We Can Have A Very Good Season – Cabaye

7:18 pm, Saturday, September 14th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 167 Comments

Yohan Cabaye had his first full game for Newcastle this season today, and he put in a workmanlike performance for the side, and Newcastle looked a good side today at Aston Villa,  and for once we even looked a threatening side up front with Ben Arfa and Loic Remy providing a threat on both wings.

Ben Artfa tunrs away after scoring first goal

Ben Arfa scored Newcastle’s first goal this afternoon

And it seemed like the 4-3-3 formation really suited our  players , who are used to playing this type of formation in France and on the continent.

It was good to see Newcastle play so  well today and just about deserve the win.

But it was thanks to Gabriel Agbonlahor for missing an absolute sitter in the second half, when it looked easier to score than miss – and the Villa striker didn’t even hit the goal  but put the ball wide – even I could have scored with that chance – well maybe not. :D

Yohan was upbeat after the game, and he now thinks the team is playing like we did two years ago, and seems confident we can do well this season:

“We were playing with same shape that we had in the team two seasons ago and that suits us well.” “They found it hard to play against us. We knew with Hatem on the right, Loic on the left and Papiss as well, we have good energy and dangerous players up front.”

“It was important that we kept the ball well with two touches, three touches, and we did that.” “Aston Villa made it hard for us at the start of the second half,  but we stayed solid and in the end we got the win, so it was a good afternoon.” “The best thing is going away from here with the win and three points.”

“We have to keep this mentality around the whole club; if we do that then we have the quality in the team to have a very good season.” “It was a very good win because it is always very difficult to come here and get something.”   “There is a nice feeling in the dressing room after that.”

“We now have two wins in a row in the Premier League so we are moving in the right direction and it is good for us.”

Our next game looks like an easy one at St. James’ Park against Hull City next Saturday afternoon, but nothing is easy in the Premier League,  and Hull have already put in some solid performances under Geordie manager Steve Bruce.

But if the lads can play as well as they did this afternoon – there’s a decent chance we can get another 3 points and be off to an excellent start to the league.

One of the keys for the season is to keep our top players like Ben Atfa and Loic Remy fit – and we hope that Faye Downey will help us do that – because it will make a huge difference.

Here’s hoping.

And did I mention that Sunderland lost 3-1 at home to Arsenal.

Hull is a massive game for us, 4-3-3 and we should win comfortably.

Ed is right. Unsung hero Faye Downey. With the first 11 at our disposal it makes a big difference.

  • 3 G // Sep 14, 2013 at 7:32 PM

So nice today to see a team that was selected on form, rather than just picking the usual suspects. Lets have more of that, and lets start dominating more games, instead of letting the opposition dictate the play.

  • 4 9 // Sep 14, 2013 at 7:33 PM

Remy and Cabaye are clearly key figures on our team. They missed most/all of the first 3 matches; prospects are very good. Top 8, anybody?

  • 6 Ciaran // Sep 14, 2013 at 7:36 PM

Season is 38 games long, let’s hope we can maintain some level of consistency, keep our key players fit and on form, and continue to set up in the right manner.

If we can manage that, then the on-field product won’t be too bad, in fact, it may even pass as pretty good. It’s laid on shaky foundations though, so here’s hoping we get lucky with injuries.

  • 7 G // Sep 14, 2013 at 7:38 PM

I wonder if todays formation and team, was a sign of the penny starting to drop for AP? Perhaps all the negative feedback from the former players last week has opened the management’s eyes a bit? Here’s hoping anyway.

It will be better if you go for 15mill, and we buy nainggolan as replacement.

  • 9 Ciaran // Sep 14, 2013 at 7:40 PM

Behave. If Fellaini is worth nearly 30m quid then Cabaye is worth at least 20m. Yes he had a poor season last season, but he is a top player.

  • 10 Toon1978 // Sep 14, 2013 at 7:41 PM

I thought we played some great Football. Villa struggled with the trickery of both HBA and Remy pushing forward. It was a blessing to watch this sort of Football. I really hope we get Remy tied up at the end of the season.

Please don’t take the Hull match for granted.

Underestimating your opponents is the first step to losing.

Keep focused and the points should be ours.

Fantastic result today and done in the right manner. Benny is proving to be our main attack focal point which is what he threatened to do before the first major injury at Everton then de jong at city. A good run of games will show everyone what we’ve all seen from the start. Thank funk the boy loves this club and I hope we can sign him up to a new contract otherwise I fear we will lose him if not in jan then deffo next summer if he keeps this up. Pards got it spot on today, formation, line up, subs so credit where credit is due. We’ve a nice run of games now so hopefully get a few more points on the board.

