Continued Cabaye Disruption Could Cost Newcastle Today

10:11 am, Saturday, August 24th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 171 Comments

Moussa Sissoko can play as a box-to-box midfielder, so that if Yohan Cabaye again refuses to play for Newcastle this afternoon (that will not be good), then Moussa will get a chance to show what he can do in that position.

Motherwell v Newcastle United - Pre Season Friendly

Moussa Sissoko – could get box-to-box role today if Cabaye is absent

That’s player power to the extreme and cannot be good for the game.

But it’s hardly been a good start to the season for Newsletter when arguably our best player seems to want to leave the club and will not even play for Newcastle – who are paying him good wages on Tyneside.

And Alan Pardew commented on that in his press conference for the game, when the Londoner said he aged two years last week – with everything that was going on at the club, and if there’s still some turmoil caused by the Yoan Cabaye affair – it could cost us points today against West Ham.

Hopefully, at some point we will get to know exactly what has been going on with Yohan Cabaye and what really happened that he didn’t make the squad last Monday night.

This is what Moussa had to say in the Evening Chronicle today:

“Maybe the manager will say one of us won’t play.” “We have a big group here and some big players, so we need to work hard.” “Others may also come in like Loic Remy.”

“But there’s still so much to play for.” “We can aim for top 10 but maybe we can finish higher than that if we continue to work hard.” “My style of play has been to win the ball.” “It is much more physical in the Premier League.”

“I like the English league because we play box-to-box which is better for my quality. I run fast and progress quickly.” “The manager likes my profile because I can play box to box.”

“If it is possible I will have a good season and maybe get called up for France.” “Here this is a hard league – in France sometimes the teams keep the ball for long periods.” “Here everyone wants the ball back.”

“I hope for more goals. I want to score eight to 10 goals this year.” “The important thing is that we play well as a team. If I score it’s better for me, but the team is the most important.”

Today at 2:00 pm will be an important time for Newcastle fans, because that’s about the time the team will be announced, and we’ve got to admit if Cabaye is not in the squad for the second game running, we are not going to be happy, and that’s an understatement – a big one.

We hope he plays today.

But fans must also keep right behind the players on the pitch today, and it also helps to support the manager right now, even if you don’t rate Alan Pardew – he’s doing his best in what is a very difficult situation for the manager.

Comments welcome, but please keep them civil.

    No Tiote, Taylor or Jonas????

I feel like our team is infinitely stronger now.

    Debuchy Mbiwa Coloccini Santon
    Anita Sissoko
    Ben Arfa Marveaux Gouffran

cabaye deserves better than pardew as manager and colocinni as captain

RE:Loic remy .I think its worth pointing out the shamelessness of fans who are happy to condemn the likes of nile ranger and joey barton but have no problem with us signing an alleged rapist who turned us down to make more money at qpr earlier this year

Personally I don’t think we can wait until jan for a top CF, nor, for £10 mil, do I think gomis is a top CF and don’t think he’ll be a success in the PL
Personally would of walked away from this deal weeks ago and maybe put in a £3-4 mil bid jan just to add another option

We still imo need a CB, badly, have said that all summer and all last season, Taylor is simply not good enough!
We still need to replace Simmo because we need a back up plan if debuchy carries on with his current form which is frankly shocking
We still need a natural LW, Marv doesn’t want to play there, remy isn’t really a winger, jonas shouldn’t play there, and goofy is a CF!
We also desperately need a CAM! If we have to sell cabaye to make that happen then ok he’s not creative enough for us but a De Jong/Cabella/Grenier type player is essential

  • 7 toonbrother // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:20 AM

    My team for today (5-2-3)

    ….The Bushy…Mbiwa..Williamson….Anita

  • 8 MrToon // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:20 AM

If i refuse to do my job, I don’t get paid! Cabay should be no different.

  • 9 Belfast-Toon // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:21 AM

I’m with ya toon brother should have let him rot in championship getting hacked every week… Plenty of strikers we could have loaned, Moses, gudetti, Ba to name a few.

As for cabaye if ya don’t wna play man up and tell the fans who have adored u… Hopefully now Anita and marv get a chance with moussa in a 3 man middle and go for the win today.

