Can Newcastle Get A Result At City – Only Remy Not Available

11:15 am, Sunday, August 18th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 27 Comments

There were some surprises yesterday in the first day of the new Premier League season, with the biggest shock being Aston Villa’s 3-1 win at the Emirates Stadium, against an inept looking Arsenal side, where once again their defense looked suspect.

alan padrew and john carver

John Carver and Alan Pardew in pre-season

Villa looked good and they are a young side who will benefit from clung into their Premier League status and they finished one place above Newcastle and on the same points total of 41 – 5 points better off than relegated Wigan.

And Sunderland were beaten at home 1-0 by Fulham, so it was n;t a good start for manager Paolo Di Canio.

Manuel Pellegrini is the new manager at Manchester City, and this will be his first game in charge, and Newcastle manager Alan Pardew seems happy enough with his club, and thinks we are well prepared for thew game:

“I think we’re in good shape and for us, with the game being on Monday night, it’s a psychological game for us in terms of putting ourselves in the mind of everybody with a really strong performance – and hopefully get some points out of what is obviously a tough game.”

“They’ve again invested heavily, Manchester City. They’re obviously going to be one of the contenders for the title so it’s a tough game for us but we’re more than ready for it.”

“The ideal scenario is to get a result of any kind and I think we’ve got the players to do it. We carry some fabulous players – Yohan Cabaye, Fabricio Coloccini, Papiss Cisse – so we’ve got an opportunity and hopefully we can take it.”

“I think Pellegrini’s style is not too different to Mancini’s but I think there is an emphasis that they’re going to be a little bit more forward-thinking, put a little bit more pressure on us maybe when we’ve got the ball, so it’ll be interesting to see how honed that is in the first game,”

“But if they’re going to play a high press against us then we need to take care of the ball.” “There’s always that special feeling when the Premier League is kicking off.”

“It’s the best division of football in the world, in my opinion, so to be part of it and have a strong team like we’ve got is very exciting.”

“The only injury that’s really affecting us for Monday night is Loic Remy who we brought into the club with a calf injury, but he’s getting some work that should get him back on the training ground next week.”

“Hopefully. Other than we’re at a good level of preparation in terms of our first game.”

No mention there if Davide Santon not being fit, so it’s interesting how that news got out – if it’s not true, and it was reported in the local papers yesterday.

But make no mistake it’s a huge opportunity for Newcastle to get the season off to a great start by getting something out of this game tomorrow night – that has to be the goal – and it looks like Remy is the only player not available – so that’s good news.

And a note to our American readers – every single game of the Premier League will broadcast live by the NBC Sports Network, and here’s where you can can watch the games – and the Newcastle game tomorrow night is broadcast live on the NBC Sports channel. They also have apps for the iPhone and Android based smartphones and tablets.

Fox Soccer has no games in the Premier League this season, but will be broadcasting the Championship League games live – with Warren Barton as the chief analyst again this season.

    Can you remember this:

    Ketsbaia9 // Aug 14, 2013 at 6:36 PM
Swansea will easily beat Man Utd on sat, infact I’m putting £250 on it.

    Any more predictions?

  • 3 hadthetshirt // Aug 18, 2013 at 11:22 AM

I for one am not expecting any points.I just hope we battle hard and don’t get battered.5-0.A point would be great.I am more concerned about our 2 home games and hope for more than 3 points from those two.Anything less will be worrying.

  • 4 sparky55 // Aug 18, 2013 at 11:23 AM

my prediction…we’ll be bottom of the premiership on goal difference come monday night.

Then that tw@t Allardyce will beat us again the following week, then Bent will play against us the following home game and score 2

and after 5 games we’ll have 2 points

and because pardew hasn’t got a clue, we’ll struggle all year.

I love the toon but I see nothing but misery this year…we’re just too disjointed and no-one is being encouraged to play to their strengths except HBA and sissoko…the rest a too defensive on Pardews orders

  • 5 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 18, 2013 at 11:26 AM

Yep, we won’t score against Man City. We have nothing in attack. He’ll play Cabaye and we’ll lack creativity. Marveaux will come on and create chances but it’ll be too late. Anita will be on the bench as Pardew isn’t right in the head.

Don’t understand Shearer. We need at least 4 new players.

  • 6 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 18, 2013 at 11:27 AM

Willian, Gomis and Alderweireld for £27m and that’ll be enough to take us to the next level.

  • 7 joeinthecheapseats // Aug 18, 2013 at 11:28 AM

Ooh all gloom West Ham will be hard to beat but still fancy 4/6 points from the first 3 games
Bent won’t be match fit and they will have the laziest strike force in the premiership
Still think early next week we will get a forward deal done
Last week it wasn’t going to happen because of the international matches

  • 8 Jamesthefirst // Aug 18, 2013 at 11:28 AM

“Only Remy not available” we all know what he means by that “I AM PICKING JONAS AHEAD OF ANYONE ELSE IN FORM”

  • 9 Ashton // Aug 18, 2013 at 11:29 AM

    Slank

I feel embarrassed knowing that there are absolute imbeciles like him supporting my beloved football club.

  • 10 Slank // Aug 18, 2013 at 11:29 AM

    Ketsbaia9 @ 5

In following your previous prediction about ManU, sounds like we will win at Man City.

  • 11 Diggedydaws // Aug 18, 2013 at 11:32 AM

    @ Sparky,

Why bother following the toon? You’re clearly not supportive of them, glass permanently half empty or what!

