Magpies Up Against A Fantastic Manager

9:11 am, Sunday, September 29th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 45 Comments

Roberto Martinez took over at Wigan in the summer of 2009, after managing Swansea  for two and half years, and he became the manager at Wigan, where he had played for 226 games in his playing career, and that  after Geordie Steve Bruce had left Wigan to manage Sunderland.

Mike Williamson – Martinez a fantastic manager

Roberto only tuned 40 over the summer,  and his last match as a player was in February of 2007 for Chester, so he has only been in management for a short six years.

Martinez had Swansea as League One Champions in 2007-2008 and  they then finished 8th in the Championship the following season, but Roberto left the club under protest from Swansea fans to manager Wigan, and he somehow kept the Latics in the Premier League until last May.

Newcastle center-back Mike Williamson seems to know all about Martinez, as he had this to say:

“Martinez is a fantastic manager.”  “He gives his teams confidence, and the freedom to play football. I think they’ve got discipline. It’ll make for a tough game.”

“But I think we’ve got the players to go there and get something.”  “When you come up against Leeds, it’s always going to be a tough test.”  “It was, and we had to be disciplined. I thought we were”

” We kept our shape.”  “Everyone was on their game, and some of our attacking play was fantastic.”  “I thought we went about our job professionally. We were diligent. We could have had a couple more goals in the end.”

We’ll have to see how well Alan Pardew’s game plan works out tomorrow night, but Leighton Baines will be a threat from free kicks, and Everton also have the dangerous Romelu Lukaku on loan for the season from Chelsea.

It will be a tough game, but Newcastle must take something out of this game.

Everton main threats are Baines & Lukaku and they probably play a 4-4-1-1, to me realistically we should beat them but i don’t think we will

prediction another 3-2 defeat with Sissoko & remy on the score sheet

  • 7 Pokat // Sep 29, 2013 at 9:34 AM

If we dont want to see any Baines FKs then maybe we should have a good think about whether we want to see Tiote on the pitch. And Mbiwa. or Cabaye. Oh and Debuchy. Awwwwww!

  • 13 northernirishtoon // Sep 29, 2013 at 9:48 AM

If we turn up and put in a decent performance I think we can win this no problem. It’s the consistency of the performances and not knowing what team is gonna turn up, that’s what scares me!

  • 14 JAMSHA // Sep 29, 2013 at 9:52 AM

wait coleman is another danger man… hope santon can stop him

  • 15 Black and White with an army lol // Sep 29, 2013 at 9:55 AM

    lineup to win

    Santon, Colo, MYM, Dummet
    Cabaye, Anita, Sissoko
    HBA, Gouffran, Remy

imo this team would win against Everton and probably most team

    Pardews lineup

    Debuchy, Colo, MYM, Santon
    Cabaye, Tiote, Sissoko
    HBA, Cisse, Remy

it’s a good lineup but with Debuchy & Tiote i can see deadly free kicks given away by them two, and Cisse would simply not score a goal so we will rely on HBA & Remy and with them two getting no support from Cisse i can only see quick counter attacks by Everton that will lead to goals

    B&W lol

Of all the top 5 Gooners are the least dislikeable despite what they have done to us and Wenger the Whinger droning on at times he has been fantastic for them. Spuds under AVB are also an attractive side and ought to be a role model for how we should have the club run – Levy is a canny operator

willo said—“Martinez is a fantastic manager.” “He gives his teams confidence, and the freedom to play football. I think they’ve got discipline. It’ll make for a tough game.”—
I think i know exactly what you are saying there my old mucker. If only pards had those credentials he may not be too bad . – sadly he hasnt. martinez too clever for AP . 2- 0 everton,

  • 24 yo-yo // Sep 29, 2013 at 10:21 AM

    Hope we keep Krul

    As Jack Bruce put it
    “Time’s right for clear out”

Let’s face it – we know Ashley is a street trader and there will be a window when we do sell two or three ‘purples’ and don’t replace them. That might just be the straw that breaks Pardew’s back

  • 25 Black and White with an army lol // Sep 29, 2013 at 10:25 AM

if only we had a manager of Wenger or AVB caliber we would be heading in the right direction

  • 26 Himanshu Dhingra // Sep 29, 2013 at 10:26 AM

I wish I could have explained what it is but i think we will win tomorrow.

Basically the circumstances are same as our 1-0 win when HBA scored.

Although I do like Martinez, I think it’s an over statement to use the word “great?” He’s done nothing yet and inherited a damn good team so had to hit the ground running. Managers that kept getting the vote of confidence on these pages were Hughton and Martin Jol yet there credibility seems to be in tatters while Geordie boy Steve Bruce is back in the mainstream again. I do believe that it’s got a lot to do with timing and at what point the managers arrive at the club and the infrastructure within. I have said many times that I think Alan Pardew is a better manager than he is given credit on these pages. Don’t forget that 2 years ago there was worrying signs he was possibly in line for the England job hence the rather stupid 8 year contract I suspect?
Tomorrow I think we may surprise a few and I’m going for a score draw.
Sing your hearts out for the lads!!!!!!!!

