Shocks Tonight In The Capital Cup – Magpies Beware

10:37 pm, Tuesday, August 27th, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 36 Comments

Just in case Newcastle are feeling over-confident about our game at Morecambe tomorrow night, there were a few shocks tonight in the Capital Cup second round games.

Capital One Cup logo

We watched the Liverpool game, and the Reds seemed to be very comfortable at half time with a 2-0 lead against League One side Notts County, but the third tier English side came storming back in the second half to score two goals and take the tie into extra time, and Liverpool finally rolled out 4-2 winners.

And Sunderland were losing 2-0 to MK Dons at home with just 12 minutes to go, but somehow managed to score four goals to save the day and run out 4-2 winners after 90 minutes, and into the third round of the competition.

Third tier English club Bristol City got the better of newly promoted Crystal Palace by a score of 2-1 at the Ashton Gate Stadium.

Fulham were also taken to extra time at Burton Albion, when Burton scored a late equalizer, and were then 2-1 up in extra time before Fulham equalized with just three minutes of extra time remaining, and it ended up 2-2 and went to penalties.

Fulham scraped through 5-4 on penalties after Phil Edwards was the unlucky one who missed his penalty for Burton Albion.

And QPR went down 2-0 to League One side Swindon at Loftus Road, with Nile Ranger scoring Swindon’s first goal after 38 minutes.

We don’t think it’s going to be an easy game for Newcastle tomorrow night by any means, and there has to be a result, so the game will go to extra time and penalties if necessary.

And this game should be a priority for Newcastle,  because we have to try to do well in the two Cups this season – maybe even win one for a change, and that would be  a big change.

Nothing new going out to lower league opposition under Pardew . Wouldn’t be surprised if we did to be honest.

  • 2 Transfer Sage // Aug 27, 2013 at 10:43 PM

I know away games in cups against lesser teams are never easy but there is no excuse for us to lose, we should be fielding a near full strength side…no point in playing kids for the sake of it unless they are ready and willing to work hard.

If we play 5/6 kids its too many and we will struggle.

Some decent results for Prem teams in cup ties today. Norwich scored 6 and Southampton 5. Will we get a few tomorrow? Let’s hope so. The team needs confidence in attack as much as anything right now.

we need our main 11 to fire and click together…i think chopping and changing too much will do more harm than good going into the weekend.

I thought Nile Ranger was in prison?

  • 6 Laurent Robert 32 // Aug 27, 2013 at 10:48 PM

Anything could happen tomorrow. You could tell me we’ve won or lost 4 nil and I’d believe you.

  • 7 SuperShearer // Aug 27, 2013 at 10:48 PM

Rumours that Juan Mata’s dad was at the Arsenal game tonight. Could be they’ve moved on from Cabaye?

  • 8 SuperShearer // Aug 27, 2013 at 10:48 PM

Wenger responded with “He may have been…” when asked if Mata’s father was at the Emirates. Very loaded answer.

  • 9 Thump // Aug 27, 2013 at 10:50 PM

@SuperShearer: Between Mata and Cabaye, I know which one I’d rather have. With Mourinho seemingly unimpressed by him, he might definitely find himself on the transfer out.

@gonufc: Nah, his rape case is still on trial. He could end up going to prison fairly soon though!

  • 10 Big Pappa Cissé // Aug 27, 2013 at 10:50 PM

Why on earth is Mourinho not playing Mata like ? , does he not like him or something . The lad is one of the best players in the league .

Doing my dream team no favours either .

    sage –

Exactly mate, we could do with a good wow every now and again. I cant imagine what it must be feel like for the kids just starting out on their toon adventure having to endure this shite.

When i were young there was allsorts of high times, still low times as well but plenty of highs to balance it out. My young daughters aren’t bothered about the books being balanced hahaha

  • 12 jayphoto // Aug 27, 2013 at 10:53 PM

Mata’s dad is agent to 3 fenerbahce players, no way chelsea would sell to Arsenal anyway like!

  • 13 Thump // Aug 27, 2013 at 10:55 PM

@jayphoto: They’ve already refused to sell to Spurs so I doubt Arsenal will have much more of a say. Will be interesting regardless.

  • 14 gonufc (Release the Hatem Bomb) // Aug 27, 2013 at 10:55 PM

@Thump – ahh right, thought he’d been convicted already.

I worry about tomorrow, I don’t think the controlled shooting of Sammy Ameobi is going to get us into the next round. Hopefully he’ll give Marveaux and Vuckic a game.

Terrific article by Gibson in the Chronicle. Ilive in London and have been a supporter for 50 years. I was a season ticket holder until two years ago. Not any longer. This owner has sold the club’s soul. Until recently we were just a laughing stock. I know because I live in London. I hear it all the time. It has got worse. Now Cockney supporters actually feel sorry for us. The shame of it. They genuinely want a strong Toon team because it enhances the Premiership. The owner is selling off the club’s assets and is enjoying it. The soul of this great football club is almost extinct. He has to go. Only a boycott will force him out. Not because it will hurt him financially.H he is too rich for that. The embarrassment of a half empty ground would force him to go. Demos mean nowt. Keep the faith and stay away.
Carling Cup or Capital Cup or Milk Cup or whatever? Exactly, who cares about that at the mo when the soul of the club is on the line. Mashers out!

Never know…doesn’t stop them trying. A big difference between asking how much for a player and 30mil actually being on the table….much harder to dismiss the second option.

    Toon Tang

I was shocked when I bought my younger brother a toon calender this year….on April the picture was the clubs accountant with a big smile on his face holding his balance sheet up.

