Newcastle €12M Bid For Thauvin Appears To Make Little Sense

10:59 pm, Friday, August 30th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 53 Comments

With Alan Pardew talking about Newcastle possibly bringing in some flair players today, we suggested this morning that Newcastle may be after 20 year-old Lille midfielder Florian Thauvin.

florian thauvin

Florian Thauvin – why are we now bidding so high for this player?

And there is news tonight  that Newcastle may have made a massive €12M (£10.2M) bid for the youngster, who joined Lille last January for a measly €3.5M, and at that time Newcastle were also said to be interested in the player.

So our question has to be – why didn’t we go after him in January when he going for 35% of the current price?

And what does it mean that we are now bidding for a central midfielder, when we are still short of a top striker?

Thuavin’s value went up during the U20 World Cup in Turkey in the summer, when France were the winners, and Thauvin was one of their best players, and he has refused to train this week at his club,  as he is trying to force a move away from Lille.

But the French press are reporting that Marseilles is the club he really wants to join, and if  we are paying out so much for a midfielder, does this mean that Newcastle will now sell Yohan Cabaye?

We need a striker because we find it hard to score goals since Demba Ba left in January, and that should be our major target – and has been our major target according to Alan Pardew and Joe Kinnear.

So at least on the surface this news seems to make little sense, although we obviously don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes, and maybe we have other  signings also lined up.

If Cabaye is to go, and we still bring in a top striker even on loan then yes – this would make some – so if Cabaye is to move, we wouldn’t expect him to be in the squad for our game tomorrow afternoon against Fullham.

Thauvin is a a very good player and a top future prospect – but we still need a top striker brought in before 11:00 pm on Monday night.

Another reported bid that will come to nothing, our business ended with the loan for Remy

So Mike Ashley can say “hey, we tried” when the window slams shut .

Ryad Boudebouz has been left out of the Sochaux squad this weekend. Whether this is transfer related is unknown.

Sebastien Corchia is in Sochaux’s group vs Ajaccio this weekend. Will he really not be leaving?

  • 5 stan anderson // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:08 PM

I cant believe people on here are still expecting newplayers are coming to us

  • 6 Sazzer // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:09 PM

No link to us recently so in could be he’s off to Swansea or Southampton, Liverpool, Inter that have been link more recently etc.

Definitely falls into the flair player category.

  • 7 Monument Mal // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:10 PM

I think this would be good move because it doesn’t matter what quality your strikers are, the midfield have to create chances for them which ours hasn’t been doing for long enough now. Let’s forget the obsession with strikers, creativity is what we lack most along with a disorganized defence

  • 8 Ben3arfa // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:11 PM

Thauvin for that amount makes sense too bad we wont sign him though

  • 9 ochytoon // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:16 PM

    Boudebouz is going to Southampton.

Would the last sensible person to leave SJP tonight, please turn out the lights. There is not a modicom of intelligence emminating from what used to be a most amazing Football Club.

Mike Ashley has to be a complete and unmitigated disaster befalling our once honourable football club. The FCB even makes Fat Freddy Shepherd look rational and totally in control of reality.

Mike, please, for the sake of the club, just sell up and go back whence you came. You are not wanted, you are not welcome, you have proved beyond all reasonable doubt – you are NOT a “Fit & Proper person” to own a football club.

You undoubtedly have money making talent, you obviously have skills to achieve what you have. BUT, you have NO concept of what NUFC means to the North East, to its fans, even to those from Sunderland & Middlesborough who despise us.

Not once have you, as the OWNER of the club, come out and stated your objectives, your vision for the future. It is your first venture into football and it is obvious you simply do not understand what this club means to tens of thousands of people in or from the North. Your tenure has been nothing short of an unmitigated disaster.

Please, for the sake of the Club in particular and football in the North East – sell up, go back to what you do best and let the club recover from the unmitigated disater your ownership has proved to be.

ochytoon just feeling or do you have any evidence?

  • 12 Tommyy // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:22 PM

Gotta be realistic, I expect one in on loan maximum, and it sickens me.

