The Newcastle right back Mathieu Debuchy had a terrible game against Manchester City in that very first game of the season, when we were ripped apart 4-0, but it came after the players learned that Yohan Cabaye would not play, and we have to believe it upset the squad of players, and of course Mathieu is Yohan’s best mate. It certainly upset us.
Mathieu Debuchy - hopes to keep his place
Not sure if that was some of the reason for our pathetic display that night, but in any case Mathieu looked completely out of his depth, but he played in the next three games and played a lot better – thankfully – and we had three clean sheets too – two wins and a draw.
Debuchy is currently with the French squad getting ready for their two World Cup qualifying games in Group Ion Saturday and next Tuesday.
The other countries in the group are Spain, Finland, Georgia and Belarus, and they play the last two in the next week, and at the moment they are second top just 3 points behind World Champions Spain, after 5 games played.
And Arsenal’s Bacary Sagna has finally recovered from the injuries he’s picked up over the last couple of years, so it will be interesting to see who manager Didier Deschamps chooses for the right-back spot.
This is what the Newcastle player had to say at a press conference today:
“I knew he would come back,” “He plays for a great club at Arsenal and is very tough mentally, but I just have to think of myself.”
“The France team belongs to everyone, but my aim is to give the coach selection trouble.”
Mathieu is a good attacking right back, but not so good when defending, and he seems to have difficulty with fast and skillful wingers, although he’s played some good games for both France and Newcastle.
Mathieu has 14 caps for France and has so far played 18 times for Newcastle.