  • 29 stuart no9 // Sep 29, 2013 at 10:47 AM

Malta mag — really dont believe pards was ever in contention for the england job. the 8 year contract was more down to ashley not having a clue about football and even less of a clue on how to run a football club.

  • 30 Himanshu Dhingra // Sep 29, 2013 at 10:50 AM

They link every tom dick and harry with england job

Daily mail says glen hoddle is in frame for it.

Haven’t we got a fantastic Manager?

At what point in Season do we determine that?

When is the whole of our Stadium gonna cheer for a Full 90 minutes? Or a Full Season??

What a nice day it is today :)

  • 34 JaxtheMag // Sep 29, 2013 at 11:14 AM

our defence will make sure we stay in the bottom half of the table. how can a club not buy any new defenders after the amount of goals we let in last season.

  • 35 Rotonda heights // Sep 29, 2013 at 11:21 AM

    malta mag

just trying to think who won the FA cup against the richest team in world football

  • 36 toonbrother // Sep 29, 2013 at 11:24 AM

I did not say he was a bad player I said he is a rubbish centre back.

He anticipates play and reads the game very well. His ball distribution is also quite good. These are skills that lend themselves to playing Defensive midfield or the “libero” role in a 3-5-2 formation.

As a central defender you cannot be as weak in the air as he is or as prone to drifting into no-mans land the way he does. He is so slow he often dives into tackles he has no need to instead of marshalling away the threat. Consider the number of cheap goals we have conceded from the centre of the 6 yard area. This is indicative of a central defence incapable of commanding the area.

  • 37 toonbrother // Sep 29, 2013 at 11:25 AM

Ive said it for ages. We will remain mediocre as long as Colocinni’s place in central defence is considered sacrosanct. I honestly wish i didnt care as much as I do. Because its so bloody frustrating dumb fans and Pardumb cannot see this. Perch, Williamson, |Saylor,Bassong, MYM the list of failed partners for Colo goes on and noone seems to have the gumption to question this

  • 38 Rotonda heights // Sep 29, 2013 at 11:25 AM

    you’re being ironic right?

  • 39 Rotonda heights // Sep 29, 2013 at 11:27 AM

I think for me we should have let Colo move on as his head clearly wasn’t and may be still isn’t right. If his mind is elsewhere what’s the point in keeping him.

  • 40 toonbrother // Sep 29, 2013 at 11:32 AM

@rotonda i dont think its a mental thing with Colo although i agree we should have cut him loose when he put in his transfer request. I think he is committed to the cause but his skills are mismatched to the role he has been given in a flat 4 defence. Pardumb lacks the sense to see this.

  • 41 yo-yo // Sep 29, 2013 at 11:34 AM

I wouldn’t play Colo as libero – he’s no Pirlo and his distribution is better via Anita who really can see play in front of him and he tends to long pass inaccurately (used to be called hoofing in the old days).
He’s more solid than just okay but we don’t have that good a defence do we ?. He’s a calming influence yes but he doesn’t get the guys going when they need to keep their heads up – he’s not Mr Motivator.

  • 42 Rotonda heights // Sep 29, 2013 at 11:35 AM

How Martinez kept Wigan up year after year on a shoestring while having to play the likes of Caldwell at CB was a minor miracle.

Plus he had to sell all his decent players like Valencia, Palacios, Rodallega, Moses etc while still always trying to play football.

  • 43 Williamsonsuks // Sep 29, 2013 at 11:37 AM

Honestly not getting the Colo insults. He may lack pace and that’s it. He reads the game better than anyone else in our team, he doesn’t panic under pressure, he gives his 100% every game and scores on the odd occasion. Who else deserves the captains band?
He gave a few penalties away in pre season, probably just letting off some steam before the league started. I’m a fan of Colo and after his first season always have been.

  • 44 bishopblaize // Sep 29, 2013 at 11:43 AM

    Sorry Rotonda

Just wanna see the spark again week in week out

We got a fabulous team .. BUT so has everyone else in the Prem

Remember when there used to be just 2 teams in for the Title (even we were up there)

Then it became the same guaranteed 4 (That wasnt us)

Now EVERY TEAM and MANAGER geared up for a piece of the cake.

The NEW Managers know how the top Flight USED to compete tactically.

Now they just put their paractises in to the game and we looking at a new area of football.

How many BIG money signings are doing it with good effect this season UP to NOW?

Strengthing the size of a squad seems to best effect (just hope our team has back up in all areas)

I’m proper buzzing about the Season ahead ( we nearly never made it .. and why .. because other teams downfalls kept us in the Premiership last minute)

Martinez is a very good Manager that’s why!

Some people keep saying he is a poor manager bacause Wigan was relegation fodder two years straight, but they fail to see what he had to work with!

…last season both Wigan and Swansea was the the highlight for me – we were unbelievable poor to watch! And that is me being nice :-)
