There are reports in France that Newcastle never really entered into fresh negotiations with Lyon for Bafe Gomis before the transfer window closed, and Joe Kinnear had already ended his pursuit of Gomis last Saturday night, and the news is that Newcastle never meet Lyon’s asking price, even though there were wide reports that Newcastle had done that, and there were even quotes from Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas that we had met their price and even agreed wages with Gomis.
Shefki Kuqi – played his heart out for Newcastle but wasn’t good enough
This is so like what happened last summer with Lille over Mathieu Debuchy.
And there is the astonishing news in the local papers today, that Newcastle will be now scour the free agent market, to see if there is anybody there we can pick up for free.
You talk about being misers in the transfer market – this is ridiculous.
But this situation is not unlike what happened after Andy Carroll left the club in January, 2011 and we didn’t replace him, and we finally brought in free agent Shefki Kuqi on a short deal at the club.
There was nothing wrong with Shefki, and he trained and played his heart out for the club, but he just wasn’t good enough.
So it looks we will be doing a similar thing again, but why Mike Ashley cannot spend the club’s money on some decent players – we have no idea – and we are now acting like a third division side who is skint.
And while Joe Kinnear is not a good Director of Football, it’s not Joe who determines the money we can bid for a player and what wages we can offer – ultimately that’s the decision of the owner Mike Ashley.
That’s why we are in this situation at the moment – and why we didn’t get the job done in the summer.
It’s all simply not good enough for a club like Newcastle.