  • 13 thai-mag // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:22 PM

get used to it lads, there’s nobody coming in, not this summer, when we are in the bottom 3 about xmas we might get a few in to try to avoid the drop but I think it might be to late by then

  • 14 numba9 // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:24 PM

    Well said Graeme

  • 15 kt97toonarmy // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:25 PM

What part of “centre forward” does these lot not understand what is this kid? A winger. We need a centre forward by Monday. It’s soo bad that we had to recall Adam camball from loan. Putting a lot of doubt about a new signing before the window shuts. But I could b wrong we signed santon nd Elliot on the 2nd last day so no panic just yet.

Also I think cabaye needs to play well tomorrow. It’s the least us fans deserve from him. Cause I guarantee one thing: cabaye won’t be as loved at any other club as he is at ours nd I hope he gets that message tomorrow

  • 16 ochytoon // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:26 PM

Live down there. Pochettino’s been saying he wants a winger for a while now, they’ve been heavily linked with him and have the funds to make it possible.
I’d be very surprised if he didn’t go to them.

  • 17 kt97toonarmy // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:28 PM

  • 18 stan anderson // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:38 PM

I t seems to me that we ae being abused by these Cockney B——-S and our loyalty to the club is our weaknesss.

  • 19 kt97toonarmy // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:40 PM

    Stan Anderson

If we don’t have loyalty for our team. What do we have?

  • 20 wynsleap // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:42 PM

Graeme @10. That is the most sensible, passionate post I’ve read on here for a very long time.
It’s nice to know other people are so sickened to the stomach by this unfeeling, uncaring, unambitious owner and the totally inept staff working for him.
In my opinion anyone who can defend Ashley in ANY way, shape or form should be ashamed to call themselves Toon supporters.
As your post is so late and will probably not be seen by so many I’d suggest you repeat it ad nauseum for the next few days for the mini ‘accountants’, misguided mystics who ‘understand’ Ashley’s ‘plans’, eternal optimists who think the Financial Fair Play rules will rescue us, bleeding hearts and those who are so pathetically frightened of our owner that they cower behind the sofa in case he may do something catastrophically worse that we all don’t like.

  • 21 Tinman // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:48 PM

If he is worth 10m now then it makes perfect sense… Stupid title.

  • 22 FatmanJoe // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:48 PM

What’s your suggestion for the Ashley problem then wynsleap?

  • 23 Tommyy // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:49 PM

It’s amazing how the vast majority now realise how far we have fallen under Ashley’s reign. It’s the beginning of the end of an era I feel.

  • 25 Yohan Kebab // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:51 PM

i really want gomis :( just so i can build an absolutely dench fifa team next year with him and bony upfront

  • 26 FatmanJoe // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:52 PM

Tinman, it’s also really bizarre because we are crying out for a very creative player so I too was baffled by the title

  • 27 banjax // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:52 PM

Leaving it late or panicking ?

  • 28 kevymartins // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:55 PM

@Banjax I wouldn’t call it ”leaving it late” I would call it just not giving a sh!t about nufc, we won’t sign any players if cabaye stays, that is a fact. And if we do sell him, we will then have to panic buy and pay over the odds for a poor player just watch.

  • 29 banjax // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:56 PM

Well said Graeme at No 10 !

  • 30 kt97toonarmy // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:56 PM

Wolfs right u might b able to get that into black nd white extra that they sell on a Wednesday u shud give it ago cause we won’t b the only ones who think that’s very passionate and truthful

  • 31 stan anderson // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:56 PM

We have loyalty to our club, thats why the fat man is in control. He knows we will turn up and buy the shirts regardless of what is happening on the pitch

  • 32 Yohan Kebab // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:56 PM

thauvin would be perfect for us at the moment and perfect for him. it takes a certain arrogance to do well at newcastle, to believe in yourself even if the crowd are on your backs, but to absolutely play to them if they are with you

  • 33 kt97toonarmy // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:56 PM

    This is interesting

  • 34 Sazzer // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:56 PM

Wouldn’t Southampton have done that weeks ago?