Much better to see all those 0′s instead of a player if you ask me haha

  • 17 geordie157 // Aug 27, 2013 at 10:58 PM

Mata on a season loan then, ok maybe not.

    We need signings asap.

I have recently spoke to somebody from the mike ashley out campaign MAOC….they said they will be looking to arrange some form of action shortly…will let everyone here know when things are planned.

Or you could all follow them on facebook or twitter…just search the campaign name….should be easy to find.

Anyway that’s me for the night lads and lasses….all have a good sleep and day a work and hopefully see a good match tomorrow night.

    Howay the lads

  • 20 jimiley // Aug 27, 2013 at 11:07 PM

    Transfer sage,
Demos are no use. After a bit of shouting in the streets we all go inside and support the team. And more importantly, we pay our money.
Mashers is running the club on a shoestring. He buys in January if we are struggling for the sole purpose of avoiding 3rd bottom. The next worse scenario is Europe because he might have to buy some quality. Anything between 7th and 4th bottom is fine. I have had enuf of the p..s taker.

We are of the assumption that Innocent Emeghara is the player that #Newcastle are in talks with from Ligue 1. Can’t confirm at the moment.

  • 22 toonluvva // Aug 27, 2013 at 11:10 PM

In theory this match against Morecambe should be a walkover for the Toon.

But with Pardew in charge with his tactics and team selection I think Morecambe will have a decent chance against us.

If I thought a defeat to a much smaller team would bring in new players I would hope for us to get beat. Mr Kinnear will just huff and puff but fail to get anyone over the line so I’m hoping for a Toon win.

  • 23 When do we lose hope? // Aug 27, 2013 at 11:22 PM

The reality is Pardew will never work with a larger club but he may manage a far less difficult club. It is without doubt when you listen to the composure of his interviews that he is very a well thought out intelligent man… working in an almost unachievable role. To me what the players see is a manager that has little respect from above and therefore his position in the eyes of the players is weakened, it is almost inevitable his treatment will effect team performances. The trouble is who can we realistically expect to come in as manager with the histrionics we have suffered under Ashley and now with JFK as FD. I think our best option at this moment in time is to somehow gain some good results, pay of some debt to Ashley to reduce his required sell on price and hopefully sell this club. If Cabaye has to go to help this then so be it.

  • 24 jayphoto // Aug 27, 2013 at 11:24 PM

Never seen Innocent Emeghara live but he looks fast as a whippet in his videos! Notched goals against good sides in inter and lazio too, bit of a puzzle why no decent sides are in for him though…,

@TransferNewsCen: Official: Sevilla have announced that Geoffrey Kondogbia terminated his contract with the club today. Monaco bound.

    How does kinnear fit in?

Theory of Ashley wants pardew out: one of the options that makes the most sense. He has already disrupted enough to cause problems however he has settled down and started speaking sense recently (not in what he is saying but rather the way he says it) however could be a way of trying to get fans back on side for when he takes over.

Theory of he is simply DOF: why bring in someone or rather PAY someone to recruit people if you had no intention to bring anyone in? Is he struggling in the modern game? Has Ashley appointed another ill advised staff member? Or are the funds there just not being spent by him?

Theroy that he is here as a watchful eye over pards:
Nonsense, he doesnt even live in Newcastle.

Theory he is selling and its cheaper to get kinnear to stabilise the ins and outs to make if more appealing: sure it makes sense, but again, why hire someone to stabilise a club when you can do it yourself?

    Finally, scapegoat:

Someone for Ashley to throw under the bus for his poor showing in the transfer window knowing its cheaper to have a mate take flack than himself?

Its got to be one so you lads decide.

  • 33 GeordieTwo // Aug 28, 2013 at 12:05 AM

Overall it’s hard to say whether we’re any stronger than we were 2 years ago now because of Pardew. On paper we look a stronger side but that’s about it. If Cabaye does go it means Ba, Cabaye, Enrique, Barton, Nolan, and Carroll who are first teamers in most squads (not sure about Barton but give him some credit for his last season here) have left us. And they provided plenty of dosh so Mike hasn’t spent anywhere near 60M pounds net, which is all that matters. In fact he will have made money, especially if they get somewhere around 20M for Cabaye. If they get 20M for Cabaye then that’s 55M from just him and Carroll! It’s all bollocks as usual from Joe. Nobody is being fooled anymore (if they ever were).

  • 34 GeordieTwo // Aug 28, 2013 at 12:22 AM

It’s all bollocks from Joe. We have spent very little over Mike’s 6 years in terms of players. We are probably in the bottom 5 on net spending for players in fact. It’s more of the same from the 3 stooges. There is no intention to build a strong squad and try for Europe again. The only intention is to make money for Ashley. Scum always floats to the top so you can see it. It’s showing now and has been for quite a while. The only real way out of this is a new owner with some proper values. Pride in the team, pride in the city, a desire to have the team win something.

  • 35 OhSholaAmeobi // Aug 28, 2013 at 12:40 AM

Mata is the best player in the league…and he’s not even playing.

  • 36 GeordieTwo // Aug 28, 2013 at 12:50 AM

There is still time to do something in this window but if Cabaye goes will he be replaced properly? We really need a very good ACM to supply Remy and Cisse. I like Anita but he may not be enough. Marveaux is very good in patches as well but it’s still not enough. Bring in a very good winger as well. We’re weak attacking on the right. Ben Arfa is not a true right winger, he should be in behind the strikers. We’ve all said these things over and over but Ashley is determined not to improve further after spending in January.