Ps such a refreshing sight to come on the blog and see positivity instead of all the doom and gloom recently……speaking of which where is catchy et al?

To be fair to catchy and even more moderate people like myself, we were crying out for months for Pardew to pick this team and formation.

Luckily Pardew finally resisted playing his favourites, put people in their right places, got the ball on the deck and amazingly we didn’t close up shop when they equalised. Maybe the penny has finally dropped / is dropping?

I’m still here. HBA is playing great stuff but he still isn’t world class :)

  • 25 bollance // Sep 14, 2013 at 8:33 PM

It is time for JK to earn his corn and get the following out on loan,

    Tavernier
    Bigi
    Vuckic
    Campbell
    Good
    Obertan

None are in the first team pool and all will benefit from games even if it is just a month on loan.

  • 26 Toon1978 // Sep 14, 2013 at 8:35 PM

HBA ain’t far off world class. To fulfill his potential to reach a world class player, he need’s a move to a world class club. The likes of Barca, R.Madrid, Man Utd. Not that i want him to go because we should be building the club around him.

  • 27 Ciaran // Sep 14, 2013 at 8:35 PM

    Bollance

Tav has been on loan to Shrewsbury, I think, for the last couple of month. Bigi has said that he wants to fight for his place but he does need to go on loan. I’d like to see Good, Vuckic and Obertan on loan to the Championship. And I’d like to see Campbell on loan to the SPL.

  • 28 roy // Sep 14, 2013 at 8:36 PM

Big Moussa was awesome along with hatem Remy showed enough to know he’s class once he gets up to speed. Villa gave Arsenal a good hiding. We looked a top side and I expect us to finish top seven.

  • 29 Ciaran // Sep 14, 2013 at 8:37 PM

Don’t want to bring the party down but I still stand by my pre-season prediction of 11th because of the inevitable injuries and suspensions

Just need to play with the same pressure on the ball, the same attacking intent all year, wotever the personnel and we will enjoy the season, Jonas and Shola come back and we are in the same shit as last year.

  • 34 HullMag6 // Sep 14, 2013 at 8:47 PM

Faye is worth her weight in gold. I doubt we’ll have so many injuries this season and everyone is fitter already.

Top 10 and a decent cup run will do as a minimum.

  • 35 toonarmydownsouth // Sep 14, 2013 at 8:49 PM

Glad to see pardew finally revert back to the system fans have been screaming for since the 5th placed finish!

Have to say though given the energy arfa goofy and remy bring to the attack I’d drop cisse like a tonne of bricks, the lad looks lethargic desperate and the only CF who looks like he’s actually lost his strikers instinct, very rarely in the right place at the right time

Never the less great win, good performance for 75% of the game and good to see the lads actually working and making space for each other
Lets hope we can now keep it up, a couple of winnable games coming up where we need to keep that momentum going and pray and pray we don’t get in injuries because let’s be honest there’s no disguising the fact were gambling again this season

  • 36 Toon1978 // Sep 14, 2013 at 8:51 PM

Yes, Sissoko and Anita are receiving very little credit. They both played very well. And, to bring on Goufrann for Remy and Tiote for Anita proves we do have some strength in depth.

  • 37 toonicle // Sep 14, 2013 at 8:53 PM

TADS- totally agree. Gouffy, Remy and Ben Arfa up front a 433 would be lethal.

  • 38 askar // Sep 14, 2013 at 8:57 PM

    Ruddy
Colo, Krull and Arfa are world class for me. I said everyday on this blog that if HBA is fit we Will be Ok :-) -) just give him the ball more and more.

But Ruddy, Please can you explain what “world class” does mean for you? :-) thank you!

  • 39 manxpie // Sep 14, 2013 at 8:58 PM

rotonda do you not think that pards has now got the confidence of playing that formation?
because in all honesty our left side has been a massive unbalanced problem
    marv is shit there
gutti doesn’t offer enough of an attackin threat
    who else was there?
now remy’s in he’s got the confidence to play it again just a thought?

  • 40 Toon1978 // Sep 14, 2013 at 8:59 PM

    toonicle

Do you think we should drop Cisse?

  • 41 Ciaran // Sep 14, 2013 at 9:01 PM

    Askar

World class is a player who would start for any team in the world. None of our players meet that criteria. Krul has the potential to be world class, maybe Ben Arfa has the abiltiy to get there too.

