Newcastle Need A Shot Of Real Ambition

9:53 am, Friday, August 16th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 61 Comments

The signing of Loic Remy a week last Monday was a real shot in the arm for the Newcastle fans, but unfortunately we haven’t been able to follow that up with the signing of Bafe Gomis or Darren Bent, and it now looks like Bent will go to Fulham on a season-long loan deal.

Loic Remy – a great signing but the only one

And it seems Newcastle players last week were buoyed by the arrival of the 26 year-old top French International striker, who seems to be quite a character, and Tim Krul has talked to the local press about the only senior signing so far this summer:

“Loic Remy’s given everybody a boost – that’s what everybody has been waiting for,” “They’re the kind of players we like to sign.”

“Newcastle is such a big club, and those are the kind of players that are going to make us better. “We’re definitely delighted with that.”

“Everybody looks fit and sharp.” “Pre-season’s not all about the results – it’s about fitness and confidence.” “It’s nice to get the chance to play behind the boys again and have that feeling.”

“Three and a half months is a long time out, and I’m looking forward to the first game.” “It’s going to be a season where we have to take it game by game.” “I think we belong in the top 10 – 100%.”

“Like the gaffer Alan Pardew said before, we’ll look where we are in January and February.” “Hopefully, we’ll do what we did two seasons ago.”

Newcastle’s goal to finish in the top 10 is hardly earth shattering, after we finished 5th a short 15 months ago, but we suppose that’s a conservative goal – we hope that’s a conservative goal. :(

And Newcastle could be a lot more ambitious and think more about how we can become a top four team in the Premier League, rather than bickering over transfer fees of our top transfer targets every summer.

We had the excruciating non-transfer of Mathieu Debuchy last summer, and the same thing seems to be happening with Bafetimbi Gomis of Lyon this summer – why is it always so hard for Newcastle to sign their top targets?

Stewart Downing West Ham -2160362

Stewart Downing – signed for West Ham yesterday

That doesn’t seem to be the case with other Premier League clubs, and West Ham just signed Stewart Downing yesterday – with lightning speed..

There are bigger things possible for Newcastle in football,  than just getting good deals on players in the transfer market – and Mike Ashley and company would do well to get an injection of real ambition for the famous Tyneside club.

Are there any of those types of injections on the market yet?

What is real ambition should be?

  • 2 alex84 // Aug 16, 2013 at 9:55 AM

I am going to go for a 1-2 win to the Toon on Monday!
    Cisse brace.

    Can’t wait, bring it on!!!!

  • 3 Scottiedog // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:03 AM

    re-post –
West Ham are trying to get rid of Modibo Maiga!!! Worth a shot!?!?!?!?

  • 4 G.unit // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:03 AM

Alex84 – Looks like you’ve had a shot of optimism today. Ha. However, I hope your right.

Bit off subject, but see that Laudrup has come out and said even a ‘ridiculous’ bid for Michu wouldn’t be enough to prize him away from the Liberty Stadium but on the other hand you have Pardew, who all but is inviting teams to sumbit bids for our players. Crazy, I tell ya!! I really do think that Ashley is waiting to sell Cabaye for a canny fee before any funds are made available for transfers. I hope I’m wrong but it sure looks that way.

  • 5 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:04 AM

    Modibo Maiga? Really!

  • 6 alex84 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:07 AM

G-unit, Yeah screw it, I am annoyed we haven’t actually bought anyone, but when Remy is fit, can’t wait to see him play for the Toon. It’s the start of a brand new season, with new hope and I actually think our squad is strong, with a fit 1st 11 we are a match for anyone I believe. I am sick of reading such negative dross, thought id offer a bit of positivity.

  • 7 Belfast // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:08 AM

No chance. We don’t do ambition. Last summer proved that to everybody.

  • 8 Phil K // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:08 AM

    F*****G AMBITION ???????????????????????
Pardew ? A manager no-one in the top 2 divisions would touch with a bargepole ? And effing Kinnear, no-one in the top FOUR divisions would touch with TWO bargepoles ?

  • 9 Santon03 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:09 AM

One thing for sure if Tiote plays, he should be playing ball-winning role, not Pirlo’s role. He doesn’t have the skill to play like Pirlo and he often lost the ball in dangerous area.

  • 10 Phil K // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:10 AM

    >>West Ham are trying to get rid of Modibo Maiga!!! <<

To say he hasn't done anything for WHU is a MASSIVE understatement. He's not a Prem player.