Latest heavy linked team was Inter and Roma (but they opted for Ljajic as Lamelas replacement). Villa before Southamption. Liverpool, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, PSG and us before that.

Liverpool have missed out on a lot of their attacking targets and recently loaned out Assaidi. More linked with Moses at moment but could be them.

It makes sense if we put in bids for both Thauvin and Boudebouz though on same day after Pardew of said they might be looking in to adding two flair players instead of another striker.

Gomis look to be on his way though with Lyon lining up Saivet and Khazri.

  • 35 jeff // Aug 30, 2013 at 11:58 PM

Ed, no offense but i think u should reread this article as its very misguided and makes me question whether you follow football.

A good striker would not have changed the west ham result at all, however a good creative midfielder wouldve turned that game on its head.

  • 36 kt97toonarmy // Aug 31, 2013 at 12:00 AM

    As I’ve always been told

” there is light at the end of every tunnel”

Just keep believing in this lads nd one day ed can put a post on about the “Fatman” leaving for good

  • 37 Sazzer // Aug 31, 2013 at 12:02 AM

Southampton has also being link with taking Moses loan.

  • 38 kt97toonarmy // Aug 31, 2013 at 12:03 AM

I think if we had cabaye nd a new CF wud have had an impact I think against west ham

  • 39 FatmanJoe // Aug 31, 2013 at 12:05 AM

Very harsh jeff, clearly ed follows football.

But I agree that we are screaming out for creativity in the middle and would have made the difference against the hammers.

  • 40 fippy // Aug 31, 2013 at 12:09 AM

    Here here Graeme, nicely put.

  • 41 kt97toonarmy // Aug 31, 2013 at 12:15 AM

Well lads I hope we win tomorrow like. Nd hopefully we get a few players in by Monday night but I’m goin off now.

    C u all later

  • 42 Sazzer // Aug 31, 2013 at 12:15 AM

Compromise lads – we probably need all of it:

a couple of creative and hardworking midfielders
a couple of goalscoring and complete strikers
    a few solid defenders
another decent back up for Krul
and most likely all of Pardew, Ashley, Kinnear gone
to even come close to winning PL.

  • 43 Harrogate Geordie // Aug 31, 2013 at 1:29 AM

Thauvin, Gomis in and I will be happy. Add Gus Poyet in the mix and I’d be delighted. I still can’t get over the thinking of giving Pards the longest deal in managerial history with no break clause?? Ashley’s an absolute clown..

  • 44 JP...from The Rock // Aug 31, 2013 at 1:33 AM

Ed I am thrilled by this news! We can’t complain about not signing players and not showing ambition and then when we do go for top players we complain also. Now that’s being fickle! I would love to see Thauvin here as he is an excellent player and despite of what you think Ed he is what we need and makes sense-not perfect sense as we could have got him in January much cheaper.

This deal may not even be true but I wish it is as it would show ambition from our club even if Cabaye stays or goes as I rate Thauvin a much better player than Cabaye. Cabaye gets lost in games and can’t get past his man. He can’t take corners but he can take lovely free kicks and gets makes some crunching good tackles at times. But he’s inconsistent and over-rated tbh. Thauvin is a much better player, operates more on the left wing which is perfect as we can replace him with Gutierrez and if Cabaye does leave we will have plenty of cover in Sissoko, Anita, Tiote etc. Thauvin is an excellent dribbler that loves to pass his man and create chances or score himself. He can also play in the middle but he will fit in very nicely here at NUFC and will no-doubt get St James’ roaring again.

Would be a brilliant signing even at that price, which I believe is the price his club actually put on him. I really find this news to believe as it will mean we will be paying the exact selling price- that would be a new one!

    I hope this is true!!

  • 45 Toonman1 // Aug 31, 2013 at 1:41 AM

no amount of creativity in our midfield would have made any difference against West Ham, pardew has about as much tactical knowledge as joe kinnears transfer dealings i’d like this kid he’d be great with a decent manager behind him just no point in buying him to play long ball and totally miss him out of the game anyway if pardew is going to insist on playing the long ball then creative midfielders are pointless.

i just had to register to this site to post this as some deluded fans think were going to buy players, that wont happen what will happen is we sign no one this window then ashley go’s bargain basement hunting in jan again let’s all hope it’s not to late by then because with pardew i can’t see us anywhere near top 15 he needs to go and now i’d rather have the tea lady picking the team and the groundskeeper sorting out tactics than pardew, and we need some decent coaches to go with them.

