This situation we have today is very similar to when the transfer window ended two years ago, when we failed to get in a striker to replace Andy Carroll, and there was all hell to pay, even though we made some good signings that summer, including Yohan Cabaye, Demba Ba, Sylvain Marveaux and Davide Santon, and all for around £10M.
Bafe Gomis – could join Newcastle in January
On the very last day of that transfer window, Newcastle failed in their bid to bring in striker Mevlut Erdinc, who was at PSG at the time, and we then tried to bring in Costa Rican International Bryan Ruiz from FC Twente, but he was too far along the road and signed for Fulham instead for around £4M.
But there were definite signs of some panic going on two years ago on that last day of the window, but there was none of that yesterday – just complete and utter silence.
After fans made it clear two years ago that they were very unhappy that some of the £35M had not been spent to replace Andy Carroll, it seems that Derek LLambias tried to get a striker lined up for the January transfer window, and once one of our targets – Papiss Cisse – became available, Newcastle moved in and paid out £9M for the SC Freiburg striker.
We think what may happen now is that Newcastle will go back in and talk to Lyon, and try to arrange a deal to bring Bafe Gomis to Newcastle in January, and he will be cheaper than he was in the summer, because he will have only six months left on his contract.
Lyon will be keen to sell because they’ll get something for their striker in January, but nothing next summer.
That seems a good possibility – but we needed Bafe in now, and why exactly that deal could not be completed we have no idea, but we’d love to find out the real details.
But that’s unlikely to happen, because it will probably show the complete ineptitude of Joe Kinnear and his team.