We can’t be depending solely on one player though. We need balance throughout the side so that if injuries strike, we can cope and have players capable of stepping up and being match winners themselves.

  • 42 Ciaran // Sep 14, 2013 at 9:03 PM

    Manx

I agree that it could well have been a confidence issue that has prevented Pardew from playing 4-3-3. Now he has versatility up front, and especially on the left, he has players who can play 4-3-3 properly.

Problem lies with injuries. If Remy or Gouffran suffer an injury, the 4-3-3 will be out the window. We have a formation dependant on certain players, instead of having a squad of players who fit our best formation.

  • 43 toon kk // Sep 14, 2013 at 9:07 PM

I’ve gone off Cisse at the moment he seems all legs and offers very little, he needs to learn the off side rule.
The rest looked more like an organised team, keep it up lads!
As for Sunderland they made far too many new signings and it could be a disastrous season for them, what a shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 44 manxpie // Sep 14, 2013 at 9:09 PM

ruddy it was just my analysis like :)
i agree and i think an extra attacker in the ilk of ince should have been made in the window and pardew agreed its just the tosspot above didn’t

I didn’t think you were nitpicking at all, analyse away! Haha I’m all for seeing the best from this bunch of players, and if Pardew can achieve that, all well and good. In all fairness, with a proper football owner, who would sign the players we need, Pardew may even play a decent brand of football, despite his defensive tendencies, but, as you say, it’s the powers above that prevent him from doing that.

If we had depth for our forward players, and be able to rotate and keep 4-3-3 no matter what injuries we might suffer, then I would be a lot more hopeful of our chances. As it stands, I worry about how thin our squad is.

    Roy

We’ve enough to finish top 7 if we never suffered a single injury or suspension, but what are the chances of that happening?

  • 52 Ibizatoon // Sep 14, 2013 at 9:16 PM

Let me guess, the blog is filled with balanced, middle ground comments? :)

Really a great win for us today. There will be mistakes, it will take time to adjust, but the big thing today is that confidence within the team seems to be on the rise.

Credit to whoever is responsible. Given all of the recent negativity and turmoil and it’s great to see the team pulling together and pushing on…can’t ask for anything more from them and Pardew. I hope they keep it up.

I don’t think there are many people that don’t think our starting 11 and a few of the bench players are good enough and if they stay fit etc then we can do reasonably well. The issue these fans have is that we normally seem to have some of the worst injury records in the league and if we are missing 2-3 key players, which we were for large parts of last season, then the back up / impact it has on the managers approach / confidence leaves us seriously lacking.

That has still not really been addressed or tested yet this season…let’s hope it doesn’t.

I think what it boils down to with a lot of people, certainly me, is that Ashley doesn’t really seem to have any major ambition to push us on. It’s all so difficult, delayed and full off misdirection.

As for Benny being world class…he has it all there, but he needs to keep it up and give us some consistency. He seems to have the will and desire to do just that and that is simply great news for him and us…what a cracking performance from the lad…the way he was holding on to the ball, teasing the opposition…love it. He was knackered by the end though, we need to make sure he doesn’t get burnt out too quickly. Pardew has to find a way to not be quite so reliant, maybe Marveuax can play a part here? Not to sound negative…more than happy to see Benny doing the business…just thinking ahead :)

On Cisse, he is a confidence striker that relies on good service from the team. He hasn’t had that for around a year, so now the team is starting to click we need to give him some time imo. Is it reasonable to just expect him to click instantly as other players have?

Plus, it’s not like we have too many options. Gouffran played well when he came on, but I really don’t see him as an out and out striker. Remy can play there, but tbh, given the way he runs at defenders he’s perfect for that left wing position in a 4-3-3.

Absolutely buzzing about today. Nice to have something else to talk about for a bit.

  • 53 Munster Mag // Sep 14, 2013 at 9:16 PM

Great stuff, havent even looked at the video yet – am waiting to watch Sky tonight. Good formation, but formations are nothing without a lot of other things – despite the protestations of some so called experts here who design new set ups every week. Well done Pardew – here’s hoping that Remy has foced him to rethink his approach. Remy is a serious, serious athlete. I’ve rarely seen his like. Hugely disappointed that such a big club is run in a penny pinching ambitionless way, but delighted with thsi result. I predicted 2-2 and knew we wouldnt lose today. Feeling good. Surely Pardew wont accomodate Guti automatically now? Well done to all.

Also, back on Benny…I don’t think anyone wanted him sold as they thought he was no good. I think the debate at the time was whether it was worth considering cashing in as we haven’t to date seen him at his best consistently…or actually been able to use him consistently.

