News in the local press today that Newcastle are interested in Alfred Finnbogason who plays for Heerenveen, and he had a great season last term when he scored 28 goals in 34 appearances in the Eredivisie, and subsequently attracted interest from some top clubs.
Alfred Finnbogason – played 16 times for Iceland
And Alfred has got off to a great start this season, scoring 6 goals in his first four appearances for Heerenveen.
The 6′ tall 24 year-old signed on at Heerenveen from Lokeren last August, on a three year deal, and that was after he had a successful loan spell at Swedish club Helsingborgs IF and scored 13 goals in 22 appearances for them.
And in 150 first team appearances he has scored 90 goals, so he knows where the back of the net is, but of course the standard of the leagues he is playing in is nowhere near that of the English Premier League.
Alfred’s one player who did not make a move in the summer, so it’s possible Newcastle may make a bid for him in January, but we are not holding our breath – not at all – after what happened this summer.
Sunderland, Aston Villa and Everton were said to be interested in the forward over the summer, and he was even offered to Newcastle for £5M – but the Tyenside club didn’t take up the offer for the 24 year-old.
But it seems that Newcastle have already started their scouting in earnest for the January transfer market, and Newcastle were officials were in Switzerland last night as Iceland were the visitors in a World Cup qualifier.
But Finnbogason was an unused substitute in a game which ended in a 4-4 draw, with Iceland equalizing in stoppage time.
Why didn’t we just sign our targets in the summer?