  • 12 Norlinsen // Aug 18, 2013 at 11:32 AM

Has anyone else seen Callum Mcmanaman’s new tackle? He never learns. I really can’t stand that player,

  • 13 joeinthecheapseats // Aug 18, 2013 at 11:32 AM

This is a decent squad just needs a bit of tinkering with and a couple more p layers in
Fitness coach will make a difference as for Anita saw him get out muscled against Diame from West ham and the west brom central midfielder
Neat player but not as good as some make him out to be

  • 14 Slank // Aug 18, 2013 at 11:32 AM

    Ashton,

    Me too.

Why do his parents let him on their computer?

  • 15 Diggedydaws // Aug 18, 2013 at 11:36 AM

Why has it gone cold on sinclair?

Obertan oot, him in. A.N.Other CF and we’re on easy street man!

yo-yo @45 previous post – sorry so belated but well said Sir! I too find the childish insults and lack of tolerance for varied views very depressing and off-putting. I’m unhappy with our lack of signings, not a huge Pardew fan – but he did get us to 5th and Europa which makes him better than a few others (Graham Shoemess anyone?). Last season was poor to say the least – but we did reach a European quarter-final and did have a squeak of getting past Benfica, although they were the better team over 2 legs. I also fail to see the point of Kinnear unless he’s better at getting players in than Lambias – no evidence of that yet.
But constantly shouting “Ashley out” and “Pardew out” on this blog isn’t going to achieve anything. People are entitled to their opinions but constant repetition of the same stuff does get monotonous.

  • 17 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Aug 18, 2013 at 11:36 AM

We are going to fnish between 5th from the top and 5th from the bottom!

…it can go either way like we have seen the last two seasons; it is not because we played good football any of those seasons, there is just alot of variables.

If we don’t sign a prolific forward before then transfer window closes I would say wr are in for yet another gamble like last season and we all know how that ended :-(

  • 18 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 18, 2013 at 11:39 AM

Haha, I hope I’m wrong. We’d have a much better squad than Liverpool, Man Utd and Arsenal if we signed the above 3 players. Hopefully Kinnear was watching Alderweireld against france.

    Sparky,

‘…we’re just too disjointed… no-one play to their strengths except HBA and sissoko..’

Like how? Give us some examples.

Are the defenders playing in midfield or/and attack?
Does Krul come up to join the attack when we have a corner?
Is Cisse always back in defence?
Does Tiote not challenge for the ball?
Does Cabaye not pass the ball?

    Please explain.

  • 20 sparky55 // Aug 18, 2013 at 11:53 AM

diggety…you know as well as I do that once you’re bitten with the toon bug there’s no escape.

As sad as it is my whole mood is effected by the toon’s performances and results and last year I was in a bad mood for 9 months straight because although we managed to stay up our performances were consistently dreadful

preseason has done nothing to lift my optimism, the 4-4-2 shape that took us the dizzy heights of 16th are still there, and our main man cabaye spends all his time looking up in the air for the ball.

we don’t build from the back, we have no real width and we’re not generating the type of supply that Cisse thrives on to score goals.

So yes i might be glass half empty but also very realistic and pragmatic about what’s about to dished up by pardew which unfortunately is more of the same

  • 21 Greebol1892 // Aug 18, 2013 at 11:58 AM

bah…. tired of people whingeing about Jonas. If he’s fit, he’s one of the 1st names on the team sheet. As much as I also disagree with it, I have to accept it because Pardew WILL NOT CHANGE.

We have no chance of getting anything from the game because Pardew’s tactics are tailor-made for a Man City rout.
Their attacking, mobile midfield always destroys our static, defensive setup – regardless of which players he puts out.
So this fixture joins Manure away and Liverpool away as perennial defeats.

    HTL!

  • 22 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 18, 2013 at 12:01 PM

I reckon if we signed Willian for £15m, he’d turn into a £40m player within a year. Ashley may put a bid in for him. He would be a great addition to the squad. Gutierrez needs to drop a stone and get his pace back. If JK watched the Belgium match, I’m sure he would’ve watched Alderweireld.

  • 23 alext109 // Aug 18, 2013 at 12:11 PM

Why do we constantly get players who are injured and then they don’t play for at least a couple of months.
    Remy, marveux, ben arfa, gosling.
We have a hard enough time getting players settled as it is with Pardews tactics of them not being ready for PL football so they are either on the bench or no where in sight!

  • 24 magicbus // Aug 18, 2013 at 1:08 PM

We wont get anything at City. We may draw the next 2 matches. You would think Ashley would have learned from last summer but no. He wants players for pennies and sod any extra strikers. We are in for another rough season just like the last one.

  • 25 OhSholaAmeobi // Aug 18, 2013 at 1:29 PM

The average fan with at least an ounce of intellect:
    Krul
    Debuchy Coloccini Mbiwa Santon
    Tiote Sissoko
    Ben Arfa Cabaye Gouffran
    Cisse

    Pardew:

    Krul
    Debuchy S.Taylor Coloccini Santon Jonas
    Obertan Sissoko Tiote Cabaye
    Cisse

    @ Sparky

Have to agree with you about the shape of the team, it does my head in when it’s so obs that AP can’t work out what is his best 442 and how to get them to play.

He’s scared to drop ‘purples’ and is blind to how much more effective the 433 seems to be for us.

But negativity is gonna make it another excruciating season for u bud!
