Everton vs Newcastle – Match Preview

everton-fc_crestnufc emblem

Newcastle face a tough task tonight at Goodison Park, where we rarely do well, although last year we got a good 2-2 draw in the corresponding game, and came from behind twice to come away with the point.

Newcastle will be looking for the second away win in the league tonight, and if we can manage that it will equal the two wins we had on the road all of last season.

Newcastle are coming off a horrendous display in the league against Hull City at home, when we twice gave the lead away with soft goals, and it makes this game at Goodison Park even more important.

A win would take us up to 8th place, a draw would take us into 12th place and a defeat will keep us down in 16th place – 5th bottom of the league. 🙁

Shola Ameobi (flu) and Steven Taylor (hamstring) are almost ready but we don’t think they will be risked tonight, and Jonas Gutierrez is back in training after recovering from his  hamstring injury, but will not be ready for this game.

Fab Coloccini has a knock he picked up against Leeds, and there was news that Loic Remy has a muscle problem, so it’s unclear whether both can play or not – but we’ll assume they are fit to play.

Here’s what Alan Pardew had to say today about the team:

“Whichever team we go for, we have the options to change things.” “Like a lot of teams,we have been up and down this season, but the signs are good.”

“We are stronger this year, and that’ a key element. We have top offensive personnel that can change games.” “That’s how it should be with players pushing to star – it’s a nice situation to be in.”

“We didn’t do well defensively against Hull, but it was better against Leeds.” “We’ll want that again at Everton. There’s now pressure when it comes to first-team places if we don’t.”

There were some good performances in the Capital One Cup win last Wednesday,  and a number of players are pushing for a start, but we have a feeling that Alan Pardew will stick with the team that did so poorly against Hull, and the call to them will be  to show it was just an off day against Hull – and that they can get the job done for Newcastle.

So here’s the side Pardew could play tonight

Krul
Debuchy Coloccini (c) Yanga-Mbiwa Santon
Anita Cabaye Sissoko
Ben Arfa Cisse Remy
Subs: Elliot Dummett Williamson Tiote Gouffran Ameobi (Sa) Obertan

There could be some changes in there and some could be the following:

Paul Dummett in for Davide Santon
Mike Williamson in for Yanga-Mbiwa
Sammy Ameobi as one of the front three

Let us know what team you would start tonight.

Te keys to the game are fairly obvious and Newcastle must keep it very tight at the back, especially after the woeful performance against Hull, and we have to hope that the 4-3-3 formation will cause the Everton defense some difficulties.

Th danger men for Everton would seem to be Leighton Baines from free kicks, and Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, who is on loan for the season at Everton.

54% think we will lose this games, and only 18% think we can get the win, sop the expectations are not high.

How Will Newcastle Fare At Everton?

We definitely need to play well and get something out of this game tonight.

Personally would drop Cisse and possibly Cabaye they have been passengers that against Everton we cant really afford the luxury of being 2 men down from kick off

Bring in Gouffran for Cisse and Tiote for Cabaye and keep the team unchanged apart from that

Our defence is actually good when they are focussed on defending Debs and Santon only get caught out when they are forced to attack but we need our wide players and midfielders to help them out watch how Baines and Pienarr perform thats how Arfa needs to play with whoever is fullback behind him

May be we could win this match if captain colo could choke slam both lukaku and baines for once. That said debouze need to be careful tonight if he’s not to be ripped apart by Baines as this could hold the key to an away win for us.Well being optimistic may be we could even scrape a 3 – 2 win tonight.

Apparently Cabaye is fit and ready to play. If that’s the case he simply has to play. Even when he’s shockingly bad, he’s better than Tiote.

Yeah, it’s mediocre. he did nearly win the FA Cup with West Ham too didn’t he?

But I’ve never said anything other than he’s an average PL manager.

Both Pochettino and Laudrup are still unproven in the PL. No reason to assume they would be better than Pardew and every possibility that they could be terrible and we need a new manager after a year…

It’s a bit soon to judge them though. Every club has had a bad game this season and has lost or drawn when they should have got more based on the quality advantage that they held over the opposition.

