gouffran, and happy to come on for the closing stages of games – where he still makes an impact from the bench i.e. Benfica and QPR last season. No offers came in for Shearer in 10 years- nor have they for Colo, Cabaye, Tiote, Cisse or Ben Arfa – does that mean they would have added nothing to other club’s squad options?
In your head Campbell is ready and able – and whilst it’s very difficult argue with someone operating under a private fallacy – he’s really not at all.

Consider this…you know how much money the club has spent in recent seasons on some top players. Add up the transfer fees of Cabaye, Tiote, Cisse, Ba, MYM, Sissoko, Debuchy, Goofy, Anita and they really don’t add up to much. Now if the club had instead gone out and signed an obvious top midfielder instead of Tiote, then they wouldn’t have had the money to sign a couple of other players.
So…we know that the club has limited money to spend and we know they are looking for value for money. Unless you believe that links to the likes of Gomis are just propaganda (in which case there is no hope for us having a meaningful conversation), then the club is trying to sign players but will not overpay.
I think as fans, we can tend to become blinkered and see things only from our club’s perspective. I think also too many people on here play Championship Manager and tend to think that our club can behave differently to every other club.
For every good player valued reasonably, there will be literally dozens of potential clubs for him to go to. For a very good player then maybe there will be less but some of them can offer European football. I don’t see how it is easy to get players of the quality of Cisse or Cabaye to our club without paying huge fees. The likes of Southampton and Norwich have paid big money for players but they have significant weaknesses elsewhere. I’d say that if Remy was fit then we have a pretty strong squad good enough for top 8.
I want to see us sign at least one more attacking player this window and I’d like to see us challenge the top 6 again but we know the club has to operate within its budget. I still think there must be room to squeeze in a signing around the fee and wages of Gomis and I hope this happens, but I don’t want to see us sign out 6th choice for 50% more money just because we haven’t got anyone else in. That’s what happened under the previous owners and it left us in a mess.

Where do you see us in five years time? Will we be a top ten club or a team in the championship? MA clearly doesn’t want to invest very much in the squad, he has no money spare the club is still deep in debt. Could be worrying times, what do you think?

5 years? I see us firmly established in the top 10 of the Premier League. Hopefully a similar status to Spurs by then and hopefully we are in a fantastic position to capitalise should any of the current top 6 drop. The problem is that the top 6 are seriously wealthy compared to the rest so it will take consistent good decisions from us and a couple of really bad seasons from one of them for us to genuinely displace one of them. We need to be solidly in the top 6 to have a chance of consecutive CL appearances and that’s going to be seriously tough.

If we had only signed Remy but also fired Pardew and brought in a new manager how would the feeling be on this blog?
Would it be like it is now with many dreading the upcoming season?
Or would it be one of cautious optimism but light disappointment that we had only signed Remy so far.
I have a feeling that the team isn’t to weak in terms of ability and that it is Akan that is the cause of a lot of the unrest, nerves and trepidation for the upcoming season.

I really don’t think people appreciate how tough it will be for us to get into the CL. Man Utd, Chelski and Citeh have absolutely mega amounts of money compared to us so they need to seriously screw up to finish below us (as Chelsea did 2 seasons ago) and the other 3 clubs are seriously wealthy and very very well established in the top positions. Just consider this for the top 6:
Man Utd – champions 7 times since 2000 (lowest position 3rd)
Man City – top 5 for the last 4 years (inc. champions once), top 6 for the last 6 years and seriously wealthy
Chelsea – champions 3 times since 2000 (lowest position 6th)
Arsenal – champions 2 times since 2000 (lowest position 4th)
Liverpool – top 8 since 2000 (actually since 1962!)
Spurs – 10 out of 13 top 10 finishes since 2000, top 5 for last 4 seasons
When you consider that, you can see the difficulty that we have to get into the top 6. Those clubs are so well established in those top places and have only had the odd blip. It’s going to take some time…

Unrest, nerves and trepidation? From the fans you mean?
There’s absolutely bugger all evidence that even a single player wants out because of Pardew. In fact, all evidence points towards him being a fantastic man manager and several players have spoken out in support off him.
If he was that crap and we had no chance of top 8, then don’t you think the likes of Cisse, Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Krul, MYM, Debuchy, Tiote etc. would have kicked up a real fuss???
All the damn fans on here deciding that they know what’s really going on at the club (we’re doomed!) while those who are really in the know are just preparing to get on with their job and aim for a great season for our club.

Comment #108@Kets – I really can’t see why you’d want Mcmanaman – Decent performances from an unknown player in high profile, TV games tends to build hype.
I see him as another James Mclean. 1 dimensional and based on pace rather than technique.
I’m sure he’ll turn out better than Mclean but don’t think he’d be worth signing.

Great post. Pardew haters on here might win more support if they offered praise where its due. If pardew can get through last season without any players going to the press or on twitter to slate him, even those out of favour, then it is clear his man management is excellent. He clearly has the support of the group. Even barton, while slating the chairman and ceo, had praise for pardew.

Comment #114Some on here give praise when praise is deserved, some give no praise even when deserved and then there are the others who give praise for some strange reason when it is not at all deserved.
Every fans from every team will slate players, managers its a given right. We pay good money and are entitled to voice an opinion. If one’s point differs to another does this make them wrong? Of course not.
Currently the so called neggers have good points, Lack of ambition, poor tactics and the facts are all there to see the positives however are not.

Comment #115It’s quite fitting that the club wouldn’t have helped with this transition, given how they tend to run things, perhaps someone on here can help?
What colour player would feature on a “B-List”? Before anyone jumps to conclusions, I am talking the Llambias player colour spectrum….not the player himself…phew.
I assume “A-List” is purple, but after that I am lost. Any help? Anyone have a Kinnear to Llambias dictionary?

I bet these pardew bashers will be celebrating the moment that the opposition score a goal.
they don’t know enough about the real world of football instead they use the gaming world as their main football knowledge. when on a computer they control everything from the tactics formation and subs to movment passes and tackles of the players themselves.
so if a match is not good then they simply blame themselves for loosing it as they controlled the players.
