Yohan Cabaye had his first full game for Newcastle this season today, and he put in a workmanlike performance for the side, and Newcastle looked a good side today at Aston Villa, and for once we even looked a threatening side up front with Ben Arfa and Loic Remy providing a threat on both wings.
Ben Arfa scored Newcastle’s first goal this afternoon
And it seemed like the 4-3-3 formation really suited our players , who are used to playing this type of formation in France and on the continent.
It was good to see Newcastle play so well today and just about deserve the win.
But it was thanks to Gabriel Agbonlahor for missing an absolute sitter in the second half, when it looked easier to score than miss – and the Villa striker didn’t even hit the goal but put the ball wide – even I could have scored with that chance – well maybe not. 😀
Yohan was upbeat after the game, and he now thinks the team is playing like we did two years ago, and seems confident we can do well this season:
“We were playing with same shape that we had in the team two seasons ago and that suits us well.” “They found it hard to play against us. We knew with Hatem on the right, Loic on the left and Papiss as well, we have good energy and dangerous players up front.”
“It was important that we kept the ball well with two touches, three touches, and we did that.” “Aston Villa made it hard for us at the start of the second half, but we stayed solid and in the end we got the win, so it was a good afternoon.” “The best thing is going away from here with the win and three points.”
“We have to keep this mentality around the whole club; if we do that then we have the quality in the team to have a very good season.” “It was a very good win because it is always very difficult to come here and get something.” “There is a nice feeling in the dressing room after that.”
“We now have two wins in a row in the Premier League so we are moving in the right direction and it is good for us.”
Our next game looks like an easy one at St. James’ Park against Hull City next Saturday afternoon, but nothing is easy in the Premier League, and Hull have already put in some solid performances under Geordie manager Steve Bruce.
But if the lads can play as well as they did this afternoon – there’s a decent chance we can get another 3 points and be off to an excellent start to the league.
One of the keys for the season is to keep our top players like Ben Atfa and Loic Remy fit – and we hope that Faye Downey will help us do that – because it will make a huge difference.
Here’s hoping.
And did I mention that Sunderland lost 3-1 at home to Arsenal.

Comment #2Ed is right. Unsung hero Faye Downey. With the first 11 at our disposal it makes a big difference.

Comment #3So nice today to see a team that was selected on form, rather than just picking the usual suspects. Lets have more of that, and lets start dominating more games, instead of letting the opposition dictate the play.

Comment #4Remy and Cabaye are clearly key figures on our team. They missed most/all of the first 3 matches; prospects are very good. Top 8, anybody?

Comment #6Season is 38 games long, let’s hope we can maintain some level of consistency, keep our key players fit and on form, and continue to set up in the right manner.
If we can manage that, then the on-field product won’t be too bad, in fact, it may even pass as pretty good. It’s laid on shaky foundations though, so here’s hoping we get lucky with injuries.

Comment #7I wonder if todays formation and team, was a sign of the penny starting to drop for AP? Perhaps all the negative feedback from the former players last week has opened the management’s eyes a bit? Here’s hoping anyway.

Comment #9Behave. If Fellaini is worth nearly 30m quid then Cabaye is worth at least 20m. Yes he had a poor season last season, but he is a top player.

Comment #10I thought we played some great Football. Villa struggled with the trickery of both HBA and Remy pushing forward. It was a blessing to watch this sort of Football. I really hope we get Remy tied up at the end of the season.

Comment #11Please don’t take the Hull match for granted.
Underestimating your opponents is the first step to losing.
Keep focused and the points should be ours.

Comment #16Fantastic result today and done in the right manner. Benny is proving to be our main attack focal point which is what he threatened to do before the first major injury at Everton then de jong at city. A good run of games will show everyone what we’ve all seen from the start. Thank funk the boy loves this club and I hope we can sign him up to a new contract otherwise I fear we will lose him if not in jan then deffo next summer if he keeps this up. Pards got it spot on today, formation, line up, subs so credit where credit is due. We’ve a nice run of games now so hopefully get a few more points on the board.
Ps such a refreshing sight to come on the blog and see positivity instead of all the doom and gloom recently……speaking of which where is catchy et al?

Comment #18Thanks guys… I pay for an internet tv service that are supposed to show the matches delayed. I was really looking forward to going home and watching the match only for them to screw up and show the wrong match (Spurs to make things worse!)… Im really down now. If any Danes are reading this, stay well clear of Viaplay, they do this all the effing time.

To be fair to catchy and even more moderate people like myself, we were crying out for months for Pardew to pick this team and formation.
Luckily Pardew finally resisted playing his favourites, put people in their right places, got the ball on the deck and amazingly we didn’t close up shop when they equalised. Maybe the penny has finally dropped / is dropping?

Comment #25It is time for JK to earn his corn and get the following out on loan,
Tavernier
Bigi
Vuckic
Campbell
Good
Obertan
None are in the first team pool and all will benefit from games even if it is just a month on loan.

Comment #26HBA ain’t far off world class. To fulfill his potential to reach a world class player, he need’s a move to a world class club. The likes of Barca, R.Madrid, Man Utd. Not that i want him to go because we should be building the club around him.

Tav has been on loan to Shrewsbury, I think, for the last couple of month. Bigi has said that he wants to fight for his place but he does need to go on loan. I’d like to see Good, Vuckic and Obertan on loan to the Championship. And I’d like to see Campbell on loan to the SPL.

Comment #35Glad to see pardew finally revert back to the system fans have been screaming for since the 5th placed finish!
Have to say though given the energy arfa goofy and remy bring to the attack I’d drop cisse like a tonne of bricks, the lad looks lethargic desperate and the only CF who looks like he’s actually lost his strikers instinct, very rarely in the right place at the right time
Never the less great win, good performance for 75% of the game and good to see the lads actually working and making space for each other
Lets hope we can now keep it up, a couple of winnable games coming up where we need to keep that momentum going and pray and pray we don’t get in injuries because let’s be honest there’s no disguising the fact were gambling again this season

Comment #36Yes, Sissoko and Anita are receiving very little credit. They both played very well. And, to bring on Goufrann for Remy and Tiote for Anita proves we do have some strength in depth.

Comment #39rotonda do you not think that pards has now got the confidence of playing that formation?
because in all honesty our left side has been a massive unbalanced problem
marv is shit there
gutti doesn’t offer enough of an attackin threat
who else was there?
now remy’s in he’s got the confidence to play it again just a thought?