  • 10 Transfer Sage // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:22 AM

    From previous.

Yeh I agree it’s wrong that agents are the deciding factor but I wonder how true that is. You never see other clubs having this issue and for free signings you never hear other clubs say “he wasn’t free, there were agent fees” like we did with Ba.

I think this is more a case of both is and Lyon being tight and arguing over who pays the fee as oppose to the agent wanting too much above the going rate.

It will be hard to say what really happens in these deals as we don’t know, I’m just speculating. I know some agents are crooks though, remember one who had offers for his player from west ham and Liverpool but be took a 700k bung off west ham to make sure the player only knew their deal (or was told the Liverpool deal was low money etc)

Just knowing our transfer business then I blame us as we haggle beyond the reasonable point a lot of time.

  • 11 toonaids // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:23 AM

has anyone heard anything about the remy situation, alot of people at my work have said he is going to plead guilty to gan grape today?!?!? dont know how much truth is in it like but if thats the case they must have a wad load of evidence against him.

  • 12 Transfer Sage // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:24 AM

Ranger and Barton had both being convicted of assault so therefor LE guilty, ranger has been accused (not sure if charged). With rape.

Remy has been accused but not charged yet, personally I wouldn’t have approached him until the decision to charge or not was made but in fairness he is innocent until proven guilty

  • 13 toonarmydownsouth // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:25 AM

Moses is a winger, gudietti hasn’t played for over a season
Great list, fcuk remy who needs a proven goal scorer eh

It’s not spot on, ranger has been charged, officially with rape, Barton was charged and served time for assualt and afray
Remy hasn’t been charged with anything and its mob mentality like that that would have people convicted before found guilty ffs

  • 14 Black and White with an army lol // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:25 AM

Sissoko is a beast and easily could be our best player, the team should be built around him not Cabaye

  • 15 reccerobbo // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:26 AM

What if cabaye was injured would we be using that as an excuse for getting beat?? I can see the headlines all ready we got beat as we was missing our beat player as his head is at arsenal pardew get a grip you useless cockney c£@t

  • 16 Transfer Sage // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:26 AM

    Cabaye should be playing.

And the end of the day he is paid to play football, if you have a job interview somewhere you don’t not turn up for work for a couple weeks until its sorted one way or another or you are out of a job.

He should want to show arsenal and PSG just how good he is by playing against city and west ham.

My only thought is maybe Ashley is holding him back so an injury doesn’t cost him 20mil.

  • 17 toonarmydownsouth // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:27 AM

Once again plead guilty where? He hasn’t been charged, it’s not at trail and I doubt he’d be asking advice of random people if he should randomly turn up and hand himself in

  • 18 Belfast-Toon // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:29 AM

Moses can play striker… Imo he could score as much as remy, Ba would clearly score more…

Remy is the same player who knocked us back at the last minute, made nufc look like eejits having his medical in London knowing fine rightly what was happening. I never mentioned the rape as like u said he hasn’t been convicted I’m annoyed at how he made us look in jan

  • 19 noir9 // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:30 AM

Plead guilty?? Not even been charged, arrested & bailed.

  • 20 fatman // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:30 AM

big game today we will find out if we can get goals, its a must win game, if we fail to win Pardew has to go before the rot sets in. in all probability we have to go through Pardew, then Kinnear. also we seem to be going back to the Carroll saga vilify the player so the fans turn on the player, and not the manager Who gets a 1% cut of the transfer fee, and for those who say why would Pardew want shot of Cabaye, could be the £200,000 he pockets.

  • 21 The overrated Frenchman // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:31 AM

My impression is that Cabaye hasn’t really had his heart in it at Newcastle for a while now. Part of the problem has been physical, groin injury etc., but he has spoken of depression which is just as debilitating. He seemed to take the captain’s armband with reluctance more than enthusiasm, and that, to be honest, seemed to reflect in his performance. I think he’s at a point where he just doesn’t want to be here – for whatever reasons – so it’s in everybodies interest to let him move on.