I still stand by my answer. No. Benny stays :)

Spurs last season would have finished about 8th or 9th without Bale winning games for them Liverpool with Suarez last year , Van Persie and Benteke are other examples

If we can keep Arfa fit you know we have a chance in any game if we get him the ball especially if we can defend like that every game

Juan Mata was even benched for Chelsea at the start of the season, and Mata is much much better than Arfa. I love Hatem, but he wouldn’t start for every team in the PL, never mind the world. Same goes for Colo and Krul.

JB…Makes you question the whole “the best form of defense is attack” theory.

Only joking lads, don’t hurt me.

Manx…It’s great to be able to take joy in the mackems doing badly and that not be the consolation of the day. It goes much better with a Newcastle win and a good performance too.

What did everyone think about Cabaye today? Not quite up to the pace yet, seems more determined though. Hopefully just needs some game time to settle.

  • 82 toon kk // Sep 14, 2013 at 9:44 PM

Our key this season will be injuries to our best players or should I say our best staying injury free.
Its the difference between top seven or struggling like last season. Mash gambled in the transfer window, let’s hope for the best.

haha jb go and support sunderland then and do us all a favour :)

  • 84 9 // Sep 14, 2013 at 9:45 PM

We have lots of classy players. We finished 5th top 2 years ago. Our squad is now, clearly, stronger than then (Ba the only significant loss – what is his future, now?) so, things could be good “going forward”, plus, unlike many lesser financial rivals, our owner hasn’t spent any of the Premier League Multi £££ due, before it actually arrives; things could get really good after this season + next summer’s spend.

We can expect the usual neggers to keep schtum for a match or two – you will all have noticed none of them have contributed to this post- but when we go through a series of tough games and, it is to be expected, tough results, they’ll be swarming on here dissing the manager and owner, the one-eyed punters that they are. We will all see them spilling their bile then – pity they can’t acknowledge (a little) positivity.

  • 95 Ciaran // Sep 14, 2013 at 9:56 PM

    Manx

I wouldn’t say Bale is World class either, think he’s very talented, and could develop into a world class player, but on current ability, no.

  • 96 Uncertain Toon // Sep 14, 2013 at 9:57 PM

Brilliant result, fully deserved after a great all round performance. Bit early to get carried away however.
As far as the substitutions and Pardew’s tactics go:-
    1) He puts the right team out to start the game
    2) Goofy was always going to come on for Remy who was never going to last 90 mins.
    3) Tiote was getting ready to come on when Goofy scored. Was he thinking about the point? tis open for debate i suppose.
    4) Putting Sammy on for Cabs could have quite easily backfired.
Whether the subs were reactive to what was occurring is open for debate i reckon, but Pardew gets the benefit of the doubt this week for me, where’s that champagne!!!

  • 97 Ibizatoon // Sep 14, 2013 at 9:57 PM

yeah ruddy but i think arfa has more in his locker than bale tbh and to think we got him for 6mill lol

  • 101 Ibizatoon // Sep 14, 2013 at 10:03 PM

JB…You’re right, it goes without saying :)

I’d say you’re probably right. Still quite young mind, not sure if “world class” is a title that should be earned over time?

Can’t hide from the fact he is one of, if not the best of the young talent out there. He is some player, even though he’s annoying tw@ to look at.

  • 102 Ciaran // Sep 14, 2013 at 10:06 PM

HBA has more in his locker technique wise than a lot of players, but he needs to be able to impact a game as much and as often as a lot of other players do.

Look at Ozil’s debut. Set up one goal, instrumental in the second, created 2/3 golden opportunities for his team mates and on another day he would have had 3/4 assists in one game!

HBA had a day like that today, and last time out against Fulham, and if he can manage it for an entire season and get maybe 8/9 goals, and as many assists then we can definitely say he’s at the very least getting there.

The thing with Bale is that while I don’t think he’s world class, his sheer greed means he’s bound to impact upon the game with the amount of bloody shots he takes. Count the amount of assists he gets…not many.

