We had a terrible time of it with injuries last season, and one of the reasons was that we just didn’t have a big enough squad of players for the extra 14 games in the Europa League, and injuries tend to happen when players play in too many games, without sufficient rest.
Faye Downey – working with the England Rugby team
Newcastle have always had a lot of injuries for one reason or another, and when Graeme Souness and Glenn Roeder were managers at the club from 2004 through 2007, the massive injuries they had eventually cost them their job.
Alan Pardew at the end of the season said the club would look at what went wrong last season and takes measures to pot things right.
One area was injuries and we had Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Coloccini and Tim Krul out for long spells last season, and something had to be done about the injuries.
Newcastle’s appointment of Faye Downey as our new fitness Director now seems like a master-stroke, and we have had very few injuries this season so far (fingers crossed), and the lads are the fittest we’ve seen them in some time.
Downey is a strength and conditioning expert, and she has helped the England rugby team prepare for the last two World Cups, and also worked with the Leicester Tigers and London Irish, and trained British athletes before the Athens Olympics in 2004.
Faye is very experienced, and we have to put the lack of injuries down to the advice Faye has been giving the coaches and the medical staff at Newcastle, and we just hope that Faye is used permanently at the from now on.
It will make a huge difference if we can have players like Ben Arfa and Colo available all season. so when you think what the best signing was for Newcastle in the summer, it’s got to be Faye Downey.