  • 22 toonarmydownsouth // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:35 AM

How did he make us look exactly? We flew him to him London, knowing full fcuking well that QPR had a bid accepted for him, and didn’t go to meet him ffs!
We put him firmly in the lap of QPR, no one to blame but dekka for that
Also Ba left for an improved contract, I’d love him back but you can’t complain about remy choosing a club for money then say oh get demba back!

  • 23 Hencha Boii // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:37 AM

    My team would be

    Santon mbiwa colo drummet
    Anita. Sissoko
    Gouffran. Cisse. Sammy

But Pardew will go for the same old formation that alienates cisse up top, sammy will be out for shola who has shown time and time again that he can’t start or perform in premier league games!!

  • 24 Belfast-Toon // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:40 AM

i don’t know what ba’s demands were if he gave any to nufc but he scored goals at a decent rate and he deserved more money and a better contract. Like I said I dunno if we had a chance to improve his contract but we should have and wouldn’t be in this situation

Well see when remy plays but i ain’t expecting a) too many goals and b) a perm deal at end of loan

  • 25 toon kk // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:42 AM

Cabaye or none of the players come to that are as good as they used to be. Whether thats down to Pards, our diabolical training or fitness I’m not sure. Trouble is when MA does spend which is looking unlikely Pards can’t get the best out of them.

  • 26 Transfer Sage // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:43 AM

    I’d go for this today

    Deb, colo, mbiwa, dummets
    Anita, sissoko, Marv
    Hba, cisse, gouff

Got two lads in the middle who can hold but also pass and attack when needed in Anita and sissoko. Then Marv behind the front three to create chances and not need to worry as much tracking back, just pressuring in their half.

Put a fit Santon in to replace Debs & I think you are on the button.

  • 29 fatman // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:57 AM

Pardew cant have his usual plan a because Jonas Gutierrez is injured so in panic he will play Shola, and Cisse on the wing then plan b will be to bring on Sammy.

  • 30 colwell // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:57 AM

Cabaye is one of the better players in a squad ridiculously out of form. Saying that the guy is not worth the 15/20 m being touted about.

Catch 22, Sell him – not interested, injury prone, more money than he’s worth.

Keep him- One of 2 creative players, he won’t be replaced.

If we were guaranteed to spend his money I’d say get rid no question but because of MA i’d say keep.

  • 31 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:58 AM

  • 32 Belfast-Toon // Aug 24, 2013 at 10:59 AM

It seems a lot of us feel r manager is tactically in depth and really hasn’t got a clue… Bearing that in mind if you could change pardew to have big Sam back… Would ya’s do it?

  • 33 colwell // Aug 24, 2013 at 11:00 AM

Todays game between 2 hoof ball teams great football to watch.

West Ham are actually set up to play this tactic though whereas we try with one of the smallest (height) teams in the prem.

  • 37 Transfer Sage // Aug 24, 2013 at 11:02 AM

No i wouldn’t. Because Sam likes his big players and wingers and we don’t have that to suit his play so would need to overhaul the squad, Id go for somebody else.

But if it was only between pardew and big Sam I’d take big sam every time

  • 38 Black and White with an army lol // Aug 24, 2013 at 11:05 AM

lets see how the home attendance will be today

  • 39 Transfer Sage // Aug 24, 2013 at 11:05 AM

Big Sam also sets them up right. As in the gets his wingers and Nolan to be near Carroll for the flick on or knock down. We get cisse miles away from anyone so we struggle to use that out ball.

Also good wingers and balls into the box can be interesting to watch as well as pass and move stuff.

  • 40 colwell // Aug 24, 2013 at 11:05 AM

I was kind of hoping a net would be placed across the pitch about 8ft up, that would fcuk both teams tactics right up lol.

  • 41 Belfast-Toon // Aug 24, 2013 at 11:06 AM

I would only go with big Sam for the same reason that he can get the best out of players… Right so what we reakon… Il have the faith. Cisse with both goals in a 2-1 victory.