Could just be ‘tanks on the lawn’ Mashley showing spite to Marseilles for tapping up Gomis when we had a deal struck.

  • 48 Seba29072 // Aug 31, 2013 at 2:38 AM

I’ve come to the conclusion that 95% of fans come on here to moan.

People need to relax a little, the window is still open and although it might feel like it, Mike Ashley is not trying to ruin your lives or destroy the football club he owns.

We have actively tried to get players but I prefer seeing us haggle over targets rather than fork out fee’s and wages for players like Bent.
I agree with Ed that it is odd we are now offering big money for a target we could have picked up 1/4 of the price in January but we had more pressing targets then possibly or we still think the fee represents value. Undoubtably it is also a back up for Cabaye leaving in the future whereas in January we weren’t as under pressure. I still think Thauvin is an AMC though and more like HBA than Cabaye.

I think if we can get this guy, keep Cabaye and push this Gomis deal through it will have been a successful window. We would have kept the same squad that were excellent in 2011/12 and are still progressing, along with the January additions and then brought in Gomis and Remy to replace Ba. Add to that no Europa League so we don’t need as near the depth.

So its annoying to see the fans moaning before its time to moan. Its like they want it to happen in some sick way because they enjoy beating on the team and management.

Its a bit silly at Newcastle as we all know but give us any excuse, which lets face it Mike Ashley has enough, we just go crazy. We should as a collective not be rising to these petty things and giving the media the ammunition to write yet another story.

  • 49 NOVA2967 // Aug 31, 2013 at 2:58 AM

Actually, this bid would make perfect sense. How do we not need a left winger. We always have and everyone hates on Jonas so Yea we need this dude.
Cisse is garbage right now so we do need a striker but I for one love GOuffran think he is well worth a place in the team.
Same with Anita, if he is replaced by Cabeye then I am over Pardew. I mean think of Anita and Cabeye together even throw Sissoko in. I mean those three with Cisse -benny and remy would be class/ sissoko just isnt a CM he cant pass the ball around like the others. He has a few through balls in him but cant run a team like anita

  • 50 Premiership Manager // Aug 31, 2013 at 5:26 AM

I have a feeling this is pure speculation. We have too many French players and it is not healthy for the dressing room and the future of the club.

Add to the equation we can get Moses or Ince for £8M on reasonable wages, who are proven in the English League and it seems to be another attempt to sign another player who will not come to the club.

I don’t understand what Joe Kinnear is doing and if I was Pardew I would walk and to be honest that would do us all a favour and he would be able to leave with his head held high and dignity intact because it would prove that the Managers position at Newcastle had become untenable because of the board room issues which had excluded the manager.

Leaving it this late and not signing players early in the window has cost us previously and now due to the incompetence of the board we will be paying through the nose to watch championship standard football only to leave the ground each time thinking why do we bother.

An utter shambles which Laurel and Hardy could have made a better job of.

  • 51 Douglas // Aug 31, 2013 at 7:00 AM

We should/need to sell Cabaye. The little so and so. If not now, then January. Buying his replacement gives us leverage over Cabaye (he can be dropped) and allows his replacement to settle in.

  • 52 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Aug 31, 2013 at 7:37 AM

The word, “Desperation”! comes to mind.

Totenham have signed Erikkson from Ajax for 12,5 Mil Euro,s.

Tony Alderweird is in Madrid and expected to sign for Athletico, pending his medical !

Cabaye will on his way come Monday to PSG, and Krul is still on the Gooners radar?

If we survive in the Prem this year it will be a bloody Miracle !

  • 53 ToonMatt // Aug 31, 2013 at 8:19 AM

It won’t happen, we are finished in the transfer window now and Remy was our only signing, expect Ashley to try and sell Cabaye or Ben Arfa for a profit though.