Beat Everton today and we’re up to 7th or 8th above Everton and people will probably start talking about challenging top 6…

im looking at out team in a different way to pardew,, I think we have a weaker team in the main way,

we don’t have a proven goal getter like Ba in the team,,

our team has always had good goal creators in it, just not used correct, but most will believe pardew ,, cos there just sheep

    We played horrendously against hull?

Not really…. Even though we were beaten I enjoyed the game we attacked well. We just defended terribly in the second half…. Maybe I’m so used to it… That’s why it doesn’t faze me….

On tonight. I would love a win but I can’t see it…. A draw at a push but we’d be lucky for even that. I’m still looking forward to it… Hopefully they can surprise me

too early to judge how a season will go but i mean just on paper i’d rate us 8th best in the league.

going on what i saw last year with a lot of these players and this year we still seem disjointed for whatever reason….players, manager, etc could be any combination of problems.

I think pochettino is unproven but Laudrupp has shown he is a good manager, first in spain where he did a good job and now with swansea..top ten finish and a cup win as well as few impressive displays in europe so far as well. The guy oozes ability and class.

If Remy and Collo are both fit then I am quietly confident of a 1-0 win . If not I think we can nick a point .

As for Baines being the best full back in the league, stick HBA on him and lets see how good he really is defensively 😉

I’d agree with 8th best. Which means that if we get 8th then Pardew surely did averagely? Laudrup does seem to ooze class but early days yet. I’d have been happy for him if Pardew had gone but I think some of the criticism that Pardew gets is just unnecessary.

Cisse is rubbish compared to RvP, Cabaye is rubbish when compared with Ozil etc.

I don’t get the desire to slag our own team and manager off all the time. Last season was very poor but that’s last season. If we’re not looking like we’ll get top 10 at least, then I think he should go, but it’s too early yet.

Personally, I’d sack him if we don’t get top 8 but I’d give him the time unless we’re properly bottom half come Christmas.

if cabaye does start tonight it should be his last chance for sure because of all areas on the pitch currently it is CM that is easiest for us to drop a player from ATM.

squad rotation and dropping players is what I believe to be the weakest part of pardew because most teams he has managed in the past were just small squads.

when anita started to become part of the first team he was looking decent from the second we kicked off and remy himself is another one showing that. tiote on Wednesday was much better with his tackling compared to what he was last year. obatan was poor with his final touches for both them chances but showed decent speed leading up to the chances and Sammy has did some excellent crosses in his recent games, something non of our other wingers had did yet.

the biggest risk pardew facing by not doing rotation more is a thing called player power where the bench players will get annoyed with not having their chance and the starting 11 will become total individual’s who play for nothing but themselves

I’d give pardew all season unless we are in real danger of the drop…purely for the reason it’s easier to attract a good manager in the summer when he has time to get the players in his system and buy/sell what he wants. I think top ten in minimum target for the squad we have but as if our style improves to what we all want then he can have more time I think…unless a very good manager is available.

Laudrupp has been managing 10 years though, so no newbie like soljskaer is to the scene. I think he will be madrids next maanger in all honesty.

More risk of bench players being unhappy with Tiote playing. Claiming Tiote is worthy of a place in the starting line-up off the back of one semi decent performance against Leeds is ridiculous in my opinion.

ToonDarnSarf — Anything that would provide a selective interesting read rather than having to plough through just sheer nastiness and unpleasantness often from what appears to be embittered nutters.

Being often limited for time and having to dive into the murk beneath the articles to find something that entertains, educates or informs on nufc is rarely fruitful and more often plain boring.

It used just to be a minority of posts. However, the embittered vituperation tends to provoke a response and tit for tat posts.
which is plain boring. In short lets separate the wheat from the chaff and improve the quality of contribution.

You seem to have been targeted just because your not in the same camp as some. Just be aware of the ” dirty tricks” some posters( you know who they are) – are capable of. It’s all very childish.

In my case Ed eventually exposed their activities. I hope they’re not playing any leadership roles in the anti Ashley action groups because it will be doomed to failure.- LOL

i’d be tempted to go for a midfield three of tiote, anita and cabaye

adds some steel to the midfield and the fouls will help break up martinez’s style of play which is useful when away from home.

then you have sissoko on the bench to com on the 60/70th minute mark and drive at tired players.