  • 49 Wiz // Aug 24, 2013 at 11:13 AM

Victory today will convince nobody, but defeat will surely be fatal for Pardew, who will have conclusively lost the dressing room. He might not be sacked for another few weeks, but defeat today will produce the inevitable result. But I wouldn’t have Allardyce back, who was once asked by one of his players, after half an hour of analysis of the opposition, whether he had any plans for the way Newcastle United should play. Strangely, defeat today would make more likely a less predictable outcome. It might make Ashley’s mind up about pressing ahead with an outright sale of the club.

  • 50 Greebol1892 // Aug 24, 2013 at 11:14 AM

    fatman – spot-on there

It won’t make any difference with Pardew’s defensive tactics. Doesn’t matter who he plays – we are just hoping for some individual brilliance to get us through. Although there have been signs that we are trying to pass the ball, one of our best passers Anita will be restricted to stay in our own half instead of playing to his strengths – PASS & MOVE. AND no service nor support to Cisse. Please just give the ball to Hatem as much possible. That’s our best chance.

    thanks mate…

Yeah I am just worried about Ashley keeping this clown which to me is inevitable… Also quite frankly I would put my hand in the fire to say that we wont sign anybody but as somebody mentioned a third choice keeper…

We havent signed anybody now why would we in the upcoming days. Reasons for this sis simple Ash is tight, or he wants to sell… both of whom are a possibility.

as of late must say I am a bit disappointed at Cisse, he cant seem to keep the ball at all he is bossed by defenders not a good sign needs to beef up like Ameobi possibly. Ba was super in that area had a bit of aggression and weight behind him.

We are in dire dire dire dire dire dire need of CF, LW/RW CB its so obvious. I dont want to see Saylor play anymore he is very weak, has no brain. Colo is getting bossed.

Cabaye not playing today, if Anita doesn’t play in Cab’s absence then surely his career at newcastle is over too.

We won’t score today so all depends if they do.

They will pull us all over the place today with their pace and width…they will be getting in behind our full backs which as we all know is not difficult and if anyone scores you can put your bottom dollar on it being Nolan.

    I would play…

    Debuchy, Colo, M’biwa, dummet

    Anita Sissoko santon

    HBA Cisse Marveaux

Wonder if Gary Neville is right about too many foreigners. Imagine a French side full of Englishmen, how many would be homesick or just plain out on the lash out of sheer inability to embrace the culture. Newcastle isn’t London or Paris, its a provincial northern English city steeped in working class traditions. Surely it stands to reason that a number of these guys may not feel as if they really belong and don’t know how to compete as a committed unit. Starting to wonder if this French experiment isn’t about to unravel in an unforeseen way. Then again, could just be my natural geordie angst over my hapless football team getting the better of me on the eve of a big, big game.

  • 119 Transfer Sage // Aug 24, 2013 at 12:14 PM

I think the long ball comes frome the fact we play really deep in our own half and have no pace/little pace.

We either need an injection of pace with 2/3 lads who can get out and counter quick…or we need to play 20 yards higher up the field and press more so when we win the ball back we are in their half/close to it so we have more options in keeping it short to get quickly near their box.

That link (loads slow) shows that we have the third highest % of total shots from outside box and the lowest % shots inside the 6 yard box. To me that shows poor team play in chance creation and that most of our shots, as outside the box, have only a small chance of resulting in a goal.

  • 126 Transfer Sage // Aug 24, 2013 at 12:23 PM

regardless of who is to blame, newcastle or remy it’s only natural for a player to all offers into consideration.

Although QPR looked like going down they spent a bit to try and stay up, same as we did in jan, we were both bottom half (both looking possible relegation, although QPR looked more likely)….but then there is more to consider.

Money…got more at QPR possibly, also playing time, guaranteed a start at QPR, they have a better manager who works well with attacking players, they also based in london which is a pull for players, he was also told he’d get the central striking role not the left sided role he’d get with us (said that himself in interview).

So although I get why people are angry I think the decision to join QPR over us wasn’t that shocking, especially when he got a release clause to allow him to leave if/when they were relegated.

I didn’t know that. But either way I think it’s irrelevant anyway.

In all honesty one or two beers after a game does no harm at all, they often have the next day off anyway.

As long as they aren’t going out and having a skin full and being out until 4/5am then there is no problem.