  • 103 mikeashleyisamackem // Sep 14, 2013 at 10:06 PM

havent posted in a while but am doing so as i have a diffrent view to most on here ,alan pardew deserves credit where credit s due he has backed the team this season put his reputation on the line by backing ashley he could of easy of come out and said its difficult times instead he has said we have a good squad so if he mucks it up he does not have that excuse ,its clear the players are playing for him and are behind him ,i read an article about pardew when he was first appointed manager ,that he was reading a book about a very successfull american football coach and he to me has copied the guys style in that at newcastle he has created a us versus them attitude ,everyone is against the regime and has wrote us off even the panel on sky sports news has wrote us off and pardew is using this to jeer up his players ,he has backed them and put his job on the line ,i believe he would of loved to sign a couple a players but he has stuck up for ashley and backed his players ,i have alot more respect for him for that because he couldof easily said its gonna be a long hard season but he has not and the players have been terriffic so far ,ben arfa is easily the next best player to messi if he continues like this and stays fit think we will have a world record transfer next summer that could easily top 100 million he is complete class and my favorite player ever and i am putting money on that he will be real madrids or barcalonas next mega purchase if he stays fit we will lose him to a top team ,man city manu chelsea etc dont have a player like this guy he is the real deal oozes class and imo is best player in the prem when fit ,just hope we get champions league to stand a chance a keeping him ,am really excited about him and am sure he can become best player in the world with confidence he has everthing you would ever want from a player ,amnot happy with the summer transfer business but if ashley wants to do his business in january instead of the summer thats fine by me just wish he had come out and said it you do get better value for money i totally agree ,if ashley spends in january again i will except this policy ,time for newcastle fans to stop been all doom and gloom and get behind the manager

  • 104 JackButler // Sep 14, 2013 at 10:06 PM

    Ciaran

For me a world class player is someone who would get into any side in football and improve them which is what Bale will do at Madrid.

Take the £100 million price tag out of the equation and name is single side in world football that wouldn’t have in their starting 11. He’d walk into every single side in the Premier League, France, Spain, Italy Germany etc etc

  • 105 Ibizatoon // Sep 14, 2013 at 10:13 PM

ashleyisa….I agree that now is the time to get behind the manager and the players. At the end of the day, they are what we have and our frustrations don’t really lie with them (I know some have issues with Pardew and his choices etc, but looking at the bigger picture, if Ashley wanted better he’d have better). Pardew does seem to have dealt with things fairly well and is approaching things positively. The feel within the team, the confidence and intent, is getting back to where it was 2 years ago. Hopefully that continues.

Not sure I see Benny being the best player in the league. Certainly one of the most exciting when on his game. Really hope he gets to show everyone the full extent of what he can do throughout a whole season…definitely something to be happy about.

  • 106 manxpie // Sep 14, 2013 at 10:14 PM

yeah ruddy but he must be close to half % of goals to games ratio in the very very stop start career he’s had with us in the toughest league in the world
i’d say thats a good record and hopefully this season which i’m sure he will, show how good he really is hopefully with a full season which remember he hasn’t had here

  • 107 Ciaran // Sep 14, 2013 at 10:14 PM

    JB

Don’t think he’d walk into Barcelona’s starting XI. Neymar is a vastly superior player to Bale. Reus is better than him at Dortmund. Mata is better than him at Chelsea. Real Madrid sold a better player in Ozil, for half the price they paid for Bale! Madness.

Sorry, can’t agree that he’s world class, or that he’d start for any team in the world, and even if he could, there would be better players in a vast number of them. Bale isn’t even my list of top 10 best players in the world.

  • 108 Ciaran // Sep 14, 2013 at 10:15 PM

Totally agree manx. If HBA can get 30+ games, this season then I expect a good goal/assist return from him. Hopefully he has put his injury past behind him and we can see the real Hatem Ben Arfa.

A good performance, plenty to take into the next game, but we need to play the way we should and just hit hull from kickoff to final whistle, we need to improve goal difference we have to get Cisse a goal or 2 but really happy today lifted my spirits no end, but with my feet on the floor. and i managed to eat and drink for the first time since Monday, all points to a good week ahead.

  • 161 santonthenewmaldini // Sep 15, 2013 at 12:43 AM

For me Cisse should lead the line against Hull and Leeds and if he is still misfiring then Gouffran should take his place for a little while possibly starting from the Liverpool home game

I think Arfa will probably beat Hull all on his own so Cisse will get chances just like he did yesterday he needs to take them although Gouffran could be on a high after scoring so might be worth a start in a 433

Don’t know if it was still because Cabaye is sulking or he is just unfit but he never seemed to create chances the way he should do in the no 10 role never seemed to be in the position to make the killer pass to set up Cisse

I only watched the first half of the game but was impressed with the our performance, especially Ben Arfa and Remy on either wing. Cisse needs a goal or two to gain confidence, but he’ll come good.

The Villa goal was a mistake by Krull but he’s a good keeper and Benteke took the goal well.

Next Saturday’s game at home to Hull is winnable, although there’s no easy games in the PL…..