I have very strong feelings about Tiote. He would need to perform week in week out for me to even consider changing my mind about him. He should be proving himself in cameo roles, here and there, not thrown in to the first team sacrificing someone who has actually been playing well. It’s not fair on the likes of Anita or Sissoko.

I’d agree if i think we had been playing well. As we haven’t (sissoko and cabaye both done nothing this year) then i’d be tempted to add him to the side for this game to try and disrupt everton.

I think it’s horses for courses and tiote would suit the game tonight in my opinion.

it’s actually six and two threes both debuchy and santon are just as weak in defence and will have HBA in front of them the major factor I have with santon starting is it will send a warning signal that debuchy has got competition from another RB who will know now his LB position is under threat. if you don’t want to bring a fully CDM for cabaye then the only other choice is bringing back Jonas and obatan as they were both providing much better help to the FB and that is something that is caused when FB are over the top with attacking displays.

if it was dummett you are talking about then you have mixed up left from right as dummett is a LB evertons famous side is LB and LW so that means HBA and debuchy or santon are the players not dummett.

you saying cisse scored midweek well goufran did too i’m sure and if the story of remy missing is correct they might well start with cisse still but the big thing a lot of people are starting to realise now is cisse is a poacher.

they are best in the formation so many hate, the formation they like is 4-4-2 because they will see a cross come into the box their other forward will control it either for an assist or an attempt to score and then comes the cisse moment where he has his shot.

Transfer- Laudrup has achieved a good standing with the PL’s third lowest wage bill. He has also subtly adapted Rodgers’ intricate style to a more direct , solid approach to better use their tricky wingers on the counter attack. I think they will suffer from the Thursday/ Sunday Europa format and despite bringing in players will ultimately suffer.

Sissoko hasn’t been terrible this season, Cabaye hasn’t been great but I’d rather him on the field than Tiote.

As for horses for courses? With Tiote on the field, there is only one brand of football we will be playing and it’s not the kind I want to see. Have a go, West Brom showed that by having no fear, and having a go, you can get a result even at Old Trafford, why should we be afraid of Everton?

If we play Tiote with a 4-2-3-1 formation we will be inviting them to come on to us and accepting that the best we will get is a draw. Not a positive message.

It’s hard to say really, I think its a very even bag whether teams suffer or not. Teams like us suffered whereas stoke, spurs and chelsea all achieved a higher league position (except stoke who went 13th – 14th).

I think they have some very good players and they will manage. Players can easily play thursday/sunday as long as you have a decent squad, which swansea do and adapt your training to suit it.

As for their style…its much better now. Before it was passes going sideways or backwards now they play it forwards more and play a bit similar to arsenal which is very good to watch.

I actually think Dummet is a better defender than both Debuchy and Santon, however Debuchy is more experienced than Santon and better defensively IMO .

I just don’t see the point in changing a team that nearly won us three games in a row that’s all . And away to Everton certainly isn’t the time to do it .

i don’t think sissoko has been bad or good, just a bit anonymous through the first 5 games…like cabaye.

We can still play good attacking football with tiote, we did it a couple years ago with him, cabaye and jonas in the middle…so no reason we can with tiote, cabaye and anita.

Tiote looked to keep things more simple which was key to his game when he was on form. Still has to get back to his best consistently but he doesn’t mean we have to grind out a draw.

We did make it to the quarter finals and then lost to a good Benfica side- courtesy of Saylor. Using 32 players – quantity not quality- last season which was more than any other PL side.

I am told Pardew was thinking of starting Tiote tonight. We need to improve our shot conversion rate and Cisse owes us.

Can’t drop Cisse after he’s just got back on the goal trail.

I’d stick with the front 3 of Remy, Cisse and HBA.
However, as we’re away from home, I’d swap Anita for Tiote.
In defence, I doubt changing anything would help a great deal, the usual back 4 know what they need to do but at a stretch, Dummet for Santon but that’d be it.

Perhaps my only other thought would be dropping Debuchy, moving Santon to RB and playing Dummet.