  • 11 toon kk // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:12 AM

We’ll be thrashed on Monday night by a far fitter superior team. Pardew saying we’re fit is a joke, I didn’t see a fit squad in pre season. Also not strengthening is only down to penny pinching, another joke.

  • 12 croftus5678 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:13 AM

unless we sign a winger then guti/sammy are our only options as goofy is not winger and def a cf.

the only way we will beat city imo is by outscoring them and to do that we will need goofy alongside cisse and (i really dont feel well) but shola (sigh) may even be some use to us against there back four for the last 30mins. god i wish i didnt have to say that

  • 13 Santon03 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:16 AM

    croftus

or maybe just do what chelsea did to barca = ultra defensive and counter attack.

  • 14 croftus5678 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:16 AM

    i have a great idea guys !!!!

I really hope that the club prove everyone negative on this blog wrong. Dont get me wrong, it’s not so I can point and laugh or anything, I just really hope we sign a few players, play some canny football and after 38 games land at the top part of the table where we belong.

    Up the toon!

“Everybody looks fit and sharp.” “Pre-season’s not all about the results – it’s about fitness and confidence.”

Not sure what team he’s been looking at but it aint ours xD

  • 17 wynsleap // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:20 AM

Has anyone seen the Sun wrap round today for the start of the new season?
The front page shows a race (obviously for the title) with a player running forwards in a line of players. Van Persie for Manure first followed by Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal etc.
The palyers get smaller as they go backwards and we are shown (Cabaye) as a tiny player fifth form the back. Only the Mackems are below us followed by the three promoted teams.
This is what we have been reduced to under Ashley.
    Disregarded and inconsequential.
    Bloody sad isn’t it?

  • 18 Quasimodo's tailor // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:20 AM

    @Croftus.
“The only way we’ll beat City is by outscoring them”. Oh, really?

  • 19 runheed // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:21 AM

Attack, attack, attack…. That’s necastle. Anything else is sh*t

  • 20 croftus5678 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:21 AM

    @13 santon

aye was thinking that myself tbh ….then i remembered we are not great at defending lol

    mbiwa/collo cb’s
    deb’s/santon attacking wb/wingers
    tiote/guti dm’s
cabaye am with options to help out the back when needed.

  • 21 Laurent Robert 32 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:22 AM

We’ve just missed out on relegation, got less players than last year, and everything will be rosey in the garden will it?

It should be with the standard of first team which we possess, but with Pardew making it look exceptionally harder than it is to simply coach us how to play as a fluid, positive unit, without relying on moments of magic by our talented players to nick a goal, then I’m far from optimistic.

I’ve never felt so underwhelmed and frustrated at a manager, owner or situation at the club than I do now.

Football should be about trying to win, trying to have your team overcome the other through positive play and smooth interlinking of passes and good movement off the ball to create space.

Watching us camp round the edge of our own box whilst Cisse plays piggy in the middle up front by himself chasing down the ball, is an awful way to go about winning a match.

Then for Mr. Propaganda himself, Alan Silver Tongue Pardew, to state we play on the front foot and always go out to win is flat out lies.

“We need goals.” So the next game against Liverpool he leaves out Gouffran and Ben Arfa and we get thrashed. Tell us Alan, how do we score goals when you don’t set us up to create chances? Major fail.

If you think he’ll magically start coaching us good football, you’re in dreamworld. He had all year to do it and failed at it. He continues doing what he knows because it’s above is level to manage these technical players to do what they’re good at.

  • 22 numba9 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:23 AM

West ham can sign players and they were in a right old financial mess 18 month ago . Only thing stopping us signing players is the tight UNambitious owner that would rather employ jobs for the boys tactics to squander so called tight money on .. joke

  • 23 Spotlight Kid // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:23 AM

Ashley is here until he recoups the money he (stupidly) overpaid for the club. Until then, the club (wrongly and dubiously) is saddled with his overpayment in the form of a a £100m debt to him. It’s ludicrous and ultimately debilitating.

If Pardew and Kinnear perform to their usual standards we will be relegated and the Prem golden goose TV moneys (which Ashley is currently back-pocketing) will vanish. The best players will be sold off and Ashley will try to cut his losses.

If P&K keep the team in the Prem then it will be more of the same next season until Ashley’s personal mistake is paid back to him by the club and he can sell at a nominal profit.

There is no room for ambition until a new owner is in place with new management. Ashley, in simple terms, is a parasite.

  • 24 SeanNufc87 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:24 AM

    Santon

If celtic can do it then surely we can? I know everyone is wanting attractive attacking football but teams like city and the other top 6, sometimes you just have to try and grind out a result.

