These Are Some Positives Out Of Yesterday’s Win

It was a game we all needed yesterday – not the first half when we looked toothless with no bite up front, but in those last 45 minutes, when we piled on the pressure, until Ben Arfa showed one little bit of magic, and his fantastic goal gave us all 3 points.

Ben Arfa – after scoring yesterday

And Alan Pardew can take a lot out of this game, especially from the second half performance – here are some of the positives from yesterday:

  • It was our first league win of the season and our first league goal of the season
  • It was Newcastle’s  third clean sheet in a row, and we have now conceded four goals in four games, which is a lot better than four goals in one game, which is how we started the season at the Etihad
  • The back four is looking very solid, and Mapou Yabga-Mbiwa had another good game in central defense, and Steven Taylor could find it hard to get back into the starting line-up in front of the Frenchman
  • Both Moussa Sissoko and Vurnon Anita again had good games in the center of the field, and Vurnon  in particular seems to be coming through this seoasn and showing us what a very good technical player he is, and he plays the game simply – opu can start seeing he cam through the Ajax Youth Academy
  • In the last 25 minutes Newcastle showed with the right players on the field,  we can be a very decent attacking force this season
  • Loic Remy looked very good in his first appearance for the side, and he can give us some speed, skill and movement up front – he looks an exciting player
  • Ben Arfa continued his good form, and scored a terrific goal that should win any game – if we can only keep this lad fit

And our best player at Morecambe on Wednesday night – Sammy Ameobi – didn’t even get on yesterday, and Ben Arfa on one wing and Sammy on the other could give us the creativity we need,  to create the chances in the season ahead.

We still need another striker brought in – but if we keep Yohan and bring in another striker (Demba Ba on loan?)  – we should be in decent shape for the season.

But Joe Kinnear has to do his job before 11:00 pm on Monday night rolls around.

Big positive is how good and comfortable mbiwa and colo looked together both want to play it from the back they were solid yesterday.

Negative is the lack of movement in the first half hopefully that will be sorted out quick because a better team would of been ahead at HT

Do we have an option to buy Remy? People seem to think not but lots of paper articles from when we first got him in seem to suggest we have option at 7million?

We won yesterday in spite of Pardew & not because of his brilliant tactically masterful approach to this game.

    As always from me…………………

    Pardew out !!!

Just go back with the money Chelsea paid us 4 ba and buy him no need for another loan we need a big quality striker and ba gas proved he scores at this level. If not ba then someone as good physical and goals are needed pair that with Remy and Benny and we have a team to enjoy watching

Aye wandering….. I couldn’t believe some idiots were booing him. He gave his all when he came on too!

I stick by what I said yesterday. I thought we were fantastic…..both first and second half…. We just had no bite up front til the second half.

    The 433 with

    Hba. Cabs. Sissoko
    Remy cisse gouffran

Was fantastic. Kinda turned into to a 424 at times

Have to say I didn’t expect the win, but nice one lads and a great goal.
Can’t believe how well the defence seems to be, I was very critical of the defence last season, so that’s a real bonus.
    Did cabaye get booed?

It was a win. Massive positive. The overall performance wasn’t great, but there was improvement again. In the league, each game we have improved in our play. That is a huge positive.

Ben Arfa was frustrating for most of the game, trying to do too much too many times. However, the last 15 minutes were superb from him, and if he could play like that consistently throughout a match and the season he could be a great player. The difference in the last 15 minutes was he actually got his head up. He put 2 great crosses in, and put them in early. He rarely does that as he wants to do too much and runs into blind alleys. No surprise to me that when he put the ball in early we had great chances on both occasions – Cisse hitting the bar, and Goofy just failing to connect. Couple that with the goal and his last 15 minutes were superb. How do we get him doing that more often though.

Anita, outstanding. Exactly the sort of performance I’d expect from a player like him. I think the biggest improvement on any of our other central midfielders is his intelligence. Several times yesterday when Colo/Santon or Debuchy pushed on, he sat back and covered their position. With our offensive full backs that quality is vital in at least one starting midfielder.

The defence looked solid, although Fulham didn’t offer much. Bent is awful, a bullet dodged. Berbatov looked like a man annoyed that he had been dropped deeper to accommodate a has been.

Finally, Remy getting on the pitch. Good movement from him, and hopefully just a taster of what he will offer us.

If we keep Cabaye, i’d like to see Sissoko Anita and Cabaye start with Remy and Ben Arfa just off Cisse/a new striker.

Macas, I agree that Ben Arfa could have passed the ball more at times, that’s not what I’m saying.

He puts it on his own shoulders to try and win the game, and yes the movement around him is pathetic. All game it could be seen, as my dad and I were pointing out to each other.

Debuchy and Santon overlap but centrally there’s limited 1-2’s and a lack of bodies willing to get into the box. That is evident in our disgraceful goals for total, never mind team based goals. Players should know exactly which run is going to happen and why.

Pardew relies on that wondergoal again, rather than having a basis of team goals.

Even Sholas goal the other night was a deflection, and Sammy’s was because all their team were at the other end of the pitch in the final minute trying to equalise, so wasn’t actually hard To achieve, although was a good pass and dribble.

The basis of calculated team movement and passing in attacking areas is poor and isn’t improving. Remy helped with his novelty factor of coming on, but that will soon be coached out of him as it has with the January signings.

Great to see Remy @ what he has to offer, a really exciting player.
More importantly the team spirit was there to be seen, every man put a shift in .
What took me a little by surprise at the game .was there was nothing negative from the supporters .
As the clock was ticking away , and it was still nils a piece, the crowd were still giving their full support.
When Ben did put the ball in the Cottagers net ,the roof came off in the Gallowgate end.
Sorry JFA @RML you couldn’t be there ,you missed a right old treat !

Remy instantly showed his class and gave everyone a lift. He even got the assist for the goal. We need to sign him permanently asap!

Booing Cabaye was an absolute disgrace. Thankfully it was a small mindless minority , anyone would move to a better job with more pay if given the opportunity , I dont think you can talk about loyalty when the club you are playing for is showing a total lack of ambition.I wonder what might have been if we had had Remy last season,

Hammers and Fulham were 2 teams that came to SJP for a point. Let’s assess the back four when they’ve had something serious to test them. Villa will provide it and a couple of away games. That all 4 had great games yesterday says more about Fulham and Jol was unusually ungracious after our win. Disappointing.