  • 129 sparky55 // Aug 24, 2013 at 12:30 PM

You could play Peter Beardsley in this team and there’d still be no overlapping and movement around him, so he too would be looking for Ben Arfa style out of the blue goals, which Pardew has always relied upon.

It’s Pardew’s clueless tactical oppression which is making everyone seem worse than they are.

Yeh I noticed that, didn’t intend to sound critical of you if thats how it came across.

Look at cricket as an example, massive shift in last 10 years on fitness and strengthening….but after a game, when they have 3/4 days before next match they can celebrate with a few beers if they win…they still perform as well as they do without drinking at all.

It’s all about moderation….a couple beers might knock you down maybe 0.5% from your best physically but relaxing and bonding with your team might improve your mental state more than enough to counteract the slight physical impact one or two beers has on you.

  • 134 sparky55 // Aug 24, 2013 at 12:39 PM

everything is down to the manager…he’s incompetent at best.

Allardyce got the sack for trying to make the footballing team he inherited to play the Sam Allardyce way and it just didn’t work

pardew should be sacked for doing the same…he got them playing good football in a 4-3-3 formation which suited the players and got is fifth in the league, and last year tried to make an attacking team play defensive football in a 4-4-2 and nearly got us relegated.

This ain’t rocket science…everyone can see this yet that arrogant tw@t Pardew won’t change the way he played last year even though it nearly got us relegated.

  • 135 martoon // Aug 24, 2013 at 12:41 PM

Watching the Bolton QPR game, Danny Simpson has got forward to get more crosses in than he did for us the whole of last season. Start to wonder whether he was under instructions to stay back!

  • 136 Transfer Sage // Aug 24, 2013 at 12:44 PM

Thats my biggest complaint with Pardew.

He found a way that worked very well, by luck or by good judgement I dont know. But for whatever reason he decided to move away from this and wont go back to it.

I wouldn’t even mind him trying something different even if it didn’t work….but to keep going the same way where we make it such hard work for ourselves it’s so difficult and i can’t understand why we do it.

I’m not a professional coach and not played a high level but I know the basics, maybe not all the ins and outs, but we can all see there is a problem…pardew is trained and paid to make sure that the problem that us fans see are put right with professional coaching methods.

  • 137 boater // Aug 24, 2013 at 12:45 PM

Last season we looked better when Shola came on in the last 20 mins. He simplifies things and brings the best out of Cisse – who scored a lot of his goals when Shola had come on for the last 20 mins. Basically Cisse needs someone ahead to help him in the box.

It’s pretty obvious, but you’d need to be above the moron/idiot cusp of the IQ spectrum should recognise this -which is why I think Indian, Gorgonzola, etc have problems.

  • 138 Transfer Sage // Aug 24, 2013 at 12:46 PM

when jonas defends so much (arrived as an attacking winger), cabaye plays as a deep DM (attacking mid when arrived) it all says to me it’s tactical…especially when we see a lot of players sat deep all game.

I always said that even if a fullback has a poor cross he should get forward, the very least it does is take a man away from the winger/forward to free up space and stretch the opposition defence.

  • 139 Transfer Sage // Aug 24, 2013 at 12:47 PM

I don’t think it’s just shola…..i think cisse needs anyone near him…currently he is isolated so he can be easily marked out of the game and nobody is close enough to play the nice little 20 yrd through balls he needs.

  • 140 DevonToon // Aug 24, 2013 at 12:51 PM

Sparky @ 134… are you forgetting what our most used formation was when we finished 5th, the very same formation we went on the early unbeaten run..

  • 141 Transfer Sage // Aug 24, 2013 at 12:55 PM

For me the formation is less important than the intent of the team. We could use any formation or combination of players but of we sit deep and leave the forwards isolated we will struggle to create chances for them and we will invite a lot of pressure on ourselves.

