Newcastle Linked With England Striker In January

The Mail is reporting that Newcastle will make a move for Jermain Defoe of Tottenham in January, and the England striker turns 31 years old next month.

Jermain Defoe – linked with Newcastle

The England striker does not get many starts at all at Tottenham these days, but if Newcastle do make a move for the former West Ham and Portsmouth player,  it will go against the transfer policy of  the Tyneside club, and Mike Ashley likes to sign players around 26 years old or younger.

Queens Park Rangers and his former boss Harry Redknapp had been linked with the striker over the summer months, but Jermain has ambitions to be in England’s World Cup squad next summer in Brazil, and would not want to take a step down in class in the Championship.

Newcastle need to bring in another striker in January, and we should have done that in the summer, but with our summer target Bafe Gomis likely  to be available for about half the fee Lyon were  asking for him in the summer, the French International striker would seem to be  a better option.

We’d be very surprised if Newcastle do go after Defoe, who will be on big wages at Tottenham,  and certainly his value at 31, will not increase on Tyneside, which is what the Newcastle owner likes to see.

What do you think?

He’s getting on a bit but he’s a poacher of the highest order and you don’t need blistering pace to be a poacher, just need top quality finishing ability and the ability to get into the right areas.
Defoe is class and I’d have him in a heartbeat.

Puhleez Ed., we know you fancy yourself as a scout, naming just about every player we are slightly associated with.
But knowing Ashley’s sell on policy of not buying anyone over twenty six or seven, why bring up an over the hill guy that Spurs want to dump.
Aint gonna happen and you know it.

We are not linked with him.

One of their writers thinks it would benefit Defoe

Peter Beardsley was 32 when we signed him for the second time, and we got another 3 or 4 great years out of him. Age shouldn’t be a barrier when a player looks after himself. We need a blend of youth and experience.

Let me just add, if it was a 32 year old Rooney we were being offered, I’d say categorically no. There’s no way he’ll be up to it at 34 or 35 (I mean football).

It’s all press bollocks. We’re not going to go after a 31 year old on a high wage.

We’re back in a familiar position now, 16th. This is looking to be a very strange season. Both Man sides losing in the same day. Great for football I say. Knock them down and keep them down for as long as possible. Liverpool withstood a lot of early pressure before scoring. The sign of a good team. Looking forward to tomorrow’s game.

Moyes saying they are 5 or 6 world class players away from winning Champs League. That’s him telling his owners he needs players. They have dropped far behind Man City and even Spurs in player recruitment. Wenger seems to have unearthed another gem in Gnabry. They have clearly improved a great deal as well. Ramsey has been tremendous for them.

Sturridge has been excellent for Liverpool as well. A goal (hand ball) and 2 very nice assists. They deserve to be in 3rd place. A big worry for us at home.