I think if pardew does this however and we lose, everyone on here will spit their dummies out blaming him for everything as per.

  • 25 wolfshead@toon // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:24 AM

tiote and pirlo do have one thing in common they both play in black white stripes other than that pirlo is in a different league/world/universe haha

  • 26 paul24 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:24 AM

    @wynsleap

The guys at the Sun must be smoking something if they think Man Poo are gonna win the league this year.

  • 27 Sir Braveheart // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:24 AM

Hopefully Ashley realises that he can’t rely on Kinnear, or any director of football, to get deals over the line. He’s much better being hands on and getting the job done himself when it comes to transfers – look at January, quick business, good players, good prices.

Ashley is a businessman, and a very good one, there’s no one better for negotiating transfers. By all means if he must have someone in place to identify targets and price ranges then so be it, but when it comes to the negotiations Ashley has to get his hands dirty because the reality is he’s damm good at closing the deal.

  • 28 Santon03 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:26 AM

    croftus

put more defensive players, we are bad at defending because we have more attacking minded players doing defensive duty.
    Let’s say we do:

    Anita———Tiote————Cabaye———–Gouffran
    —————————HBA———————————–
    ——————————-Cisse—————————–

    ——————————-Cisse—————————–

  • 30 croftus5678 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:27 AM

    @18 quasi

yes m8 and its true i have evidence !

look at any result last year and you will notice every team that won outscored the other team ^^

another fact is that if you dont concede any goals you will not lose the game but personally i’m a bit sceptical on that one :-)

  • 31 Santon03 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:28 AM

I forgot Sissoko, replace Haidara with Sissoko then

  • 32 geordiemark // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:29 AM

we need a new owner then because this owner has never ever had any ambition at all

  • 33 croftus5678 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:29 AM

    @28/29 santon

no gk lol and an extra outfield player :-) love it but i dont see it helping us keep a clean sheet.

  • 34 Rooster // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:31 AM

It would be madness for Gomis to sign an extended deal with Lyon, unless he truly loves the club?!?!, they are in the champs league of course, but miss out on a potential 3 million sign on fee and wages 30k less than he would get here and the fact the French government have slapped 75% tax on high earners, still madness if he resigns, I think we are still in with a squeak, but this is all driving us to madness ha ha!

  • 35 geordiemark // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:31 AM

    my top 4 is

    chelsea
    man city
    arsenal
    man united

  • 36 Santon03 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:31 AM

    wolfshead

They both defensive midfields, but Pirlo is also playmaker

  • 37 croftus5678 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:32 AM

    @35 geordie

i’d agree with that with liverpool just behind manure

  • 38 mattyNUFC // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:32 AM

i wonder why a lot of you support NUFC. the fans deriding other fans for being less than optimistic about the season ahead and future of the club is absurd.

All of us want a top 7 finish minimum, but Pardew has already voiced to high heaven that the Europa League is such a burden, an unncessary distraction, but that we’re so far off the top 4 or 5 clubs we simply can’t compete with them. So, our only real aim then is to finish either 8th, 9th, or 10th place. what is the use? Sure we’ve an owner with little to no ambition, we all know that. There’s nothing we can do. But to look forward to the season ahead knowing we have a man at the helm who is not only incapable but inept and deluded with regards to working within those confines is overwhelmingly disheartening

  • 39 Santon03 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:32 AM

    croftus

Lol sorry, you are right. then take off HBA

  • 40 Quasimodo's tailor // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:35 AM

Aye Croftus. I also reckon if we go one goal up, the chances are we’ll win providing the other team doesn’t score.

  • 41 wynsleap // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:35 AM

Spotlight Kid @ 23 – we keep on paying back Ashley each season as he makes no investment outlay on players. This season the huge amount of TV money, sponsorship and merchandising seems to be going back to him as he’s spent nowt so far. Problem is the debt never seems to go down. Go figure.
(For those who argue it will be shown in the accounts, ever heard of creative accountancy?)
    Paul24 @26
Much as I hate them would you really back against them?

  • 42 geordiemark // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:35 AM

    croftus5678

think liverpool might even pip them to 4th really, think spurs and everton will give man u a good run for the money as well so really man u could finish nearer 7th now wouldnt that be nice haha

  • 43 numba9 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:37 AM

Doesn’t want to finish in Europa positions because that will mean having to sign a couple of extra players to cope which we never did last year sooo tight he is unreal

  • 44 jamesnufc86 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:39 AM

Looks like old Jose Enrique was right after all. Swansea won’t let Mitchu go for anything but Cabaye is sold to the highest bidder ha ha it’s actually making me laugh now. This club is an utter shambles

  • 45 Santon03 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:40 AM

    Sean #24

I don’t think anyone will blame pardew if we lose against City. If we got thrased 6 or 8-0 then yes.
but trying to grind out results against soton, Reading, Wigan, WBA, it’s silly especially playing at home.