I saw some promising signs before the red card at city, passing seemed better but not much else was good, hopefully against weaker opposition we can do better. For me today is the main game to judge our progression over the summer as its home to a side we should beat if we want top 7-10

  • 142 breno95 // Aug 24, 2013 at 12:58 PM

Pardew needs to stop being a friend and act as a bloody manager. From his media work thats how he comes across. Some of the squad need to be taken to task and have rammed home a few stern homr truths i.e. Cabaye, debuchy, santon, tiote to name some.
We need pace n power and i believe we do have this. Pardew needs to esrn his corn so to say, recognise where players are best suited and stop with excuses.
We all want to see an attacking style but coupled with discipline. I would go with:-
    debuchy colo yanga santon

    obertan anita

  • 143 jimmysmith // Aug 24, 2013 at 1:00 PM

People do go on about Shola because of his seemingly poor conversion rate I suppose, but really there is heaps more to his game. I think the thing about him is he just hasnt been quite good enough to really nail down a place and kick on from there. He like Harps, might have benifitted more if he’d moved on in search of first team football, rather than spend so long on the fringes, but actually I don’t think I’ve seen him play better than recent years and at his best he is more than good enough, in fact he’s a real handful for any defense.

Sage – yea formation for me is just something for the pundits to put on the telly, in reality a lot of modern formations are all interchangeable. I was merely pointing out that ” awful 4-4-2 ” was the base formation used when we finished 5th.

    What he will probably play:

  • 147 Transfer Sage // Aug 24, 2013 at 1:17 PM

Totally agree its made more important by pundits than it actually is in the game.

If man utd play stoke and both have 2 strikers then stole are down as traditional 442 and man utd are playing a fluid and dynamic 4411

Totally irrelevant just how they put the graphic on the screen

    I agree mate.

The so-called footy fans who rate strolla need to give themselves a shake. The lad’s a pudding and has been consistently sh1te for the last 10 years FFS. Why we have never been able to replace this championship-standard player is just incredible.

RE: the match today, I think it’s 0-0 draw tbh. We don’t look like scoring with AP’s defensive tactics but I think MYM & Colo are our best pair and can keep a clean sheet.

  • 149 lesh // Aug 24, 2013 at 1:30 PM

Can’t see the problem n not having Cabaye anywhere bear the game today.

If his head’s not right or there’s the slightest possibility that he’s not 100% commited to Newcastle United, then keep him well away. Let him know that professionalism and commitment can cut both ways and the club are paying his wages to give his all to it and the squad’ll be better for it and Pardew seen as a manager who manages as he thinks fit.

Just drop Cabaye and let Sissoko and Anita play in the midfield and I’m sure they’d have a point to prove, particularly Anita.

Bite the bullet Pardew and show Cabaye who’s boss!

  • 150 nufcalex // Aug 24, 2013 at 1:45 PM

Surely if he doesn’t play today his wages must get docked, I think Newcastle fans can cast a blind eye to the shenanigans on Caybe’s part on monday neet but if he continues his escapades we need to throw the book at him.

  • 151 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Aug 24, 2013 at 1:50 PM

It all comes down to man management. Fellaini and Baines would both jump at a chance to go to Man United or a bigger club, and United even bid for Baines, yet both players were still professional enough to get on with the job.

Pardew cannot act surprised that a big club has come in for Cabaye, after all, he’s been touting him in the shop window for the best part of the summer.

Get a grip Pardew, stern words with Wor Yohan, stick him in the starting line up and demand that he shows the fans some respect by giving his all for the shirt. If he seems disinterested and isn’t giving it for NUFC, the fans will soon give him a rude awakening.

Sticking him on the bench is exactly what Cabaye wants, it allows him to spit the dummy until he gets his move.

I play cricket at a reasonable level, still amateur but with a few professionals on the team/league.

If people don’t play for a reason like going to watch a football match or wanting a week off (only really holidays and work are valid excuses) then they are told in no uncertain teams by captain and teams mates that they are letting people down and they know they will not be considered the following weeks if there are plenty other players available.

So in my view not only should pardew give cabaye a tongue lashing so should his team mates as he has left them in the mire as well, they were the ones who had to run around without one of their best teammates on the night.

All speculation mind as Ashley may have withdrawn him to make sure an injury doesn’t rob him of his 20mil he can get for cabaye. The same way he had llambias and pardew blame Carroll for leaving when Carroll told a different story.

Mashers only buys in times of trouble to keep us in the league. Joe is still looking for the old round dialling phone and cannot get the hang of touch button phones.
