Roberto Martinez took over at Wigan in the summer of 2009, after managing Swansea for two and half years, and he became the manager at Wigan, where he had played for 226 games in his playing career, and that after Geordie Steve Bruce had left Wigan to manage Sunderland.
Mike Williamson – Martinez a fantastic manager
Roberto only tuned 40 over the summer, and his last match as a player was in February of 2007 for Chester, so he has only been in management for a short six years.
Martinez had Swansea as League One Champions in 2007-2008 and they then finished 8th in the Championship the following season, but Roberto left the club under protest from Swansea fans to manager Wigan, and he somehow kept the Latics in the Premier League until last May.
Newcastle center-back Mike Williamson seems to know all about Martinez, as he had this to say:
“Martinez is a fantastic manager.” “He gives his teams confidence, and the freedom to play football. I think they’ve got discipline. It’ll make for a tough game.”
“But I think we’ve got the players to go there and get something.” “When you come up against Leeds, it’s always going to be a tough test.” “It was, and we had to be disciplined. I thought we were”
” We kept our shape.” “Everyone was on their game, and some of our attacking play was fantastic.” “I thought we went about our job professionally. We were diligent. We could have had a couple more goals in the end.”
We’ll have to see how well Alan Pardew’s game plan works out tomorrow night, but Leighton Baines will be a threat from free kicks, and Everton also have the dangerous Romelu Lukaku on loan for the season from Chelsea.
It will be a tough game, but Newcastle must take something out of this game.