  • 46 geordiemark // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:40 AM

its a disgrace when a manger doesnt want to finish off in a eurpean place every footballers dream is to win there respective leagues then you get a nonse like pardew going for top 10

  • 47 geordiemark // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:43 AM

    santon

if they get beat 6-8-0 at man city then all them better not come back and get on a plane out the country to far away places bloody quick :)

  • 48 croftus5678 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:43 AM

    @42 geordie

too much to hope manure get relegated i suppose ?

    @quasi

now thats just silly saying city wont score against us :-)
theres more hope of tiote scoring a goal

  • 49 Rooster // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:43 AM

geordiemark, if we finish 10th, Pardew will have a lovely smile on his sly face, cos he know no Europa league and he is still in a job, and that’s all that matters to him, I really believe that, its awful.

  • 50 mattyNUFC // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:44 AM

sorry, was in the middle of something so the last one came out a bit spastic…

basically the Europa league is a reward for the prior season’s acheivments. Only ourselves and Stoke have used it as an excuse for wildly underperforming. If Pardew doesnt want that burden and honestly doesn’t believe we’re good enough to reproduce a top 5 finish or beyond, then he is simply holding out for 3 places, 8th 9th or 10th. Not even his ever-balooning ego will allow him to hope above those places.

I think I need to detox from this lunacy. How there are still people defending this regime and the tactical staunchness of the management is now fully beyond my comprehension.

  • 51 Santon03 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:45 AM

    geordie

with our current squad shouldn’t be that bad, I can accept 3-0 defeat.
but if it does happen, then pardew will probably be the first manager to get sacked.

  • 52 geordiemark // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:48 AM

I remember when man u got relegated in 1974 crofters but divint think they will this season haha

  • 53 mattyNUFC // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:49 AM

rooster, i disagree to an extent

all the folks who say ‘pards will never get a better job’ yadda yadda, sure, he probably is aware of that. but the most damning bit in all of this is that HE honestly believes he’s good enough. that’s what’s hurting us on the field and in training, his absolute stubborness because he thinks he knows best.

  • 54 Santon03 // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:49 AM

if we do get thrased 6-0 or 8-0 then last 6 games we played we conceded like about 20 goals :(

  • 55 geordiemark // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:50 AM

if ashley has no ambition why doesnt he float the club on the stock exchange

  • 56 geordiemark // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:52 AM

santon liverpool stuck 6 past us at home now man city is far better team then them lot as you know 6-8 goals arent out of the question here and if it happens then god help pardew and co

  • 57 Rooster // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:55 AM

Yea Matty, that is the worry, AP does think he is ver good an he is not by a long way, the fact that IMO his players do not take any notice of him once they are over thewhite line, and the fact he wont change tactically and we have been sust by other clubs long ago, even the Mackems sust us, and Liverpool slaughtered us, exploited our weakness and that to an extent is AP`s tactical unawerness.

  • 58 curmon // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:56 AM

There is a lot of negativity flying around about the state of the club and particularly it’s inept management. Well, you ain’t seen nothing yet, wait until Tuesday morning and it will be ten times worse than it is now. We will play the same old failures, Shola, Guti , Tiote and get absoloutely hammered by City. Nothing has changed from last season, infact the addition of JFK has made it worse, and Pardwho has not learnt a thing.

  • 59 investinyouthtoon // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:57 AM

    #44.

I know how bad when Jose knew the writing was on the wall some years ago, and nothing much has changed since.

on the subject of Monday, I think Pardrew’s mindset is for a draw, and a draw is something we could only ever dream of, under this shame of a regime.

  • 60 toon kk // Aug 16, 2013 at 10:57 AM

What worries me most about this coming season is where the goals will come from if Remy gets injured. Yes we have Cisse but he relies on scraps. I wish I could be more optimistic but after last season’s diabolical performances and then our pre season lacklustre set up. We could be in for a rough ride.

  • 61 Chrism // Aug 16, 2013 at 2:30 PM

So we sign no one everyone here has written us off before a ball has been kicked, we are already relegated- ok I guess all thats left is sleep for a year and hopefully we will wake up still in the premier league. I may be old fashioned, I am certainly old, but I dont see how this is support.
