Newcastle’s Best Signing Of The Summer Was Not Remy

11:05 am, Monday, September 16th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 12 Comments

We had a terrible time of it with injuries last season, and one of the reasons was that we just didn’t have a big enough squad of players for the extra 14 games in the Europa League, and injuries tend to happen when  players play in too many games, without sufficient rest.

faye downey

Faye Downey – working with the England Rugby team

Newcastle have always had a lot of injuries for one reason or another, and when Graeme Souness and Glenn Roeder were managers at the club from 2004 through 2007,  the massive injuries  they had eventually  cost them their job.

Alan Pardew at the end of the season  said the club would look at what went wrong last season  and takes measures to pot things right.

One area was injuries and we had Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Coloccini and Tim Krul  out for long spells last season, and something had to be done about the injuries.

Newcastle’s appointment of Faye Downey as our new fitness Director now seems like a master-stroke, and we have had very few injuries this season so far (fingers crossed),  and the lads are the fittest we’ve seen them in some time.

Downey is a strength and conditioning expert, and she has helped the England rugby team prepare for the last two World Cups, and also worked with the Leicester Tigers and London Irish, and trained British athletes before the Athens Olympics in 2004.

Faye is very experienced, and we have to put the lack of injuries down to the advice Faye has been giving the coaches and the medical staff at Newcastle, and we just hope that Faye is used permanently at the from now on.

It will make a huge difference if  we can have players like Ben Arfa and Colo available all season. so when you think what the best signing was for Newcastle in the summer, it’s got to be Faye Downey.

What do you think?

    Ed,
You and we can do this singling out on a blog. Hope AP doesn’t do it. Others (like Goufy mentioned above) have stepped up as well. I can only think of two of the current first teamers who haven’t really stepped it up.

Bit early for that, especially considering Haidara relapsed after returning to training and Tiote picked up an injury training. Jonas has also been injured. 3 injuries by the time we have played 4 games isn’t a great start. Fortunately they haven’t been to crucial players.

Time will tell, let’s not jinx it, or get ahead of ourselves.

Might be a bit early to say she was successful, last year we began to get injuries at the end of october. And in the first week of the prem this season we lost jonas and tiote through injury, and although that was a great thing to happen, it still shows that injuries could be a problem. God forbid ben arfa or remy to get injured.

Faye Dunaway used to be cute too. But hats off for being multi-talented.

I’d much rather have Remy than Downey! You can’t say she was the BEST signing. If a player is going to get an injury most of the time it is a bad chanllange or a pulled muscle ect. Faye is more to do with keeping the conditioning of our players, and seems to be doing a good job judging by our fitness levels near the end of our games so far. But she won’t be a miricle worker, bet most fans would rather have Remy on board than Downey

our team should be built around sissoko, he is our veira, yayatoure, he needs to be in the middle, he can do everything you want from a centre mid player and he is only going to get better. id make him vice captain and sign him up for another 5 years.

if thats the case, kinnear is probably our best signing, not bringing in any dead wood signings, or players to knack up the team and look how good we can play.

    Three cheers for Kinnear

The signing of the Ashley era if the squad stay fit

Yep, wouldn’t put it all down to her. Far too early to say we’re having an injury free campaign. 15 games in and if we’ve had no unforced injuries then she can take credit.
Still, happy to have her on board.

Great Post ED. WHY COULD YOU NOT JUST SAY NOTHING ABOUT Faye. Now Ashley will try and sell her in January for 10 Million. Thanks Ed.
